To compound the issue, Staples on a national level has been looking to revamp its retail network, so this has led to the mall losing one of its anchors,” said Joseph Huza, executive director of the Chamber. With the departure of Bureau en Gros, Riocan will need some creativity to fill over 25,000 square feet of space, added Huza. “It seems Riocan will need to find creative solutions to counter its vacancies issue,” he said. KirKland Staples, the office-supply chain’s parent company, confirmed the forthcoming closure. “We continually evaluate our store performance to ensure we’re operating the business in the best way. As customers shift online, we are taking aggressive action to right-size our retail footprint,” company spokesperson Madalina Secareanu said in an email. Customers, she added, can shop at the Pointe Claire location, or online at Staples.ca. “We are committed to providing great service and every product businesses need whether it’s in-store, online or through mobile.” said Secareanu. The announcement comes about a year after two Bureau en Gros outlets were closed in Montreal. KirKland An office-supply giant is about to fall as the Bureau en Gros at Centre Riocan Kirkland will close on March 21, the Chronicle has learned. Though it remains unclear how many employees will lose their job, Secareanu said the company is “working to provide transfer options to employees where possible.” In 2013, Staples announced its intention to close 225 stores across North America – the equivalent of about 10 per cent of its total presence on the continent. To my standards, I couldn’t say they acted in good faith…I do blame many of the previous elected officials,” said the borough mayor. For his part, Brideau says the mayor was just looking for a way to show him the door. “Nothing was done behind closed doors. The travel expense claims were signed and sent to Montreal. The borough’s director general was aware, as were elected officials. I didn’t decide all this. The practice may not have been the best, but if it was malicious, I would have been out the door a long time ago,” said Brideau. Brideau is the third public servant to lose his post since Marinacci was elected in 2013. The end to Andre Brideau’s 12-year run as the borough’s public works director was announced via a notice sent to the department’s employees. Brideau, who had been suspended since Feb. 5, was notified of his dismissal via email. “We came to the conclusion that it would be very difficult to continue to work with Mr. Brideau in these circumstances. There has been a breach of confidence,” said Ile Bizard-Ste. Genevieve Mayor Normand Marinacci in an interview with TC Media, the Chronicle’s parent company. The borough paid roughly $15,640 in false travel expenses. In return for the use of their personal vehicle, public works reimbursed the foremen for travelling a fictitious amount of kilometres, deemed 39 km per day by the comptroller general, Alain Bond. At the time, Bond said he believed the department was acting in good faith, but didn’t execute the proper approach – suggesting the borough end this practice. So why was Brideau axed? “They acted in good faith – I don’t buy that conclusion. KirKland KirKland In November, the West Island suburb announced that it intended to reduce the current weekly household garbage collection on a bi-weekly basis, beginning May 13. “The City is adjusting to ensure a smooth transition for all citizens, in view of the specific realities of multi-unit residential buildings,” said Marie-Pier Paquette-Seguin, the city’s spokesperson. For now, the bi-monthly collection won’t apply to residential buildings containing nine or more units. “The goal is to maintain citizens’ active participation and to do so, we believe that a transition period is relevant and needed to ensure that the change is successfully carried out,” she added. The city also announced in November that it would begin picking up compostable materials once a week. Beginning April 7, the city’s green collections, currently held on Tuesdays, will become available to every Pointe Claire home. According to Paquette-Seguin, the city has received many inquiries regarding both household collections. “We have received many calls from citizens who wanted information on the compostable materials collection or a green rolling bin and a few complaints,” she said. Pointe Claire was the first West Island community to launch an organic waste collection in 2007. The collection of green and kitchen waste, in particular, has gone from 1, 228 tons in 2007 to 2,483 tons in 2013 – courtesy of an increased participation rate of over 50 per cent, Pointe Claire Mayor Morris Trudeau told the Chronicle in November. And then I tried this and I really like it,” said Hannah. “…It’s a great sport for many reasons, like great teamwork.” Neil, who has coached his daughters’ team for the last four years, unfortunately won’t be out on the rink next week as he wasn’t a certified coach at the time the Garguls won their Jeux de Quebec qualification games. It’s easy with Market-Linked Guaranteed Investments. One hundred percent of the capital in these investments is guaranteed, while their returns depend upon the yields delivered by stocks, bonds, currencies, merchandise and specialized products. Mardig Noubarian, B. Comm., Fin. Pl. Financial Planner and Mutual Fund Representative for Desjardins Financial Services Firm Telephone: 514 620-3000 Direct access: 514 620-3003 ext. 138 Fax: 514 620-6211 [email protected] Not happy with the yield on term deposits but don’t want to gamble your assets on the stock exchange? Market-Linked Guaranteed Investments were designed with you in mind. HOW DOES IT WORK? Let’s say you wish to invest $10,000. This amount will be divided into two portions. The first portion goes into term savings, with the amount calculated to equal your initial $10,000 on maturity. The other portion is exposed to the fluctuations of the stock, bonds or other markets. MANY ADVANTAGES • Diversification: not only can you vary when investments mature, you can also invest around the world in a variety of sectors. • Two categories: Desjardins offers a variety of products in two categories: fixed-income and growth. You choose! • Expertise: to grow your assets, Desjardins managers work closely with partners of world renown. • Accessibility: the minimum investment is just $500. Ideal for RRSP or TFSA contributions. Talk to your advisor or go to AccèsD!
