Mendocino Art Center Mission Statement: The mission of the Mendocino Art Center is to be a vital cultural resource, providing a broad range of the highest quality educational and exhibition opportunities in the arts to all people. From the Editor Summer 2009 Remembering Gayle In my last editorial I referenced several “milestones and passages” and I need to do that one more time, to remember my friend and colleague, singer, songwriter and musician Gayle Caldwell, who passed away in April. We have featured Gayle in our magazine before. A profile of her exciting and successful life as a musician ran in our March, 2008 issue, and a review of her new CD, All Is One, ran last October. In the March issue, Katy Tahja wrote, “Gayle had a colorful history before choosing peace and quiet over fame and fortune. In her case, it was being a part of the original New Christy Minstrels in the 1960’s, resulting in music that people of a certain age remember to this day.” She was also one half of the pop music duo “Jackie and Gayle,” and if you are “of a certain age,” and in a mood to be swamped with nostalgia for that magical part of the 60’s just before all hell broke loose, google “Jackie and Gayle” and “The New Christy Minstrels.” Watch for the listings for YouTube videos, and check out Gayle (the dark haired one) and Jackie singing “Poison Ivy,” “Girl from Ipanema,” and “When You Walk in The Room,” and Gayle and the other Minstrels performing “Green, Green,” “Follow the Drinking Gourd,” and others. Brought a lump to my throat – not just for the loss of Gayle, but for a lost and distant era that was very much a part of my own coming of age. Don’t miss the beehive hairdos in the audience! The Mendocino Art Center had a “little job” to offer in 2000, coordinating a series of Sunday afternoon concerts made possible by a bequest from Alysoun Huntley Ford. Gayle took on this “little job” and did it with her usual professionalism right up until her death. Every concert was meticulously planned; the best musicians hired, technical arrangements made, publicity put in place, appropriate compensation secured for the musicians, the piano tuned – Gayle took care of it all. It’s a hackneyed phrase but in this job she was the “consummate professional.” Many times I drove in to the Art Center on a Sunday (slightly resentful, let’s be honest, it being my day off) to help Gayle host a concert, only to leave feeling I wouldn’t have missed it for the world. We had so many wonderful concerts. My favorites included the tuba and piano recital (Zachariah Spellman and Karin Hutchinson), any concert featuring Marcia Sloane on cello (especially when she performed a piece she had written just to go with our Marc Chagall exhibit); Spencer Brewer with Elena Casanova on piano. I could go on. But my MOST FAVORITE, and Gayle’s too, were the “Songwriters Showcase” events she put together, featuring local singer/songwriters performing their own compositions in MAC’s Main Gallery. Some of the featured musicians were Max Forseter, Margery Crowningshield, Danny Barca, Jason Serfling, Lynn Kiesewetter, Clarelynn Rose, Meridian Green, Holly Tannen, Kitty Rose, Don Bell and, of course, Gayle herself, one of the very best. We miss Gayle Caldwell! Peggy Templer COVER IMAGE: Warrior – Collage by Sue Siskin 5
