Now, Sydenham Laboratories can assure all the clients that food supplements and other related pharmaceutical products produced are of highest quality with the enforcement of food safety measures using HACCP principles by reducing potential hazards all throughout the supply chain. A forerunner to HACCP was developed in the form of production process monitoring during World War II because traditional "end of the pipe" testing was not an efficient way to identify artillery shells that would not explode. HACCP itself was conceived in the 1960s when the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) asked Pillsbury to design and manufacture the first foods for space flights. Since then, HACCP has been recognized internationally as a logical tool for adapting traditional inspection methods to a modern, science-based, food safety system. The HACCP system is a logical, scientific system that can control safety problems in food production. HACCP is now being adopted worldwide. It works by controlling food safety hazards throughout the proc- ess. The hazards can be biological, chemical, or physical. When a company adopts HACCP, it puts controls in place at each point in the production system where safety problems could occur from biological, chemical, or physical hazards. To start a HACCP system, a company must first write a HACCP plan. This article gives an overview on developing a HACCP plan in five preparatory steps and then the seven HACCP principles. The five preliminary steps in making a HACCP plan are: 1. Bring together your HACCP resources/assemble the HACCP team. Appointment of HACCP Team members were done thru the recommendations of the department managers. The members are Joy Norbe (Team Leader), Lydia Penales, Aubrey Panganiban, Arvee Sarmiento, PJ Borlongan, Jamaica Paulino, Ben Armena, Shiela Ladiero, Jed Quebral, Roger Gumapal, Kathy Alegro, Val Alumnos, Wesley Morido and Ulyses Uson. 2. Describe the food and its method of distribution. We have created the product description of all existing food supplements. Since there are other products utilizing the same manufacturing facility and process, we have included Turn to Page 2 SLI Celebrates 10th Customers’ Day By Grace Aguillon Celebrating “Seize the Digital Tsunami” is Sydenham Laboratories’ theme for the 10th Customers’ Day held at The Bellevue Hotel in Alabang, Muntinlupa City last April 26, 2012. After a three year break, newSLInk is back in print! Since the last issue of our newsletter, the company has achieved new milestones and undergone many changes --- this issue will focus on some of those significant events. In “President‘s Notes”, MAC talks about our 40th Anniversary Celebration and what it means to all of us. There is also an article that spotlights how SLI continuously works toward world-class quality. With SLI putting much value on its customers, it is only but fitting to talk about this year’s Customers Day 3. Identify the intended use and consumers of the food. The product descriptions also contain details regarding the product labeling, methods of preservation and other special instructions. 4. Develop a process flow diagram. Each type of dosage form has its process flow diagram and this was used for the identification of potential hazards and provision of respective pre-requisite programs (PRPs) and control points. However, it was very important that the process flow being analyzed start from the purchase of starting materials and end in the finished goods delivery to customers. 5. Verify the diagram in the operation it is meant to represent. Actual observation of the process was done by the HACCP Team to verify if indeed the PRPs and control points are implemented effectively. Applying the seven HACCP principles make up the major steps to writing a HACCP plan. They are: 1. Conduct a hazard analysis. 2. Identify critical control points. 3. Establish critical limits for each critical control point. 4. Establish monitoring procedures. 5. Establish corrective actions. 6. Establish recordkeeping procedures. 7. Establish verification procedures. Employing a HACCP-system demonstrates our commitment to proactively manage food safety. It also allows SLI to utilize its technical and operational resources effectively and efficiently thus resulting to increased confidence in our products quality from both customers and within our organization. We should all remember that the certifications of SLI such as GMP, ISO 9001 and HACCP would matter significantly if everyone is committed to cooperate and actively participate in the implementation of these standards. Congratulations to all of us! which is actually the 10th year we have successfully organized it. There are also articles about SLIKChem going “green” and SPI helping us “destress”. Santos Changing colors doesn’t have to be viewed as entirely dismantling the original vision of the organization but merely invoking a new mission to be able to work well in the preservation of the environment. It would seem ironic coming from a “chemical” manufacturing company, nevertheless it would be commendable for anyone in the industry to rise up and be counted. The past decades bear witnessed to the dramatic global developments in various aspects of our lives, such as World Wars, GeoPolitical/ religious conflicts, population growth, human vanity but more so in Science and technology. Each of those had one way or the other contributed immensely in the degradation of the global environment. It is sad to think that as the world develops, so too are the environ- In retrospect, remember the time you used to travel and shop at the business districts of Manila, Cubao and Makati without instinctively pulling your hanky to cover up your nose and mouth? We were so confident then that no amount of obnoxious gases can cause obstruction from the air we breathe. What about the time you used to go to “Hinulugang Taktak” and Daranak Falls after attending mass at the Antipolo Church during summer? And what’s with Manila bay and Pasig River which used to be referred to by artist, poets and lovers with amorous passion and extreme admiration. Will the next generation after us still enjoy their lost splendor? The answer is yes, if we do our part and act swiftly! The good news is that the “Environmental fever” is creeping up. Like a breath of fresh air, much effort globally is being exerted to achieve an “Ecologically sound” co-existence. That despite the high magnitude developments in our way of life, Nature’s bounty must be equally cared for and preserved! (From left) Ingredia France & Singapore speaker Windy Facturan, CCAP Member of the Board Vic Endaya, SPI President Mike Dela Cruz & Essentiel (Philippine supplier of Lactium) General Manager Helen Baisa pose for a souvenir shot before the Product Presentation Proper. It is within this context that we declare: We at Slikchem CREATE and INNOVATE! Developing quality products while making it environmentally-friendly! There posed the real challenge by not allowing compromise on product quality despite the rising cost. From the formulation components alone, we turn towards the lesser health and environmental risk with preference to being organic and high biodegradability. Packaging must be at least recyclable thereby preventing garbage overload that harms and clogs the environment. Strict observance of proper waste and water disposals are being followed in accordance with the directives of the DENR. Manufacturing processes are being accomplished in consonance with ISO and FDA standards. We at Slikchem CARE! Imagine what we can do if everyone will do their share. If prayers can move mountains……. then joining our hands together can move the world! JU N E 20 12 / V O LU M E 1 / ISSU E N O .1 PAGE 4 “Think—Learning in Action @ SLI” We are faced with the demand of time compression, do more to be competitive and yet be excellent in execution. It is therefore imperative that we as individuals and as a group learning and adaptive to the changing time. We want to excel in life, so, the time to ‘think & learn’ is now. The pressure point of today is to be fast and responsive in action. Deliberation, assessment and learning to continuously improve results are always more an afterthought rather than at the front end of every action. “Time Boundaries” are nonexpandable yet we want to jam or do many things quickly in that limited envelope of time no matter how targeted or focused we are to an objective. Thinking is the calling of our mind forward to a mental process of pondering, deliberating and assessing things by one’s -self (individual thinking) or with others (group thinking). Every awakening mental, emotional and physical action should be preceded with some thinking. It might even be answering quickly the questions what, why, where/when/who and how?? In SLI, it is time we identify our individual and/or group environment that can harbor the thinking process. Individually, this could be the point of awakening as we start our day; ‘the moment’ before any action or reaction on our part; could be the luxury or necessity of our personal ‘solitude’ in our own prayer room or personal diary writing; report writing in work or project status; even while commuting to our point of destination; or even taking a pause while reading and taking opportunity to think. For groups, this could be meeting such as update / status meetings; project-tasked oriented or problem solving meetings; a highly structured planning meeting that requires individual and collective thinking. Many opportunities!! Our challenge in SLI as we move our Organization into the future is to encourage the process of thinking. As an individual, allowing emotional release; moving oneself beyond a given barrier(+ or -); curiosity allowing to explore and know more. In a group to be attentive and a good listener; participative by asking questions; treating each other with 360 degrees of respect, appreciation and constructive criticism; balancing the freedom of time and urgency for action allowing diversity. There have been studies and writings on Human Dynamics: Mental; Emotional & Physical aspects. I contend that thinking influences the mental, the emotional and physical action of organization that can create an opportunity for excellence in action. Thinking is a necessary commodity that has been taken for granted. It is time we harness it back to being in the forefront of all our and any of our action in the company. Time to think is now!! -JAP SLI EMPLOYEES GET FIRST-AID TRAINING By Karla Tan, RN In cooperation with the Philippine National Red Cross—Cavite Chapter , SLI conducted its two day– First Aid Training last March 27-28, 2012 for Industrial Employees , wherein 20 employees from SLI attended. In today’s ever more technologycentric world, the stodgy IT department isn’t considered the home of innovation and business leadership. Yet that might have to change as some of the biggest advances in the history of technology make their way into the front lines of service delivery. Now a day’s almost everyone is dependent on the internet and are tech savvy. Here’s an overview of top trends on IT for the next decade. Management Organizational and Development Training — aims to develop an organization that is more effective in accomplishing the company’s desired goal. It focuses on developing the structures, systems and processes with in the organization to improve organizational effectiveness. Time 2 Think Training for SLI Managers— focuses on the key behaviours to support thinking which are thru listening and asking of questions held at Alabang Country Club and Buena Vista Hill last April 11 and June 22, 2012 respectively. Smart Phones / Devices and Tablets - It’s obvious to the casual observer these days that smart mobile devices based on iOS, Android, and even Blackberry OS/ QNX are seeing widespread use. Social Media - While mobile Cloud Computing - Of all the technology trends on this list, cloud computing is one of the more interesting. All of the items shown above is dependent on one thing the “Internet” as its main lifeblood. Smart Phones with the latest OS available is becoming a hit because of Social Media and other application supported (Ex. Facebook and Instagram); Cloud Computing is really the promising thing here for enterprises like us. Through Cloud computing we can be accessible and viewable anywhere even through the use of Smart Phones. Given those items what we need to do is exploit and adapt and benefit from it, let’s ride the digital tsunami to success!!! PAGE 5 JU N E 20 12 / V O LU M E 1 / ISSU E N O .1 Did you know that.. You can avail a 24 hour medical assistance from our HMO? For Emergency and Elective Cases: HOW SMOKING AFFECTS THE GOODLOOKING YOU Why was there such a term as smoker’s face? It’s the obvious thing that it creates a façade different from that of nonsmoker’s. Have you not experienced carrying bags and bags of eye pockets after not catching a good night sleep? Nicotine has something to do with it. Night withdrawal causes you to go turn side by side your bed and perhaps you even had your brain frizzed looking so stressed the next morning. What is smile with an icky teeth worst without even a tooth? The enamels of our teeth are stained and the gums holding our choppers are easily damaged by the cigarettes we stick inside our mouth. Yes, it’s simply satisfying but count the costs in securing dentures and dentist visits year after year. The wrinkles, on young face’s who smokes, definitely, not agreeable! But it does show up even when you would expect it to appear mid-age or much later than that. Smoking equals a drier to grayish skin. And what comes after that? There, the thinning and slowly sloughing off hair follicles. That doesn’t sound good. How about a flabby tummy from a poor appetite? Not good too. Nicotine as an appetite suppressant may bring sudden loss of kilos but is not a security from not acquiring cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Actually these bad pads are found more on internal organs creating a false and temporary ease. Ending, all natural glow is gone!!! Good health is deprived. But, it’s never too late to quit! The amount of cigarettes one had smoked is a more important risk factor than how long someone smoked. Some quit successfully, others not, because fact is, it is not a featherweight thing to do. Self-discipline, diversion activities and medical attention might help cure your nicotine drive. Reflect on that. distributed to employees during the SLI General Assembly last March 21, 2012 wherein they were asked to pin it together with their company ID as our 1.Notify HMO by calling the following numbers: (02) 533-9740 to 47 (locals 1009, 1025) (Monday to Saturday 7:00 am to 5:00 pm) 09175714002 /09175814003 (02) 622-2728/622-2642 (Monday to Sunday, Holidays, 24 hours) 2.
