Please help seniors, the working
poor and our homeless population
get a hot meal. The Reverie BBQ
Restaurant’s free meal program provides over 1000 dinners a month for
those in our community most in
need. Without your support this program will be coming to an end. Every
month long lines of people wait for a
modest yet nutritious meal provided
by Cheryl and Matt Kaufman and a
dedicated staff of volunteers. By day
the restaurant serves award winning
BBQ specialties to the public. “The
only reason we opened the restaurant
was to pay for the free meal program.”
said Matt Kaufman. But even that’s
not enough. The program relies on
support from donations and volunteers to keep it running.

Workers To Gain College Credits
With Workplace-Based Learning
Workers will earn college credits,
receive online instruction, and
advance their career prospects with
the help of their employers as part of
a new Workplace-based Learning
Initiative. The Workforce Board
selected three programs for funding,
with the focus on Vancouver area hospital workers, child care workers in
Whatcom and Skagit counties, and
machinist apprentices statewide who
will now be able to pursue engineering
careers.

Swinomish Channel to be fully
dredged this year
Rep. Rick Larsen, WA-02, today
announced that the Swinomish
Channel in Skagit County will be
fully dredged this year after receiving
$2.277 million in U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers funds. Larsen spoke to U.S.
Assistant Secretary of the Army for
Civil Works Jo-Ellen Darcy last week
and stressed his support for funding
of the project. “This funding is a
major boost for Western Skagit
County, which depends on the
Swinomish Channel as an economic
driver,” Larsen said. “The channel is
overdue for maintenance, but this
substantial investment will make sure
it is fully dredged this year. I told
Assistant Secretary Darcy that the
community strongly supports the
project and I am pleased the Army
Corps has recognized the value of this
investment.”

DressBarn Aims To Gather 60,000
Clothing Donations To Assist Women
With thousands of women unable
to secure employment because they
lack the resources to take the initial,

for a job interview, dressbarn (NASDAQ:ASNA) is teaming up with the
non-profit organization, Dress for
Success, to gather more than 60,000
articles of clothing, as part of its
S.O.S. – Send One Suit – Weekend®
donation drive, March 1-4. This year’s
clothing drive marks the 10th consecutive year dressbarn and Dress for
Success have partnered to help
women in need receive professional
business attire. All 825 dressbarn
stores across the country, including
dressbarn in Burlington, will serve as
drop-off sites for new or gently used
professional attire including suits,
dress shirts, blazers, pants, dresses
and shoes that will be used to benefit
women seeking to transition into the
workforce.
Skagit Valley College, Whatcom
Community College, announce innovative early childhood education
program partnership
Skagit Valley College (SVC), in
partnership
with
Whatcom
Community College (WCC), was
awarded one of three statewide workplace-based learning grants to support an innovative education program for early childhood education
adult workers who want to earn college credits and advance in their
careers. Awarded by the Workforce
Education and Training Board and
the U.S. Department of Labor, the
nearly $200,000 grant will fund scholarships for assistant teachers, aides,
and those currently unqualified to
progress in their careers due to limited credentials.

The results are in! Shared Work
keeps businesses afloat

Commissioner
Great news! More than twothirds of employers who participated
in Employment Security’s SharedWork layoff-avoidance program in
2011 say the program helped them
survive the recession.
Another 20 percent of businesses
reported that it probably had.
These amazing results show that the
Shared-Work Program is one of the most
effective tools offered by any government
agency to save jobs and businesses.
The program allows employers to
reduce the hours of their full-time
employees by up to 50 percent, while
the workers collect partial unemployment benefits to make up for some of
the lost wages.
This provides business owners with
immediate payroll savings without losing
skilled employees.
In 2011, 3,176 businesses and more
than 38,000 employees were approved to
participate in Shared Work, the secondhighest year on record.
The program also saved an estimated
26,000 jobs and more than $42 million in
unemployment-benefit payouts in 2011.
Most employers who responded to
Employment Security’s survey reported
cutting their payroll by 20 percent or
more. Additionally, 52 percent of businesses saved up to two jobs, while 30 percent saved three to five jobs, and another
12 percent saved five to 10 jobs.
Better yet, nearly 100 percent of participating employers said they would
apply for the program again and recommend it to other struggling businesses.
