**CONDITIONAL REGISTRATION**
At all times when driven on the road, the member must
carry a financial JDCHR Club membership card (or the
vehicle is unregistered) and the current magazine showing the event to which the vehicle is being driven.
The Club‘s by-laws also require that a member must attend at least three Club events in a Club-registered vehicle per financial year, to maintain his entitlement to club
plated registration.

FROM THE PRESIDENT
A
great Australia Day, with 27 magnificent Jaguars on display at Customs
House for the public to inspect and admire. There was certainly plenty of
interest shown in our cars, with the public asking lots of questions, and
potential new members gained. The organisers were very pleased saying
we added to the spectacle of the day and wanted to make sure we were coming again next year.
Thank you everyone that came along.
It was a sad loss when Harvey Birtwistle succumbed to his stroke and passed away during the
Xmas period. A large contingent of members representing the Club and all Harvey‘s Jaguar friends
attended the funeral to farewell him, he was a true gentleman and will be missed.
Margaret Perry, who was assistant to Harvey, has accepted the position of Treasurer, thank you
Margaret, all Club members are very appreciative and your efforts are appreciated.
On the health front, it is very pleasing to report the ongoing progress of Mike
Laugesen, who also suffered a stroke in January. Mike has been transferred to the
rehabilitation unit, and is expected to make a significant recovery, and is no doubt
evident as Mike asks questions about what‘s happening in the Club and his Jaguars - we wish you well Mike.
This month we have a special event - Max‘s 90th Birthday Run.
Inside the HUB, you will read a short précis on how Max was able
to find and buy back his very rare XK140, built
from the factory with some specially installed go
fast bits, which allowed Max to successfully race
her. Along the way he collected numerous wins,
and a record fastest time in class for King Edward
Park. Come along and help us celebrate Max reaching this significant milestone,
and getting the XK140 back!
Among all our events this year, we have two major events which require significant
planning. For the last four years, John McAlpine has been Grand Marshal for our annual JDCHR
Hunter Region All British Display Day. John has decided to step down from this role, and we require someone to come forward to fill this position, and start the planning and organising process.
There is a lot of preliminary work done, and we have our successful formula
from previous years, so please consider taking on this role; there is plenty
of assistance to hand.
Our 30th Anniversary Dinner is the other major event scheduled for 25th
May. Please mark it in your diary as all Club members will be paid for by the
Club, and guests will be $30/head. We are looking for an entertaining guest
speaker, so if any member has any pull with the famous, please let us
know.
We look forward to seeing everyone at future Club outings, and our Club meeting,
safe and enjoyable driving.

the next few months which will be in the calendar. He reminded members to keep a look out in the
Hub for events and if members have any suggestions of events to let him know as he is always
open to ideas. Ian advised Graeme Lloyd will be in attendance at mid week run 6 February, 25 th
May 30th Anniversary Dinner. Don mentioned Observation and Economy runs coming up. Ian said
Singleton meeting in March is cancelled and will be held at Club Macquarie on Tuesday 27 th
March. Ian gave a talk on the XK140 which Max Paterson has repurchased. Bill moved that his

General Business: Steve Lilly suggested for members to purchase white shirts and green ties
with club logo to be worn at special occasions. Don gave a short report about his recent trip to
New Zealand. Graeme Cox mentioned a new banner is required and will look at getting quotes.
Margaret Holt and Margaret Perry requested mid week to be occasionally on a Tuesday. Roger
Holt mentioned after running over the ―wombat‖ it took 3 times at the garage to fix steering alignment which was finally solved by Trivetts in Sydney. Don Anderson and Leyland Rix bought
power steering racks from England for their E Types.
Problem Corner: Stephen Hobbins suggested we should have solutions to problems raised
Ian Hissey won the raffle prize of Chocolates and Computer Mouse

SOCIAL SECRETARY’S REPORT
H
i everyone, the Christmas break is well and truly over and we are back
to normality again.
Our popular member Harvey Birtwistle passed away and members attended a farewell
service at Ryde in Sydney on Monday 7th January. Harvey was a true gentleman and only six
months earlier had joined the committee as Treasurer. Harvey‘s happy face and friendly personality will be missed by us all, our condolences to his family from all at JDCHR.
We‘ve had two events in January, a mid week run to the Swansea RSL for lunch, with a morning
tea stop at Martinsville. We had a good attendance with Ian taking us on the scenic route around
the south of Lake Macquarie.
The Australia Day display at the Newcastle Foreshore was another grand display of 27 Jaguars all
looking their best for the day. We all had a great day together under the shade of the trees catching up with members new and old in the cool breeze.
Coming up this month we get an early start with a mid week run on Wednesday 6th Feb to Terrigal, where we will be meeting Grahame Lloyd from Jaguar Australia magazine. Graham wants to
interview members and photograph their cars for a feature article in the magazine.
The weekend 9-10th February is Gnoo Blas Classic car Show in Orange, this is always a great
weekend for members.
A mid week run to Largs pub for lunch on the 27th will be another good time for the members, the
grub at the Largs pub is always delicious and the company is friendly.
In March we have the Sojourn Inland to the Coast run from 16th March to 6th April, a three week
holiday for those that are going, including the 2013 National Rally. While they are away we will do
a mid week run on the 21st March and on Saturday 30th we will go to the Toronto Classic Boat
show, I‘ll give the details in the next Hub.
I have made up a schedule of events and will email it out to members to include their names for
upcoming functions. When you get the email, please let me know what you would like to attend.
Any suggestions you may have for outings are welcome, just email me and we can put your ideas
to the committee for consideration.

FROM THE EDITOR
t’s great to be back into the swing of Club activities after the Christmas/New
Year hiatus. The weather has become distinctly summery, which I like, but we
have had some decidedly uncomfortable days, dare I say un-Jaguar-ish.
Items this month cover our first Mid Week Run for the year, along with our
Australia Day display at Newcastle Foreshore which has become one of our biggest events each
year.
This year‘s event turned out to be rather special, even by our high standards. We had 27 Jaguars
in attendance, a record for this day, and second only to our All British Display Days in July. But
really special was Max Paterson bringing along the Club's best kept secret for ages—his very
recently re-acquired XK140 that he‘d previously owned from new. More later on this beauty. Australia Day was blessed with perfect weather, at least until a sudden downpour in mid-afternoon. It
happened that I as lunching with the whole family in Customs House when the rain came, so I was
very appreciative to discover that Margarate Holt and Kelly McInnes had installed towel rolls in my
car‘s partially open windows and gathered up my picnic gear. That‘s a nice part of our Club—
looking out for each other.
Apart from that, our thoughts are starting to anticipate the upcoming Club tour to Wollongong (in a
roundabout way) for the 2013 National Rally (see Page 28). Time to think about any maintenance
requirements before asking the cars to undertake the long journey!
In the garage, the XJ6 threw another wrong-un at me recently, when the driver‘s door refused to
open from the inside. Inspection in side the door after removing the armrest and door lining, revealed the miraculous disappearance of a small
clip. I say miraculous, because I expected to find
the missing clip, either complete or in bits, in the
bottom of the door. Nothing!
Not having a replacement clip to hand, and knowing the holiday period was upon us, I was forced to
resort to ―Engineer‘s intuition‖, and fashioned a
suitable temporary device from sheetmetal. After
the hullabaloo of Christmas/New Year, I found the
requisite clips in stock at Jagdaim in Melbourne, ordered a couple and received them the next day.
I think you‘d struggle to beat that, even for a modern Australian or Japanese brand!
I‘ve always had excellent service from Jagdaim, just can‘t get them to sign up for an advert in the
HUB—yet!!!
Apart from putting together the various Club magazines each month, all affiliated Club editors are
asked to read and score articles once a year, for the Paul Skilleter Award for the best article of the
year. This task, which involves some 21 articles across 7 Clubs (we don‘t score our own Club),
has taken up some time during January. The result will be announced at the National Rally.

Vale Harvey Birtwistle
H
arvey Birtwistle was passionate about his love of Jaguar, and proudly entered his beloved X300 in State and National Concours, where he won numerous Gold Trophies.
Harvey joined the JDCHR in 2010, and quickly became one of
our keenest members. Last year he allowed us to elect him as Treasurer,
a job he took to enthusiastically until his untimely death on 29 December
2012.
Harvey came on as many JDCHR Club outings as he could, always
ready to chip in and lend a hand, join in a conversation or just walk
around and admire the cars on display. Before coming down and settling
on the Central Coast, Harvey had been a member of JDCQ Sunshine
Coast register, where he was similarly held in high regard.
Harvey had just bought a Daimler Double Six, which he planned to give his meticulous loving care
treatment, bringing it up to Concours standard – there was no lower standard for Harvey.
Harvey had other interests too, including his favourite miniature trains.
Harvey was one of Nature‘s gentlemen, an honest and learned man who enhanced anyone he
met, and he will be missed by all members of the JDCHR, his many Jaguar friends around Australia and all others who knew him.

MAX PATERSON’S BIRTHDAY SURPRISE
E
very so often in Jaguar circles, a really nice story
comes along. This is one such story, which concerns our member Max Paterson, whose membership dates back 20 years. But long before that, in
1955, Max bought a new XK140. He raced and hillclimbed the car very successfully in NSW and Queensland,
before selling it to help fund a business venture in the early
sixties.
As often happens in these circumstances, Max longed for the
car after they separated, and about five years later, he began
to try to track it down. Fifteen years ago, with the help of Les
Hughes (Jaguar magazine), who ran a story and a plea for
information, Max was able to contact the owner, who pre- Max Paterson—with a big smile
on his face
dictably, didn‘t want to sell the car. However, realising the
pedigree of the car and the relationship it had had with its first
owner, the owner generously allowed Max to drive it occasionally on visits to Brisbane.
Then recently, as Max approached his 90 th birthday, he
got a phonecall—would he like to buy the car back? Of
course Max couldn‘t wait to reach an agreement, and reacquired the car, totally restored to immaculate condition,
that he‘d owned from new 57 years ago. He picked it up
five days before the Australia Day gathering in Newcastle, and couldn‘t wipe the smile off his face as he presented it to fellow Club members, in the Club's\s best
kept secret of the decade.

JANUARY MID WEEK RUN
his particular month‘s Mid Week Run happened to coincide with a two week period
when two of our Sydney-based grandchildren were staying with us. It also coincided
with Julianne (an infrequent mid Week Runner) being on leave from her work. Result? All four
of us drove out to Club Macquarie in the XJ6 to start
the event.
We all had a nice drive down through Freemans
Waterhole to Martinsville where we enjoyed morning
tea, albeit feeling a little short of shade as the day
warmed up. Those enjoying the outing were:

MY MOTHER DROVE INTO THE LAKE!

um (89), who lives on the Central Coast, picked me up off the train at Tuggerah station, for a morning of shopping. On the way I saw Spotlight- ―Stop, stop!‖ I cried ---
She decided to stay in her new car, while I grabbed a few bargains. She loved her new
car, a gift from her husband before he passed away. As I went to get out of the car, I
noticed my handbag was wet, for 4" up from the bottom, on the outside.
―Oh, "she said. ―You young ones and your wretched bottles of water!‖ My bottle was still full, upright with the lid on. On closer inspection I saw my footwell was 4" deep in water and so was
hers...and both our trouser legs were wet.
―Oh,‖ she said, ―it must have happened when I drove into the Lake 3 days ago, after heavy rain
and local flooding...I'll scoop and soak it out, till you come back from Spotlight.‖ The back seat
wells were awash too. She said they were all going through the water so she just followed!
We were burning to use up a $40 credit she had on a refund, which expired that day. I had to return to Toronto that afternoon, so time was short. On our way further to the shops I rang Ian. He
nearly came through the phone. (They get a bit precious about cars don't they???)
Ian said we must go immediately to the service dealer at Wyong. Well, we had to go shopping
first, you ladies would understand that... After shopping and a quick early lunch, Mum dropped me
back at Wyong station and went to the dealer. She rang later that night to say the carpets all had
to be replaced, as it was salt water. She was a bit shocked.
She rang the next night in major shock, the car was a write-off. ―Yes, yes,‖ Ian said, ―that would be
right‖. I asked Mum what happened to all the other cars that that had driven through the water
before her.
―Oh well‖, she said, ―there really was only me. But I did a 3-point turn in the flooded cul-de-sac!!!‖
Poor Mum, she believed us all when we told her it was time to catch the bus from now on—there
had been other misdemeanours.
She banked the insurance cheque and shed a tear...
Just to add - she was so proud of being able to do a 3 point turn. And who wouldn‘t be, especially
when the kerbs are underwater?

THE HUB GOES GLOBAL
I
have written occasionally, about the email contacts I follow up when necessary, seeking permission to publish material in the HUB, which I‘ve seen in other publications, both hard copy
and online. One such contact, with David Reilly in the United States, led to last month‘s story
about Tony Bayliss‘s S Type Drophead coupe. The opportunity to utilise items from across the
world has proved to be mutual—David had reproduced my original enquiry and one of our HUB
articles in The Newsletter of The International Jaguar ‘S’-Type Register Volume 7, Number 5—
see below.

“We received a copy of The Official Journal
of the Jaguar Drivers’ Club, Hunter Region (Australia) from its Editor, Phil
McLeod (See Letter on page 8), and were amazed to see his report on a visit to
the Art Gallery in Sydney.
Phil said, “(It) is not something I normally
look forward to with great relish. Call me a
philistine, but I can often only appreciate a
small fraction of the artworks displayed; but
nevertheless, these visits take place a couple
of times a year as I accompany Julianne,
much more an art appreciator than me. She
likens it to her own times at car events
where, it has to be said, she„s there to keep
me company rather than to swoon over the
cars. … I discovered a car element to some
other art elsewhere in the Art Gallery!”
The pieces he described were:
Harbinger, “The reason this work caught my eye is obvious—the pretty faithful
representation of a Jaguar „S‟-type.”
Bugatti Type 35, “a very real looking Bugatti, except that it„s on its side and its
shape is distorted as if it„s been in a crash (but no scratches to be seen!).”
In doing some research, your Editors found that the artist who did the „S‟-type
piece is Jason Moad. He is a recognized artist
„down under‟, being a finalist in a number of
awards and being „exhibited‟ in several galleries.
He had also done a 2012 calendar that featured
our beloved „S‟-type, appearing on the cover (the
original Harbinger painting) and as both the
January and September illustrations. The calendar, titled Unquiet Places. Paintings and Drawings, is also available in a 2013 version

Hi David,
I enjoy reading your newsletters re. The „S‟-type, although I don‟t own one. I‟m
the writer/editor/publisher of my local Jaguar Club‟s monthly magazine the
HUB. I don‟t make a habit of lifting content from other magazines or journals
(it‟s lazy editing, to my thinking), but I was wondering how you‟d feel about me
using this remembrance on Mike Hawthorne, or other material from your Newsletter from time to time. It would be properly attributed, of course.

THE PERFECT DRINKS CART
E
very so often I come across a Jaguar-related article that stands out as really relevant to
my interests. By now everyone will have seen numerous pieces about the XF Sportbrake
soon to go on sale in Britain, but here‘s one that caught my eye for all the right reasons.
It‘s from www.classic driver.com/uk/magazine. Now finally a good reason to own a station wagon!

―German estates might be assessed in terms of litres of luggage space – but in the
case of their premium British equivalents, such as the new Jaguar XF Sportbrake,
different standards apply. Approximately how many boxes of Tullibardine whisky can
you fit in one car? Mathias Paulokat heads to Scotland to find out.
It‘s a competitive business,
this luggage capacity, with
the three top dogs from
Audi, BMW and Mercedes
trying to outdo each other
on every last cc of bootspace. Taking on such
Teutonic dominance – in
the luxury estate sector, of
all places – is not so much
brave, as heroic.
But for those who find the
Mercedes E-Class too conservative, perhaps, and the BMW 5 Series Touring and Audi A6
just a little too brash, well, now there‘s the Jaguar XF Sportbrake. And Jaguar reckons that
this model has the potential to become a big-volume seller. Well, here we are, up in Scotland to test this claim for ourselves. Will the Sportbrake earn its spurs? We started Edinburgh, whence the somewhat antiquated on-board navigation guided us unerringly south –
to Floors Castle in Kelso.
Once there, we considered the figures: by folding the rear seats, the Sportbrake offers up to
1675 litres of loading space – not bad. Only the Mercedes has the ability to swallow more,
and our British contender is arguably more elegant; definitely
one of the better-looking shooting
brakes/ large-capacity vans
(depending on how you see
them). Only the diesel-engined
models are available, in 2.2- and
3.0-litre capacities, the latter a
turbocharged V6 that comes as
either a 240PS Diesel or →

a 275PS Diesel S derivative. Each emits 163g/km of CO2 and returns 46mpg on the Combined cycle.
Completely sober still, of course, it‘s time for
some driving impressions. Here, the fourcylinder 2.2-litre engine (we had the more powerful 200PS version, with its 450Nm of torque –
so not quite the entry-level model, but still…)
impressed us with its willingness to pick up the
revs, and claims to speed the occupants
rom rest to 62mph in a mere 8.8 seconds.
Though it probably took a little longer with all
that whisky on board.
But enough of the number-crunching. Stylistically, the Sportbrake undeniably scores plenty
of points. At the front, anyway. We‘re less sure
about the side view. But never mind all that –
it‘s the back that interests us most at the moment, since we have 25 boxes of Tullibardine
single malt to stack in that capacious luggage
area. True, that equates to only (only?!) 105
litres of the golden liquid, but we discovered to
our joy that we could stack all 25 boxes in our
XF Sportbrake in less than three minutes. Which is lucky, because there are 100 official
whisky distilleries in Scotland.
Even better in terms of performance and refinement is the six-cylinder diesel: especially
the Diesel S, with its 6.6-seconds to 62mph performance. More important still is the harmonious interaction of
powertrain, chassis and
assistance systems. Even
the sound is right. Fuel
consumption is claimed to
be a startlingly good
(considering the performance) 46mpg, while an
OTR price of £44,355 to
£51,505 (for Diesel S
versions in various trims)
is even more reason to
celebrate.

All models boast factory-fitted self-levelling air suspension at the rear axle, keeping that
whisky good and settled, and the standard eight-speed automatic transmission avoids shaking it up as we pick up speed along hilly Scottish roads. Oh, and the second row of seats
offers 48mm more headroom than you get in the saloon. As I said earlier, you can squeeze
a lot into it. Even when you‘re just carrying people.‖

Driven: Jaguar XJR-15
So THIS is what it’s like to drive at Le Mans? Well, sort of. The XJR-15 is that strange
combination of completely mad performance coupled with everyday niceties such as
air-con and an indicator stalk. Fast? Yes. Suitable for driving on the public road?
Why not… we just have.
Do not confuse this midengined Jaguar of the early
1990s with the XJ220 of the
same period. Both wear the
Jaguar badge and both are
products of Tom Walkinshaw
Racing (TWR). But where the
massive-looking,
turbo-V6powered XJ220 was always
intended to be a road car, the
only slightly smaller XJR-15 with its 6.0-litre naturally aspirated V12 and carbonfibre tub - is just a few steps away from
the TWR Group C XJR-9. This was the car that won the 1990 Le Mans 24 Hours.
Ironically, it was the XJ220 rather than the XJR-15 that was to see significant action at Le
Mans, while the latter starred in the three-race 1991 Jaguar Sport Intercontinental Challenge which supported Grand Prix races at Monaco, Silverstone and Spa. Around half of
the 50 or so cars built were road versions, and just a handful actually registered.
This example, owned by Classic Driver dealer Rod Leach, who has had the car since 2008,
is one. It‘s hardly completed more than 500 road miles in its life and is fresh out of a period
of painstaking engineering development work by Don Law Racing. The
British marque/model experts were
instructed to: ―Go right the way
through every aspect, and do whatever is necessary to make it into a
usable road car.‖
Don, Justin and the boys have certainly done that.

To slip into the seat, first one has to negotiate
a fair distance of carbonfibre sill. This is the
tub that provides such stiffness, security and
solidity – a variation served the XJR-9 well
enough.
Once in the tightish racing seat, it‘s an impressive view ahead. You sit very close to
your passenger, both seats slightly angled
inwards so your feet seem to touch. The righthand-side gear lever is close to the small
steering wheel which – for once – has a
‗flattened‘ lower section of necessity, rather than design.
Racing belts done up, the essential Peltor headset connected and working, it‘s time to fire
up the big V12 and lay waste to some Staffordshire A-roads, first with Justin Law behind
the wheel.
The deal was that Justin would warm the car up, show me its performance and how to get
the best out of it. Which he did. Oh yes, he did.
It‘s mightily fast – obviously – but the overriding impression is of total solidity (the engine is
bolted directly to the tub), a magnificently smooth engine and a ride that balances the
need to accommodate rough British roads, yet stay flat in corners.
Adopting the ‗it‘s a car‘ approach, when my turn came I just snuck the lever into first and
set off. It‘s a five-speed all-synchro ‗box (as opposed to the 6-speed straight-cut one in the
competition cars), another part of the £55k premium for the road version, over and above
the XJR-15‘s £600,000 price tag.
The clutch is fine - though I do confess to one stall, just as we were back at base. Keeping
the revs in the lower half of the range on a wet, greasy day it‘s easy to drive. The view
ahead is good, and who is going to try and overtake you, anyway? The steering is deliciously direct, though the brakes need a bit of warming-up, revealing their racing roots.
I‘ve never driven one, but I am sort of assuming the experience is similar to a McLaren F1.
Both have carbonfibre chassis with 6.0-litre V12s. And each carries bodywork styled by
Peter Stevens. It‘s far more sophisticated than a Roush-tuned Ford GT, and totally different from the Law family (650bhp) XJ220 that I tried later.
In all honesty, driving the XJR-15 any distance is likely to be a challenge. ‗At Le Mans‘:
yes. ‗To Le Mans‘: well, it would take a brave man and a very accommodating passenger.
But with the work that Don Law Racing has carried out to bring the car just back into the
envelope of usability, it‘s a car like few others.‖

GNOO BLAS CLASSIC CAR SHOW
Friday 08th — Sunday 10th February 2013
Gnoo Blas Motor Racing Circuit - most of Australia‘s best drivers competed there.
Jack Brabham started his road racing career at Gnoo Blas and held the lap record at more than
102mph up to the last meeting in 1961.
Other drivers who raced on Gnoo Blas include Bob Jane (Maserati), Stan Jones (Maybach), Prince
Bira of Siam (Maserati), Peter Whitehead and Tony Gaze (Ferraris), Alex Mildren (Cooper Climax),
Ted Gray (Tornado), Doug Whiteford (Maserati), Tom Sulman (Aston Martin), Leo and Ian Geoghegan
(Holdens and Jaguars), Des West, Arnold Glass, Paul Samuels, Max Stewart, Jack Myers and Len Lukey.
Gnoo Blas in 1960 was the venue for the inaugural Australian Touring Car Championship, which
attracted a field of 50 drivers and a dozen different makes of cars. David McKay (Jaguar), Bill Pitt
(Jaguar) and Ron Hodgson (Jaguar) were the place-getters.
The Gnoo Blas Classic has become one of the best shows in
country NSW with more than 300 cars and outstanding
guests for the enthusiasts' dinner at night.
The guests include Jim Richards and Colin Bond. Both are
icons in motor sport. The show will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the old Gnoo Blas track which opened in January
1953 with a motorcycle meeting on the Saturday and a car
meeting the following Monday.

O
ne day in the jungle, a chimpanzee invented some tools to help him eat his dinner. One
was a flat stick sharpened along one edge he used to cut his food. The other was a
stick with four smaller sticks attached to the end, each sharpened to a point. He used
this to spear his food and place it in his mouth. The chimp was very proud of his inventions which he called his ‗one-point tool‘ and his ‗four-point tool‘.
One day he awoke to find the four-point tool missing. The chimp was distraught. He ran around
the jungle trying to find his precious tool. First he came upon the lion.
‗Lion, lion!‘ he cried. ‗Have you seen my four-point tool?‘ ‗No,‘ replied the lion, ‗I have not seen
your four-point tool.‘
Then the chimp came upon the gorilla. ‗Gorilla, gorilla!‘ he cried. ‗Have you seen my four-point
tool?‘
‗No,‘ replied the gorilla, ‗I have not seen your four-point tool.‘ Then the chimp came upon the jaguar. ‗Jaguar, jaguar!‘ he cried. ‗Have you seen my four-point tool?‘ ‗Yes,‘ replied the jaguar, ‘I‘ve
seen your four-point tool‘.
‗Well, where is it?‘ enquired the chimp. ‗I ate it,‘ said the jaguar, rather smugly.
‗Why would you do that?‘ cried the bewildered chimp. ‗Because,‘ replied the big cat calmly, ‗I‘m a
four-point tool-eater jaguar!‘
I was at an ATM yesterday when a little old lady
asked if I could check her balance , so I pushed
her over.
