POLITICAL parties across the spectrum
drew packed stadiums of supporters on
the last weekend before the elections on
Wednesday, each promising voters bang
for their buck.
) The ANC’s Siyanqoba Rally delivered
a show of force as its supporters flocked
to the Ellis Park stadium where the party
wrapped up its election campaign.
MC and ANC chairwoman Baleka
Mbete announced that the 63 000 capacity
stadium was filled to capacity, adding that
another 100 000 people were outside wanting to enter. And that some 30 000 had gathered at the nearby Joburg Stadium.
Things nearly got off to a rocky start
when sections of the crowd erupted in
song as President Jacob Zuma stepped up
to address them.
Seemingly to his relief they were singing pro-ANC songs. He soon continued
with his speech, repeating his campaign
message that the ANC was the only party
that could take the country forward.
“We have been interacting with the people in the past weeks in vigorous door-todoor campaigns and we feel confident
about the future of this country,” he said.
) The EFF held their final rally at the Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo on Sunday.
The event also celebrated the party’s
third birthday. EFF leader Julius Malema
said the people of Limpopo should stop loving food parcels more than their children’s future.
“Our parents, you have been receiving
food parcels and T-shirts since 1994. It’s
time to vote for the right government so
that your children can get jobs and afford
to buy their own food and clothes,” he said.
Malema wished the DA, ANC and other
parties luck in contesting for power on
Wednesday, and saluted the EFF that ended its election campaign without loss of
life.
) DA leader Mmusi Maimane promised
the country better services and good governance.
Speaking at Dobsonville Stadium in
Soweto on Saturday, he said people should
vote for the DA to honour former president Nelson Mandela who represented all
South Africans.
He said the ANC, led by Zuma, had lost
its values and vision set by Mandela and
betrayed the people by not keeping their
promises of better services.
)In Ulundi, northern KZN, the IFP’s closing rally yesterday saw about 50 000 supporters from different municipalities in
Zululand descend to the local sports
ground.
IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi said
this year’s elections would be tough. He
urged members to report if they see outsiders casting votes in their wards.
On Saturday Buthelezi was welcomed at
ANC president Zuma’s home town of
Nkandla by about 20 000 IFP members.

The girl from Germiston,
Ekurhuleni, said she was walking
home from school on Thursday when
a man bumped into her and threw
muthi on her.
“I became dizzy and then everything
went dark. The man dragged me to his
place, where there were four other
men. The walls of the room they took
me to were covered in red cloth and
there were signs of Satanism
everywhere. The men were dressed in
red garments and black hats to
symbolise the devil,” said the girl.
She said the men started singing in
a foreign language and threw muthi at
her. The girl told the SunTeam one of
the men said she had officially joined
their secret group and she needed to
sleep with one of them because it was
an order from the ancestors.
“They ordered me to take off my
clothes, but I refused. Three of the
men grabbed me and forcefully
stripped me. The leader had sex with
me while the others surrounded the
bed and kept on singing. I was
vulnerable and couldn’t fight back,”
she said.
The grade 11 pupil said she escaped
when the men left to go to the shop
and left the door unlocked. She ran
home and reported the incident to her
father, who called the police.
The girl’s father said he reported
the case to the cops and they went to
the two-roomed house in the
Germiston CBD where the men lived.
“We found the leader, but he
resisted arrest and managed to
escape,” said the father.
On Saturday two of the suspects
went back to the house and the cops
pounced on them while they were
sleeping. Their leader was later bust
after cops tricked him into thinking
they were customers.
The Germiston police’s Sergeant
Styles Maome said: “We would like to
confirm the Germiston family and
child protection services unit is
investigating a case of rape.
“Suspects were arrested and will
appear in court today.”

THERE was celebrating
and ululating at a
Joyous Celebration show
on Saturday.
This was after a young
couple got engaged on
stage at the concert held at
the Durban ICC.
Lethukuthula Buthelezi
(31) surprised his
girlfriend Sithembile
Mntambo (29) when he
declared his love for her in
front of the packed venue.
He said although they
had only been dating for
three months, he saw a
future with Sithembile.
Joyous Celebration cofounder Jabu Hlongwane
helped Lethukuthula
organise the huge surprise.
During the show, he called
six people who were
wearing the choir’s
T-shirts to come on stage.
And Lethukuthula was one
of them.
Jabu asked the fans their

names, but when he got to
Lethukuthula he asked
him which soccer team he
supported. He responded
by saying Kaizer Chiefs, at
which point Jabu called
Sithembile on stage.
As soon as she reached
the stage, Lethukuthula got
on one knee and said:
“Will you marry me?”
The crowd went crazy
after she said yes.
Lethukuthula told Daily
Sun: “I’m a fan of Joyous
Celebration and I asked
them to help me make this
happen. I chose to do it
here because I wanted the
whole world to see how
much I love her.”
Sithembile said: “I’m
still shocked but excited.
We’ve been dating for
three months. Although he
gave hints and spoke about
marriage, I didn’t take him
seriously. I didn’t even
suspect this was about to
happen and my family
doesn’t know yet.”
Michael: People should do martial arts
By LERATO MATSOSO
HE leaves women breathless
with his good looks and
powerful body, while men look
up to him for his dedication to
martial arts.
And now the award-winning
actor and eight belt-holder in
mixed martial arts styles,
Michael Jai White (48), is in
Mzansi to win even more fans.
The Hollywood heartthrob is
in Mzansi for the e.tv martial
arts show, Last Fighter Standing
(LFS).
He is here for filming as he is
also the show’s presenter.
Michael is best known for his
role in the hit US movies, Why
Did I Get Married and Why Did
I Get Married Too by producer
and actor Tyler Perry.
The show follows fighters from
different martial arts disciplines
around the country on their
journey to be crowned the last
fighter standing SA champion.
Speaking to Daily Sun,
Michael said: “I decided to take
on the show because I believe in
the idea.
“I’m a long-standing fighter in
martial arts and also a lover of
watching competitions. I believe
this show has the best balance.”
With today marking the
beginning of Women’s Month,
Michael encouraged women to
try the sport.
“Training in martial arts is
beneficial for women. By nature,
they take things in and absorb
their challenges.
“To train is basically to
release. You owe it to yourself,”
said the star.
He added: “In overcoming
obstacles, you are your own
toughest rival. It is about
conquering yourself. When you
do it, everything else becomes
easier.”
He especially encouraged black
South African men to take part
in martial arts.
“The essence of sport is
competing against another
person. To me this is one of the
ultimates in any type of
competition – struggle as a
symbol of life.”
He added that viewers are in
for a treat with the show.
) LFS airs every Monday at
10.30pm on e.tv. The finals
are set for October, after
which the last fighter
standing will walk away with
R1 million.

TRAIN KILLS BLIND WOMEN
Thugs stole rails from footbridge
By NTEBATSE MASIPA
THUGS had stolen the bridge’s railings, so the blind gogo and her blind
daughter were forced to cross at the
railroad tracks.
Then horror happened.
A passenger train came rushing at
speed. Seeing the blind pair, the driver
jumped on the brakes and hooted several
times.
The blind mum and daughter tried to
get out of the way – but the beast of steel
killed them in an instant!
Commuters and nearby squatters
watched in horror as the Saturday 1pm
train slammed into gogo Bhekephi
Ndlovu (63) and her daughter, Smangele
(43), from Thintwa in Empilisweni,
Katlehong.
Gogo Bhekephi fell between the rails
but Smangele was dragged a distance
and cut to pieces.
The train finally ground to a halt as
passengers and residents from the nearby squatter camp screamed in horror.
“There was no way the driver could
have stopped the train,” said witness
Thomas Dube.
A shocked relative, Raymond
Simelane, collects the clothing of his
dead aunt from the tracks.
Resident Fezile Nkosi said the gogo
and her daughter were coming from a
local doctor when the accident occurred.
“They always walked together to give
each other support. It’s sad that they had
to die together.”
Residents told Daily Sun they’ve been
crossing the railroad tracks since thugs
cut off the metal rails of the foot bridge.
The body of gogo Bhekephi Ndlovu lies covered with an emergency blanket
where she died between the tracks.
“Nyaope thugs also used to mug people
on the bridge, threatening to throw them
onto the tracks if they didn’t heed their
demands,” one of the residents said.
Relative Raymond Simelane told Daily Sun his aunt had been born blind and
her daughter and son too.
“Her blind son was buried last month.
Now we have to bury them. We are devastated because it happened so soon.
“We will perform rituals to remove
their spirits from here,” said Simelane.
Inquest dockets were opened at Thokoza Police Station.

Night of
fun ends

Saturday night.

IT WAS Saturday night and time
for fun in Bolani Street, Jabulani,
Soweto where the taverns were
pumping out loud beats next to
the busy road.
A young man was partying
with friends when he decided to
dash out and buy a cigarette at a
house across the street.
But in a flash he was dead when
a VW Polo Vivo came speeding
down the road straight into the
unnamed man, sending his body
flying through the air.
The driver sped off.
The SunTeam arrived as paramedics declared the young man
dead at the scene.
His friends couldn’t accept the
terrible news; some even tried to
assault the paramedics. Metro
cops arrived to try and calm down
the situation, but the angry crowd
threatened to take out their frustration on the lawmen.
“We asked for speed bumps but
we never get any response.
“When we put stones on this
road there were no accidents, but
metro cops removed them and
now a life has been lost.
“How many people have to die
until something is done,” angry
residents wanted to know.
Soon some were seen putting
stones on the road, blocking passing cars as more people gathered
to witness the horror that had just
occurred.
Cries of grief pierced the night
when the boy’s family arrived.
A witness, Sthembiso Dlamini
(25), told Daily Sun that everything happened so quickly.

MY
KIDS!
didn’t do enough – family
By EVERSON LUHANGA
TWO children are in hospital after
their father allegedly poisoned them
to get revenge on their mum for dumping him earlier this year.
The suspect is also accused of setting
alight a car belonging to his former girlfriend’s new lover.
The 31-year-old mum of three from
Rabie Ridge, Midrand said her former
boyfriend could not accept she had
dumped him.
“I left him because he was abusive and
controlling. He used to beat me in front
of people. Sometimes he would even
come to my parents’ house and beat me,”
she claimed.
“He has been sending me messages
threatening to kill me and the kids.
“I reported it to the cops and they
served him with a protection order.
“This didn’t stop him from sending
messages to intimidate me, though.”
She claimed on Thursday she received
a message saying he had killed two of the
kids and was going to commit suicide.
“My family and I rushed to his place
and found the kids, aged four and seven,
lying on the bed unconscious.
“We called an ambulance and they
were rushed to hospital,” she said.
The family accused the police of not
doing enough to protect the children.
The children’s mkhulu said: “If the po-
lice had arrested him when he was sending my daughter threatening messages,
the poisoning could have been avoided.
“He even drove around our house and
swore at us.
“We have been living in fear. We are
not safe and we fear he will shoot us.”
Police spokeswoman Sergeant Sharon
Mahamba said a case of malicious damage to property was opened.
She said the family would be able to
open cases of attempted murder once the
hospital released the results of the children’s blood tests.
Vutha ate my study room!

degree.
Her hard work finally paid off
and to celebrate her coming graduation her husband and friends
planned to throw a big party for her
on Friday evening.
But now her spirits have been
dampened by a mysterious fire that
gutted her university books, the
chair she used to study and her laptop!
The 40-year-old from Daveyton,
Ekurhuleni, told Daily Sun she and
her husband, Thabo believed they
were hit by vutha on Friday morning.
Thabo said: “We immediately
thought it was an electrical fault
but the electrician said it couldn’t
have been the case.
“The fire gutted the room Queen
used for studying before it spread
to other parts of the house.
“Neighbours arrived to help us
extinguish the fire, which was leaping over the whole house.

I had planned to throw a party for
my wife.
“We don’t know which person
wants to ruin our progress but we
will stop them.”
Thabo said ever since he bought
a car he had been hearing things
moving around the house, but he
didn’t take it seriously.
He said the fire started while they
were sleeping.
“We heard a big bang and saw a
ball of fire engulfing Queen’s study
room. Luckily, no one was hurt.”
He said they were left with nothing and appealed to SunLanders for
donations.
An inquest docket was opened.

THE Independent Electoral Commission has beefed up security after ballot papers were stolen in Soweto last week.
On Friday the IEC said it was
aware of an incident in Dobsonville, Soweto, during which boxes
containing ballot papers for
Wednesday’s election were stolen
from a delivery vehicle.
IEC spokeswoman Kate Bapela
said following the incident, all vehicles transporting IEC material
were being escorted by police.
The IEC said it was unlikely that
the person who stole the boxes was
aware they contained ballot papers, as they were unmarked.
“However, as part of our security
measures, each ballot book has a
unique serial number, allowing us
to identify which ballots were affected,” the IEC said.
) Meanwhile, more than 700 000
South Africans were expected to
cast their special votes this morning. Those who qualified for special
voting included people who would
not be in their districts at the time
of voting, people with disabilities,
pregnant women, election officials
as well as members of the army and
police force.
Voting stations will be open between 8am and 5pm today and tomorrow for special voting.
) Minister of Police Nkosinathi
Nhleko said more than 50 000 police
officers would be deployed at voting stations across the country.
