gratitude for the honor bestowed
upon me at the banquet.
Thanks for helping me live
out my dream. Special thanks to

Congratulation Carmen,
you deserve this fine award and
thanks for being you.
Sam Milwit wins “Comeback” Award
The MCSSA is pleased to
announce that it has created a new
recognition award, “The Spike
Comeback Award” that is emblematic of the meaning of never give up
and quit.
Many senior athletes experience a variety of maladies that
ground them from participating in the
sports they love. Being the competitors that they are, it drives them to
make every effort to get back in the
game.

Word has it that there are several golf courses in our
area that would entertain the thought of creating a
golf league. The driving issue would be having a sufficient amount of players to make it worth while. If
anyone would be interested in playing in such a
league, please let us know. Just send an email message to [email protected]. None of the details
have been worked out nor has a day (or days) been
selected at this time. Let’s see how much interest
there will be.

working days were spent at the National Security Agency at
Ft. Meade. They asked me not to talk about it, so I don’t.
John Medford
You don’t need to live in Montgomery County
to play MCSSA sports, you just need to live close
enough to get to the games on time. I am a good example of that. I live in Gambrills, in Anne Arundel
County, about 35 miles from the Olney softball fields,
the Wheaton softball fields, and the Bauer Drive Community Center. Over the past 15 years I have made
that 70+ mile trip many times.
I’m a Maryland native, although I was actually
born in Delaware. That’s because the hospital closest
to where my parents lived on the Eastern Shore was
in Dover, Delaware. So that’s where they went on
May 7, 1941, to bring me into the world. My family
lived in a small town named Henderson in Caroline
County. The family business was a feed mill at the top
of the Choptank river, nearly straddling the Maryland/
Delaware state line. I worked at the mill frequently as
a preteen and teenager, although I didn’t like to; I just
wanted to spend all of my time playing ball. I attended
Henderson Elementary School, Greensboro High
School, Syracuse University, George Washington
University, and the University of Maryland. I had a
four-year tour in the Air Force mostly in the Far East - Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Thailand, and Viet Nam. My
Over the past 60+ years I have played baseball,
fast pitch softball, modified pitch softball, and slow pitch
softball on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Delaware,
throughout the Baltimore-Washington area, and in 22 other
states and three other countries. Leon Taylor introduced me
to Montgomery County softball in 1997. We had played
together for awhile in Anne Arundel County, so when his
Montgomery County team needed a player, he asked me if I
would like to play. I said yes and have been playing in
Montgomery County softball leagues ever since. Thanks
Leon! In recent years during the softball season, I have
played regularly two nights a week in Anne Arundel County,
two mornings a week in the Baltimore Beltway League, two
or three mornings a week in MCSSA leagues, and have
traveled on weekends with the 70+ Hamel Cavaliers tournament team. I usually play more than 200 games each season. In 2012, I played 263 softball games. Through the
years I have been lucky enough to play on some very successful teams and win numerous team and personal
awards, including induction into the Maryland Slow Pitch
Softball Hall of Fame in 2010. In 2011, the Hamel Cavaliers
won the Triple Grand Slam. That means that we won the
Eastern National Championship, the National Championship, and the World Championship for the 70+ age group.
Although I used to participate in many sports, now I
play only softball and basketball. As age started to catch up
with me, I had to cut down on other sports, but I haven’t
missed a basketball season in more than 50 years, playing
mostly in Anne Arundel County, Ft. Meade, and Montgomery County recreation leagues. Although I always found the
time to play league games while I was still working, I never
had as much time to practice and play pick-up ball as I have
had since my retirement from NSA in 1997. When I was
nearing retirement age, I called the recreation departments
of all the nearby counties to see what they had to offer.
When I called Montgomery County, I was told to contact Bill
Tait. Bill got me started in the Montgomery County basketball leagues in 1997 and I’m still playing. Thanks Bill! In the
past, I’ve played in as many as six leagues in a season, but
I’m now down to three league games and three pick-up sessions a week.
After many years of organizing basketball teams
and leagues in Anne Arundel County, I am now doing the
same job in Montgomery County as the commissioner of
the 65+ and 70+ MCSSA basketball leagues. Each season
we struggle to get enough players for these two leagues.

This first year’s winner is Sam Milwit. Sam’s
first setback was knee replacement, but he came
back and was instrumental in encouraging others
that a mere knee replacement did not mean the end
of athletics. However, he had a near-death experience when he had a dissected Carotid Artery that led
to seizures, memory loss and partial blindness.
Skilled doctors, good therapists, caring family members, supportive friends and encouraging teammates
all contributed to his successful recovery.
If you have ever seen him on the playing
field you know that he is still a competitor and loves
to play the game.

(Medford from Page 3)
That is unfortunate. I believe that there are a lot of
people out there, who have played basketball in the
past, and who would enjoy playing it again. It would
make me very happy to see more of you register and
play basketball with us. It’s fun. You should give it a
try.
I don’t like to dwell on this next topic and I
don’t let it define me, but there could not be a complete and accurate description of my athletic career
without mentioning injuries and illness. In 1977 I was
seriously injured in a car accident in Australia, while
on the way to a baseball tournament. There were
many broken bones and some serious internal injuries (crushed pelvis, fractured vertebrae, ruptured
spleen, cracked ribs, torn knee ligaments, etc.). Doctors told me that I should be able to walk again, but I
needed to understand that my athletic career was
over. Although things have never been the same
since the accident, it didn’t end my career. And now,
more than 35 years later, I am still playing. My second big setback came in 1992, when I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. The next year
was filled with surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and
other stuff that wasn’t much fun. I still have to get
regular cancer checkups, but I am proud to be a 20year survivor. And there have been some other injuries that happened as a more direct result of participating in sports. In 2000, my ulnar collateral ligament
snapped as my right arm used up its last allotted
throw. Shortly thereafter, I went to Birmingham, Alabama, and had renowned surgeon James Andrews
perform Tommy John surgery on my throwing elbow.
I was out of action for a few months, but that surgery
turned out to be the most successful repair job I ever
had. I’ve also had three broken collarbones; one from
biking, one from basketball, and one from skiing. The
one from skiing required surgery. My most recent
sports related surgeries were on my left foot to fix a
frozen big toe and on my right ankle to repair torn
ligaments and tendons. Knee replacements have
been recommended and might be next.
Nobody could play as often as I do without
the support of their family. And I have a wonderfully
supportive family: My wife June. My sons, Dan and
Steve. My daughters-in-law, Annie and Adrianne.
And my four grandchildren: AJ, a freshman at Millersville University; Erica, a freshman at Salisbury
University; Coral, a freshman at Old Mill High School;
and Tate, a second-grader at Odenton Elementary
School. My two sons, 47-year-old Dan (Mr. Defense),
and 46-year-old Steve (Mr. Offense), still play highlevel soccer together in the Anne Arundel county un-
Page 5
limited leagues, often against players 18-25 years old.
Many of you know my wife June and many of you
have seen her keeping score during tournament softball
games. But probably not many of you know that I taught
her how to keep score when she was only twelve. That
happened when I was a 14-year-old freshman on the high
school baseball team. I warmed the bench back then as
often as I played. One of my duties when not playing was to
keep score. June lived near the baseball field and came to
watch the games as often as she could. My pickup line
was: “Would you like to learn how to keep score?” She said
“Yes”, and the rest is history. On June 1, 2013, we will celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. June still travels to all
of my tournament games and is one of the best scorekeepers in senior softball. The tournament softball trips we make
together are just about our only vacations.
Life has been good to me. Playing sports with
MCSSA has only made it better.
Triple Play in the Ross Emerson League
On May 29, in the second game between the
Patriots and the Upstarts, with runners on first and second
a ball was hit to right filed and was caught by Bud Money.
Bud threw the ball to Glenn Orletsky at 1st Base for the
second leg, who then threw the ball to Hal Reuben at 2nd
Base to complete the rare triple play. Congrats Guys.

Letters to the Editor
“Spike” Comeback Kid Award
I would like to thank the MCSSA and especially Spike Bauroth and his committee for selecting me as
the first recipient of the award. I do recognize that
there have been many other worthy members of our
sports association who have endured major physical
and or health issues and have made remarkable recoveries. The road to recovery is often successful due
to great teamwork. In my case, I was fortunate to have
the following team who helped me through the long
recovery process: Dr, Michael Barth (primary care
physician), Dr. Robert Lowery (cardiac surgeon), National Rehabilitation Hospital under the direction of Dr.
Sandeep Simlote, Dr. Kevin Mc Mahon (orthopedic
surgeon), Montgomery General Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation Center, Paula Cirincione (nurse and physical therapist), Wayne Coy (mentor), Richard Sherman
and Harvey Ratner (personal trainers), numerous
teammates and most importantly my wife. Carol. As it
has been said, “quitters never win and winners never
quit.” So my advice to anyone facing adversity is to
make every effort to step up to the plate with the
dream that you just might hit one out of the park.
