Texelstroom: CNG Battery Hybrid
INTERFERRY CONFERENCE -- OCTOBER 6 2015 -- COPENHAGEN Sustainable ferry project “Texelstroom” Cees de Waal – TESO, The Netherlands TESO: a short introduction Ferry service Texel- Den Helder, The Netherlands Founded in 1907 Local ownership by 3129 shareholders Non-profit organisation Texel Statutory objectives: quality, safety, affordability and sustainability TESO: a short introduction Texel: - attractive nature and beautiful scenery - tourism is main source of income on the island TESO feels responsible for preserving natural richness: all sustainable solutions for the new ferry were considered from an environmental as well as economic perspective Economics + Environment = decision to implement: CNG/Diesel-electric 1,6 Mw Lithium-ion batteries 700 m2 solar panels Heat recovery Low energy consumption ‘hotel load’ Auto-mooring Operating costs are an expense we need to tackle every day …….. and for years to come TEXELSTROOM - Battery pack - Reduce fuel consumption Reduce emissions Reduce maintenance costs (in 80% of circumstances 1 instead of 2 engines needed) Enough energy in batteries to sail to home port in case of failure engines TEXELSTROOM - Battery pack - every hour during 8 minutes use new auto-mooring-system in harbour Den Helder - this period dual fuel engine load level 90% to charge battery TEXELSTROOM - Going green with CNG , CNG is clean burning fossil fuel which overall, compared to marine diesel fueled systems of similar propulsion capacity, produce 20% less CO2, 90% less SOx, 80% less NOx and 100% less particulate matter (PM). No smell from exhaust. TEXELSTROOM - Going green with CNG , • • • • CNG is available by pipeline to our own filling station (no trucks/boats needed) Texelstroom takes CNG fuel on board during stay in homeport each night Capacity containers Texelstroom sufficient for sailing almost two days Dual fuel: CNG and ‘low Sulphur diesel’ Solar panels powering Texelstroom . TEXELSTROOM - “Hotel load” Reducing power consumption on board: • installing intelligent sensors for lighting • installing energy saving lamps (>2400) • come to a more efficient ventilation strategy • use of heat recovery TEXELSTROOM – more information These measures result in reducing total fuel costs. This has another benefit too: it’s a sustainable choice for the environment, TEXELSTROOM Thanks for your attention We like to welcome you to Texel
