ow do you become a filmmaker when you live way out in the country?
Visual storytellers Laurie York and Carmen Goodyear have made many award-winning
documentaries that inspire people all over the world...from their farm on the North Coast.
Their newest movie chronicles the journies of women who came to the coast in the 1960s
and changed the landscape, their own lives and, yes, the world, by learning to live on the land.

aurie York and Carmen Goodyear came
to the Mendocino Coast in different
eras. Carmen came west in the 1960s
and established herself here in the
heyday of the counter-culture revolution.
Laurie made her circuitous
way here later, in 1987,
after leaving her home in
Tennessee, then studying art and painting in San
Francisco for seven years, to live her dream of living
in California’s rolling hills. When they ran into each
other and started painting together, no one could
have predicted the turns their lives would take.
Neither started out particularly as an “agricultural
girl,” but when they got to the North Coast, the pull
of living in the country instigated the discovery of
myriad new talents and skills that included raising
lush gardens, chickens and goats, making cheese
and building sheds. The latest of these talents is
not so agricultural: they have taught themselves to
make films. Their most recent offering is Women
On The Land, a movie that sings with love for this
place and the ethic that brought so many women
here to live simply, work the earth and create a
sustainable lifestyle that few of them came here
knowing how to live. Carmen and Laurie recently
introduced Women On The Land at two screenings
at Matheson Performing Arts Center, in Mendocino, to packed houses. Laurie
and Carmen describe here the process that brought this film to life.
n 2001 they purchased their first computer, an Apple laptop which came with
a program called iMovie. Carmen and
Laurie thought it would be fun to be
able to shoot video and edit it in iMovie,
so they purchased their first video
camera. They had both had experience
in shooting moving pictures, Carmen with a Super
8 film camera and Laurie with a large clunky
video camera. Now they had access to the latest
technology, a small lightweight Sony camcorder
and the editing software to match. They taught
themselves the craft of filmmaking by making
short films around the farm. Their first film was
entitled, Hummingbird Rescue and was about a
tiny hummingbird that had flown into the barn and
couldn’t find its way out. They filmed the process
of reviving the exhausted little bird with drops
of sugar water. It was fascinating watching the
tired little hummer with closed eyes perk up after
sipping (with its very long tongue) a few drops of
sugar water from an eye dropper. This short film
ended as the hummer, perched on Carmen’s finger, spread its little wings and took
flight up into the sky far above the trees.
ow do you become filmmakers living in a rural area,
with no access to schools or even equipment? Laurie
and Carmen met in 1994 in a women’s art support
group called Thursday’s Women. They were both
plein air painters, painting the gorgeous landscape
of the coast in oils on canvas. They began to go out
painting together and their relationship grew from
there. Laurie moved to the farm that Carmen had been running since 1969
and her paintings began to include the animals and plants around her. Carmen
began to have a recurring dream of standing in front of one of her paintings
They found the possibilities were endless with so many
farm stories to be told. Their second short film was entitled,
Punkie’s Puppies and was about their pregnant Jack Russell
Terrier. They followed Punkie through the entire process of
birthing and raising a litter of puppies. They filmed the building
of a whelping box and documented Punkie’s growing stomach.
In the middle of the night they set-up lights near the whelping
box and shot video of Punkie birthing her first litter of beautiful
pups. This film followed the pups through their eight weeks on
the farm to the day when each puppy was adopted by its new

this new skill Laurie and Carmen were able to take their
filmmaking to a new level. And so that is how you become
independent filmmakers in the country.

The Mendocino Coast Women in Business Network is a new
group that will provide a forum for women in business on the
coast to share experience, knowledge, and ideas. The group
will meet monthly and will include a program with a short
presentation from a local business person who will share
information about topics relating to personal, professional,
and business success. There is an annual membership fee
of $50, and the network is open to all who consider themselves a “woman in business” on the coast. Those interested in becoming members are invited to attend their first
meeting for free. The next meeting will take place on July
26 at 7:30 a.m. with the program starting at 8:00 a.m. at
the Caspar Community Center.
The world premiere of MAKEPEACE opened for a three-week run on
Thursday, June 21 at the Matheson Performing Arts Center in
Mendocino.
This play is a political/family drama about an executive who
has spent his professional life working abroad as a consultant
for a major war profiteer, often in third world war zones. His family and marriage explode one night in 2007 when blowback
from his actions in Iraq shatters their version of the American
Dream. All bets are off for Martin Foley and his family when
the devil finally demands his due..

A Day with the Ducks
New show featuring Anne Kessler, known for
her rich, impressionist landscapes of Mendocino County. She uses almost exclusively pastels
since she fell in love with their saturated color.
Anne recently joined the Artist’s Collective Gallery in Elk. She says it was inspired by a day on
the Navarro River where the ducks were swimming and the light kept changing. She spent a
full year painting from her sketches of that exquisite day.
In 1993 when Masako Owada was married
to Prince Naruhito, the Crown Prince of Japan, one of Anne’s paintings was presented to
the royal couple as a wedding present by an
American collector. The painting now hangs
in the private collection of the Japanese Royal
household. Anne will also be a part of the Studio
Discovery Tour, the South Coast’s open studios
which take place August 25, 26 and September
1, 2, and 3, 2012. Anne lives in Point Arena on
the Garcia River.

association with North Coast Brewery presents this comedy about the shenanigans of Wall
Street; how companies, once successful and
now outmoded, are taken over, eviscerated, and
sold, with the hero, of all people, a Wall Street
raider who goes by the fearsome moniker of
“Larry the Liquidator.” Opposing this flamboyant character is a “democratic” New England
factory owner partial to his workers; his “girlfriend” and lifelong secretary; her daughter,
the sharp and sexy lawyer for whom unseating
Larry would be a crowning moment in a career;
and the me-first tactful company president who
knows which way the wind is blowing, and who
acts as a Greek chorus throughout this wonderful play.

“Folk-Rock with Heart” featuring Marcus
McCallen with bassist Johnny Bush. Marcus
McCallen’s voice, along with an irresistible
blend of folk, rock, country and blues, will get
people’s toes tapping. A versatile singer and accomplished guitarist, he has shared the stage
with Van Morrison, Jessie Colin Young, Chris
Isaak, Jerry Jeff Walker, and many others.
He is currently working on his next CD of all
original material. A veteran of the Mendocino
Coast music scene for over thirty years, John
Bush is a multi-instrumentalist, producer and
audio engineer. Focusing primarily on bass
these days John currently works with Marcus,
Morgan Daniel, and Lenny Laks. He can always
be counted on to sit in with local jazz and blues
bands. All ages welcome!

Music for a Teahouse
The Mendocino Music Festival is pleased to announce an evening of Chinese music inspired by
the enjoyment of tea, hence the name “Music
for a Teahouse”. A multi-media production. Be
there to experience the world of ancient Chinese music played by pipa virtuoso Wu Man,
in a teahouse setting with projected landscape
paintings, lanterns, and Taoist lore as well as
contemporary Chinese music by Bright Sheng
with Susan Waterfall and other artists performing. Become absorbed in the experience of traditional Chinese culture, including tea culture,
and a progression of Chinese music from its
ancient classical roots, through the upheavals
of the Cultural Revolution, to the emergence of
new Chinese music. Much of the new Chinese
music was written in exile yet it maintains enduring Chinese musical values. There will be
some fine Chinese teas offered before the concert and during the intermission to bring you
into the whole experience.

Table and Tableware Show
The Artist’s Collective in Elk presents this
second annual event featuring redwood burl
tables by Craig Hathaway and pottery by Alison
Gardner. As an added attraction, Gribouillage:
a French approach to spontaneous painting
and drawing by Sophia Sutherland will be presented. Craig Hathaway is a master craftsman
of rustic-style tables. He has been working in
wood for about thirty years, and has an eye for
how best to bring out the natural beauty in each
piece. His tables are finished with non-toxic
walnut oil. Alison Gardner has been potting for
thirty years, and does high-fired stoneware pottery, using her own glazes made from natural
materials and incorporating local earths and
ash. Sophia Sutherland is a long-time local artist
of many media. In this show, she is displaying a
series of paintings of a technique she calls Gribouillage, which were done with spontaneity, in
gouache and mixed media. She describes them
as “at play in the fields of color.”

Women in Business
The Mendocino Coast Women in Business Net-
work is a new group that will provide a forum
for women in business on the coast to share
experience, knowledge, and ideas. The group
will meet monthly and will include a program
with a short presentation from a local business
person who will share information about topics
relating to personal, professional, and business
success. There is an annual membership fee of
$50, and the network is open to all who consider
themselves a “woman in business” on the coast.
Those interested in becoming members are invited to attend their first meeting for free.

playing jazz and celtic music with guitar and
violin. This is a benefit for Pacific Textile Arts.
Pacific Textile Arts is an organization devoted
to the support of all the textile arts. PTA has just
moved into two surplus portable buildings and
have refurbished them to support large looms
and bookshelves filled with an extensive textile
arts library. The public is invited to visit their

Alger Street in Fort Bragg. A mainstay in the
Bay Area music scene since the early eighties,
guitarist Mike Wollenberg has performed and
recorded with many Bay area luminaries, from
Mike Marshall and Darol Anger to Laurie Lewis
and Tom Rozum. Leah Wollenberg has been
around music and musicians all her life. As a
performer, Leah presents her music with total
absorption and conviction, making her a joy to
listen to and watch. All ages welcome!
