The Low-Down on Advertising Know-How By Jane Atherton [email protected] Advertising takes time. It takes effort. And it takes cash. So when you’ve put all that in the pot, it’s tough when you don’t see the return you expected, and well, hoped for. LEGACY Platinum Members: I am asked repeatedly by small business owners attempting their own advertising why it doesn’t work. They’ve placed ads in yellow pages and local publications and swear that their investments were a waste of money. My response is usually, “Let’s not blame the media. Let’s look at the ads you placed.” And ninety percent of the time, there’s work to be done. continued on pg 6 MEMBERS Bronze Members: Phone: (360) 428-8547 Fax: (360) 424-6237 www.mountvernonchamber.com [email protected] PO Box 1007, 105 East Kincaid Street Mount Vernon, WA 98273-1007 Silver Members: Skagit Pediatrics Parker Way Veterinary Clinic ChamberChatJan08.qxd 5/12/08 10:38 AM Page 2 Mount V Who’s that Member? Each month, the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce will randomly select a member to feature. This is a great way to get to know some of the diverse and interesting businesses in our community. PROForma Seven years ago, Bob Lama set out to own his own business to focus on the graphic communications and marketing needs of businesses in the Skagit Valley. Primarily a customer service business, Bob and his wife Maureen sell printing, logoed apparel, promotional products, business forms and “anything that will sit still long enough to be printed!” said Maureen. Bob and Maureen know the importance of advertising and quality printing. “Bob has always working in newspapers, printing and sales... PROforma was a nice fit.” Being able to wear your logo on your t-shirt, sport your mission on your coffee cup, or give away pens with your business name and address creates those precious marketing impressions that keep your customers and potential customers aware and reminded of you. PROforma can help you to create quality marketing pieces for any purpose. Bob and Maureen take a very com- munity-oriented approach to their business. “We are unique in that we get to choose both our vendors and our customers,” said Maureen. This makes it possible for them to work with some of the best companies in the printing business and the best companies in Skagit County. PROforma is involved in several Skagit County Chambers, and Bob and Maureen are involved with United Way, Children’s Hospital Guild, Burlington Soroptimists, and the Amateur Softball Association. For all your printing and promotional product needs, contact Bob and Maureen Lama with PROforma at 360-848-7714. Maureen and Bob Lama of PROForma. Book of the Month Each month, the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce scouts a book to help you improve your business and work life. These books are available for loan at the Chamber office to all Chamber members. Take time to read and learn! Words That Work by Dr. Frank Luntz The nation’s premier communications expert shares his wisdom on how the words we choose can change the course of business, of politics, and of life in this country In Words That Work, Luntz offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the tactical use of words and phrases affects what we buy, who we vote for, and even what we believe in. With chapters like “The Ten Rules of Successful Communication” and “The 21 Words and Phrases for the 21st Century,” he examines how choosing the right words is essential. Nobody is in a better position to explain than Frank Luntz: He has used two his knowledge of words to help more than two dozen Fortune 500 companies grow. He’ll tell us why Rupert Murdoch’s six-billion-dollar decision to buy DirectTV was smart because satellite was more cutting edge than “digital cable,” and why pharmaceutical companies transitioned their message from “treatment” to “prevention” and “wellness.” If you ever wanted to learn how to talk your way out of a traffic ticket or talk your way into a raise, this book’s for you. Chamber Chat News ChamberChatJan08.qxd 5/12/08 10:38 AM Page 3 nt Vernon Downtown News – Christmas Season The Christmas season proved to be fun and eventful for downtown. It was started off by a great Christmas parade and tree lighting. Newly purchased lights adorned all the trees and old fashioned light poles. The “Shop ‘Till You Drop” night was held the first week of December and the first annual “Grand Christmas Decorating Contest” took place between stores. The winners were “Best Store Front/Window” went to Dilly Dally Antiques and the “Best Tree” went to WildFibers. Next on the agenda is the Tulip Festival Street Fair and the new board will be working on some new events for this year. Small Business Education Join Skagit Young Professionals for a Rockin’ Good Time! The Skagit Young Professionals will tackle the mechanical bull and do sumo wrestling (in air-filled sumo suits) at Tazer Valley Farms in Stanwood on February 7th from 6 to 8 pm, sponsored by Air Play Party Rentals! We’ll meet at continued from page 1 1) Obviously, the layout of the ad is not at its best. To catch a reader’s eye, there must be considerations of size, placement, color usage, fonts, visuals, and text, and how they all fit together to be balanced, aesthetically pleasing and enticing. 2) Almost every single ad needs a potent headline. The business name rarely does the trick, but it is most often used stretched across the top of the paid space. The headline must speak to the reader. It can be in the form of a statement, an exclamation, a question, even a single word. Its purpose is to gain attention, touch an emotion, and evoke some kind of response. I often tell the story that if you are going to spend 10 hours creating an advertisement, spend 9 hours coming up with a good headline. 3) Too often, there has been no homework beforehand. To create effective ads, know your targeted markets- inside and out: those markets most likely to purchase your product or service. Your ad must talk to them. People buy a product or service for two reasons only: it solves a problem or it satisfies a desire. One of these attributes must be met within the ad. To be able to convey this with accuracy and conviction, you have to pinpoint exactly who you are speaking to. You want to touch that hot button of purchase behavior! 5:30 at the Skagit Transit Station to carpool. If you would like to meet us there, Tazer Valley Farm is located at 7314 300th St NW in Stanwood. Take Exit #215 from I-5 and head west. What are they up to? What are they saying in their advertisements and marketing materials? How can you be different? 5) The more specific it is, the better the ad. In it, talk about what is best about you, your company, your product or service. Trying to include too many items or ideas in an ad can detract from it and can sometimes cause buyer confusion. 6) Last, but not least, place your ad where it will be seen by your targeted market. A good ad in the wrong medium is a waste of money and opportunity. No matter what kind of discount you may finagle from the sales rep, you’re not hitting your target. These are six powerful rules that will contribute measurable successes to your advertising endeavors, and to all of your marketing materials. You can create ads with a focused return on investment when you grasp the two main premises above: The ‘how’ of designing the ads, and the ‘why’ of what is behind them. Then you’re on your way to more profitable advertising. Jane Atherton is the owner of ADditude Creative Marketing and Remember Me Business Cards. She will be teaching a 2-part class called “Creating Advertising that Works” at Skagit Community College Business Resource Center on March 13th and 20th. In marketing academia, there is a mantra that goes, “it takes at least seven impressions to make a consumer take notice.” That means that you have to get your business in front of a person at least seven times before they will remember you and what you are selling! The Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce Biz Buzz on January 23rd at 11:30 am at the Best Western CottonTree Inn is a great way to get your message to other chamber members. Join us for speednetworking and make one of those seven impressions! Put one in your car and keep one at your desk, it’s indispensable! Chamber Kicks off New After-Hours The Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to continually improving our events, programs, and processes. Business After Hours are common occurrences here in Skagit County, but we think they can be better than just the hum-drum, ho-hum social hour once a month. In fact, we are using the after hours events to show you how you can be connected to everyone in the County in less than six degrees! Have you ever played the “less than six degrees of Kevin Bacon” game? You know, where you try to six connect any actor or actress to Kevin Bacon by way of “connections” or relationships with other actors and actresses? Well, we want to show you how you can be connected to anyone in Skagit County in less than six degrees (probably a lot less) as well! If you attended the January 10th after hours event at Dick’s Restaurant Supply, then you know that finding out your degrees of connection with everyone else is a great way to find new customers and make new contacts in the business world. Don’t be shy! It’s your network—get connected!
