Oakland International Airport Environmental Initiatives Northern California Green Airport Fleet Partnership Workshop and Expo June 25, 2014 OAK’s Environmental Programs • Programs have been evolving • Regulatory Compliance (federal, state, regional, local) • Higher standard, ambitious goals • The Port is committed to its environmental programs and goals Airports Council International Environmental Goals at OAK AIR QUALITY, CLIMATE AND ENERGY BY OAK 50% GSE converted to Electric 2019 Ground Transportation Incentive Program 2010 Alternative Fuel Infrastructure 2019 Energy Conservation Program 2014 25% Loading Bridges with PCA 2019 Incentives for Low Emission Passenger Vehicles 2011 Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory 2015 2011 Water Conservation Program 2014 Spill Reduction and Training 2015 WASTE MANAGEMENT Airport Recycling Program WATER QUALITY Air Quality and Climate Programs • • • • • • Ground Support Equipment (GSE) Pre-conditioned Air (PCA) and 400 Hz Power Hydrant Fueling Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Station CNG AirBART buses 50% Alternative Fuel requirement for GT Air Quality and Climate - GSE • In 2007, airlines at OAK began converting GSE to electric power • Today 70% of GSE is electric • Reduces Greenhouse Gases Air Quality and Climate - GSE Southwest Airlines’ GSE and electric rechargers Air Quality and Climate - GSE United Airlines’ GSE and electric rechargers Air Quality and Climate – PCA / 400 Hz Power • PCA available at 70% of gates • 400 Hz Power available at 100% of gates • Reduces: • emissions • ramp noise • fuel consumption • maintenance costs Air Quality and Climate - Fuel • OAK installed hydrant fueling at South Field in 1983 BEFORE AFTER Air Quality and Climate – Alternative Fuel • OAK’s Alternative Fuel Program for Ground Transportation requires 50% of taxicabs, shuttles, vans and buses to use alternative fuels Air Quality and Climate – Alternative Fuel • Compressed natural gas (CNG) filling station opened on OAK’s North Field in 2002 • Station dispensed 355,245 GGE in 2012 • CNG vehicles emit less greenhouse gases Air Quality and Climate – Alternative Fuel • Grant funds from BAAQMD helped the Port buy 5 new CNG AirBART buses Air Quality and Climate – Alternative Fuel • OAK has equipped 19 customer parking stalls with new generation electric vehicle (EV) chargers. • EV chargers are also now available to employees.
