President’s Message:
by Simon Cooper
B
y the time this column is published we will
have held multiple Driving Schools, Autocross Events and Car Handling Clinics. This
is of course a car club and so driving and driver
education is one of our cornerstones, it might even be two or three of
our cornerstones and something our volunteers and organizers are very
passionate about.
We will also have held our first Street Survival Event and 30 or so
teens will have hopefully been given the chance to see and feel what it is
like to skid and slide in their car! There, I said it. That’s part of what we
do in Street Survival and it is so very, very important for those young
adults to experience that feeling at low speed, in a safe environment with
a coach who can help them understand what just happened. This is where
we take this tactile experience and build skills to avoid incidents. This is
New England, it snows and cars slide. Young drivers need to know how
to handle these situations.
Unfortunately, snow is not the main culprit when it comes to accidents
on the road, it is distracted driving, plain and simple. This is a point we
discuss at length in the classroom for Street Survival, which I am preparing for right now. To emphasize this point I wanted to show a few
videos of the impact of distracted driving and I was staggered by how
many clips there are available. One I will be using is a bus driver (supposedly a professional) on a highway who looks away for seven seconds
(I counted) before hitting a parked truck. Another video had a montage
of young adults, crossing centerlines, driving into the back of stopped
vehicles and or running through stop signs — all with disastrous results.
The problem is that this terrible distracted driving behavior doesn’t
afflict just young drivers. If you look around you in traffic it is a plague
that affects all ages. Most adults would never drive drunk but texting and
using a cell phone is common place. A Transport Research Lab (TRL)
study showed that driving at a legally drunk level reduces the reaction
time of the driver by 12%-21% but texting and one handed cell phone
drivers had reaction times reduced by 35%-45%.
As I mentioned most adults will not drive drunk because of the awareness programs like MADD and the stiff penalties involved, but hopefully
it’s the very human aspect of not wanting to hurt others that helps them
make that decision. The basic fact is that impaired driving puts you and
others at risk and the study mentioned above shows that distracted driving essentially doubles the risk of injury and death to you, me and our
loved ones.
So, I would like to propose that if we know our friends and family
are driving that we don’t text them, wait until they get home or to their
destination. If it’s an emergency make a call and hopefully it’s a hands
free call. This example is something that our kids, family and friends will
see and hopefully emulate. Let’s not forget that texting is illegal in Massachusetts even if you are stopped in traffic.
Whoa, sorry for getting a bit preachy but honestly, texting can wait,
save a ticket, save a life, tell a friend and pass it on. ♦

Member Spotlight: Autocross program welcomes novice drivers
Story by Rachel Baker, Photo by Nigel Fenwick
S
o you’ve joined the Boston Chapter of the BMW
CCA, and you’ve been thinking about trying one
of the driving events ... but where do you start?
What do you need? Will you feel out of place? Your
Chapter has you covered for all of these in both their
Autocross and Driving School events. Both activities
have designated Novice Coaches/Mentors. First we’ll
discuss the Autocross Coach and the upcoming Evolution Autocross School being held jointly by the Boston
BMW CCA and the New England Region of the Sports
Car Club of America. In the next issue, we’ll talk to one
of the Driving School Novice Mentors.
First thing is signing up for an autocross event. The
Boston Chapter held their Novice School in April, but
don’t worry! At every one of our Season Points Events
we have a designated Novice Coach, who we’ll introduce later, and there are always plenty of instructors
available, and all the regulars willing to help you out.
You’ve arrived early to Moore Airfield in Ayer, MA,
signed the waiver at the gate, and parked your car.
What’s next? Tech inspection! You must remove every
loose item from your car (including floor mats), apply
your numbers (painters tape works quite well), and
bring your Snell SA/M2005 + helmet to the tech line
in the center of the paddock area. Once completed, the
event’s Chairs will call you for a driver’s meeting. Here
you will learn the basic rules of how to act, chase after
cones, and the run/work order. Everyone drives, and
everyone works. After the rousing meeting, you get to
walk the course. The Novice Coach will wait at the start
line to explain and show any novice who wishes to at-

tend the general read of the course — the “read” is the
preferable line to follow on the course and any tricky
spots to watch out for. This is a great way to get started
learning how to “read” the course. With the course walk
complete, it’s time to get down to some SRS BZNS driving! Check in for work, or get your car to the double
stacked grid area. Dual drivers (two people sharing the
same car) will park in the front. The Grid Workers will
help everyone get to the start line in a manageable fashion, and novices are requested to put their hazard lights
on to attract the attention of the Instructors. In the afternoon, if you’re feeling comfortable, you no longer are
required to take an instructor (FYI, even though I’m a
National Autocross Champion, I still take instructors!).
The day is comprised of a morning heat, lunch break,
and an afternoon heat — all making for a tiring and
rewarding day. Now that you know what to expect at a
typical autocross, we hope you’ll come out and attend!
Now onto the Novice Coach....
The Autocross Commitee is proud to welcome Mike
Banas as our 2015 Autocross Novice Coach. Mike has
been Autocrossing with the Boston Chapter for six seasons. Although, he has never owned a BMW he enjoys
the attitudes of the people in the club. Mike drives
both his Cobalt SS, and his two Corvettes. As a Sr.
Global Quality Engineer he has always enjoyed training younger engineers on the technical aspects of the

profession, and finds that this mind-set transfers well
into helping out novice Autocross drivers. His goal
in his new position is to help people new to the sport
in any way possible. Letting them know the basics of
looking ahead, hand and seat positions, and learning to
drive the correct line. He also works to make them feel
comfortable at a large event, where perhaps they don’t
know anyone. So please help us in welcoming Mike to
the Autocross Team, and if you are attending for the
first time seek him out!
To further enhance your skills
If you’re still looking for more help, as previously mentioned the Boston Chapter BMW CCA along with NER
SCCA will be hosting the Evolution Performance Driving School. This is an intensive school where National
Autocross Champion Drivers are brought in to instruct.
Evo offers 3 different types of schools: Phase 1, Phase
2, and Challenge. Phase 1 is spent all day on one short
course to help students learn how to read a course, find
the line, and develop car control skills. This is focused
on showing both your weak and strong points. Phase
2 is not only about driving fast, but also about mental
preparation, and course visualization. You must have
completed Phase 1 to take Phase 2.
Both Novices and experienced drivers will gain a lot
from Phases 1 and 2. Now, if you think you’ve got it all
mastered, then Challenge School might be for you! Have
you reached the point where you feel like you aren’t
making progress? One on one instruction will be given
on an actual autocross course. You receive instant feedback, and can even go head to head with your instructor
in your own car. Evolution School is a great opportunity
for all of our autocross drivers, and we hope that you try
out one or more of the Schools they offer!
So, even if you missed our novice school, don’t feel
like you can’t attend one of our normal season events.
We will always have plenty of people to show you the
ropes, and welcome you. All of our events have great
instructors to make you feel comfortable and to help
you hone your driving skills. We look forward to seeing
you on the runways! ♦

once again held at
Wagner BMW of Shrewsbury.
We were joined by Matt Russell, Corporate Public Relations for BMW NA, and John Stickley, the 4 Series
Brand Manager from Woodcliff Lake NJ. Also in attendance was a beautiful Yas Marina M4.
Special recognition for Wagner BMW
First order of business was to extend a token of our appreciation to Wagner BMW of Shrewsbury. Wagner has
been a friend of the Boston Chapter for many years. Not
only hosting Quarterly meetings, but also playing host
to our annual Concours d’Elegance for a several years.
The men and women that work at Wagner are all true

our appreciation for their ongoing support.
The meeting got underway with a short presentation from President Simon Cooper and some
words from John Sullivan, Regional VP. John

inside the dealership. What a glorious sound!
Lots of questions!
The floor was opened up to questions from members, and there were plenty! Topics included
speculation of a new M2, and comparisons to the
always popular 2002, as well as the common discussion on the merits of the BMW model naming
convention. There were many questions about
diesel engines, which shows a switch in consumer interest as the benefits of diesel are more

The season began on November 16 th, with the first of

Lydon quickly showed he would again be the man to
beat this year. He had the fastest time of the 23 club

conditions worsened throughout the morning, snow
began blowing onto the track through building vents,
making the racing surface treacherous to navigate at
the top of the City Course hill. Although we managed
to get ten heat races (this time five for each racer)
and even a consolation race in, the slick track conditions resulted in three extensively damaged karts and
forced cancellation of the final that day. Since Lydon

the single quick lap time for each used

Meeker’s 38.496 second lap edged Lydon’s 38.604 for top time, Lydon quickly

Team RLL wins at Long Beach & Leguna Seca!
by John Oglesby

A
fter a set of disappointing finishes at Daytona and
Sebring, Team RLL took 1-2 finishes at both Long
Beach and Leguna Seca. The races were very similar, but the order was swapped between the two events.
Both courses reward well handling cars, the Z4 GTLM’s
major strength. The ability for RLL to beat the Corvette
and Ferrari teams in such a convincing manner bodes
well for the rest of the 2015 season. It wasn’t ideal from
a driver’s championship, but certainly provides a lot of
inspiration for the team drivers.
Better news overseas
In Germany, the DTM season kicked off with BMW
once more the defending champion. BMW struggled a
little bit at the first race of the year at Hockenheimring
seemingly being a little bit behind the Audi and Mercedes teams in speed. They managed a best finish of 4th
over the two races and will have to find more speed if
they want to repeat as champions again this year.
In the BTCC, WSR has not been able to maintain their
performance with the M135 Sport like they had at the
opening race at Brands Hatch. They have managed a
couple of podiums over the last 6 races (they do 3 races
each weekend), but haven’t been pushing for a win.
Our ace driver, Andy Priaulx, is last among the three
WSR team mates having gotten caught up in several
pushing incidences in the early races. I’m hoping that
they get things sorted out soon as it is harder to deal
with them not leading when you can watch them on
TV this year.
If you enjoy close racing and superb road racing
events tune into the tape delayed broadcasts of the
BTCC on the CBS Sports Channel. The races appear on
Wednesday ten days after the race weekend. The coverage is compressed and not edited very well, but the
commentary is good and the racing is great!
Continuous improvement
Turner Motorsports is continuing to improve with their
ALMS GTD Z4 GT4 running very well at Leguna Seca
with a podium in sight before they got hit with a pit
lane speeding violation that ruined their race. They also
are continuing to move up the order in the Pirelli World
Challenge racing with a 2 nd at Barber Motorsports Park.
You can catch them on TV as well. Unfortunately, the
broadcasts seem to ignore that there are two classes
running in GT so it’s hard to understand how Turner
is doing in their GT-A class as the action focuses on the
expensive Lamborghinis, Bentleys, and other exotics;
and the running position lists ignore the class differences. There have been a lot of complaints and hopefully
they will do an upgrade of the scoring system in the
broadcasts.
Till next time – stay on track! ♦

he Autocross season is already in progress, but
there is still plenty of fun and excitement on the
runways in the months ahead and lots of opportunities for new and veteran drivers. We started the
season off with our signature Novice School. It was a
cold and blustery day. Fifty chilly students and their
dedicated instructors braved the frigid winds to learn
the skills required to navigate a sea of cones on the
best autocross site in New England.
New to Autocross?
If you are not familiar with Autocross it is a mid-speed
precision driving event. Drivers navigate a coned

course that requires precise braking
and acceleration points to complete
the course as quickly as possible without hitting any cones.
Lots of help along the way
If that sounds like fun, there are lots
of opportunities to try Autocross. We
welcome and encourage new drivers
to join us for one or all of our events.
Each Autocross event is staffed by
a team of talented instructors. Our
Novice Coach is available to help new
participants from the moment you arrive and throughout the day to assist
with everything from questions about
car setup, tire pressure and even your
work assignment. If for some reason
the Novice Coach is tied up when you
need help, every experienced driver
is willing to help with questions and
guidance. The coneheads (our affectionate name for Autocrossers) are as
passionate about their cars, and talking about their cars and yours, as they
are about Autocross.

What’s ahead for 2015?
This season we are once again hosting 8 points events,
a Test & Tune for advanced drivers, the Cross-Club
Competition and the Evolution Driving School (in conjunction with NER SCCA).
The 8 points events follow a standard format. Each
driver gets four runs in the morning and four runs in
the afternoon. You compete in Classes that are designed to match cars of similar weight, horsepower and
performance. Classes for non-BMWs follow standard
SCCA PAX rules. During the event you can check your
progress on your smartphone with our Live Timing.
After the event, final results are emailed to you and
posted on the Boston Chapter website. If you compete
in four points events you can qualify for a trophy at the
end of the season.
For the Cross-Club Competition we invite teams of
drivers from all clubs who run at Devens to compete
against each other. The team with the fastest overall
PAX’d time wins. Prizes are given for the top three
teams.
The Evolution Performance School, www.evoschool.
com, will be held July 11 and 12. Evo School is presented
in 3 phases from Novice to seasoned veterans by a team
of National Caliber instructors. For information on the
three phases of the Evo school see the Member Spotlight
article on pages 10-11 of this issue.
Don’t miss out!
The season is just starting, come on out to make new
friends and test your car’s capabilities and improve
your driving skills. ♦

Tech Session Update:
Paintless dent removal by DentTech
North Reading, MA
Story & photos by Sue Fenwick
S
omehow we managed to acquire a bevvy of dings
in our 2014 X1 – all from unknown sources – so
when the opportunity came up with the CCA to go
to a dent removal session at DentTech in North Reading we jumped at it. Matt Ligor was waiting for us with
coffee and donuts when we arrived and we brought our
car straight into his shop. Coffee and donut in hand we
watched as Matt started prepping the door panel on
one side – the first of four dents he would attempt to
make disappear.
The process was fascinating to watch and Matt was
very informative, explaining the process as he went. In
minutes Matt had erased the first dent! He quickly repeated the technique for the next two, slipping special
tools into the bodywork and manipulating the metal
panels to reform the lines of the car.
The last one was the toughest – a six inch crease in
the rear quarter panel where someone had opened a
door into the car with some force. The dent also went
across one of the panel creases. It took longer to tame
but eventually Matt had it beat. I’m amazed at how
well the panels were restored and the great value Matt
delivers. The large picture above shows Matt hard at work,
and the inset shows my newly UN-dented rear panel after

Tech Session Update:
Detailing & Clear Film at Protective Solutions
Holliston, MA
Story by John Sullivan, Photos by Eric Kaul
I
t was a clear sunny day at 275 Hopping
Brook Rd. in Holliston, MA. The folks at
Protective Solutions Chris & Dave DiMinico and Eric Kaul welcomed the participants
with a huge brunch buffet as they came into
the office — the caterer really provided a wonderful spread that everyone enjoyed. After a
welcome from Chris & Dave, we were shown
a new M4 Coupe courtesy of Wagner BMW of
Shrewsbury that James their lead detailer was
going use to explain and demonstrate selected
SONAX products.
Review of products & process
The detailing tech session covered the tools,
SONAX and selected products and techniques
required to do a professional exterior detail.
James walked us through the cleansing and protection
process using SONAX car care products.
He began with a scientific examination of the vehicle.
During this initial step he baselines the condition of the
vehicle’s paint using a digital microscope to determine
specific products and techniques to be used based on
the chosen vehicle’s paint condition. One of the products that he talked about was a surface decontaminate
called Gyeon iron remover. These contaminates were
found on the new M4 — can you imagine! He also talked about the latest and greatest products in the detail
arena such as a Microfiber Madness towel from Germany that everyone should have in their detail arsenal.
22 | Boston Bimmer • April / May 2015
An overview of films
James also talked about paint protection films focusing on the benefits of each type of film from Premium
Shield and where paint protective film is typically installed. After his presentation, James took questions
from the participants for about 45 minutes which was
followed by a drawing for a free Detail and for a Clear
Film application.
The winners were Lee Sullivan for the free detail session and John Sebastian for the Clear Film application
both to be completed at a later date. The Tech Session
broke up around 1 p.m., but socializing continued after
the event outside their facility. ♦
Tech Session Follow-up:
North Shore Motor Werks delivers good advice
Story by Pete Colantonio
I
brought my ’07 X3 3.0si with 108k miles on her,
which relieves my ‘11 M3 from driving duty during most of the winter (especially this year’s record
breaking snow season) to the Undercarriage Tech Session at North Shore Motor Werks. James Hart and his
staff were very friendly and knowledgeable and gave
me a thorough inspection of my vehicle.
Following up on my observations
I pointed out the power steering and a front differential
leak I observed months prior and mentioned that the
car has a bit of bump steer-like symptoms that were not
present before. They quickly identified that the front
control arm bushings were worn and need of replacement, which explains the issue. They pointed out one
of the rear shocks also was leaking, which explains the
slight ride and handling degradation I’ve noticed the
past several months.
... And then some
John the Tech who inspected my X3 also showed me
that all my front sunroof drain caps were clogged
with debris and advised to just keep them removed
instead of cleaning them frequently, which I agreed.
They also pointed out that one of the ground straps
was severely corroded and may cause starting issues. I
had mentioned the car strains to start frequently since
I purchased the car as a CPO in 2010, even though the
battery (replaced twice) and alternator are in perfect
working order. I was informed the starters on the
N51/N52 engines are a weak spot and ironically after
I tried to start the car minutes after the tech started my
car and drove it out of the shop, it wouldn’t start, not
even turn over. Fortunately, I was in the right place.
Fortunately I was in good hands
John made a quick jumper cable to see if my ground
strap was the culprit and unfortunately it wasn’t
— after making a couple attempts to start the car, including tapping on the starter to see if the solenoid
was seized. It all made no difference, so a new starter
is required to fix the issue.
I was very impressed with the level of information
and attention that was given to my vehicle and instantly became a new customer of North Shore Motor
Werks. I’m having the starter, along with a new ground
strap for good measure and front control arm bushings
installed the next business day.
Thanks North Shore Motor Werks for all your help! ♦

e met Rachael at the Cotton Patch Cafe in Henderson, TX. Young, attractive, and with a smile
that fills the cafe. She comes over to take our
order. The place isn’t busy and we chat. She makes no
mention of a husband, but does mention a child. “Do
you have a picture?” I ask. She beams and in a flash I’m
looking at Avery - two, maybe three. I ask if she likes
to read to Avery:
“Oh, yes! I have one book and he loves it.”
“One book?”
“Yes. One book.”
I return to the picture thinking about Rachael, her
life as a single mom, and the struggles ahead. But when
I look back up at Rachael that’s not what I see. Not
the weariness I expect. No foreboding. No dread of
the future in her eyes. Instead she’s beaming, as if she
hasn’t a care in the world.
I often think about Rachael, her infectious smile, and
how she greets life. No need to buy Thich Nhat Hanh’s
book on mindfulness - instead stop by the Cotton Patch
for a cup of coffee.

Things you learn along the road
My wife and I are traveling across country in our Z3
down the Skyline Drive in VA which stretches itself
into the Blue Ridge Parkway. For nearly 600 miles these
roads combine to take you up and over the mountain
peaks scattered throughout the Shenandoah Valley. We
see the Allegheny mountain range on our right. Then,
a few minutes later, we see the Appalachian Mountains
on our left. We travel for miles like this, swinging left
and right through the woods and then emerging for
breathtaking views of these two long mountain ranges.
What do we love? Everything.
It’s not just the parkways that we love. It’s everything.
When the road levels out to the Natchez Trace in Mississippi, we love that. And the long stretches of road
in Texas, we love that. And the dust storms in Arizona.
From the Grand Canyon to Death Valley and the Mohave Desert to Santa Ana, we love it all.
Along the way we discover all sorts of things, like
the little plastic bin in the Z3’s trunk is perfectly sized
to hold a quart of BMW synthetic. And a bottle of Chardonnay. Who knew?
We love an opera house on the edge of Death Valley, and May’s Cafe on Farm Road 2317 in Cornudas,
TX where the older woman who greets you is not May.
That’s May’s daughter. May is out back doing the cook-
ing. Both of them strong, rugged women - Garrison
Keillor women who do not suffer fools gladly. Two
other couples are having coffee at May’s that morning, and they laugh as we mention we are not from
around here. Not because our Z3 seems out of place,
but because no one is from Cornudas — there is nothing, nothing, on either side of May’s for miles.
It’s the things you remember
It’s funny the things that stay with you after a trip.
Well before May’s we stayed at a B&B in Banner Elk,
North Carolina. The confirmation email read:
“At the bottom of the driveway put your car in low gear
and come up the driveway quickly. DO NOT STOP.
Increase speed as the driveway turns to the left. Continue up, and at the top, turn sharply and park in front
of the safety barricade. It is important NOT TO STOP
on the incline!”
I figured the driveway wouldn’t be that big a deal —
until I saw it. It was unpaved and steep. Very steep.
I put my car in first, revved the engine, popped the
clutch, and we were off. Going up was scary. When I
hit the spot in the road where it turned sharply left I let
off the gas to look around the corner. Boy was that a
mistake. The incline on the other side was even steeper
and the Z3 started to stall. I stomped on the gas, the
engine caught, and up
we went. It wasn’t
picking up speed,
but it wasn’t slowing
down either - it was
just making it.
At the top we
stopped and sat there
for a bit just looking at
each other.
And going inside
the B&B didn’t exactly
Did you know that the little plastic
help calm our nerves:

the walls, were watching us, keeping vigil, I suppose,
for unwelcome guests. A wild boar, a moose, a bear,
an elk..., you get the idea. Neither my wife nor I hunt
big game and are not used to that sort of decor. I felt a
bit guilty looking up at them, which is silly of course,
but there you are.
In the morning we sat alone in the breakfast room.
Waiting. Our hosts appeared. Stood by our table.
Looked at us. Paused. And then said, “Can we lead
you in grace?” I didn’t know what to say. God was
thanked for various things and then our hosts silently
withdrew. Shortly after we also left.
Back home, and for different reasons, I often find
myself thinking of Rachael. And little Avery. And, of
course, Banner Elk. ♦
