Welcome to Lobos Basketball
I am very happy to welcome you to the 2008 Lobos Basketball season at Monterey Peninsula
College. Coach Blake Spiering and his coaching staff are dedicated to the development of
student athletes, promoting success in the classroom and on the court.
The Lobos Basketball team features players who have worked hard to prepare themselves to
represent MPC. Please join me in showing our support for these student athletes throughout the
season. Go Lobos!
Sincerely,
Dr. Douglas Garrison
President/ Superintendent
Monterey Peninsula College
3
Welcome!
Monterey Peninsula College is proud of its Men’s Basketball Program and the success they have
achieved on and off the court.
Head Coach Blake Spiering starts his seventh season as head coach of the Lobos. The Lobos will
play an aggressive in your face defense and will push the ball up the floor on offense. You can
look forward to entertaining, fast paced basketball.
At Monterey Peninsula College we strive for our student athletes to have success on the court
and in the classroom. Many of our participants have gone on to compete in basketball and
complete their education at four-your institutions. This season will be no different.
Many people work together to make this opportunity possible. The MPC administration, faculty
and staff, including our President, Dr. Douglas Garrison, and the Board of Trustees are very
supportive of the athletic program. We rely on the athletic staff members mentioned in this
program to work together to enhance each athlete’s experience.
Monterey Peninsula College has a rich tradition of helping student athletes achieve their goals.
Thank you for your support of this effort.
GO LOBOS!

HISTORY
Monterey Peninsula College commenced its operation in September of 1947 on the campus of
Monterey High School, holding classes from 4 to 10 p.m. daily. During this first year, 87 acres
of land were purchased on Fremont Street. The following September classes opened in converted
barracks buildings with 280 students and 20 faculty members. The campus was originally
designed for approximately 1,000 students, but by 1957 the enrollment had approached this
figure and it was evident that new buildings were necessary.
The engineering building was constructed in 1958, the library in 1960, and the art and music
center and swimming pool in 1962.The junior college separated from the Monterey Union High
School District in 1961 and became a separate junior college district. With this reorganization,
the Carmel Unified School District became part of the Peninsula-wide junior college district. The
student population continued to grow as well as the need for additional classrooms.
In 1965 the building program was renewed, and the “temporary” buildings of 1948 were replaced
with new buildings for business, humanities, life science, physical education, physical science
and social science. The lecture forum, the college theater, and the college center were part of this
campus renewal. In 1973, the college began operating a satellite campus at Fort Ord in
cooperation with the U.S. Army primarily for the benefit of Armed Forces personnel and their
family members.
In 1982-83, Monterey Peninsula College was selected as the site for the Maurine Church Coburn
School of Nursing, established with a grant from the Maurine Church Coburn Charitable Trust
under the leadership of Milton C. Coburn. The school is operated through proceeds from that
grant administered by the Community Hospital Foundation, which owns and operates
Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula and the Community Hospital Recovery Center.
During August, 1988, the engineering building was remodeled with funds from the Community
Hospital Foundation to house the School of Nursing. Monterey Peninsula College is part of
California’s public community college system of 108 campuses in 72 districts across the state. It
is a comprehensive community college that responds to the educational, cultural, and recreational
needs of community members, insofar as its resources permit.
The college serves the communities of Big Sur, Carmel, Carmel Valley, Del Rey Oaks, Marina,
Monterey, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Presidio of Monterey Annex, Sand City, and Seaside.
Monterey Peninsula College classes are held on the main campus during Fall and Spring
semesters, Early Spring, and Summer sessions.

THE LOBOS SUPPORT STAFF
Christine Hunsley
Division Office Manager
Jeff McCart
Trainer
Christine Hunsley is our athletic programs
division office manager. Christine always
provides invaluable support to our basketball
program.
We appreciate the time and
assistance Christine has given to the MPC

In order for athletes to compete successfully
on the inter-collegiate level, they must be
physically fit and healthy. It is Jeff’s job to
help educate the athletes and coaches,
prevent injuries, and rehabilitate injuries.
There are very few trainers that have the
enthusiasm and knowledge for their job or
the compassion for athletes like Jeff. Our
basketball players are very fortunate to have
a trainer of Jeff’s caliber.

Although Mr. Anderson is an extremely busy
