The Villages’ Family of Services
Thirty-Five Years
of Enriching Lives ...
So Children Can Thrive!
The Villages is among the only two percent of child and family services agencies
that are fully accredited.

of Commitment
...
Dear Friend of Children,
The Villages rich, thirty-five year history has been defined by a “commitment of excellence” to
Indiana’s most vulnerable children, youth and families which is second to none! Long before other social
service colleagues were tracking program outcomes, The Villages was evaluating every service offered to
abused and neglected children, and then assessing how our organization might improve that service, even
more, to brighten the lives and futures of those we are privileged to serve.
In 1990, The Villages led the way as one of our state’s very first fully accredited nonprofit agencies;
and that commitment to exceeding state and federal program standards by being accredited is firmly
entrenched in our organizational culture. The Villages is among the only two percent of child and family
service agencies which is fully accredited by the prestigious Council on Accreditation.
However, the greatest “milestones” achieved during The Villages first thirty-five of tireless service
to vulnerable children, youth and families are the positive changes that have been made in the over 50,000
lives we have been privileged to touch and change!


First time, at risk parents have learned how to safely and lovingly care for their infants, thanks to our
dedicated Healthy Families staff!
Grandparents and relatives who are suddenly raising their grandchildren are supported as they “parent
again” through the Family Connection Network!
Teachers, coaches and parents have learned how to protect the young children they love from
bullying, child sexual abuse, and internet dangers, thanks to Prevent Child Abuse Indiana, a Division
of The Villages.
Fathers have developed stronger relationships with their children through The Villages’ Dads Inc.
Program.
Abused and neglected children in need of safe, loving foster care have been nurtured by The Villages
dedicated foster parents … who provide greater stability for the children in their care than any other
group of foster families in Indiana!
Older youth, aging out of foster care, have looked to The Villages’ Transitional Living Program, to
provide a strong and continual “bridge to adulthood”!
And children, in need of a new “forever family”, because their parents can no longer safely care for
them, have been placed, through The Villages Special Needs Adoption Program, with heroic adoptive
parents who have opened their hearts, their homes, and their lives to these special children and youth!
The impact that each of YOU has made, as a friend of The Villages, is invaluable! Why? Because
you have been a partner in helping The Villages’ staff, Board members, volunteers, foster families, kinship
caregivers and adoptive families …
CHERISH CHILDREN
AFFIRM FAMILIES
ENRICH LIVES … and
BRIGHTEN FUTURES!
Thank you for the greatest 35th “birthday gift”, ever!
Gratefully,

Thank You!
The Villages is Indiana’s largest private human service

in 1978 through an initiative of the Lilly Endowment,
now offering community-based support and services
from more than 20 service centers statewide.
Our Mission
The Villages champions every child’s right to a safe,
permanent and nurturing home. We are committed to
strengthening all families and embracing the dignity and

their children’s early years.
Family Services and Community Partners – We strengthen individuals, families and communities
through counseling, education, mentoring and support services.

Children’s Village Child Development and Education Centers – We provide quality, accredited
child care and early childhood development services for children six weeks to kindergarten age from
two locations in Indianapolis and Bloomington.
Prevent Child Abuse Indiana – This Division of The Villages offers training and community education to reduce family stress, improve family functioning and increase knowledge about parenting and

Kinship Care ...
CELEBRATION was the word of the day at The Villages’ Annual Family Connection
Network Kinship Care Retreat on Saturday, June 15th! In its eleventh year of connecting and
supporting heroic kinship caregivers, the Network
especially loves celebrating the accomplishments
of the children and youth it was designed to serve.
Miss Odessa’s adopted niece, DEIDRA,
graduated with honors and is headed to Indiana
University! Miss Martha’s grandson, CHAD, is
headed to Ball State. Miss Sandra’s adoptive
son JONATHAN just received a full scholarship to Providence Cristo Rey High School and
threw out the first pitch at The Villages’ Family Night at Victory Field! DEMARCUS asked to
go to Summer School so he can excel in school next Fall; and his loving grandmother, Miss Rijenna
is thrilled! The average age, collectively, of these dedicated caregivers … 80 years young!
Healthy Families ...
“Maria” came to Indianapolis from Mexico with her little girls because of the promise from a relative
of a work permit and safe housing. Unfortunately, neither of those promises became a reality.
Thanks to The Villages’ Healthy Families
MOM Project was able to serve this
struggling, frightened Mom who was
undocumented. Maria quickly found herself
in an abusive domestic violence relationship.
Through her bi-lingual Family Support
Worker, Maria found the strength to call the
police, free herself and her children from the
trauma of domestic violence, and is currently
in the process of getting a Visa. Maria, with extensive support from the MOM Project, has found
safe housing, is working in a local factory, and was able to get a child care voucher so her beautiful
daughters can flourish in a nurturing child care setting!

Adoption ...
Margot is the “MOM” who just couldn’t say no! She had already raised two children of her own
and was not in the best of health. Margo was struggling to get by on disability … but when her best
friend was murdered by her own husband, Margo stepped in to raise their two daughters, Megan
and Aimilee, as well. Margot was able to find the support the new family needed through her
Villages’ Foster Care Case Manager, Sarah. Sarah connected Margot with the appropriate
resources, and was always available to reassure and affirm Margot as she was raising her “new”
daughters.
Three years have passed, and thanks to the support and
guidance Margot received from The Villages, both girls
are secure and happy. Megan, has graduated 1st in her
class, has had an internship at Eli Lilly and received a full
scholarship to Taylor University, where she is excelling.
On Megan’s eighteenth birthday, both girls got a special
surprise. Their mother had always wanted to, someday,
take her daughters to Florida to swim with the dolphins.
Margot knew this story well, and was determined to make it happen. Though funds were limited, especially raising two children on disability, she managed to save up and, although they didn’t go to
Florida, they did visit the Indianapolis Zoo … and they went swimming with the dolphins!
Aimilee is still at home, working hard at completing her high school education, and looking forward to
following in her sister’s footsteps and attending college someday. But the best news is, they are
about to finalize her adoption by Margot … making her, forever, a permanent member of Margot’s
family!
Thank You for Being Our
DID YOU KNOW …
The Congressional Coalition of Adoption Institute (CCAI) has recognized The Villages’
dedication to adoption and commitment to demonstrating positive child welfare practices on
a national scale … not once, but twice! The Villages was honored to receive the “Angels In
Adoption” Award in 2007, and again in 2009.

Foster Care …
Baby Isabella was born with a condition called
Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome; meaning the left side
of her heart did not form properly. Isabella was also born
with illegal drugs in her system and had to be weaned off of
them. She was the third biological child born to parents with
substance abuse issues. Neither parent was visiting Isabella
regularly during this critical time ... the first three months of
her life … while she was hospitalized at Riley Children’s
Hospital, so she was placed in foster care. One of The Villages’ heroic foster families, the
Crouch ’s, assumed the fulltime care and responsibility for Isabella, taking her into their home while
she was still on an oxygen tube and G and J tubes. They learned how to take care of her round
the clock medical needs and made sure she got the procedures she needed. Her progress has been
remarkable. She is now walking, talking and able to eat on her own. She is catching up to her
developmental milestones. While there are still some obstacles in her future, she has truly defied the
odds. This family's love and unconditional support have truly made the difference. After almost
two years in foster care, Isabella is officially adopted and has her new “forever family”! Born with
only half a heart, this little one has certainly captured the heart of everyone around and she has
persevered!
Transitional Living Educational Success ...
Ericka was one of the nearly 700 youth who age out of Indiana’s
foster system each year … and is one of the many Villages’ youth
who are constantly “charging our batteries” because she is so
determined and resilient! In February of last year, Ericka was a
still a full time college student and working towards entry into the
prestigious Indiana University Kelly School of Business. Since
that time, she has worked her way through numerous challenges to
obtain her degree from IUPUI. She set the “perseverance bar”
very high as she juggled supporting her developmentally disabled
brother; driving a bus, first for Indiana Public Schools and later for
IndyGo; participated in weekly “coaching” sessions funded through
some very generous Board Members and volunteers of The
Villages; and taking a full load of classes! Ericka recently graduated with a dual degree in Business Management and Human Resource Management, with a minor
concentration in Economics from IU’s Kelley School of Business. The results? She has just
accepted a full-time position in the Human Resources Department at a prestigious local company.
Dads Inc.
The mission of Dads Inc. is to provide support and education for fathers in order to develop
healthy relationships and positive involvement in the lives of their children.
Christopher Maples, Founder and the first
President & CEO of Dads, Inc., passed away
in June, 2014 at
the age of 37 after
a very short, but
courageous, battle
with cancer.
Chris believed that
it is a man’s responsibility … his duty … to be
the best dad possible for his children, and he
founded Dads Inc. to help assure that every
father has the resources and support to be
that “best dad”. We are proud that Chris
chose The Villages to help carry out that
mission, and honored to be a small part of
the Chris Maples legacy of “building generations of strong dads for thriving children”!
The founding and guiding principle behind Dads
Inc. is to work with fathers from any and all backgrounds, engaging fathers and their children from
all walks of life. While a majority of the participating fathers are married and living with their children,
many are single or divorced, either with sole or joint
custody of the children. A large part of the
fathers come from the middle income bracket, while
many are at or below the poverty level .
Approximately 45% are Caucasian, 45% are
African-American, 8% are Asian-American, and
2% are Hispanic. Many of the fathers are either
the primary wage-earner or part of a two-earner
structure, some are also Stay-At-Home Dads, a
rapidly increasing demographic in Indiana and
nationwide.
The overwhelming majority of the fathers are between the ages of
20-40, with children 12 and under. In the unfortunate circumstance
where a father or step-father is not present, uncles, grandfathers,
cousins and other friends and family members (including mothers) are
invited and encouraged to participate with the children. 592 fathers
have a stronger relationship with their child because of their
involvement in the Dads Inc. Program during 2013.
In addition to the educational components of
Dads Inc., activity-based programs and events
focused on strengthening the father and child
relationship are offered annually. One of the
most popular Dads Inc. events, the Fairytale
Ball, is held each October.

Prevent Child Abuse Indiana ...
Prevent Child Abuse Indiana is dedicated to preventing child abuse and neglect,
and is committed to making Indiana a better, safer place for Indiana's most precious resource - our children. PCAI is Indiana’s only statewide entity dedicated
to being the voice in Indiana for preventing child abuse in all its forms. With strong
support of active councils throughout the state, we work together to:
Raise Public Awareness - Providing newsletters, website, social media outlets, community fairs
and exhibits, and strong media relations reaching all 92 counties;
Gather and Disseminate Information and Resources – Creating and distributing ageappropriate, printed materials to over 250,000 individuals annually; offering a website with
extensive links to other professional resources and printable resource materials;
Provide Education – Presenting Breaking The Cycle Conferences for over 200 parents and
professionals; educational institutes, retreats and workshops; and the Prevention
Education Series focusing on Indicators of Child Abuse, Zero to Three, childhood
sexual abuse prevention and four curricula for Preventing Shaken Infant Syndrome.
Annually, over 4000 youth, parents and professionals view these educational programs;
Build Community Capacity - Developing new and assisting existing child abuse prevention
Councils, providing leadership for Children’s Coalition of Indiana and Healthy Families
Indiana, and, serving on numerous community boards, statewide commissions, and task
forces. In addition, we also serve as an advocate for policies and practices that are in the
child’s best interest.
1- 800 - Children - Serving as an Information & Referral line, as well as a “warm” line for
individuals who may call from around the state and need assistance or support in areas
relating to nurturing, providing for and parenting children. PCAI staff provides ongoing
training and updated information for the Connect2Help staff who answer this line
BRIGHTER “FOREVER FUTURES”
TRIBUTE TO DR. JOHN PLESS
Nationally recognized forensic pathologist Dr. John Pless was an exemplary volunteer longer than
the span of his medical career. His accomplishments included public service activities that stand out
because his dedication to them was given from his heart.
In 1962, Dr. Pless saw his first case of child abuse, one of hundreds he would encounter during his
career. He presented lectures on the topic of child abuse for more than 30 years and served on the
Indiana Child Fatality Task Force, contributing his knowledge and experience to developing strategies
to prevent abuse. Dr. Pless’ concern for maltreated children resulted in a lifelong commitment to the
treatment and prevention of child abuse.
In the late 1970s, Dr. Pless was drawn to the
mission of The Villages, a new child and family
services organization in Indiana founded on the
principles of Dr. Karl Menninger. When the
opportunity arose, Dr. Pless and his wife, Lois,
donated a parcel of land he owned in Bedford to
The Villages of Indiana. His land gift, used to build
a family model group home for abused and
neglected children, was to become only the
beginning of Dr. Pless’ longstanding commitment
to The Villages’ mission. In 1978, Dr. Pless became a founding member of The Villages’ Board. He
assumed the chairmanship in 1979, a role he fulfilled for 13 years. Dr. Pless remained an active and
involved supporter of The Villages’ mission and vision until his death in early 2014.
During his leadership of The Villages’ Board, this fledgling organization grew from its humble roots with
two group homes in Bedford into the third largest child caring agency in the State of Indiana. Now the
largest such agency in the State, The Villages has expanded its scope to care for vulnerable children
through an array of services including foster care, adoption and independent living. Dr. Pless volunteered his services to the agency for many years as its designated physician and helped youth served
by the agency around Indiana access physicians and other needed medical services.
Although he retired from his medical career late in the summer of 2003, Dr. Pless continued his volunteer service to The Villages and countless other organizations. In 2003, when The Villages celebrated
its 25th anniversary, and again in 2013 during The Villages’ 35th Anniversary year, Dr. Pless hosted a
reception to honor community partners, staff members and foster parents who have worked alongside
The Villages to better serve children impacted by abuse and neglect.
Dr. Pless and his wife, Lois, established The Villages’ Pless Family Society in 2000 for those willing to
pledge a gift of $10,000 or more to The Villages’ Endowment.
We are deeply indebted to Dr. Pless for his many years of volunteer service and his passion for improving the lives of children recovering from abuse and neglect. Dr. Pless, through his leadership, philanthropy and hands-on work on behalf of vulnerable children at The Villages, has been an enduring
example of the positive difference that individuals can make in the life of a child … one child at a time.
