barrel workshop for the 2014 season
WARSAW—The Northern Neck Master
Gardeners conducted their last rain barrel
workshop for 2014 August 23 at the Menokin
Visitors’ Center near Warsaw.
The event was well attended, and the Master
Gardener helpers even had time to construct
some extra rain barrels to sell later, according
to spokesperson Edna Roberts.
After a brief presentation on the waterquality significance of rain barrels and how
to construct them, everyone adjourned to the
parking lot for the hands-on portion of the program. With a few simple tools, some materials
from the hardware store, and 50 gallon containers that had formerly been used to transport olives in bulk from Spain, each person
constructed their own rain barrel complete
with spigot, screened lid and two overflow
connections, said Roberts.
Although this was the last workshop for 2014,
ready-to-use rain barrels are still available for
purchase from the Northern Neck Master Gardeners at $60 each, as well as composters at $75
each, she said.

Community Services Board receives Crisis
Intervention Team Assessment Site grant
COOKS CORNER—The
Middle Peninsula Northern Neck Community Services Board (MPNN CSB)
recently received notification from the Department
of Behavioral Health and
Developmental
Services
(DBHDS) of a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Assessment Site funding grant.
The local Community Services Board was one of six
statewide to receive such a
grant. The Crisis Intervention Teams are programs
that bring together local
stakeholders,
including
law enforcement officers,
mental health treatment providers, consumers of mental
health services and other
first responders to improve
the process of intervening
with someone who is experiencing a behavioral health
crisis.
The award letter states the
local board’s proposal was
“the type of program that the
Department of Behavioral
Health and Developmental
Services wishes to see establish and expand across the
Commonwealth.”
Director of clinical services Joanne Brown, LPC,
described the award as being
extremely beneficial, especially for sheriff ’s departments and individuals experiencing a behavioral health
emergency.
“The funding makes it
possible to have a site where
an individual who is experiencing a behavioral health
emergency and is under an
emergency custody order
can be transported to the site
by a law enforcement officer who then will be able to
transfer custody to a CIT law
enforcement officer working
at the CIT site,” said Brown.
“The transporting officer
will then be able to return to
their community. We believe
that this will significantly
reduce the time that law
enforcement expends on
these particular situations,”
she added.
The CIT Assessment site
will be staffed by an emergency services counselor, a
peer support specialist, and
a CIT-trained law enforcement
officer.
Individuals transported to the site
will receive a prescreening
assessment and a determination will be made regarding
the course of intervention
and treatment.
Executive director Charles
R. “Chuck” Walsh Jr.,
LCSW, indicated this was
quite an accomplishment
for the CSB, since approximately 24 CSBs had an
opportunity to apply for
funding and only six awards
were made.
Walsh praised his staff,
especially those who worked
on the grant proposal, Jayme
Campagnola, Aja Ferguson
and Becky Sterling. Additionally, Walsh cited the support of the sheriff ’s departments and the Regional Correctional Facility staff and
all those who participated
in the CIT training as being
instrumental in bringing the
CIT funding to this area.
“We never would have
gotten funding without the
commitment and support of
our community partners,”
added Waslh.
The Assessment Center
is slated to be fully operational by September 1. On
average, the CSB provides
70 prescreening assessments
per month. The CIT model
was originally developed by
the Memphis Police Department, and has subsequently
spread throughout the country.
