RX® Personal Protective Equipment
RX® Personal Protective Equipment RX® Personal Protective Equipment The use of the correct Personal Protective Equipment at work is essential. The working environment and conditions determine the most appropriate protection in order to guarantee the safety of employees. In this catalogue all the functionalities and characteristics of RX® PPE are explained. A great deal of attention has gone into ergonomics and design - without compromising on quality. This means end-user acceptance is high, and compliance with your company’s PPE policy is assured. In addition, we’ve paid extra attention to guidance in relation to the correct use of RX® PPE. For respiratory protection, the catalogue also provides more information about Fit Testing. Here potential wearers are individually taught how to properly fit a mask. This test can also show whether the mask is truly suited to the facial features of the wearer. What does the law say? Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is equipment intended to be worn or held by a person as protection against health and safety hazards. When does the employer need to make personal protective equipment available? First of all, risks should be avoided as much as possible at source. When risks cannot be ruled out 100%, the employer is obliged to apply collective protection measures (e.g. by putting a safety guard around a machine). If the aforementioned measures cannot be applied, the employer must make appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) available, and provide training in its proper use. The employee in turn is required to use the Personal Protective Equipment made available to them. 2 Table of contents Disposable masks 4 Legislation and regulations 6 Selection and use 7 Fit Testing 8 RX Folded disposable mask 9 RX Pre-formed (cupped) disposable mask 10 RX Pre-formed (cupped) and reinforced disposable mask 11 SAFETY EYEWEAR 12 Legislation and regulations 14 Meanings of the EN marking 15 ® RX Coating 16 Lenses 17 RX Range 18 RX® Optiflex-C Clear lens 19 RX Optiflex-B Brown lens 20 RX® Optiflex-W Welding glasses 21 RX Optiflex-G Wide-vision Goggles 22 RX Optiflex-V Visitor glasses 23 Safety shoes 24 Legislation and regulations 26 Pictograms 27 Specifications 28 RX Securo 30 RX Solido 30 Safety gloves 32 Legislation and regulations 34 Glove Markings 35 Dyneema® Technology 36 Size table 38 Coatings 39 RX® Dyneema Safe3 41 RX Top-Flex PU Black & White 42 RX® Nitri-4-Grip 43 RX Durafit NFT 44 RX Chemresist 45 ® ® ® ® ® ® ® ® ® ® ® ® 3 4 Disposable masks Fine particles, toxic gases, vapours, smoke or mist in the atmosphere are latent health hazards. In the short term, they can cause or worsen acute problems with your airways and in the long term they affect the lung function … and this can have dire consequences of course. By acting preventatively and providing employees with suitable respirators, a large part of the unhealthy effect can be eliminated. However, correct use of these respirators is crucial. When the masks are not put on correctly or do not entirely correspond with the face profile, the necessary protection is insufficient or even non-existent. That is why ERIKS attaches so much importance to the correct use of the disposable masks. A Fit Test will determine what type of mask is best suited to the wearer. It also trains the employee in how to fit a mask correctly. See page 8 for more information about Fit Tests, or contact your local ERIKS Service Centre. 5 Legislation and regulations The law specifies that the employer must carry out a risk inventory and evaluation (RI&E) to map possible dangers and take measures if necessary. CE marking & technical standards Personal Protective Equipment in Europe must have CE marking. To award it to a product, a technical inspection by an independent authority is required as well as a prescribed quality control by the supplier. CMR substances – Carcinogenic Mutagenic Reprotoxic substances CMR substances are carcinogenic mutagenic repro-toxic substances. More specifically, substances which on their own (carcinogenic substances) or in combination with other substances (mutagenic substances) can cause cancer. Repro-toxic substances can have a negative effect on fertility, but also cause damage during the development of the unborn child and result in congenital disorders. NPF - Nominal Protection Factor European Standard (EN) These products meet the requirements of EC Directive 89/686/EEC (Personal Protective Equipment Directive) and are therefore CE marked. RX® masks have been tested and CE approved in accordance with EN 149:2001+A1:2009. The theoretical protection level of a respirator is based on the performance measured during tests in laboratories. The NPF is calculated by the Total Inward Leakage (TIL), as specified in the EN in question, divided by 100. The maximum concentration of a substance in the air, against which a respirator offers protection, is calculated by multiplying this NPF with the limit (the limits are specified in the lists published by the European authorities). The Nominal Protection Factor is a number denoting the level of minimal protection of the relevant type of mask. The higher the number, the better the protection. Type Offers protection against NPF APF FFP1 Inert dust and airborne particles. (Not against CMR substances ) 4 4 FFP2 Harmful dust and airborne particles. (Not against CMR substances ) 12 10 APF - Assigned Protection Factor Higher concentrations harmful dust and airborne particles 50 20 Determined following practical tests in the workplace. Unsatisfactory maintenance, instruction, incorrect use, movement, etc. are taken into account. As specified in BS4275, APF is the level of protection, which can be realistically achieved for 95% of trained and supervised users. FFP3 For more information on workplace exposure limits, and to view the list of substances currently listed visit www.hse.gov.uk 6 Selection and use ERIKS does not merely help you with selecting your disposable mask, but also gives you more information as to how these high-quality products should be used in order to guarantee maximum protection. Selection An RX® disposable mask supplied by ERIKS protects against: ■■ ■■ ■■ Dust: Particles whether or not floating in the air (i.e caused solid materials are crushed) Mist: Liquid particles floating in the air Fumes: Metal Particles floating in the air resulting from a combustion process Use RX® dust masks are high-quality products and offer a high level of protection. However, correct use of the masks is crucial. Incorrect use and a bad fit do not achieve the desired results and can have dire consequences. Steps 1 Hold the mask firmly and place the bottom headband over the head to the nape of the neck. 2 Place the mask under the chin, then over the nose, putting the top head band over the crown of the head. 3 Ensure a good fit by pulling back the side clips on the face and adjust comfort. 4 Ensure that the nose clip is moulded around the nose security. Warning: Disposable masks should not be used in Oxygen deficient atmospheres, or against harmful gases and vapours in concentrations exceeding the limit value. 7 FIT TESTING Why Fit Test? Personal Protective Equipment offers protection against specific risks to the health and safety of employees. However, PPE can also expose the user to to risk through improper use, incorrect application, etc. The right choice of PPE and their correct use are therefore essential. More than with gloves, footwear, or eye wear, the correct fit of respirator is critical for its effectiveness. A Fit Test includes training on how to fit a mask correctly to ensure a good face seal. Use A sweet or bitter solution is sprayed into the hood with an atomiser. If the wearer can taste the substance, he/she will be retested and adjustments will be made as long as the leak remains. The test has only been successful if the employee can no longer taste anything. The mask is then approved. In addition, before and during the Fit Test, a step by step explanation is given of how the masks are used correctly to ensure optimum protection. Please contact your local ERIKS Service Centre for more information. 8 RX® Flat-fold disposable mask A single use, lightweight, ergonomically shaped disposable respirator for protection against non toxic and toxic particles. Once damage has been inflicted, this often has serious consequences and usually the damage is irreversible. Rightly we should do anything to reduce the injuries to an absolute minimum. Flying particles cause the majority of eye injuries. Splashes of molten metal or corrosive liquids are detrimental in case of eye contact. When welding, the bright light, the ultraviolet and infrared rays can damage your eyes. Reason enough to be extra careful. All these different risks demand a specific approach. The working environment is decisive when choosing eye protection. This section explains all functions and features of RX® brand safety glasses. In addition to the protection factor we have paid a great deal of attention to the ergonomic aspect. The revolutionary “Shape Memory Technology”, ensures that RX Safety Eyewear gives exceptional wearer comfort, with the added bonus of a modern, stylish design, for every user. 13 Legislation and regulations Basic standards Standard for specific applications EN 166 Personal eye protection specifications EN 169 Filter for welding and related techniques EN 167 Optical test methods EN 170 Ultraviolet (UV) ray filters EN 168 Non-optical test methods EN 171 Infrared (IR) ray filters EN 172 Sunglare filters for industrial use EN 175 Equipment for eye and face protection during welding and allied processes EN 379 Specification for automatic welding filters Marking identification Optiflex-C-B-W Lens marking identification 2-3 Shade number U 1 Manufacturer Optical class FT KN Mechanical resistance Optional requirement Frame marking identification U Manufacturer En166 ft Standard Mechanical resistance Marking identification Optiflex-G Lens marking identification 2c-1.2 U 1 Scale number Manufacturer Optical class bt Mechanical resistance 9 Kn 0068 Field of use Optional requirement Notified body Frame marking identification U Manufacturer 14 En166 Standard 3459 Field of use bt 2c-1.2 0068 Maximum Mechanical number of scale Notified body resistance protection Meanings of the EN marking Scale Number code number Description Shade number Description VLT* range 2 Ultraviolet (UV EN170) 1.2 Clear 100% - 74,4% 2C of 3 Ultraviolet with good colour recognition 1.7 In/Out, yellow, clear mirrored, UVR 58,1% - 43,2% 4 Infrared (IR EN171) 2.5 Brown, smoke 29,1% - 17,8% 5 Sunglare filter without infrared specification (EN172) 3.1 Smoke mirrored 17,8% - 8,0% 6 Sunglare filter with infrared specification (EN172) 3,4,5,... 11 Welding * VLT – Visible Light Transmission OPTICAL CLASS type Description 1 2 3 Suitable for prolonged use Suitable for sporadic use Suitable for transient use Mechanical resistance Mechanical resistance A (T) B (T) F (T) Impact Maximum speed High energy impact 190 m/s Medium energy impact 120 m/s Low energy impact 45 m/s Polycarbonate glasses Goggles • • • • • K Tested under extreme temperatures (-5° - + 55C°) Resistance against surface damage against fine particles • • N Resistance against fogging • • T FIELD OF USE Symbol Description Goggles 3 4 Liquids (droplets or splashes) • Large dust particles (> 5 μm) • 5 Gas and fine dust particles (< 5 μm) • 8 9 Short circuit electric arc Molten metals and hot solids • 15 RX® Coating The innovative RX® coating technology provides the RX® safety glasses with superior resistance to scratches (outside), and fogging (inside). Coatings that have the double-effect (anti-scratch and anti-fog are mixed in 1 coating and therefore attain only half the efficiency); the RX® coating is 100% effective. The 2 coatings are applied separately where the anti-scratch coating is applied exclusively on the outside, and the anti-fog exclusively on the inside. Anti-scratch: The treatment of the external surface of the lens with this coating forms a hard film which constitutes a barrier against superficial damage which obstructs the view. The RX® lenses are thus protected against scratches and wear caused by friction with hard particles and dusty surroundings. The RX® Anti-scratch treatment is certified according the K requirements of the EN166 standard. Anti-fog: The anti-fog treatment is a film with a thickness of a few microns which is applied to the entire inner surface of the lens. The chemical and physical characteristics of the coating prevent condensation because the coating absorbs the fog. The RX® anti-fog coating is permanent and is certified according to the N requirement of the EN166 standard. 16 Lenses POLYCARBONATE POLYCARBONATE polycarbonaTE Clear Brown Green (Shade 5) Features: Features: Features: ■■ ■■ ■■ Protects against impact and UV rays Can be used for longer periods of time and causes neither distortion of the view nor eyestrain No colour distortion ■■ ■■ ■■ APPLICATIONS: Mechanical activities requiring a good view. ■■ STANDARDS: EN166/EN170 ■■ MARKING: 2C-1.2 VLT*: 89% Protection against impact, UV rays and harmful beams of light Use in the event of sunlight and risk of blinding Excellent colour recognition - TSR (Traffic Signal Recognition) Lets the light (spectrum) linearly go through Ensures a better adaptation of the eye to variable lighting conditions Protection against impact, UV and infrared rays and blinding caused by welding activities. Composite toe cap A composite toe cap is Non-metallic. Tested to 200 joules (EN12568) composite toe caps benefit from the elasticity of the raw material, which creates a sort of “memory effect”. This means the toes are not trapped, even when the shoe has experienced an impact. Sole resistant to temperatures up to 300 °C contact heat Footwear with this labelling has soles, which are resistant to temperatures up to 300 °C contact heat. HRO 300 °C Textile sole penetration protection Midsole protection made of special fibres. The midsole protection is certified under EN ISO 20 345:2011. The advantage is that the footwear is more flexible and gives better protection in warm and cold conditions, which gives a high comfort degree for the wearer. SCUFF PAD A scuff pad is a flexible pad which allows more ‘give’ at the point where the foot flexes when kneeling. Ideal for jobs where kneeling is required. Oil and petrol resistant outsole The outsole is oil and petrol resistant. RUBBER TOE REINFORCEMENT The rubber reinforcement on the toe helps resist wear and extends the life of the shoe considerably. Ladder grip A purpose made insert at the edge of the sole to improve grip and safety whilst using ladders. Shock-absorbing comfort sole All RX® comfort soles are shock-absorbing in the entire sole. This provides good walking comfort. 27 Specifications RX® safety footwear relieve the feet and the back The innovative design of RX® safety shoes & boots promote wearer comfort and ensure better protection of the foot. The component parts of the safety footwear are processed in such a way that no internal materials irritate the foot. soft & comfortable inner lining Technical textile materials, such as MS3, are primarily used for the anti-perforation sole. This makes it possible to cover the entire sole as opposed to a steel plate, which offers no protection around the outer edge. Additionally, MS3 textile offers better protection in cold and warm temperatures. MS3 textile anti-perforation sole also provides more sole flexibility and improved walking comfort. stabilizing TPU heel support ultra slip resistant and shock-absorbing comfort sole oil and petrol resistant resistant to temperatures up to 300 °C contact 28 ladder grip flexible scuff pad for working on the knees composite toe cap rubber toe reinforcement anti-perforation sole made from MS3 textile for more flexibility 29 RX® securo RX® Solido HRO 300 °C 30 Safety FOOTWEAR Features & benefits ■■ A study on the anatomy of the foot The days of wearing heavy safety footwear, offering poor standing and walking comfort, and annoying, hard, irritating materials are now finally gone. Wearers of safety footwear now demand much greater comfort – especially those working long shifts. The provision of high quality safety footwear to employees results, not only in accident reduction, but also a reduction in worker fatigue. Less fatigue = increased productivity. The development of RX® safety footwear is based on the anatomy of the foot, and the way in which a person moves around during a working day. This has resulted in safety footwear with a difference. ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ Composite toe cap which can resist a pressure of 200 J Anti-perforation sole made from MS3 textile; very flexible, gives a much better walking comfort, isolates against the cold and/or heat and protects a larger area of the foot Scuff pad allows more ‘give’ at the point where the foot flexes. The hand is a complex body part and contains an ingenious network of nerves and tendons that allow us to execute the most ordinary to the most complex motor movements. During every day activities all parts of the hand are exposed to risks such as cuts and burns, chemicals, etc. Most accidents involving injury to the hands happen in the workplace. Without adequate protection, any injury, no matter how small, can have a serious impact on an indivual, both at work and in the home. Attention to the various dangers in the workplace and the provision of the correct glove for different applications helps reduce risks to a minimum. This can result in reduced accidents, reduced sickness, reduced litigation, and increased production. 33 Legislation and regulations In order to help in making the right choice of Personal Protective Equipment simple, the PPE directive (89/686/EEG) was drafted. The various types of safety equipment are classified, which enables the responsible safety personnel to correctly assess the possible dangers and risks so that adequate PPE can be made available. As far as safety gloves are concerned, the characteristics which the gloves must comply with are described in a series of European standards. This state-of-the-art technology is pushing forward the properties of cut resistance in a lightweight and ‘natural feeling’ fibre. Applying Dyneema® Technology in a lightweight elasticised glove can boost cut performance levels up to EN388 Level 4, without the use of glass fibre or steel wire. It requires no compromise on comfort, tactility and weight of the glove, while providing significantly higher cut resistant performance, and better durability - especially compared to aramid based gloves. Abrasion Resistance Comfort Gloves with Dyneema® will keep your hands cool. In order to keep the hand or body temperature on a constant and therefore comfortable level, it is necessary to keep heat emission in balance with heat production. Protective clothes have to support this by dissipating heat from the inside to the outside. High Modulus Polyethylene (HMPE) has the property to transfer heat very quickly from the inside to the outside of the glove. Thanks to HMPE’s high heat conductivity, a glove made with sufficient HMPE content can release body heat much faster to the outside of the glove compared to other materials. This will prevent body heat accumulation inside the glove and thus sweaty hands. Protective gloves are often exposed to (sharp) objects that can abrade the glove. The more the glove is abraded the less protection it offers. Naturally, the higher the abrasion resistance a glove offers, the longer the wearer is protected. The chart shows the correlation between abrasion resistance and cut resistance consistency. Thanks to the high crystalline properties of the Dyneema® fibre, the abrasion resistance is extremely high; therefore the cut resistance remains at a constant high level, unlike other materials like cotton and aramids that show a decline in cut protection during wear of the gloves. 0,25 0-100 x cycles 100-500 x cycles 500-2000 x cycles 2000-8000 x cycles >8000 x cycles 100 80 60 Cotton 40 Aramid Leather 20 Heat releases rate J/cm2/s. The heat accumulation on the inside of a glove after one hour of static wear shows that there is correlation between hand temperature and HMPE content of the glove. 36 40°C 36°C 0% 50% 95% The more Dyneema®, the cooler the hand. The picture visualises what the end user will feel. The hands will stay dry and cool when wearing gloves all day – the actual temperature will stay close to body temperature. Gloves with other fibres cause an increase of hand temperature of several degrees above body temperature. The result is that the more HMPE fibre used in the glove, the more comfortable and cooler it will feel. Performance levels are established according to cutting index. The following equipment is used to assess the properties of gloves specified by the EN388 standard. Puncture and tear resistance are measured with a tensometer. Puncture resistance is measured as the force required to break through samples from gloves with a standard puncture needle (it should be noted that the design of this needle is comparable to that of a large nail, and the puncture strength from this test cannot be used to assess resistance to puncture by hypodermic needles). Tear resistance is measured as the force required to tear apart samples from the glove, which are in the form of a pair of trousers (this test is also known as a trouser tear test). The legs of the trouser samples are pulled apart and the maximum force used to assess tearing resistance of the material. A Martindale wear and abrasion tester is used to measure the abrasion resistance. The test involves rubbing samples, cut from the palms of gloves, against a standard glass paper until a hole is worn through one of the samples. The number of abrasion cycles is used to assess the performance. A Sodemat (coup) cut tester is used to measure the resistance to cutting. Samples are cut from gloves and placed in a frame which enables a circular, counter-rotating blade to slice through the glove material. The number of cycles required by the blade to cut through the glove are recorded. These are converted into a cutting index by comparison with the number of cycles required to cut through a standard reference material. The standard now allows for an alternative test method to be used for highly cut resistant products and this test is described in EN ISO 13997. It measures the force required to make a cut in the test sample 20mm long and is often referred to as the Performance Level EN420 General Requirements for Gloves This standard includes tests for glove dimensions, dexterity and allergens. For example, leather gloves are required to have a chromium VI content less than the limit of detection. Gloves are required to be neutral with respect to skin contact. 1 2 3 4 5 Abrasion Cycles 100 500 2000 8000 n/a Cutting Index 1.2 2.5 5 10 20 Tear Force (N) 10 25 50 75 n/a Puncture Force (N) 20 60 100 ISO Cut Load (N) 150 n/a ≥13 ≥22 Coup Cut Machine 38 Size GUIDE 39 RANGE safety gloves RX® Dyneema Safe3 RX® Top-Flex PU RX® Nitri-4-grip RX® Durafit NFT RX® Chemresist 40 Cut resitant gloves RX® Dyneema Safe3 Seamless knitted Dyneema® glove with polyurethane coating EN 388: 2003 Resistance against mechanical hazards 4343 Test Performance level Abrasion 4 Cut 3 Tear 4 Puncture 3 Features Comfort The seamless construction provides an exceptional level of comfort, whilst the open back style allows excellent breathability.
