Regents Convene for January Meeting; renew Utterback's contract
The Seminole State College
Board of Regents convened Jan. 27
for the first time in the new year.
At their January meeting, the
SSC Board heard reports on campus activities, approved an increase
in lab and course fees and reviewed
the terms of the President’s employment.
During the President’s report to
the Board, Utterback provided a list
of the College’s accomplishments
during 2010 including the dedication
of the new student services center.
Also the adoption of a new institutional mission statement, and the successful kickoff of the “Shaping the
Future” Capital Campaign.
The President also informed the
board of the preparation for Higher
Education Day at the Capitol on Feb
22.
First on the agenda, the board
reviewed and approved a memorandum of understanding with Ramona
Munsell & Associates Consulting,
Inc. to develop a GEAR UP partnership application for federal funding.
“We have a long and successful
history with the Munsell firm. While
competition for funding is great, we
believe it is worth the investment in
making application for federal dollars,” said Dr. Jim Utterback.
For the next item, the board voted to increase lab fees from $30 per
course to $35 per course. This fee
will be used to cover increasing costs
of lab supplies and will only apply to
lab courses.
Next the board reviewed and approved new academic service fees that
will be required for particular courses of instruction or certain academic
programs. A $10 per credit hour fee
for Medical Laboratory Technology
courses and a $10 per course fee for
hybrid courses taught partially online
and partially in the traditional classroom setting were approved. The
final item was approval of a $5 electronic academic access per course fee
that will be charged to courses that
significantly utilize the College’s online learning management system.
The board retired into executive
session to discuss terms of employment for the president’s 2011 contract. After returning to open session,
the Board voted to renew Utterback’s
contract.
In making the motion on the
President’s contract, Regent Marilyn
Bradford said, “We appreciate Dr.
Utterback’s service, and his desire to
stay at Seminole State College and
move to renew his contract at the
same level of compensation.”
Following the meeting, Board
Chair Bill Huser commented that the
Board respected the President’s wishes to not increase his compensation at
this time. “Dr. Utterback asked that
the Board consider not awarding him
a raise until it is possible to also pro-
vide raises to faculty and staff.”
Utterback thanked the board and
stated that he was honored to serve as
president.
“I want to say publicly how much
I appreciate the support of the board,”
said Utterback. “As I complete my
fourteenth year at SSC, it is exciting
to reflect on the accomplishments of
the institution during these years. I
hope the Board, and everyone at the
College, will take great pride in the
successes of this great institution.”
Two items were approved on the
consent agenda: a contractual agreement with Sopo Ngwa Law Firm of
Tucson, Arizona to help recruit international students from Cameroon
and other African countries to attend
SSC and the approval of the 20112012 academic calendar.
Board members present at the
meeting included: Chairman Bill
Huser, Marci Donaho, David Wilson,
Marilyn Bradford and Leesa Adams.
SSC Global Studies Program to Travel to Costa Rica in Summer 2011
Seminole State College’s 2011
Global Studies excursions program
will travel to Costa Rica in July as
part of its summer program.
The thirteen day trip, slated for
July 27 – Aug. 8, 2011 will direct
travelers through the learning and
leisure of Costa Rica. They will
swim in both the Atlantic and Pacific
oceans, zip-line through a rainforest
canopy in Manuel Antonio National
Park, visit the Iruza volcano and sea
kayak in the Pacific.
The estimated cost for the Coast
Rica tour is $1,800.00.
Christian Morgan, SSC English
instructor, stresses that community
members are invited to participate
in the trip. “You need not be a SSC
student or enroll in the Global Studies course to enjoy this trip. Openings are limited, so apply for your
passport—if you don’t already have
one—and reserve your place now on
this tour full of history and culture,”
he said.
Morgan can be contacted at (405)
382-9207 or by email at c.morgan@
sscok.edu. Interested parties my also
contact Lori Eberhart at (405) 3829226 or by email at [email protected].

Higher Education Legislative Briefing
Dr. Glen D. Johnson, chancellor of the Oklahoma State System
of Higher Education, met with
50 area legislators and friends of
higher education Jan. 18 in McAlester to discuss the importance of
higher education in improving the
economy and business climate of
the state.
Seminole community leaders
were among those in attendance at
the Southeast Oklahoma Legislative Briefing held at Pete’s Place in
Krebs. A delegation representing
Seminole State College was led by
Lana Reynolds, SSC Vice-President for Institutional Advancement. Oklahoma State Senator
Harry Coates (R-District 28) and
Representative Tom Newell were
special guests of the SSC group.
Others in the delegation included Vice President for Fiscal
Affairs Katherine Benton, Director of Business Services Braden
Brown, Coordinator of Media Relations Dustie Butner, SSC Educational Foundation Trustees Doug
Humphrey, Paige Sheffield, Blake
Hargrove and past Foundation
Chair Karen James.
Joining the SSC supporters
were friends of the college from
the McAlester area – Wes Brown,
McAlester attorney, and Jim Pratt,
President of BancFirst.
Colleges participating in the
event included: East Central University, Eastern Oklahoma State
College, Carl Albert State College,
Connors State College, Murray
State College, Seminole State
College and Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
The event was part of a statewide initiative that brings together
local legislators, college and university presidents, and community leaders in a forum to discuss
higher education’s goals, initiatives and agenda for the upcoming
legislative session.
“Our message to legislators was
one of expressing thanks for their
past support, as well as explaining
our future needs. Seminole State
College plays a vital role in our
community and in the state system
of higher education, as do the other colleges and universities in this
area, and we need to make certain
that our students are an important
priority in the coming legislative
session,” Reynolds said.
