Oiling the Immigrants Bowl
My Daughter Is Sleeping
I stuck my hands in my mother’s apron
pulled up pictures of her holding
long dead babies in her arms
My daughter is sleeping beneath a blanket
woven with green,
the color of female sage in winter,
cut loose from the land in the time of snow,
forgetful of its purpose.
In the sky a winter moon is leaking her eggs
into the universe, into the mind of the Southwest,
that lonely nature, her body radiant with sun.
My daughter is sleeping in the casita
beneath blankets the color of sage in winter.
She is dreaming a long road, a curving roundness
that stretches out into an alphabet
part earth, part water.
There is a woman on that road with her face.
There are many grandmothers.
She is dreaming the shape of birds into her body.
This is her life, entering her, filled with the color green,
and birds fashioned after wind.
I stuck my hands in her apron
felt the sting of asafetida on my tongue,
a cure for cursing, a cure for flu,
a cure for stormy relations
I stuck my hands in my mother’s apron,
smelled her cedar chest opening,
found moth balls like globes of sugar
sprinkled across my uncle’s
navy uniform. I pulled up pictures
of the dead, resurrected color into faces,
jumped off jumping off places,
stuck my hands in past the wrists,
up to the elbows, shoulders,
this is her collar bone
ringing my neck
I pulled her apron over my head,
tied it in a bow across my belly,
her pockets next to my pelvis
I stuck my hands in, pulled out
river smells in her hair, cypress sap
on her fingers. I dusted my hands with flour,
measured in salt, rolled out the dough,
flattened out days, lifted up her first dates
in Baton Rouge, farm boys on the porch,
live crawfish in a bowl on her table
I stuck my hands in her apron,
pulled out the Queen of Wands,
determined, strong,
oiled the immigrants bowl,
covered the bread.

Hummingbird Medicine
Hummingbird medicine is fragile
older than all our lifetimes
braided together,
sending out messages
from the animal mind
of the universe.
Somewhere there is a place
where all that medicine
is gathering,
waiting to be found.
Some mornings
I can almost remember
that other life,
can feel it moving inside
my arms and legs,
so sweet
like a hummingbird song,
fragile medicine
pulling me back
to the beginning place.
Devreaux Baker is the recipient
of a 2011 PEN Oakland Poetry
Award for her book Red Willow
People, and the 2012 recipient of
the Hawaii Council on Humanities
International Poetry Award. She
was recently awarded the poetry
prize from the Women’s Global
Leadership Initiative. She has
taught poetry in the schools, and
produced original student writing
for KZYX. She has published three
books of poetry.
