Northwest theatre students bring home awards, gear up for spring production Written by LaJuan Tallo Wednesday, 13 February 2013 16:49 Students in Northwest Mississippi Community College’s theatre program are not only preparing for their production of “Romeo and Juliet” later this month, they have been recently recognized at the 10th annual Allie Awards and attended the regional Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) in Georgia. Northwest brought home four Northwest Mississippi Theater Alliance awards, known as “Allies” at the awards banquet on Feb. 1. Both of the college’s 2012 productions won “Best of” awards. “Joined at the Head” won for Best Drama and “Scapin” won for Best Comedy. Camille Bishop of Senatobia took home an Allie for Best Performance of a Leading Actress in a Play for her role as Maggie Mulroney in “Joined at the Head.” Northwest Technical Director Joel King was recognized as Best Director of a Comedy for “Scapin.” Northwest competed in the Community Theater Division with DeSoto Family Theatre, Panola Playhouse and Kudzu Playhouse. Several students from the theatre department also attended the regional Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) Feb. 5-9 at Darton College in Albany, Ga. “Our students got some helpful feedback, were able to go to a lot of really good workshops and saw several really good productions. This combined with discussion about work we saw as a group will help highlight for them what elements are needed to create and produce a play effectively and strongly,” King said. Northwest will present Shakespeare’s classic “Romeo and Juliet” Feb. 28 - March 3 in the Fine Arts Auditorium on the Senatobia campus. Thursday through Saturday performances will begin at 7 p.m., with the Sunday matinee starting at 2 p.m. General admission for the performances is $10 for the general public and $5 for students and seniors.
