CROSS COUNTY ONE ACT The 2015 competition piece for Cross County One Act is “Princess Whatshername.” The public performance will be held Monday, November 23 at 7:00 pm. Plan now to come and watch this fast-paced play! November 19, 2015 FROM THE DESK OF THE SUPERINTENDENT - BRENT HOLLINGER Time is flying by fast! It is hard for me to comprehend that we are just a couple weeks away from Thanksgiving break. The fall sports seasons are finished, One Act is already competing, and orange balls are bouncing in the gym! The first basketball game is under a month away (December 3) and the first wrestling meet is also just under a month away (December 5). Our One Act crew got off to a good start to the season by placing 8th at a very tough Loup City invite. Great job! We did NOT have school on November 6, as it was a staff development day. In the morning, we invited all stakeholders to participate in a perception data retreat. Great discussions were had with teachers, non-certified staff, students, parents, and community members and very good information was gleaned from those discussions. I want to thank those who took some time out of their day to come out and share their perceptions on what we do well and what areas we can improve on. The rest of the day included Rtl, PBIS, and Marzano instructional strategies training. It was a very productive day! The monthly Board Meeting was November 9. Four action items were on the agenda for approval. The Board approved activating the Early Retirement Incentive Program and also approved the Cross County technology plan. Both of these items are yearly requirements to be voted on by the Board of Education. The Board also approved a land management proposal that came out of committee and also approved hiring EGAN to refinish the west gym floor. Cross County hosted CRC One Act competition on November 18. Our 3rd Annual “COUGAR ACADEMY” will be held Friday, November 20 at 2:30 pm. At the Cougar Academy, we recognize the academic achievements of our students in grades 3-12 with the State NeSA tests. We have a large group of students once again who scored perfect scores on their NeSA tests!! Last, but not least, I wanted to let you know that we are hosting our own Robotics Tournament on Saturday, November 21. Our Robotics Program over the years has competed very well at the State, National, and Global levels and this is a great opportunity to watch our kids “do their thing” in competitive competitions with their robots. So many great things going on at Cross County! Until next time…..GO COUGARS!! Now’s the time and opportunity to show the material out of which the student body of Benedict’s school is made. —— Quite a few number of farmers are expecting to be thru with their corn husking this week. —— Don’t forget the Thanksgiving dinner and supper in the Lutheran church dining room. The following was taken from The Benedict Booster!, November 26, 1925 issue. The Benedict Booster! Frank Propst, country treasurer, gives it out that he is thru with itch for office. Still, such a decision may not be final. ===== It is an established fact that the average individual would rather be charged with “malicious intent,” than to be charged with the offense of making a “blunder.” Instances can be cited if you so demand. ===== It is estimated that the cornfields of this county have presented their owners with a yield of 26 bushels per acre this year. Rather a poor average, it seems to me, when I read of 100 bushel averages on old and worn out lands in the older states. Sometimes I am prone to question if such results are the results of farming? Page 8 FROM A READER The following is from the September 12, 2015 issue of The San Diego Union Tribune. Lynn is the son of Imo Richardson of York. Animal Doc A Rare Breed Story By Deborah Sullivan Brennan When Imani, an 18-yeaar-old gorilla at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, developed labor complications during the delivery of her first baby last year, zoo officials reached out to George Lynn Richardson, an Encinitas veterinary surgeon whose patient roster includes everything from horses to rhinos and elephants. Richardson, 63, of Encinitas, assisted zoo veterinarians during the surgery, and Imani delivered a healthy baby girl, Joanne. Richardson developed his specialty with exotic animals through work with race horses in Southern California. Since then he’s repaired fractures, removed tumors and assisted in births for animals from around the world. He talks about some of his most challenging cases. Q: How did you decide to become a veterinary surgeon for large animals? A: Having grown up on a farm in Nebraska, I knew that I wanted to live somewhere that wasn’t so cold and nasty in the winter. My initial pursuit to that end had me do my undergraduate and veterinary school training in Florida. An externship in veterinary school was at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park racetracks with noted racetrack practitioner Greg Ferraro, who introduced me to Southern California and also to the equine surgeons at UC Davis veterinary school. That led to internship and residency training at UC Davis following graduation from veterinary school. I knew at that time that I wanted to do more than general practice and actually loved doing emergency surgery on horses. Q: How did you get started in San Diego? A: I moved to the San Diego area to start my specialty referral, veterinary surgery and sports medicine practice for horses at the Helen Woodward Equine Hospital in Rancho Santa Fe in 1988. Prior to that I had lived in La Canada while working on the thoroughbred racetracks in Southern California. Q: What are some of the exotic animals you treat, and what surgery do they need? A: I have worked on the small dik-dik gazelle species up to the rhino and elephants. I usually am November 19, 2015 Q: A: Q: A: Q: A: involved with the hoof stock in that they have more things in common with the domestic hoofed animals that I have been trained for. The problems that may require surgery include fracture repair, abdominal surgery to remove intestinal stones or other foreign bodies, hernia repair and surgery of the reproductive tract. How did you become involved in treating exotic animals? In 1994, I had a horse-owning client who worked with the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park asked me if I would be interested in doing some work with them. I was asked to consult on a case involving one of the elephants that was lame at the Zoo Safari Park. I worked together with the veterinary staff and we made a treatment plan based on what would be done with a similar lameness problem in a horse. More cases followed and now it’s been 21 years assisting the veterinary staffs with some of their complex surgical problems. What were the challenges of the gorilla C-section you performed last year? The biggest challenge of that surgery was not being able to grasp a limb of the fetus through the uterus and make an incision right over it outside the abdomen like I am used to doing in domestic animals. The wall of the uterus was two to three times the thickness of nonprimate uteri, which made closure much different. The other challenge was that the keepers indicated prior to surgery that the gorilla was a “picker,” meaning that if there was anything sticking out of her skin she would be picking at it. So I used a couple extra deep suture lines and buried the skin sutures and followed that by sealing the wound with the surgical version of super glue. The incision healed without a blemish and she never looked back. How do you adapt surgical techniques for domestic animals to exotic animals? Surgery is surgery regardless the species. There are anatomical differences that can make doing abdominal surgery in a rhino with skin that is at least an inch thick a bit challenging just getting into the abdomen. There have been specialized laparoscopes and anesthesia equipment custommade for rhinos and elephants. Using casts on a rhino with an orthopedic problem requires a few (Continued on Page 9) November 19, 2015 UNITED METHODIST CHURCH NEWS Greeters for December are Dave & Mary Doremus We will be serving the Thanksgiving meal at the Living Water Rescue Mission on Thanksgiving Day. †††††††† Joint Church Service Sunday, November 29 at 8:15 am Zion Lutheran Church †††††††† ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH NEWS TOGETHER, WE ARE SPREADING GOD’S WORD, DOING GOD’S WORK! FROM A READER (Continued from Page 8) extra rolls of the cast tape and some reinforcement to allow the cast to survive to do its job. Q: What are some recent advances in veterinary surgery? A: Improvements in ventilation during anesthesia have been a big benefit. Specialized endoscopic equipment has made these diagnostic procedures more common in zoo animals. Orthopedic surgical instruments and implants have improved significantly in the past 20 years, making fracture repair better. Digital radiography is a wonderful advance making immediate access to the image possible. Q: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? A: Follow your passion and do what you love to do. Q: What’s the one thing people would be surprised to find out about you? A: That I get up before the sun comes up every morning and get in the ocean for a surf session. Q: Please describe your ideal San Diego weekend. A: It would start in the ocean before the sun comes up, followed by breakfast with colleagues or friends. Read the paper, possibly do a crossword puzzle. Take a bike ride or work in my yard. What I love about Encinitas… Being close to the beach, my work and just about anything I might need on a daily basis.
