Editors Notes:
I have received a request for a story on the Pepsi bottling plant
codes, unfortunately I do not know them nor do I know where to find
this information. Anyone know this information? If so please send it
to me and I will publish it. If you happen to know the Coca Cola
codes send those in too.
Our two scheduled shows are rapidly approaching and I would encourage you all to attend 1 if not both of these shows. New cans keep
popping up all the time, so you never know what will show up. If you
plan to attend the show at on August 12 at Gene Judd’s home please
let him know so he has some kind of idea on how many people are
planning to attend.
Letter to the Editor
I have a question for the readers of the Can– o– Gram. I would like
information on the Mall of America Ecommunity bank top cans. Is
1993 the 1st year that Pepsi came out with the Ecommunity can? Also
is the latest issue that I have is 2001 was this the last year they were
produced or are there more? Geff Moore
Editors comments: Anyone with information please contact Geff or
myself and I will print the answer in the next issue.

The Story behind Green River
The Green Rivers are flowing again at restaurants and other retail locations in the Midwest. Green River soda hit it's stride about the same
time as Prohibition, when the bright green lime flavored soft drink was produced by a Chicago Brewery and sold at soda fountains throughout the
Country.
Green River soda was introduced to Midwestern
drinkers in 1919, just as Congress was passing the
18th Amendment establishing Prohibition. When
Prohibition officially went into affect on January
16, 1920, some breweries turned to
making a nonalcoholic drink call
Near Beer, while others were
churning out ice cream. The
Schoenhofen Edelweiss Brewing
Company of Chicago turned to Green River. The soda
was poured into old beer bottles and sold in the market. It was an immediate hit. The soft drink was so
popular that Al Jolson recorded a song written about
Green River.
By the end of Prohibition on December 5, 1933, Green
River trailed only Coke in fountain sales throughout
the Midwest. However, after Prohibition the brewery made Green
River a second priority and sales
dropped. In 1950 the brewery went broke.
In 1992 after a raft of owners, the 73 year old
brand was alive only in Seattle. Now Green River
is on the rise again. Clover Club Bottling Co., Inc.
an 85 year old company, with partners, Ed Kennelly and Joe Troy, bought the brand and are expanding its bottler network. The company has its
own trucks, distributing in (4) counties around

20 Years Ago in the Can o Gram
Volume 13, Number 6, June 1986
An article introduced the readers to two new colas; Jolt and Soul.
At the time Jolt was only available in Rochester NY and Soul was
available in Chicago.
Former NPCC member Warren Hardaker introduced us to the
C&C Batter Up Pancake Syrup 9 ounce cone top can, and
also proposed a idea to have a soda can of the year
award. Was this ever done?
In the Collectively Speaking (which is a meet your
fellow collector type of column) was the fact that Carr
was the owner of a Astro Cola, which at the time was
thought to be the only example known to exist.
Souvenir Liberty Cans Salute Immigrants, Statue was
the title of an article introducing the 24 can Coca Cola
Statue of Liberty Commemorative cans. Seven Coca
Cola products sported these labels; Coca Cola Classic,
Cherry Coke, Caffeine Free Coke, Tab, Caffeine free Tab
and Sprite. The set featured 24 different countries, and
provided immigration facts related to each country, plus
facts about the Statue of Liberty or Ellis Island.
This issues commemorative corner featured the little known and
often over looked soda can set Waist Watchers. There were two different sets available at the time, set one had 6 cans and featured the British American logo on the front, while set 2 had 7 flavors and no British American logo. There were rumors of additional flavors.
Want ads numbered 25, with current NPCC members, Robert Russell, Maryland Ousley and Dave Brackett each placing ads.

20 Years Ago in the Can o Gram
Volume 13, Number 7, July 1986
The International Insight column returned in this issue and featured
cans from Japan. American brands included Coca Cola, Bireleys and
of all things Yoo Hoo.
Current NPCC member John Hantz penned an article on The Children's Miracle Network Telethon
Cans. The article mention 2 different Coca Cola
banks, 2 Pepsi banks and a 7 UP bank.
The Coca Cola 1984 Olympics Sets were in the
Spotlight column. These cans featured Sam the Eagle
in different activities corresponding to Olympic
events.
The Soda Mart presented the Can Tote in a 2 page
spread. Price at the time was $20 for a set of 3. Editors Note: I am not sure if this was the introduction or
if the Can Tote had been around for awhile. Anyone know?
The latest discoveries listed 7 Pepsi product cans with the 12 Pack
line at the top of the can, Americola and Hawaii’s Own brand also appeared.
A humorous article titled “A Note to Non—Southerners: Ask For a
Co-coler” was submitted by current NPCC member Geff Moore. The
article was a suggestion to non southerners on the proper way to ask
for a soft drink. Apparently all the years us Northerners spent asking
for a POP or SODA when getting a soft drink was wrong. We should
have been asking for a Coke or a Co-Coler.
Other articles included a Dumping Column, a NPCC contest was
announced, a very nice article on Gray’s Beverage Company of Wisconsin, Chapter Updates, a Update to the Liberty set that was in the
June 1986 issue and a One for the Road column.
This issue only contained 9 want ads, with current NPCC member
John Hantz looking for special issues.

Dr Phillips Surfaces
Recently another Dr Phillips Florida Fruit Juice low profile 6 ounce
cone top can surfaced on Ebay selling for $500. This example had the
cap attached so the mystery
behind what “Florida Fruit
Juice” was has finally been
solved. And what is “Florida
Fruit Juice”? The cap identified it as Grapefruit Juice. I
suspect that Orange Juice may
also have been put into this
same can.

Chicagoland, and has distributors in (4) states at present. This year
Kennelly and Troy, both of whom have 30 + years in the soft drink
industry, hope to sign (20) additional distributors and double their distribution. Green River is available in 2 Liters, 1 Liter, 20 oz, cans, 12
oz bottles and postmix. A diet version is also available.
So why is Green River coming back now? According to Kennelly
"There is no other flavor like it on the market, and it has visual appeal
with its bright green color. The brand takes people back to a pleasant
time in their life, in the 1950's and 1960's - a time of corner soda fountains and drive-in movies. At first only the old timers were buying, but
now everyone is. We get (50 to 60) calls a week from all over the
Country from people looking to buy Green River".
Clover Club Bottling Co., Inc. also manufactures and
distributes Jolt Cola, Berghoff Root Beer, Goose Island Root Beer, Clover Classic Cream Drinks, and
Blu Botol Water, in bottles and cans.
Editors Comments: This history is not nearly complete, it doesn’t even mention when Green River
started to can other flavors. But it is all that I could
find about the brand on the internet. Anyone have
more detailed information?
