Welcome to Lobos Basketball!
I am pleased to welcome you to another exciting season of Men’s basketball at Monterey
Peninsula College. I appreciate the efforts and hard work of our coaching staff and players as
they begin their 2002-2003-2004 season.
Our basketball players have dual roles as athletes and as students. At MPC we are committed to
the success of our players on the court as well as in the classroom. Head basketball coach, Blake
Spiering, embodies this commitment. He is keenly interested in the academic endeavors of his
athletes and their achievements both on and off the court.
This basketball season will be an exciting one and I look forward to watching our players in
action. Please join me in supporting and cheering on our team. Go Lobos!

Welcome!
Monterey Peninsula College is proud of its Men’s Basketball Program and the success they have
achieved on and off the court.
Head Coach Blake Spiering starts his secondfirst season as head coach of the Lobos. The Lobos
will play an aggressive in your face defense and will push the ball up the floor on offense. You can
look forward to entertaining, fast paced basketball.
At Monterey Peninsula College we strive for our student athletes to have success on the court and
in the classroom. Many of our participants have gone on to compete in basketball and complete
their education at four-your institutions. This season will be no different.
Many people work together to make this opportunity possible. The MPC administration, faculty
and staff, including our President, Dr. Kirk Avery, and the Board of Trustees are very supportive
of the athletic program. We rely on the athletic staff members pictured in this program to work
together to enhance each athlete’s experience.
Monterey Peninsula College has a rich tradition of helping student athletes achieve their goals.
Thank you for your support of this effort.
GO LOBOS!

Lyndon Schutzler has been the Athletic Director for four years and the Division chair of
Physical Education and Dance for 10 years.

Wildcat Baseball team.
HISTORY
Monterey Peninsula College commenced its operation in September of 1947 on the campus of
Monterey High School, holding classes from 4 to 10 p.m. daily. During this first year 87 acres
of land were purchased on Fremont Street. The following September classes opened in converted
barracks buildings with 280 students and 20 faculty members. The campus was originally designed
for approximately1,000 students, but by 1957 the enrollment had approached this figure and it
4
was evident that new buildings were necessary. The engineering building was constructed in 1958,
the library in 1960, and the art and music center and swimming pool in 1962.The junior college
separated from the Monterey Union High School District in 1961 and became a separate junior
college district. With this reorganization, the Carmel Unified School District became part of the
Peninsula-wide junior college district. The student population continued to grow as well as the
need for additional classrooms. In 1965 the building program was renewed, and the “temporary”
buildings of 1948 were replaced with new buildings for business, humanities, life science,
physical education, physical science and social science. The lecture forum, the college theater,
and the college center were part of this campus renewal. In 1973, the college began operating a
satellite campus at Fort Ord in cooperation with the U.S. Army primarily for the benefit of Armed
Forces personnel and their family members. In 1982-83, Monterey Peninsula College was selected
as the site for the Maurine Church Coburn School of Nursing, established with a grant from the
Maurine Church Coburn Charitable Trust under the leadership of Milton C. Coburn. The school
is operated through proceeds from that grant administered by the Community Hospital
Foundation, which owns and operates Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula and the
Community Hospital Recovery Center. During August, 1988, the engineering building was
remodeled with funds from the Community Hospital Foundation to house the School of Nursing.
Monterey Peninsula College is part of California’s public community college system of 108
campuses in
72 districts across the state. It is a comprehensive community college that responds to the
educational, cultural, and recreational needs of community members, insofar as its resources
permit. The college serves the communities of Big Sur, Carmel, Carmel Valley, Del Rey Oaks,
Marina, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Presidio of Monterey Annex, Sand City, and
Seaside. Monterey Peninsula College classes are held on the main campus during Fall and
Spring semesters, Early Spring, and Summer sessions.
MISSION
Monterey Peninsula College provides a quality learning experience for students by offering a
variety of programs and services which are dedicated to excellence and which meet community
needs. Monterey Peninsula College offers a stimulating, high quality, low-cost environment for
students desiring to transfer, prepare for emerging job opportunities, and improve their lives.
Monterey Peninsula College provides a positive atmosphere for learning and supports
opportunities for growth for all members of the community, regardless of their circumstances.
Monterey Peninsula College is a community of learners, engaging minds in the active pursuit and
sharing
of knowledgeby offering courses and programs:

realize their rights, freedoms, and responsibilities in the community and the larger society of
which they are a part.
PHILOSOPHY
5
Monterey Peninsula College is committed to the ideal of academic freedom derived through
careful and critical appraisal, and in turn, provides a place where students may freely formulate
their ideas and values. All members of the college community support the ideals of excellence,
human worth, and realization of human potential. Monterey Peninsula College provides
opportunities for development of skills and knowledge that will enable students of all ages and
backgrounds to become, and remain, productive in their chosen vocations, both for the sake of
the individual and society. Through research, self-appraisal, and institutional planning, Monterey
Peninsula College responds to unmet needs of the community and to changing expectations within
the worlds of education and work. As the College looks outward to the community and finds
meaning and opportunity in its diversity, so it extends its reach to the global community in which
its members may discover a new sense of place. Monterey Peninsula College opens its doors to all
members
of the community -- young and older adults, those who deal with challenges to the quality of their
lives or work, the military and their dependents, the laborer, the merchant, and the artist, in order
to engage them as willing partners in helping to meet their goal of self-fulfillment. At the same
time, the college participates in partnerships with private enterprise, public agencies, and
educational institutions in order to further the academic and work-related aspirations of the
community. To carry out its Mission and support its Philosophy, Monterey Peninsula College will:
1. Provide excellence in education for students planning to transfer to
a four-year college or university;

to freshman and sophomore students at the University of California, California State
University, and private colleges and universities.

2003-20042003 Boys’ Basketball Camps
Monterey Peninsula College Boys” Basketball Camps is one of the premier basketball camps on
the Peninsula. Our goal is to give each camper as much time and attention on the court as they
can handle, while at the same time helping each individual develop skills and knowledge to
become a worthy team member, family member, and worthwhile citizen.
Monterey Peninsula College Boys Basketball Camps emphasize the importance of building a solid
foundation of fundamental skills from which basketball excellence can be further developed. The
outstanding Men’s Basketball staff at MPC excels in teaching campers the fundamentals of
basketball in a positive and enthusiastic environment. Each day the staff utilizes a progression of
drills, games, and fun competitions designed to provide maximum opportunity for individual skill
development and to generally increase campers’ basketball knowledge and confidence.
The MPC Boys Basketball Camp is sponsored by the Basketball Office and directed by Blake
Spiering, head basketball coach and Dedrick Brooks, assistant basketball coach. Camp will
provide a wholesome atmosphere in which each youngster receives expert instruction in
