Northwest MedStar Ground Ambulances
Giving Our Best to Those We Serve
Northwest MedStar
Ground Ambulances
Northwest MedStar is the region’s premier critical
care transport service. Dedicated to the safe,
compassionate care and transport of critically ill or
injured patients to health care facilities throughout
northwestern United States and Canada, Northwest
MedStar utilizes helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft and
critical care ambulances. NW MedStar provides
immediate on-scene emergency helicopter
response, interfacility transports and assists with
search and rescue missions.
Critical Care Ground Transport
Northwest MedStar introduced customized, top-of-the-line ambulances to its fleet of aircraft
to safely transport critically ill or injured neonates, high-risk obstetric, pediatric and adult
patients throughout the Inland Northwest region. Ground transport services support the air operations of Northwest
MedStar, providing interfacility hospital transports and patient transportation and care when ground may be more
appropriate and during inclement weather conditions.
Critical Care Capabilities
The 2009 GMC G4500 Diesel, 14-foot ambulances are specially equipped to provide an environment that is conducive
for the care of critically injured and ill patients. Built on a GMC Savana Chassis, NW MedStar’s extra-long ambulances are
custom designed for longer distance transportations and boast several care capabilities:
• Liquid oxygen system to provide plenty of oxygen storage in a small space.
• Air compressor for blending compressed air with oxygen for precise oxygen delivery to newborn patients.
• Dedicated space to store, secure and provide power outlets for all critical care equipment including:
- LifePak 12 critical care monitor/defibrillator/external pacer with capability of continuously monitoring 4 or 12-lead
ECG, invasive and non-invasive blood pressure, oxygen saturation and end-tidal CO2.
- 3-channel IV pump.
- Syringe IV pumps for precise delivery of low-dose medications for newborn infants and children.
- Biomed Crossvent mechanical ventilators which are gas-powered microprocessor controlled, portable ventilators
capable of providing ventilatory assistance for all ages and sizes of patients.
- Fluid warmer.
- Refrigerator for keeping medications cool.
- On-board and portable suction units.
- Intra-aortic balloon pump for critically ill cardiac patients.
- Nitric oxide capability.

• Stryker Power-PRO XT stretcher utilizes a battery powered hydraulic system
that raises and lowers the patient with the touch of a button. This innovative
stretcher makes for a smoother loading process for the patient and less
back strain for the medical crew.
• Roof mounted heater/air conditioning unit provides excellent climate control.
• Ceiling mounted DVD player with 17 inch LCD screen, built for educational
purposes and pediatric patients to get their mind off being sick.
Safety
The safety of our patients, medical partners and the Northwest MedStar
critical care teams is our top priority. We work tirelessly to ensure our patients
receive the best medical care performed safely and efficiently. Our critical care
ambulances include several safety measures and protocols that maintain our
focus:
• Reinforced ribbed box design of patient compartment for extra strength.
• Strategically positioned, swiveling and locking captain’s seats allows the
medical team to provide patient care, reach equipment, environmental controls and perform duties without having to
unfasten their seat belts.
• Safety data recorder installed (similar to a “black-box” in a commercial airline).
• Rear mounted back-up cameras.
• 2000-watt Diesel back-up generator to provide back-up power source.
• Experienced EMT Drivers skilled in emergency vehicle operations.
Transport Teams
Critical care ambulances are staffed by members of the Northwest MedStar medical crew including a registered nurse dual
certified as a paramedic (RN/EMT-P) and respiratory therapist dual certified as an emergency medical technician (RT/EMT)
– the same dedicated and experienced teams that care for and transport patients in helicopters and airplanes. Montana
critical care teams consist of a registered nurse and a paramedic. The highest level of care is available 24 hours a day,
seven days a week. Each ambulance is driven by an experienced emergency vehicle operator certified as an emergency
medical technician (EMT).
