Hi Members,
It’s been a year since I took office. We have seen
success and we have seen trials. Albert Pike wrote,
“ That which causes us trials shall yield us triumph: and
that which make our hearts ache shall fill us with gladness. The only true happiness is to learn, to advance, and
to improve: which could not happen unless we had commenced with error, ignorance, and imperfection. We
must pass through the darkness to reach the light.” So
hopefully the trials we have worked through as an association will bring us success on the other side. And we will
be stronger for them.
I want to thank our past officers, board members,
and committee heads for their work and dedication to
the IFA. I would also like to welcome Bill Bailey as our
new V.P., Cody Bogard as our Secretary, and David
Bruce as one of our new Board of Directors. I look forward to working with all of you, along with the current
officers and BOD’s in the coming year.
It was good to see those of you who made it to the
annual meeting. Ann did a wonderful job putting the
dinner together, as usual. Thank you Ann.
Remember that the IFA will not be at the Hoosier Horse
Fair this year. We will be holding our contest at the Tipton Co. Fair Grounds. I hope you will be able to come
out and support the IFA.
Be careful in the snow, spring is on its way.

Editor's Note
A
s our past IFA Vice- President leaves office I'd like
to say a few words on her behalf. Sharon Wirey
started to submit a contribution sharing her memories of this association. Perhaps I can help her finish it. Sharon acknowledges her many IFA mentors who
helped further her career and the friendships she forged over
her 20 years of very active involvement. Her participation in
the IFA includes (but is not limited to): serving on the BOD,
Vice-President, Secretary, and chairperson of the picnic, hammer-ins, banquet, newsletter, directory, membership and sponsorship committees. This list does not include the ‗behind the
scenes‘ efforts she's put in over the years.
Sharon has coordinated food for numerous HHF contests
(which entailed mass quantity, multiple cart grocery trips) then
transported and orchestrated its preparation – a creative feat in
itself considering logistics and circumstance- and figured out a
way of getting it to an area all but impossible to negotiate.
She's also been in charge of moving auction items through the
same maze of humanity, dodging six-horse draft hitches and
calming HHF security officials denying her access.

Sharon is the one who stays after a function is over, cleaning
up and helping with tear-down. Often her husband Joe is beside her, demonstrating true teamwork in action. Practical, efficient and well organized, Sharon is a 'get er done' kind of person. We've worked together as farriers. She wears me outputs me to shame with her speed, motivation and drive. In a
social setting Sharon is the only person I know who can be sitting in a lawn chair (I think about 8 minutes is what she allows
herself) and exhaust you just by watching her plan, then accomplish, her next task.

Caring, kind, giving – these true words fall short describing my
buddy. I've witnessed pro-bono work Sharon has done for other farriers suffering on hard times. She's hired and helped several young farriers who go on to establish successful careers.
I've known countless instances where Sharon and Joe have
been there for a friend in need, helping out in every way possible. They do so quietly with no expectation of recognition.
An incredible volunteer, Sharon credits the IFA with teaching
her organizational skills and efficiency. I don't think a lot of
that is taught; it comes from within her. We could learn much
through her example of giving back.
I hope you can take a break and learn how to relax, lady-o. Enjoy your husband, your horses, your camping trips, your life.

Minutes of the Indiana Farriers’
Association January 15th 2011 General Membership
Meeting (Draft)
Called to order by Tim Tritch @ 7:20 pm
Officer‘s Reports
President: Tim thanked Sharon for being the vice-president,
and for everyone giving him the opportunity to serve as president.
He said that while we have had some issues to work through this
year we are looking forward to having a good coming year as an association.
Vice-President: Sharon stated that she is grateful Tim did
not quit so she did not have to take over.
Secretary: Nothing new to report
Treasurer: Mike reported that at the end of 2010 the IFA
had $8187.21, the Tim Byrne Fund $3300 the injured farriers
fund had $8272.02, there were $500 in payouts for 2010, the
Wayland Arney fund had 1220. The contest made a total of
$2158.78, the newsletter paid out $1433.21, certification
made $740, the directory made $214.99, there was $1200 in
sponsorships. As of 1-15-11 the IFA has $8714.43, the IFF
has $8472.02
Standing Committees
Archives: Clyde Stringer still wants any pictures of current
gatherings of the association.
Achievement: The Clyde Stringer award went to Troy Price
and the Al Morgan award went to Jim Keith.
Banquet: The sign-ups for the banquet went well this year.
Certification: Tim reported that the certification was turned
over to Ryan Clarke. The certification went well; the examiner and testers donated their time.
Contest: The contest will not be held at the Hoosier Horse
Fair, it will most likely be held at the Tipton co. fairgrounds.
It is scheduled for the 1st weekend in April, Shayne Carter
will be the judge. The shoe list will be placed in the newsletter and on the website. Hank Highfield will be in charge of
the contest next year.
Fall Clinic: Ideas for the fall clinic include Chris Gregory,
Esco Buff, a list of potential clinicians from Mustad and
John Kane the accountant who spoke last year.

If you haven‘t renewed your membership
for 2011 this will be the last IFA mailing you will receive. To
ensure your information will appear in the 2011 IFA directory,
membership dues need to be received no later than March 1st.
There is a renewal form enclosed in this newsletter for your convenience.
Those IFA members wishing to camp picnic weekend (the fall
picnic is Saturday, Sept. 17th) please remember reservations at
Horseman's Campground, Brown County State Park, can be
made six months prior to date of arrival. Reservations cannot be
made before this date but may be made afterward. September
sites at Brown County can be hard to obtain; your best chance at
getting a good one involves contacting the reservation center
March 16th for those arriving Friday, September 16th.

Hammer-Ins: We are in need of someone to organize hammer
-ins
Newsletter: Julie thanked everyone for their timeliness turning
in information for the newsletter. Anyone with shoeing tips or
tricks they have are encouraged to submit them to Julie for
publication in the newsletter.
Picnic: The date for the picnic will be September 17 at Brown
County state park reservations should be made on March 17
Website: The website is working well. Amy has put a page on
Facebook as well. Pictures for the Facebook page can be
emailed to Amy.
PSCAAEP: Jim Keith is looking in to having a trim day with
the vet students at Purdue.
IHC/HHF: Need a new liaison. Dale Jackson was appointed
Membership: Havilah congratulated the 5, 10, and 20 year
members.
Sponsorship: 149 sponsorship packets were sent out for 2010
at the cost of $99.73. $1200 was received in sponsorships.
$870 was received from the directory. For 2011 85 packets
will be sent out the packet will include a sponsorship form the
2010 directory and the Nov – Dec 2010 newsletter. It will cost
$160.65 to print the newsletter, $35 to print the sponsor forms,
$27.81 for envelopes and $97.75 to mail the packet. The total
cost will be $325. They should be mailed by 2-1-11. Brad
Langhofer will be the email contact on the sponsor form.
There were 149 directories left over from 2009 and 125 left
from 2010. Cave & Co. will give us a 25% credit on printing
due to last year‘s mistakein the directory. Sharon made a motion that the new packets be approved Julie seconded motion
carried.
Election: Bill Bailey was elected vice-president, Cody Bogard
was elected Secretary David Bruce was elected to the board, Lance
Kendrick was written in. David Bruce motioned to destroy the ballots
Sharon Wirey seconded. Motion carried.
Old Business: no old business
New Business: 1220 has been given to the family of Wayland
Arney the money will be used to send his daughter to shoeing school.
The Minnesota farriers association wants to swap events with us.

changes that needed to be made. Please go to

haven‘t had a chance to do so.
Due to the website having to be completely redone some information such as Bio‘s were not transferred to the new website. If
anyone has a bio that they want added under their name in the directory please email me your bio information and I will add it.
I have added the Indiana Farriers‘ Association to the world of Facebook. For those of you who are familiar with Facebook please
find our page by searching for Indiana Farriers and click ―Like‖ to
add us to your page. For those of you not familiar or not on Facebook at this time you will first need to create your own Facebook
page at www.facebook.com and then you can search for us and
―Like‖ us. I will add pictures of IFA members at events as I gather them and I will also add upcoming IFA events to the page to
try and attract others who are not even members of the IFA to our
events. If you have pictures of members at IFA events that you
would like added please email them to me and I will do my best
to add them to the site as I have time.

Sharon started out 2010 just as a mentor and a boss that I was eager
to please. She has gone from a boss and/or mentor to a person that I
consider an amazing friend, in the duration of the last year.
I would also like to thank several other people that have helped me
and let me have the wonderful privilege of working for them in the
last year. I feel that the diversification of being under so many
skilled and knowledgeable farriers that are in different fields and
specialize in different areas is what will develop me as a farrier as
well as a citizen. Along with Sharon Wirey, I have been able to
work with Jim Keith, Julie Young, Larry Jones, Heather Holly, and
Larry Sims. I would like to thank all of them, as they have all helped
me in so many unimaginable ways.
There were other farriers that showed some interest in getting younger farriers involved but simply didn‘t follow through
when the time became present. I would like to encourage all farriers
to help new farriers get rolling as this has helped me an incredible
amount. Hopefully one day I will be able to give back to the younger/newer generation as I was helped.

The Beginning of The Road….
A
fter completing my first year in the farrier
business, I couldn‘t be more excited about
life and the career that I have chosen. It is
wonderful to be able to wake up in the morning and be able to look forward to the day ahead. Yet being realistic, there are days that are overwhelming and days that I have
certain clients that I look forward to visiting more than others. As
a whole, I don‘t feel that I could have chosen any other career that
would have given me the satisfaction that shoeing horses has. I
have had the wonderful opportunity of being able to be around
many reputable farriers in the last year, trying to keep my eyes
and ears open to take in any knowledge available. Joining the
IFA a year ago has given me the great opportunity to network and
meet so many people. However, I do have to admit that walking
into a room full of knowledgeable and reputable farriers for the
first time was a bit intimidating. It‘s amazing to me that I have
created so many great friends and acquaintances out of that same
room of knowledgeable and reputable farriers that I was so intimidated by at first.
Two months before I attended farrier school I did some
research and found one of the best, highest skilled, and most reputable farriers in my area. After meeting with her for a short time
we had agreed upon some details and I would apprentice under
her after I finished shoeing school. Looking back, this is probably one of the best career decisions that I have made to date. I
have apprenticed with Sharon Wirey for the first year of my career and cannot express how much I have learned about shoeing
horse and life itself. Once again, I would just like to thank Sharon
Wirey for helping me this past year (and hopefully more to
come).
