The auction sales held during 2010 were something of a mixed bag. We are reporting
on 28 Auction sales of Brahman cattle this year compared to 29 in 2009.
Registered bull numbers increased by 5.8% to 1790 however herd bull numbers declined
significantly by 36.5% or 579 bulls to 1009.
The numbers were impacted mostly by less bull’s catalogued and one less sale and also
to some extent by clearance at some sales.
The result was total bulls sold at auction declined by 482 or 14.7% to 2799.
It is pleasing to report that the average price for registered bulls increased by $161 or 3%
on the previous year to $5401.
The herd bull average however declined by $676 or 25% to $2688.

The average price for the 2799 bulls sold at auction increased by $91 or 2.1% on last year
to $4423.
The impact of the reduction in herd bull numbers and average price was that gross
proceeds from bulls sold at auction sales declined by $1,834,300 however still recording
a healthy total of $12,379,200.
The top price of $45,000 which was also the top price for any breed for the year was
$15,000 down on last year.
Female numbers sold at auction sales increased by 143 or 22.5% to 778.
The average price however declined by$381 or 11.5% to $2946 and the top price of $20,000
was down $6,000 on last year.
While our market is still healthy and supported by strong paddock sales, we will need to
ensure the bulls we sell are producing the genetic solutions for our customers, which I
suspect will increasingly depend on reproduction as well as growth and carcase traits.

President’s paragraph
On the recent Trade Delegation to
the World Brahman Congress in
Brazil, I was amazed at the rise in
popularity of the Brahman since my
last visit in 2005.
Introduced in Brazil only sixteen years ago,
the Brahman is gaining momentum as a
Zebu with characteristics very similar to
European cattle. Since their introduction
the cattle ranchers have identified in the
Brahman breed, the appropriate potential
for crossings and are now celebrating its
performance.
Used over the Nelore female herd, the
Brahmans are improving carcase yield,
finishing abilit y and meat qualit y.
Programmes are under way to use
molecular markers to improve the
accurac y of selec tion and genetic
improvement for the characteristics of
commercial importance.
Between 1994 and 2010 in excess of 160,000
Brahman animals were registered by ABCZ
and there are now more than 1.5 million
animals from crossings of the Brahman in
commercial herds. In sixteen years Brazil
has climbed to the position as home to the
third biggest Brahman herd in the world,
co min g o nl y a f ter Co l o mb ia an d
Australia.
Following the Congress we visited a
number of leading Brahman studs and
2 December 2010
were fortunate to travel north west to the
state of Mato Grosso, which joins Bolivia,
where we visited two ranches in the
beautiful Guapore Valley. The first ranch
owned by Ovidio Brito is one of the largest
herds of registered Nelore cattle, the
greatest number of polled breeders and
one of the major Brahman breeders. Their
bull selling season runs from May until
November. Prices average US$4000 - $5000,
involving some 2000 bulls. All bulls are
performance recorded and transported
free anywhere inside Brazil.
Another hours flight by light aircraft to the
IMA Group ranch of 26,000 ha. and running
1,000 Brahman and 5,000 Nelore breeders.
Again all cattle are performance recorded
and this is showing in their fertility, with
their females AI’d with sexed semen and
only a handful of bulls needed to mop up.
The IMA Group also sells approximately
2,000 bulls at fourteen sales a year. The bulls
are transported to the city of Cuiaba to the
IMA feedlot and IVF centre, where they have
a grain preparation of 60 days.
The three items that make Brazil the
powerhouse it is for farming 190million
head of cattle are:
•
rich soil
•
improved pasture of Brachiaria grasses
from South Africa
•
guaranteed rainfall
The Brazilians are aware of the success
Brahman cattle have had in Australia and
they recognise the similarity in the
production environment, being mainly a
grass based industry. There is certainly
interest in Australian Brahman genetics,
particularly with a number of generations
of Australian breeding and Breedplan
figures.
As this will be my last President’s paragraph
I’ll take the opportunity to thank members
for their support over the past three years
and wish you all a Merry Christmas and a
prosperous year ahead.

Positive result at Brahman Week Sale
- $42,500 top and average up by $947/head
by Lindel GREGGERY
A $4.88 million result, a 92 percent
clearance rate and a sale average up
by almost $1000 a head on the
previous year has cemented the 2010
Rockhampton Brahman Week Sale’s
place in history.
The October 4-6 mega auction sold 819
bulls for $5964 average, to gross $4,884,750
and peak at $42,500. The overall average
was up by $947/head on last year’s sale,
although 121 fewer bulls were sold.
In 2010 it was the 359 reds that averaged
best, at $6327, while the 460 greys also fared
well, finishing up with an average price of
$5681.
The line-up at the CQLX at Gracemere
featured 55 Select Sires which sold for an
average of $6109. Again, reds were met with
the most demand, peaking at $19,000 and
averaging $6929, while the 27 grey Select
Sires topped at $13,000 to average $5259.
As usual, the sale balanced elite genetics
with affordability, said Australian Brahman
Breeders Association general manager John
Croaker.
“While the top 102 bulls made $10,000 or
better, 56 percent of the yarding sold from
$2500 to $4500, meaning there was
something for everyone at Brahman Week,”
Mr Croaker said.
Attracting the top price of $42,500 was
23-month-old Carinya M Malachi, a son of
Carinya M Leredo (by JDH Databank Manso),
and the first calf from the JDH MacQuarie

Manso (imp) cow Carinya M Yugo. Offered
by Matthew Kirk, Carinya M, Mundubbera,
Malachi weighed in at 850kg with a 136 sq
cm eye muscle area (EMA), rib fat of 10mm,
P8 fat of 13mm and intramuscular fat (IMF)
measurement of 4.3 percent. The sale topper
helped set up a $12,333 average for six bulls
from the Carinya M prefix.
Buyer Rodger Jefferis, Elrose, Cloncurry said
the Carinya M Malachi was the complete
package, combining a sire outlook with
ver y good carcase at tributes, high
intramuscular fat and excellent fat cover.
OVER $30,000
While the top priced grey sold on day one,
the highest red price came late on the final
day when 33-month-old Warraka Brandon
was knocked down for $37,500. Offered by
Bill and Sue Blakeney, Warraka, Coondoo,

CQ “legend” receives ABBA Life
Membership
by Lindel GREGGERY
“A dead set Aussie legend” would be
one way of describing 73-year-old
Central Queensland beef producer
Charlie Lund, who was recently
honoured with Life Membership of
the Australian Brahman Breeders
Association.
A self made multi-millionaire who started
work at age 15 and a half and has never
answered to a boss, Charlie has continued
to expand his empire despite a helicopter
crash in 2001 where he sustained debilitating
spinal injuries.
Charlie said the Brahman breed had been
a major contributor to his success.
“The breed means a lot to me and has been
good to me, and it hasn’t been well treated
overall or got the recognition it deserved,”
he said.
Charlie grew up on a farm at Millman, near
Rockhampton, and developed and sold “a
couple of blocks” which enabled him to
move to Moura where he started garage,
fuel distribution and trucking businesses.
“I went to Moura because I reckoned it was
good country,” he said.
“I built my assets in a medium I knew well
and understood, then started investing in
agriculture.”
Today his Laglan Pastoral Co, which includes
Belyando Shire blocks Laglan and Yarmina,
north-west of Clermont, and 3645 hectare
Montagna, west of Rockhampton, runs up
to 25,000 cattle and incorporates Rathlyn
Brahman stud, founded in 1974. Other
proper ties that have been bought,
developed and sold over the years, include
Thalmera at Moura, Gulf breeder block
Mittagong, near Croydon, and Tobermoray,
on the Qld/NT border near Urandangi.
Charlie also buys 10,000-20,000 store cattle
a year, destined for 110-130 days on grain.
His buying support underpins the weekly
Gracemere store sales, and he also sources
cattle privately in the paddock and online.
“We have 5000 or 6000 on feed all the time,
sometimes up to 8000, it just depends if
you can buy the cattle,” he said.
14 December 2010
“We’d feed 10,000, 15,000 up to 30,000 a
year but we don’t make big profits on them.
We’ll make $50 a head on bullocks and $30
on trade cattle, but we make money purely
by volume,” he said.
The pastoral company runs three prime
movers which tow two 6.1m B-Doubles
hitched together, a configuration which it
pioneered and helped get Qld Department
of Transport approval for.
Another labour of love, driven by a deep
desire to prove that Brahmans are good
eating beef, has been the development of
the Laglan Premium Beef Brand which retails
grainfed beef and gourmet pies throughout
Central Queensland. Charlie said retailing
beef was not easy, in fact it was “the hardest
job in the world” due to fierce price
competition and discounting from larger
operators.
Following his accident Charlie and wife
Grace moved to Gracemere, but his only
concession to cutting back on work has
been the handing over of the management
of Rathlyn stud to his daughter and sonin-law Joy and Peter Newman. Peter also
assists with the bookwork for the pastoral
company.
“They will probably do a better job with
the stud than I did, because they can be
more hands on,” Charlie said.
As well as his beef interests, Charlie is
involved in philanthropic activities through
his church, raising money for worthy causes
such as the construction of Shalom Village,
a residential aged care facility in North
Rockhampton, and for overseas aid projects.
He is also passionate about driver safety
and instigated and taught a defensive
driving program for Year 10 students,
His friend of 50 years, Maurice Binstead, 88,
said Charlie was an astute businessman
who was making a significant contribution
to the community.
“He had sufficient nous to buy good
properties at the right time and for very
little money,” Maurice said.
“Charlie always had a bit of machinery and
he cleared country, sowed it and turned a
pretty ordinary timbered block into very
good quality pasture. He’s done a good job
with his land and he’s a good citizen.”

Membership plaque from John Atkinson, ABBA

Former neighbour Ron Banisch, who leases
Montagna and has known Charlie for 30
y ea r s , s a i d C h a r l i e h a d a m a z i n g
determination.
“He’s enormously committed and he’s got
an almost inhuman drive about him,” Ron
said.
“Anyone else who’d had a helicopter crash
would be feeling sorry for themselves, but
not Charlie. He’s running a huge enterprise
and if he gets bored he just finds another
project.
“He’s a proper character, he’s larger than
life – there’s only one Charlie.”
Charlie said the secrets to his success were
lots of hard work, good family backup,
“faithful and loyal” employees and mixing
with successful, visionary people.
“If you are breeding bulls, go to the most
successful cattleman you can find and talk
to him and find out what he wants. Mix
with the big people. The secret of success
is to breed the animal that the people
require, not breed the bulls and then tell
the buyer what you will give them.”
Charlie said he clearly remembered advice
f rom indus tr y leaders that, when
implemented, had made a major impact
on his herd.

CQ “legend” receives ABBA Life Membership

“I’ll never forget that John Keir from AMH
said that ‘you find the breed of cattle that
will survive the best in your country, then
you breed the best of the best’.”
“And Graham McCamley told me, 40 or 50
years ago when we were driving around
his stud paddocks, that if the bull doesn’t
stay fatter than the cows (during mating
season) then you should dump him because
he is bringing your constitution down. I
followed that advice and I’ve cut the heads
off $80,000 bulls if they didn’t maintain their
condition.”
Charlie said some of his most rewarding
moments in the beef industry were winning
the Paddock to Plate competition in Brisbane
for two consecutive years in the 1990s.
“We entered our ordinary run of the mill
commercial cattle, bred from our commercial
females, and the others entered their
specially bred Herefords and Shorthorns,
so that made our win even more
significant.”
Laglan Pastoral Co’s Brahmans have also
excelled at a number of commercial
competitions. It was the most successful
exhibitor at the inaugural CQ Carcase Classic
in 2008, showing the champion pen and
numerous class wins, and has notched many
awards at the annual Brahman Country
National Livestock Championships at
Charters Towers.
“I openly challenge other cattle breeds to
live up to the quality of the cattle we breed,”
Charlie said.
“In the feedlot Brahmans will produce more
meat than any other breed and that’s what
I worked out early in the piece. We’ve had
steers, less than 20 months, that have been
360 to 380 kilos going over the hooks off
the feedlot chain.
“The tick resistance of Brahmans is also a
very, very big thing and if we didn’t have
that we couldn’t stay in the industry because
of the cost of chemicals and dipping.”
RBWS semen auction makes a
difference
Thirteen studs graciously donated
semen for the annual Rockhampton
Brahman Week Semen Auction at
CQLX Gracemere on October 3.
Ralph and Larraine Batlem, Broadsound
Brahmans, Yeppoon, invested in the
Lancefield D Robinson semen and the
Magnate semen sold to Sally North, NBS
stud, Gympie.
The auction raised $15,500 for The Jeff
McCamley Memorial Youth Development
Fund, Mater Children’s Hospital and the
Queensland Cancer Fund.
The Radels paid $1300 for semen from VL
Rojo Grande 26/8 (imp), donated by the
Tompson family’s Crystal Vale stud,

Warraka reds claim best RBWS
average
With 975 bulls catalogued at the 2010
Rockhampton Brahman Week Sale,
there was fierce competition between
the 212 vendor studs to achieve the
best sale average.
Who finishes on top after three frenetic
days of selling is anybody’s guess, as who
can predict which bull will reach the
pinnacle and which draft will have the
greatest appeal to the hundreds of buyers
drawn from throughout Queensland and
into the Northern Territory, Western Australia
and New South Wales.
Finishing top of the ladder, without selling
the highest priced bull, is a major
achievement and that’s exactly what
happened in 2010 for vendors Bill and Sue
Blakeney, Warraka stud, Coondoo. While
falling $5000 short of the $42,500 top price,
Warraka did market the top selling red and
second highest price, $37,500 Warraka
Brandon, giving them the best average of
$13,900 for five bulls.
The Top 10 averages are calculated on
individual stud prefixes and individual
vendors (not combining family totals) and
only studs with sales of three or more bulls
are included.
Just missing out on the Top 10 were Bevan
and Elizabeth Radel’s Kandoona stud, which
averaged $10,250 for 20 reds, and Geoff
and Scott Angel’s Glengarry stud, which
averaged $9167 for 16 greys.

Vibrant school teacher
made a difference
Vale: Helen Harch
Former schoolteacher Helen Harch
will be sadly missed following her
passing on September 4, just weeks
short of her 71st birthday.
schools, including a fulfilling role as a relief
teacher at Cherbourg State School.
Helen took an active role in Danarla Brahman
stud at Wondai, started by her son David
in 1986.
At age 20, Helen met her husband Chas
Harch at a ball and the couple married two
years later, on April 28, 1962, in Ipswich.
They first made their home at her father’s
property Homeview, Crossdale, before
moving to Chas’ parent’s property at
Murrumba, which they later purchased.
When the property was resumed for the
Wivenhoe Dam they bought a farm at
Toogoolawah and a paddock at Mt Beppo,
growing potatoes and Lucerne and raising
Brahman and Brahman cross cattle.
David said his mother was a very social, fun
loving, outgoing person who enjoyed
attending cattle sales and contributing to
decisions regarding the stud.
“She was fondly known by her family as
‘Socksie’ because every vehicle leaving had
mum in it,” David said.
Helen was born at Ipswich on September
18, 1939, the daughter of Thomas and Sybil
O’Brien and the eldest of five children. Her
independent spirit was forged early on,
with Helen leaving home at age five to
board at Esk Catholic Convent. She later
attended St Mary’s Catholic School in
Ipswich where she discovered a fondness
and talent for playing piano.
Fulfilling her vocation to become a primary
school teacher, Helen taught at a number
of Brisbane Valley and South Burnett district
24 December 2010
“She loved her teaching and was very
passionate about it,” David said.
As well as raising three children at
Toogoolawah – David, Susan and Carla –
Helen was busy relief teaching, being a
member of the Lioness club, playing the
organ and piano at various functions and
volunteering for the Catholic Church.
In 1991 the family moved to Wondai, where
Helen became an active member of the
community and continued to relief teach
at a number of local schools.
“Mum loved going to the cattle and bull
sales, mainly for the social side of things,
and her and dad helped me set up the stud
in 1986,” David said.
“She’s always been involved in the decision
making and we always worked well as a
family together.”
Helen was blessed with seven grandchildren
and enjoyed following their achievements.
A special pleasure was going to gymkhanas
and campdrafts to watch Amy and Matthew
compete on their home-bred Australian
Stock Horses.
“She also used to enjoy her trips up to Sarina
to visit my sisters and their families.”
Helen will be remembered as a true Christian
who always saw the good in people and
was always willing to offer a helping hand
or some helpful advice.
“Mum got pleasure out of the small things
in life. Having a cuppa with someone meant
so much more to her than any material
things ever could,” David said.

McCamley Brahmans impress buyers
A high quality offering of grey and

requirements of current industry
directions, appealed strongly to the
market at October’s Tartrus Lancefield
Brahman Sale at Gracemere, with
buyers taking prices to season year
levels for the Brahman breed.
The power of the beef performance and
carcase quality of the offering can be
gauged from the pre-sale weights and
measures attributed to the sale group. The
sale’s male offering in total recorded an
average age of just 24 months at sale time.
The average weight of the bull offering was
774kg, with carcase scans revealing an
average eye muscle area of in excess of 127
sq cm. Milk tooth bulls in the offering scaled
up to a peak of 920kg and recorded EMA
measurements of 140, 139, 137 sq cm, etc.
“The animals are not extreme, their fat scans
were excellent and certainly not indicating
any presence of overfeeding, so it is little
wonder that many of the Australian beef
industry’s leading producers were present
at the sale to secure high quality Brahman
seedstock backed by this type of leading
edge beef performance,” sale co-ordinator
Ken McCaffrey of McCaffrey’s Australian
Livestock Marketing said.

obvious combination of sire and natural
beef qualities enticing many studmasters
to join the bidding on these imposing
prospects. 13 Echo sons sold at the sale

sons of Lancefield Buster Manso in the sale
which proved popular with buyers,

buying contingent at the sale. They
purchased a grey and a red sire, their top
buy at $14,000 was Lancefield A Erroll Manso,
907kg at 2 year old and the second heaviest
milk tooth bull of the sale. Pluto Pastoral
Company, Proserpine also outlaid $14,000
on a grey sire, Lancefield S Mr Edgar Manso.
Another high quality son of JDH Mr Echo
Manso, this youngster shows impressive
potential with his combination of breed
style and natural beef performance.
Central Burnett Brahman breeder Ian
Gitsham of Eidsvold identified the sale as
the place to invest in well bred, grey sire
prospects. He purchased two Echo sons of
attractive beef and breed credentials from
Lancefield for $16,000 and $15,000.

Long trip worth it for Brahman
breeder
by Caitlyn WEST WA Farm Weekly
Transporting the only three Brahman
bulls entered in the 2010 Smoke Free
Perth Royal Show all the way from
Cue was Kindillin co-stud principal
Christie Blackmore.
Wanting to represent the Brahman breed
and what they are capable of, Ms Blackmore
made the two day journey with the three
sires for the first time this year.
“I definitely want to be bringing more down
in the future, I want it to be a regular trip
and am hoping to enter a bigger team next
year,” Ms Blackmore said.
“I think it’s a great opportunity to show just
what the Brahmans can do.”
The team had been pitted against each
other in the Brahman bull born between
January 1, 2009, and December 31, 2009,
category with the first place ribbon was
placed around the neck of Kindillin
Raindance 9290K.
Sired by Canterbury Jimmy and out of
Kindillin Jessie, the heaviest bull in the
catalogue attracted Queensland judge Glen
Waldron’s attention, describing him as the
complete package with very early maturity
and good scrotal development. Canterbury
Pannican 9581 was placed second while

Kindillin Raindance was the complete package according to Queensland judge Glen Waldron, (left), who was
with Kindillin stud co-principal Christie Blackmore. Christie travelled two days with the only three bulls entered

Condamine Rainman 9106 took out third

Ms Blackmore said the adverse seasonal
conditions in the pastoral areas meant all
their weaners had been agisted to the

of just 80 purebred Brahman stud cattle on
their 250,000 acre property.

Vale: Spicer Briggs
Cona Creek, Springsure
by Lindel GREGGERY
Spicer Briggs was one of the bush’s
brightest and best, an honourable
man of high intellect, a pioneer of
improved pastures and someone
with a keen interest across a broad
range of subjects. He was a quiet
achiever who worked tirelessly with
his beloved dogs, horses and
cattle.
won Mingo the RNA Improved Pasture
Competition.
Tragically, his ability to express that
potential was cut short at age 39 when a
benign brain tumour confined Spicer to a
wheelchair, paralyzing his left side and
robbing him of mobility and clear speech.
Unfortunately his desire to breed polled
cattle fell by the wayside in the following
years, as did his dream to breed fringed
violets, a native lily.
Spicer bought his first Brahman bulls in
1961 from Hugh and Phyllis Innes’ Walla
stud, Gin Gin, and seven years later married
their daughter Carolyn. In 1968 the couple
bought an irrigated farm at Proston, but
health problems from an undiagnosed
brain tumour soon began to appear and
in 1971, just three years into their marriage,
Spicer suffered his debilitating injury.
Carolyn, still in her 20s, became his sole
carer as well running the beef enterprise
and raising two-year-old Ra and one-yearold Bentley. Their daughter Anna completed
the family in 1973.
Spicer passed away on August 23, 2010,
aged 78, and will be remembered as an
inspiring man with an iron will.
Born on February 25, 1932, the youngest
of three children of Rawdon and Joyce
Briggs, Spicer grew up on the family beef
property Swindon, at Mt Perry. He studied
via correspondence and in 1948-50 attended
The Southport School, where he enjoyed
rifle shooting, rowing, Rugby Union and
tennis.
At age 19 he inherited a portion of Mingo
at Mt Perry from a relation, and over the
next decade expanded his holdings from
2025 hectares to 5670 ha by acquiring
neighbouring properties.
His widow, former ABBA president Carolyn
Briggs, said Spicer pioneered pasture
development in the district in the mid-1960s
and in 1976 his hard work and foresight
46 December 2010
“He bought a lot of different seed and gave
lots of different plants a try to see what was
suitable for our district,” Carolyn said.
“We had DPI people coming out here to
inspect our paddocks and take notes so
they could spread the word about improved
pastures.”
Carolyn said Spicer had a keen interest in
politics, botany, geology, history and
geography. He had a passion for gardening
and would drag himself from the wheelchair
and across the ground to tend to his
beloved plants. His iron will also extended
to his fitness regime, with Spicer riding an
exercise bike daily for hours at a time, as
well as doing exercises to maintain his
strength. To the end, he continued to rise
at 4.30am in summer and 6am in winter.
A typical bushie, Spicer’s favourite foods
were brown bread, corned beef, cheese,
honey and heavily sweetened black tea,
and he showed little interest in expanding
his culinary repertoire.
Speaking at Spicer’s funeral, son Ra said his
father described his condition as “like being
wrapped tightly in cotton wool”.
“But in 39 years in a wheelchair I never heard
him openly complain about anything,” Ra
said.
“His thoughts were sharp and clear but
getting them out was hard work and slow.
Most people couldn’t wait or were
embarrassed to – it was their loss.
“It was a measure of the strength of his
character that he did not allow his disability
to burden anyone more than was absolutely
necessary,” Ra said.
“One thing he did not do was waste any of
the life he did have … Dad took from the
world as little as he was able and gave as
much as he could.”
“Dad had amazing strength, he was so
inspiring,” daughter Anna said.
“He was an honourable man, a man of
integrity, a man of conscience. I hope we
all can live up to his standards,” said son
Bentley.
Spicer is survived by his wife, three children,
seven grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.

Strong support at PB Fenech
A good crowd of bidders and buyers
from as far away as Victoria supported
the PB Fenech Brahman Sale at Sarina
in late October.
Leading studmasters were strong in
attendance although bidding records from
the sale show competition at the commercial
end of the market was down on previous
years.
Bidding stretched to $40,000 and above
three times during the sale, an indicator
that studmasters, having identified suitable
sire prospects in the offering, were prepared
to back their judgement with bidding
firepower. This was evidenced when 25
bulls sold at $10,000 and over.
The $44,000 sale topper, PBF Walney Manso
came out of the “Young Guns” section. He
is only 17 months, a son of JDH Woodson
De Manso and of a daughter of JDH Sir
Furnari Manso. This attractive prospect was
purchased by Vic Degaura, Savannah
Brahmans, Eton. Two lots earlier Noel &
Dallas Daley, Caiwarra, Julia Creek had paid
$42,500 for another 17 month old prospect,
PBF Cadiz Manso. This was a son of JDH
Calixto Manso, the only one represented
in the sale. The Daleys signed for three grey
sires in total. Their other purchases included,
at $16,000 PBF Arun Manso, a half-brother
to the sale topper, by JDH Mr Melanson
Manso. Eight young sons of Melanson took
the eye of producers at the sale, selling into
the five figure range three times and
averaging $8,690. While at the sale Noel &
PBF Walney Manso, the $44,000 sale topper with Paul Fenech of PB Fenech Brahmans and purchaser Vic
Deguara, Savannah Brahman Stud, Eton
Dallas also purchased for Kelly & Lucy Daley,
Katherine Downs, Northern Territory, the
top red bull of the sale, Bungoona Manhatten
at $13,000.
Ron & Daphne Kirk, Yenda Brahmans,
Gayndah were strong bidders at the sale.
They invested in five sires and a heifer.
The sale ring atmosphere of the PB Fenech Sale is enjoyed by a large crowd of Brahman
enthusiasts from New South Wales, Northern Territory, Victoria and Queensland

Garth hangs up his gavel
by Lindel GREGGERY
It was the end of an era on November
30 when legendary Queensland
auctioneer Garth Hughes hung up
his gavel after 54 years as a stock and
station agent.
Garth, who turns 72 in December, started
with Australian Estates Ltd in Brisbane in
1956, at the tender age of 17. A Brisbane
boy who attended Brisbane Boys College
(BBC) in his senior school years, he had an
interest in bloodstock thanks to his father
who was involved with the Queensland
Turf Club and Queensland Bloodstock
Breeders.
Garth cut his teeth auctioneering cull bulls
at Cannon Hill Saleyards, first learning the
tricks of the trade from colleagues Bill Kenny
and Bob Templeton, and later from the
legendary Dave Watkins in Rockhampton.
“They taught me how to handle my voice,
how to stand when you’re selling … and
the finer points of voice delivery and how
to put a patter together,” he said.
Garth believes that knowing the value of
the auction items is a key ingredient for
success.
“You’ve also got to know how to approach
your buying public, how to be authoritative
without being abrasive, and how to keep
yourself cool and calm under any
circumstances.”
After starting at Cannon Hill, Garth soon
moved on to auctioning Thoroughbred
yearlings at the Brisbane Exhibition Grounds
in the early 1960s, and his illustrious career
progressed to selling at some of Queensland’s
biggest and best bloodstock, beef stud
stock and property sales.
58 December 2010
His working life has survived many mergers,
takeovers and name changes, with
employers such as McTaggarts, Primaries,
AML Estates and Elders. In 1998 Garth joined
Dalgety (now Landmark), where he has
spent the past 12 years as chief stud stock
auctioneer. Being based in Brisbane and
living at Currumbin on the Gold Coast for
the past 12 years has necessitated lots of
travel, as well as patience from his wife of
48 years, Rae, and three sons, Cameron,
Duncan and Gavin (who also attended
BBC).
“She’s had to keep the home fires burning
in more ways than one,” Garth said.
Garth has auctioned Thoroughbreds in
every Australian state and New Zealand
and said his bloodstock highlights included
the dispersal sale of Alfred Grant’s
Gainsborough Lodge stud at Toowoomba
in 1977, the annual Magic Millions Sales, and
the auctioning of a yearling for $500,000
in Melbourne.
Beef industry highs feature 25 “or so”
Rockhampton Brahman Week Sales, 40
Rosevale Santa Gertrudis Sales, and 39
Yarrawonga Waco bull sales where he has
auctioned bulls to a top of $72,000.
Garth fondly remembers the epic “Sale of
the Century” in the 1980s, when he
auctioned off the massive CSR rural property
portfolio, which included Millungera
(bought by Acton Land and Cattle Co),
Chatsworth (bought by the McDonald
family), Burleigh Station, Thylungra and
Mapala.
Garth has enjoyed mentoring young
auctioneers and grooming them to
compete at the RNA Young Auctioneers’
competitions.
“It’s good to give them an opportunity and
a chance, then it’s up to them to get the
exposure. If they can get the exposure and
can handle that then we will see some
g o o d yo un g au c ti o n e e r s co min g
through.”
He said some of the unforgettable characters
he had met during his time in the stud
stock industry included Eric Nobbs, Jeff
McCamley, “Jimmy” Matthews, George
Greenup, Geoff Bassingthwaite, Colin Duff
and drover Sam Jensen.
In his retirement Garth plans to spend more
time with family, play golf and catch up
with former colleagues.
“What I’ll miss most is the phone not ringing
as much as it usually does, but I’ve got a lot
of mates from the stock and station industry
and there’s plenty of camaraderie there so
I’m sure we’ll be getting together for lunches
and can swap a few notes.”

Gunnedah AgQuip Field Day
When the gates to AgQuip at
Gunnedah open for Australia’s
biggest field day were booked and
crowd numbers up on previous
years.
With heavy rain and flash flooding in the
days before the event, things became a
little nerve racking. Langley Dale at Dubbo
were unsure if they would get out in the
truck with there display cattle, and Destys
with display cattle as well as the promotion
trailer was in the same predicament.
It looked like ABBA might have an empty
site except for Cayuse with cattle but no
promotional items or signage, however all
arrived on the Monday afternoon to set up
the yards only to discover we were short
quite a few panels but luckily the supplier
had extra on his site. So by days end with
cattle settled and signs, banners and
promotions organised the site looked
great.
Tuesday was a beautiful day with sun shining
and no wind, but Wednesday was cold and
cloudy then Thursday we froze and typically
about lunchtime down came the rain, which
continued well into the night. The rain
proved quite annoying especially whilst
trying to pack up and dismantle yards in
the slop, and then manoeuvring the
promotional trailer from the shed to the
road.
It was great to see ABBA members even
from Queensland visiting the site, just to
say g’day or to view our display. Quite a
few comments were made that our site
62 December 2010
ABBA site at the Gunnedah AgQuip Field Day
was people friendly and inviting (no hard
sell) and that it was easier to find this year
as the new tear drop banners really stood
out whilst walking along the rows.
Interest in our sale animals and crossbreds
was well received with quite a few catalogues
and flyers being handed out. As well as
we had a great run on promotional items.
Thanks go to Langley Dale at Dubbo, and
Destys at Barraba for again supplying stud
cattle and Cayuse at Manilla for supplying
stud and a variety of crossbreds which gave
an overview of what is available when
crossing with Brahmans.
It is wonderful that these people are able
to reorganise their work load to be away
from home for the 4 days of Agquip, as not
John and Bryan D’Este, Desty stud, Barraba NSW; Ken
and Kath Burton, Petrie Park stud, Inglewood Qld;
Vince McAuliffe, VP Grazing, Cayuse stud, Manilla
NSW and Liz Robinson, Langley Dale stud, Dubbo
NSW
only do they set up and dismantle the site,
tend to their animals and answer questions
regarding the breed but also assist with the
sale of promotional items on display.
So once again I would like to thank them
and hopefully will see them again next
year.

Gympie Saleyards, March 5 2011.
The stellar unreserved offering involves
approximately 170 lots that comprises 26
cows and calf units, 11 wet recipients and
heifer calves, 87 PTIC cows and heifers, 6
PTIC recipients and 40 weaner heifers.
Included throughout the offering will be
22 reds.
Established in 2004 outside Gympie by Tim
and Sally North the operation has developed
in a relatively short time into a leading
nursery through careful and rapid expansion
via ET and IVF programmes.
No expense has been spared in the careful
acquisition and selection of the donor band
of 23 red and grey females from leading
herds including, Lancefield, Tartrus, EL JA,
Apple Pie, Clukan, Eureka Creek, FBC W,
Kenrol, NCC, Palmvale, Lanes Creek, Garglen,
KP and Brahrock. One of the main selection
criteria when selecting potential donors
was that they had to come from proven
successful families that have bred on over
several generations.
The majority of donors will have calves at
foot and will have been rejoined. The two
main joining sires are both greys. NBS and
the Garglen prefixes have the exclusive
Australian semen rights to both these
impressive individuals, JDH Mr Dwayne
Manso and JDH Peter Pan Manso.
Mr Dwayne Manso is a proven sire and
currently ranked #6 in the US for yearling
weight. Mr Dwayne is a ‘01 drop son of
Prescot Manso (Madison) while Peter Pan

where approximately 170 lots will go under the hammer in the unreserved auction
such a high standard that the collection
and processing was done in an extraordinary
short period of time. Peter Pan Manso (JDH
Mr Matt Manso –Liberty/Alexo Manso) has
since re-entered the sire battery in the Locke

Approximately half of all the joinings will
be to Mr Dwayne Manso and Peter Pan

be in calf to a gallery of Hudgins sires
including, Berkman, Alamo, Avery, Riddell,
Mitch, Atlas, Winston, Ashton, Deeds and
Brandon. Bolstering these matings will be
other pairings utilizing high profile bulls of
the calibre of FBC D Jacko De Manso, FBC
D Boston Manso, Tartrus Rembrandt, Fern

Commenting on the herd and it ’s
development Tim North said ‘From the
start we had a simple philosophy, begin
with the very best genetics available, devote
100 percent your time and energy into
producing top quality cattle’. ‘ Starting from
scratch wasn’t easy, but this simple approach,
combined with the genetic essentials,
extensive AI, ET and IVF programmes has
delivered us we believe, a broad industry
acceptance in a relatively short time’. ‘ Our
aim has always been to produce sensibly
priced, fertile, functional cattle that
deliver a wealth of predictability and
consistency’.
In all there are 30 individual grey and 10

Targeting growth rates for MSA
from Meat & Livestock Australia’s Frontier magazine Spring 2010
Central Queensland Brahman breeders,
David and Rebecca Comiskey, Melton,
Alpha have achieved excellent results
selling through the Meat Standards
Australia (MSA) system, despite being
located 450km from the nearest meat
processor.
The couple run a purebred red Brahman
breeder herd, mating half to red Brahman
bulls for breeding stock and the remainder
to Simmental and Angus bulls for sale steer
and heifer production.
They aim to turn-off two-tooth steers at
325kg and crossbred heifers at 240kg
carcase weight, all with a P8 fat depth of
about 14mm.
SELLING THROUGH MSA
The Comiskeys maintain a long-term supply
relationship with Teys Brothers, but thought
the distance to its Rockhampton meatworks
would be too far to successfully participate
in MSA.
In 2008, after a trial consignment with Teys
Brothers resulting in high MSA compliance
rates, the Comiskeys were satisfied that they
could meet the MSA requirement of cattle
being slaughtered no later than one day
after dispatch.
Another market for the Comiskeys opened
recently when Swift Australia’s Rockhampton
plant achieved MSA certification.
IMPROVING MSA COMPLIANCE
“We were a bit worried about hump height
– given our Brahman influence – but we
realised that if our cattle didn’t grade under
MSA, they would still meet the Japan Ox
market requirements,” David said.
“So the upside was an MSA premium and
– in a normal market – there was no real
downside.”
In three years of selling cattle through MSA,
95% of the Comiskey’s consigned cattle
have complied with national MSA standards
of meat colour 1b–3, pH >5.7, rib fat >3mm
and subcutaneous fat well covered. They
have also achieved 60% compliance to the
more specific requirements of the
processor’s carcase weight, dentition, fat
colour, butt shape, P8 fat depth and boning
group cut-off.
MSA Livestock Supply Chain Coordinator,
Mark Inglis, said the Comiskey’s cattle were
achieving good MSA marbling scores for
the type of cattle they ran, and had low
ossification scores.
“The Comiskeys are making good breeding
gains for growth rates and maturity in their
Brahman herd,” he said.
Mark revealed that their average MSA
marbling score was 284, with many animals
exceeding 300 (100–1,190 range), and their
average ossification score was 228, with a
high percentage of animals scoring 200 or
less (100–590 range).
David ceased using hormone growth
promotants (HGPs) in 2008, and the first
non-HGP cattle have been sold through
MSA this year. As a result, he has seen boning
groups improve, along with processor
compliance rates.
ADAPTING LIVESTOCK MANAGEMENT
David said becoming an MSA beef supplier
had not required major changes to livestock
management.
“Our Brahman cattle are well adapted to
our environment and our breeding is
concentrating on growth, quick maturity
and even fat cover,” he said.
“Nutrition management is focused on
achieving weight gains of 0.5–0.6kg/day
from our mixed grass–legume and
improved–native pasture base.”
The Comiskeys have been increasing water
points, fencing to land types and reducing
paddock sizes to achieve more even grazing,
increased labour efficiencies and easier
management across the property.
NIRS dung sampling is used to monitor
pasture protein and energy levels, and all
sale cattle are run in consignment mobs,
finished in paddocks that have been spelled,
and not moved for 30–40 days prior to
sale.
ANALYSING LIVESTOCK DATA
To improve data collection and increase
the pace of genetic gain for commercially
important traits, the Comiskeys recently
installed a Gallagher SmartTSi system for
live data entry and better traceability of
animals f rom tagging through to
processing.
“We can now record, identify and trace all
our stock and genetics for each animal’s
lifetime, and upload carcase performance
data from the processor,” David said.

Targeting growth rates for MSA
“It allows us to identify and use the highest
performing genetics for a range of attributes,
including weight gain, fat cover, muscling
and ossification, and it has good synergies
with the MSA system because of the
detailed carcase feedback and data analysis
support services provided.”
David and Bec said aside from the financial
reward of an average 10c/kg premium for
supplying MSA beef, they received personal
benefit from supporting an eating quality
system that was driving increased demand
and returns for grassfed beef.
David and Rebecca Comiskey
the prime objective
with Lindel Greggery
Another year has come, and almost
gone, bringing with it the inevitable
highs and lows. Thankfully, 2010
finished on a high with spring arriving
and bringing with it one of the best
starts to a season for years and a huge
relief for Queensland beef producers.
At times, wet conditions held back the flow
of prime cattle to the works. But as the
roads dried out and with a good start to
the finishing season the numbers soon
flowed into saleyards across the state.
Most major selling centres have maintained
that momentum throughout the past few
months and prices have tended to remain
strong across most descriptions.

The delegation experienced interest in
Australian genetics particularly bulls with
three generations of Australian breeding
and Breedplan data.
Marcello Vezozzo, Araucaria Genetica
Bovina, who has been importing and
marketing Australian Brahman semen
reported that sales have been expremely
strong.
The Brahman industry in Brazil is continuing
to expand at a rapid rate, particularly into
the commercial Nelore herds. There is
widespread use of AI in both the stud and
commercial herds. IVF technology is also
used heavily in the stud industry and there
is widespread use of performance recording,
particularly in the herds supplying bulls to
the commercial industry.
The farms visited included:
• Fazenda Terra Verde at Marilia owned by
Sergio and Dora Bendilatti. Sergio runs
8000 head on 3000 ha of pasture and is
one of the principal breeders of Red
Brahman in Brazil. Sergio also breeds Gray
Brahman and Nelore and is successfully
crossing Nelore with Red Brahman to
produce superior males for sale.
