The third annual Rick’s Place art auction, held

recently, raised more than $23,000 for Kansas Cityarea marketing communications/graphic arts
professionals in need. More than
240 people attended the Bounce Back
Ball at the Kansas City Downtown
Airport on Oct. 20. Comedian
David Naster, who served as emcee,
Max Groove, and The Weasels provided entertainment.
The creative-black-tie evening
featured a silent auction of more
than 150 art and non-art items.
Fabulous paintings, photography,
sculpture, and jewelry by local
artists were available, along with
books, golf paraphernalia, and a
toaster designed by Porsche. The
rousing live
auction included such items as
a signed, limited edition Marcus
Allen print by John Martin; a straight
Egyptian-Arabian stud
service; and a white gold diamond pendant from Helzberg Diamonds.

Event co-chairperson John Boyd Martin thanks everyone for their generous support. “Rick’s Place
exists to help people bounce back and give
them hope. Thanks go to the scores of
artists, bidders, and volunteers who
enable that support to continue
through the coming year,” Martin
said.
New to this year’s Bounce
Back Ball was the Best Ball
Contest. Eighteen entrants
designed, decorated and
displayed a ball of their
choice to compete as the
best ball of the Ball. Jennifer
Elliott’s entry, titled “Space
Ball,” won by receiving the
most votes throughout the
evening. The winning ball
is pictured at left.
Two carnival booths were
also introduced incorporating the
ball theme. VML and Kuhn &
Wittenborn sponsored a putting
contest and bulls-eye contest,
respectively. Contestants added to the
evening’s proceeds by buying chances to
sink a hole-in-one or toss darts at pictures of their

The event committee is already looking
forward to next year’s art auction. “Building on the
ideas and innovations introduced this year —and
the enthusiasm of those attending—the 2001
Bounce Back Ball promises to keep the
‘fun’ in fund raising,” Cathy Doyal, Rick’s Place
president said. Look in the next newsletter or visit

We love it when people enjoy the Bounce

are great, but it takes more than that—and
we know you have more to give. Serve on a
committee, assist with fund raising, or become
a mentor.
Please consider joining this growing and
extremely beneficial organization.

Return to: Rick’s Place, 4350 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Suite 350, Fairway, Kansas 66205
Come join us for cocktails
and hors’douvres at the
Uptown Theatre on January
30th from 5– 7 pm.
Why? Because our bylaws say
we must have an Annual
Meeting—and because you
know you’re stir-crazy from sitting at home being cold and
cranky—and because you'll see
some folks you know and like
and even respect—and because
the Uptown has a cool new
look and of course you want to
tell your friends you’ve seen it!
Now, surely that's enough reasons to come.
But please call to RSVP—
(913) 362-7000—so we make
sure we have plenty of those little finger food thingies
for you.
