This consolidated report presents donations to the school, and Friends of Father Judge High School, Inc. for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2013; and to the Alumni Association for the calendar year ended December 31, 2013. Also, we are proud to rename this publication the Judge CONQUEST Magazine, using the title of the newsletter for more than thirty years. ON THE COVER: The much anticipated STEM Center opened to students in January 2014, and is in use every school day. 2 Father Judge High School From the President-The Transformation Dear Alumni & Friends, Lately the question I am asked most often is, “Is Judge going private?” Many believe we now operate like a private school. This is true. Our school operates much differently than a traditional Catholic school. Due to our success we have been given the freedom to operate like a college prep or private school; but we are still a part of the Archdiocesan school system. The good news is we are now recognized by our families and students as a private school but keeping our tuition cost at a Diocesan price tag. For instance, La Salle is $20,000, Holy Ghost Prep is $19,000 and most other private schools are way over $20,000. Our tuition for the 2014-2015 school year is $6,450. Neither other archdiocesan high schools, nor some of the private schools, have the opportunities, facilities and programs that we have. Our Board of Advisors, Administration and Strategic Planning Committee have transformed our school into one that is now considered one of the most innovative and progressive schools in our state. We have transformed our building, programs, academic initiatives, athletics, activities, and even the way we manage our school. We are now set apart from all other schools and are seen as a school of great value. So, how have we transformed our school and what sets us apart from all the other high schools? First, we transformed our governing model. A few years ago Advisory Board Chair, William St. Clair ’75 approved a new model of governance that resembles a college. The Oblates assigned Rev. James Dalton, OSFS ’62, former President of Salesianum High School, a private school in Wilmington, Delaware. Father Dalton has transformed our curriculum, including more technology to improve our educational programs. We saw a measurable increase in our SAT scores and student achievements. I recruited Patrick McGonigal ’81, who retired after a very successful career in business, to serve as Chief Financial Officer, and use a business model for our financial controls. Pat is generously volunteering his time in this new role. We hired Brian King ’97, first as Director of Advancement, and now including Operations. Brian has transformed the way we communicate to our alumni, using social media, Internet blasts and solicitations, and the latest database management. Our annual giving has increased because of these new efforts. He helped to transform our campus when he managed the project to renew the athletic fields at Ramp Playground, and now we serve our students in a college-like campus. We hired James Lynch as full-time Athletic Director. Jim oversees all aspects of athletics and has initiated a new Health and Wellness Program for all students. He will oversee any new department plans and be responsible for our existing athletic facilities. We recently hired Mark Gudas ’88 as Admissions Director, and developed a new team model for recruitment. My President’s Advisory Board is 40 persons strong, and includes some of the most respected leaders in our city. This Board is led by an Executive Committee of 12 members, who advise and support me in all aspects of decision-making. The Board established nine subcommittees made up of alumni, teachers, board members and community leaders. These committees are: Athletics, Building, Finance, STEM, Brisson Center, Development, Technology, Education and Admissions/Marketing. Through the board and these committees we’ve developed partnerships with the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, Holy Family University and DeSales University; and we are pursuing three more. This new governance has allowed us to truly transform our school. We are the only Catholic high school to have a STEM Center. This program and laboratory enable our students to achieve higher academic success. Robotics will be a part of our curriculum next year and our Robotics Center will provide afterschool activity and the opportunity to compete in national fairs. We’ve installed the latest technology in the TV Studio, which allows students to participate in all aspects of television and communications. And, every classroom is wired and WiFi enabled to operate our SmartBoards, Apple TVs, iPads, and mobile devices. All of these in-school improvements are complemented by other campus transformations. The Oblate faculty house includes offices for the President, Operations, Development, Friends of Father Judge High School, Inc., and a boardroom. The new Robotics Center is there, too. Across the street we’ve transformed the dust bowl that was Ramp Playground into professional athletic competition fields, just like the pros use. All of this isn’t going unnoticed. The new CEO for Catholic Education recently recognized us as a model for our initiatives. Yet, all this transformation comes with our continued commitment to our mission, to provide a climate of academic excellence… rooted in the spirituality of St. Francis de Sales… educating the young man spiritually, intellectually, physically, emotionally and socially in the Catholic tradition. We are blessed to be the only boys school still administered by a religious order. Eight Oblates are present every day to reinforce that mission. ADMINISTRATION AND BOARD Rev. S cience, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education programs have been a main stay at many universities and colleges for many years, and across the nation. Yet, research continues to show that the US lacks a strong pipeline of future workers in STEM fields and that US high school students continue to lag behind those in other highly technological nations. The federal government recognizes that STEM programs at the high school and elementary school levels are needed. They prepare students and teachers for careers in the fields of science and technology. This past year, Father Judge embarked on an effort to establish a foundation and infrastructure to consolidate existing science and technology programs and launch a focused initiative on STEM curriculum and development. This started with Father Campellone’s formation of a STEM Committee, teachers, administrators and external experts, to develop and drive a 5-year strategic plan. The first year focused on the construction of a Resource Center that would be the central lynchpin for STEM teaching and learning. With funds from Friends of Father Judge High School, Inc. and an education grant from Dow Chemical, two existing rooms were identified for renovation and exclusive use. It was vitally important to have an environment for students that would enable innovation and creativity. Through the dedication of many alumni who contributed their time and trades expertise, the STEM center was completed during the first semester of the 2013-2014 school year. It is equipped with the proper hardware, soft- Father Joe addresses archdiocesan guests, board members and Judge personnel at the dedication of the STEM Center in January. The STEM Resource Center was recently dedicated and was incorporated into the second semester curriculum. It is open to all students. The existing curriculum is being modified to include STEM activities, and these activities will cross all grade and track levels. Formal and informal exercises include hands-on experiential learning in the Center. They provide an investigative approach to problem solving for all science and mathematics classes. Other academic departments will use the Center for teaching how STEM affects all aspects of learning. Presently, we have a commitment for 36 iPads for the Center. Current programs like robotics, electro-spinning, and atomic force microscope imaging will be integrated into the curriculum. This program will allow us to leverage our existing relationships with ETC (Nastar) and Drexel University, and we will look to extend our outreach to feeder schools, initiating STEM learning at the elementary level. We presented our commitment to STEM education to the Office of Catholic Education (OCE) and our faculty members. Both have been very enthusiastic and receptive to our efforts to establish the program. Teacher buy-in and ownership are critical to the sustainability and success of STEM and six teachers have already prepared themselves via faculty training this past June. Ongoing, professional development of teachers is a vital part of the 5-year plan. Dwyer, Theology Department Chair Last summer, I was privileged to join 17 Catholic educators from across the United States traveling to Israel on the ninth annual Anti-Defamation League (ADL) Bearing Witness Advanced Interfaith Mission. We were selected from teachers who had completed the Bearing Witness Program, which I had participated in at Daylesford Abbey in Paoli, PA. The ADL began Bearing Witness in 1996 in order to assist the Catholic Church in its commitment to deepen mutual understanding and respect between Jews and Christians. The Bearing Witness Advanced Program, begun in 2005, provides an intensive course of study on anti-Semitism, anti-Zionism, the Holocaust and Catholic-Jewish relations. Participants deepen their understanding of the Jewish connection to Israel, modern Israeli politics, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. After two days of training at the Anti-Defamation League headquarters in New York City, we departed for Tel Aviv. Our first day included an orientation dinner with Jerusalem Post political affairs correspondent Gil Hoffman. Then, we met with Ibrahim Abu Shindi, executive director of the Arab-Jewish Community Center in Jaffa. I had no idea that these interfaith community centers existed in Israel. Their work is essential to the peace process as they help children to overcome stereotypes, respect differences, and forge lasting friendships. We also met with several scholars and politicians focusing on national security issues. Upon arrival in Jerusalem, we had breakfast with Abe Foxman, the national Director of the ADL. We then visited with the papal nuncio Archbishop Giuseppe Lazarotto, the apostolic delegate to Jerusalem and Palestine. As we toured the Old City, we followed the Via Dolorosa to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre where we had a chance to Sea of Galilee Arab-Jewish Community Center, Jaffa light candles and pray. At the Western Wall we deposited prayers for family and friends before celebrating Shabbat with a very hospitable Jewish family. We returned later to do a midnight tunnel tour of the Western Wall. Heading south to Masada, we arrived for an early morning excursion that was beautiful but incredibly hot. Kalia Beach on the Dead Sea was next, where everyone floats and covers themselves with the abundant cosmetic mud. Our visit to Yad Vashem, Israel’s national memorial to the Shoah, included moving Holocaust survivor testimony. We passed through a security checkpoint into the West Bank for a grotto Mass at Shepherd’s Field in Beit Sahour near Bethlehem. Our many conferences included Palestinian political advisor Elias Zananiri, Ethiopian Jew Danny Sahalo, Israeli National Police Sergeant Major Ronit Tubul who was injured in a terrorist bus attack, and Catholic educator Soad Hadad who radiated peace as she talked about the essential role of prayer. A tour of the security fence led us north to Alfe Menashe, a settlement in the Golan Heights where we had lunch with a gracious family. Climbing Mount Bental in the Golan, we could see plumes of smoke and hear explosions coming from Syria. In Beit Jaan on Mount Meron in the far north of Israel, we met Druze Sheikh and high school principal Jamil Hattib who shared his experience as an Arabic speaking religious minority in Israel. My favorite area was the Galilee, which includes the Mount of the Beatitudes, Capernaum, Nazareth and Tabgha. We stayed in a kibbutz hotel on the Sea of Galilee and had a Mass at the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth. I will never hear the Gospel the same way again after experiencing the land that Jesus called home. The respect that the ADL demonstrates for the role of Catholic educators was overwhelming. We were exposed to a wide range of perspectives and honest discussion on many complex issues as we travelled through Israel and the Palestinian territories. The interfaith dialogue and relationship building among Jews, Christians, Muslims and Druze that are occurring in Israel were my best discovery. I pray each day with the psalmist, “Peace be upon Israel and upon all of the people of the Middle East.” Mount Bental, Golan Heights 6 Father Judge High School MIKE MCKAY ’76 RETURNS AS HEAD FOOTBALL COACH It had been a long time since I had driven my car up that driveway entrance to the parking lot behind the school. Immediately upon doing so, on the day of my first interview for the head football coaching job, the memories of so many things began to run through my head. Things like friends, teachers, special moments, relationships that were built, and all the games and experiences surfaced in my mind. Everything pretty much looked the same. Although there was that Mitchell Center I had heard about. I thought “wow” how nice would that have been way back when. There were so many of us using that one universal machine. Anyway, while walking the parking lot and the hallway in school waiting for my turn to interview, those memories brought about a sense I began to feel that this was something very special. I was attempting to become part of the school and program that had given me so much. The place that I hadn’t had a chance to give back to. And now I had a chance at that opportunity. As it turned out, that chance became a reality. That Sunday night and Monday afternoon in April I will never forget. Meeting with Father Campellone and Father Dalton, being introduced and addressing the team was the beginning of something I could have SOCCER PCL CHAMPS by Joe Hanson ’14 and Ryan Nork ’14 Coach John Dunlop with Joe Hanson (named All-American midfielder) and Ryan Nork. only dreamed about. It was happening. At the place I played for and graduated from. The emotion of the entire process came into play during the team meet with the players, when Coach ’Whitey’ Sullivan came walking through the doors in my view. It took a lot of energy not to breakdown during a 10 second pause as I had to stop myself from speaking. The flash of more memories came to light during those 10 seconds. Incredible! Feelings surfaced of what Coach meant to me, how he mentored me, guided me, taught me along our path and the times we shared here at Judge. The practices, the games, the specific plays, my teammates and that final second of a championship! That pause was a very special moment. It was real. I realized then that I had the chance to do for others what Coach and Father Judge had done for me and numerous other alumni. This job was special. The parking lot and hallways were not so empty on my first day back. Running into ‘Huck’, ‘Duck’, ‘Kochie’, Brother Jim, and ‘Coach Derm’ my baseball Head Coach and mentor who guided me, trusted me and shared similar special moments and a championship during our time at Judge along with numerous other staff and administration personnel, surfaced more past experiences and friendships like it was yesterday. I felt so proud introducing the staff I was bringing with me to everyone at Judge. I didn’t have to talk Judge up anymore. My staff could see first-hand the bond, the relationships and the character of the people and the type of school I was bringing them around. Moving through this season, the support of everyone from the board, administration, staff, team, and parents has been nothing short of outstanding. I cannot thank everyone enough! As I continue to work at my job with all the effort and commitment possible, each day has brought new challenges, rewarding moments, and new experiences. Coming back to campus allows me and the staff an opportunity to help assist today’s student-athletes in their growth and development for future life endeavors. Coming back to campus and blending the past and the present allow our young men the best possibility for success. Have you ever imagined the feeling of winning a Catholic League Championship? After beating Lansdale Catholic 3-1 on October 29, 2013, we made history. Winning this extremely important game completed one of our life’s goals, becoming a PCL champion, but furthermore, we became Crusader Champions. We came into training camp with high expectations. After a 5-1 loss in our first scrimmage we realized that a championship wasn’t going to be handed to us, we had to work extremely hard to get there. We responded well to that loss with several wins leading up to the highly anticipated game with defending champion, LaSalle. Our team saw this game as a true test of our talent, and a chance to give them some payback, after losing the championship to them the past two years. After beating La Salle we knew we had what it takes to win the title. The 14 returning seniors knew we had only one more chance to bring home the PCL title. We had talked about this season and the championship game on Archbishop Ryan’s field since we were all in grade school. During our four years the 14 seniors and the underclassmen bonded and became very close, like a family. We saw each other as brothers and would go into any type of battle to help each other. Winning the PCL Championship brought tears to our eyes, and we went around hugging each other shouting “We Did It” with grins on each of our faces. We couldn’t have done it without the support of our awesome fans from the faculty, students, alumni, and most importantly our friends and family. As we were rolling through the beginning of the season, starting out the regular season 16-0, we acquired many fans that followed us to each game. Although we had a heartbreaking loss in the first round of states, the season was still a success. We were crowned both PCL Champs and District 12 City Champs. After the loss to West Chester Rustin we were devastated, knowing that we will no longer have practice after school, have games under the lights at Ramp Complex, and worst of all, knowing we will never wear our Judge uniforms in a game again. As disappointed as we were, our coaches were there to pick us up. Words cannot describe how much our coaches did for us throughout our four-year careers. We are especially thankful to have a head coach like Coach Dunlop, who would do anything for his players. He is one of the best coaches we ever had and we will always be thankful to have played for him. Conquest Magazine 7 college days at Villanova and his world travels in the military. Once again, this premier Friends of Father Judge High School, Inc. event was a smashing success. Seven distinguished graduates and an affiliated church pastor were recognized for their unique talents, personal successes and valuable contributions to Father Judge. Following categories established in 1997 the inductees included: Patrick A. Cummings ’68 (Alumni Award); Thomas B. Fenerty ’66 (Science Award); Very Rev. James J. Greenfield OSFS, ’79 (Salesian Award); H. Richard Haverstick, Jr. ’70 (Business Award); James J. Kirlin, Jr. ’65 (Veterans Advocate Award); Rev. Msgr. Charles E. McGroarty (Red & Blue Award); John J. Mitchell ’57 (Service Award); and Philip T. Roche ’69 (Crusader Award). As in the past, the evening began with cocktails and meet-and-greet opportunities. Family members and guests accompanied the honorees and had time to socialize with the Father Judge community. Teachers, graduates and a number of Oblates attended to see Ed Costello ’66 open the evening with remarks and guide the program throughout the night. Fathers Joseph Campellone, President and James Dalton, Principal, greeted each honoree for recognition and conferred the prized Hall of Fame medallion. Father Campellone presented the Crusader Award crystal trophy, the highest honor of the school, to Phil Roche, as the last honoree. During the program we heard wonderful acceptance remarks. First honoree, Pat Cummings, referred to his Judge days affectionately, when describing how they prepared him for his Volunteer work included working for the Boy Scouts of America as a Deputy Commissioner. The Salesian Award was appropriately conferred to Very Rev. James J. Greenfield, OSFS. The youngest of the honorees, Father Greenfield has worked in province administrations since 2008 and presently serves as Provincial for the Wilmington-Philadelphia Province, and serves as Chairman of the Board of Salesianum School and Nativity Preparatory School, both in Wilmington. In addition to his priestly and administrative duties, Father Greenfield earned a Doctorate in Human Development from George Washington University, and served there as an instructor. The Philadelphia business community 3 is well aware of Rich Haverstick, who was presented the Business Award. Serving as a partner since 1987 in Ernst and Young, the global accounting firm, Rich rose to Managing Partner of the Philadelphia area office in 1999, and continued in that role until 2008. Rich also volunteered as Chair of the Temple University Fox School Accounting Advisory Board, and Temple honored him as “Outstanding Alumnus” in 2000, and once again in 2006 for induction into the Fox School’s Gallery of Success. Rich is an active member of the Chamber of Commerce, Council for Growth, Penjerdel Council, Philadelphia First Corporation, and the A. Hamilton Circle of the Philadelphia Bar. In 1988 he was elected president of the 6,500 member local chapter of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants. 10 2 1 9 4 11 1. John worked as a technical writer with Philco Ford and then as a Recreation supervisor for the City of Philadelphia. In 1975 John established Mitchell Instruments and soon after moved the family and firm to California, where he continued until selling it and retiring in 1998. Today John manages his real estate holdings, is still active, and happily retired. Many in the room were pleased to see Rev. Monsignor Charles McGroarty honored with the Red & Blue Award. As Pastor at St. Matthew parish for more than twenty-five years, Monsignor has had a 14 great impact in Northeast Philadelphia. A staunch supporter of Catholic education, he manages the largest elementary school in the city, serves on multiple high school boards, including Father Judge, and is a respected member of the archdiocesan priest community. His own high school teaching experiences led to studies in Rome and multiple archdiocesan and statewide Director positions. Always an advocate for family life, he served the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference, and the Governors White House Conference on Families. Monsignor has numerous awards for his services, in- cluding the Distinguished Pastor Award from the NCEA, and the Presidential Award from Holy Family University. The award program concluded with the Crusader Award presented to Phil Roche. A 1969 grad, Phil is well known and respected as a dedicated teacher at Judge for the past forty years. Yet, his time and reputation in the classroom is easily matched by his time as a coach. A rower himself while a student, Phil started coaching the crew team in 1969 and has served as U.S. National Junior Team Coach for the World Championships. He has coached Olympi- ans and others at the college level, and was named Schuylkill Navy Coach of the Year in 2007. The Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association awarded him the Brennan Trophy as Coach of the year in 2011, and he continues today as a teacher, crew advocate and coach. Many former students and members of crew attended in his honor. Kevin Kilkenny, co-chair, concluded the evening with various thank you remarks and sponsor recognitions. Conquest Magazine11 SPOTLIGHT: NOTABLE ALUMNI OF FATHER JUDGE HIGH SCHOOL OUR HONORED GUEST: CHARLES JARVIS, CLASS OF 1965 by Michael W. Ziegler ‘73 In this, the second of a remarkable series of interviews with Judge graduates who went on to attend West Point, I had the opportunity to talk with a legend. To use such a term about this former Crusader is not an exaggeration by any means. Charlie Jarvis was once the subject of a quote by former New York Giants football coach Bill Parcells, who spoke of Jarvis as “the best football player he has ever seen.” Now that is one of the highest tributes I can think of when it comes to gridiron excellence. Mr. Jarvis was a football wonder at the running back position. In the 1968 season at West Point he ran for 1,110 yards. In that year, he ran for a remarkable 253 yards against Boston College. During his period of service at West Point he guided the Black Knights to a 23-5 record. He ranks fifth on the list of all-time rushers at Army, with 2,334 yards. During his four years the team earned several post season appearances, including the Sugar Bowl. He left West Point as a Second Lieutenant, as every other graduate, but he did tell me something that is not generally known. In 1970, the cadets received not only their education, housing, etc. but a stipend of one hundred and forty dollars per month in compensatory “army” pay. He also remarked in passing, that it was somewhat more of a struggle for him when compared to our other featured candidate, Jude Cooke ’06. Mr. Jarvis knows Jude, and praised him for his success while attending West Point. Now you would think that a man who had such a successful career on the playing field would note some event of that time as fatherjudge.com friendsoffatherjudge.com 12 Father Judge High School one of the best in his memory, but Jarvis said that one of the highlights of his life was when he played football for Judge, and they won their first-ever city football championship in 1964! I asked why this, of all things, had left such an impression. He expressed, with deep feeling, that since the early days of development of the football program, Judge had not been among the elite, and were not respected as competitors. When they won in 1964 it was more than just winning, it meant that feeling you get in your heart, when a long hard effort of climbing finally reaches the top and receives the respect that has so long eluded past participants. Charlie said. “It was a great time to be a young man.” To Mr. Jarvis, “the 50s was a great decade to grow up in America, and the early 60s was a great time to be a student at Father Judge.” I asked Charlie about his days as a student, and in particular, what if anything influenced his life the most in his time at Father Judge? He replied that he was very thankful for the Oblates. He was particularly interested in Spanish and took three years of language courses. He admired every coach who ever taught at the school, and for Mr. Jarvis there were multiple expressions of appreciation. He joined the football team, the basketball team, and in his senior year, played shortstop for the baseball team! This was quite an impressive group of activities. Mr. Jarvis spent a bit of time speaking of his college preparatory courses while at Judge, with average selections mixed in with higher track courses. He liked mathematics, and credits Father Carlin as a strong influence on his development. Did he have any regrets? Only that he blames himself for the only two days he ever received JUG. If he could, he would apologize for what he now claims as silly behavior that caused Father Rickert some consternation, acting up in a slapping contest with another student while class was in progress. “I disturbed the poor guy from his teaching, it was a really juvenile thing to do.” After West Point and military service, Charlie Jarvis went on to a successful career in financial services. His positions involved managing union investments, and various pension plans, including the City of Philadelphia, dealing with over $50 million in accounts. His time was not spent on the floor of Wall Street in New York City as some may think, as much as in being on the move from one area to another. He has traveled considerably, and continues as an advisor in a lighter capacity. Mr. Charles Jarvis is a special individual. His talents and his drive to be the best athlete that he could possibly be, has earned him the respect and recognition of his peers. He stands for all that our Salesian Oblates have taught us over the years. HOW DO I NOMINATE SOMEONE FOR THE FATHER JUDGE HALL OF FAME? You can enter someone for induction into the Father Judge Hall of Fame at anytime on our website. Simply go to www.fatherjudge.com and click the Alumni icon at the top. When you arrive at the alumni page there is a menu bar on the left – select Hall of Fame Nominations and simply follow the instructions to complete the nomination online. Our second notable grad focuses on students whose personalities and dedication were forged through the salesian spirit during their time at Father Judge High School, and refined by fire, through their excellent training at West Point. I had the opportunity to reminisce recently with a well-known graduate of the class of 2006, Jude Cooke, about our favorite memories of Father Judge, and specifically the small, but special ones that we always carry with us, residing within pleasant thoughts that produce a smile no matter how distant they may be. My first concern of course, was my fanatical interest in football. For Jude was a part of an era at Father Judge much different than my own, and winning ways were not preponderate during my tenure there. So, I dared to ask if he was a part of a winning team. Jude was indeed a part of a winning tradition that culminated in a playoff appearance wherein they defeated our ancient rival, Roman Catholic. He expressed the usual satisfaction, as all Judge Football players recall on Thanksgiving Day, of beating our neighboring public school rivals, Lincoln High School, as among the most satisfying victories year by year. When I told him in my year I and a group of friends from our lunch table attended every game but one, the last conflict of the year against North Catholic. We had been witnesses to nine straight losses, but our team won the last game. “You guys must have been a bad luck charm” Jude replied. After we got over laughing about football foibles, I brought our subject to focus on the years at Father Judge, and what did he feel was of importance in rounding out his personality. He said that “Discipline & Work ethic” were two things that he thought were of the most value. Now the word “discipline” always meant something special to Father Judge Students, but what Jude was alluding to was the organizational skills taught at Judge that prepared him well to handle his future experiences at West Point. He claims that these features at Judge made the transition to duty and responsibility at the military academy easier by comparison to others that he witnessed coming from other schools. Jude concentrated on business courses while he was a student. He was very grateful for the business courses that were available and carried as much of a workload as he could while he was a student here. This training contributed to a very successful time at West Point, where Jude was in the top echelon of rank in class. I asked “What was his favorite course selection over the years?” There was no need to spend time thinking about it, “Economics” he replied. I agreed; this was my favorite course as well. We arrived at the question of favorite instructor. Jude noted Father Killion and notable moments by Mark Adelsberger in a particular seminar, but Father Judge has such a tradition, that experiences of one generation can be handed down to another, by virtue of a well tenured staff. In this case, we had a mutual admiration for Mr. Edward Mooney, our instructor in American Literature. “Did he still cover Julius Caesar?” I asked. Jude replied, “Are SPOTLIGHT: NOTABLE ALUMNI OF FATHER JUDGE HIGH SCHOOL OUR HONORED GUEST: JUDE COOKE, CLASS OF 2006 by Michael W. Ziegler ‘73 you kidding? I actually played the role of Cassius!” He also fondly remembered, as I always have, the large size model of the Globe Theater that Mr. Mooney brought into the classroom to show students how it was constructed and how stage operations were managed. It is amazing to think that all those years later, students are impressed in the same way. Jude, by virtue of his army career, is a veteran of Iraq. It has always been somewhat of a mystery to me about how forces maneuvered in the desert conditions present in Iraq. After all, in my time, the Vietnam War was still in progress and it was a completely different environment in that era. Jude said that your typical patrol was more of a type that would venture out to reported areas where enemy forces were operating, and information was often based on intelligence gathered from locals who would provide details for the benefit of our units. This type of recon mission was no doubt very dangerous, but it is in situations of this nature that the training under discipline and work ethics pays off! Father Judge High School has a tradition of humble service in many walks of life, but when we see fellow alumni such as Jude Cooke, we realize that the term present on the side of our graduation rings, “non-excidet”, has its best representation reflected in this West Point professional, and we can look to the future with confidence that we are in good and capable hands. Conquest Magazine 13 STEERING COMMITTEE CONTINUES FORMULATING THE PLAN MY TRIBUTE TO BILLY K by Ed Sullivan ’71 by Pat McGonigal ’81, Chief Financial Officer There are a number of familiar quotes on the topic of planning. Perhaps you’ve heard one or more of these: ab “Nobody plans to fail, but many fail to plan” “Plan the work. Work the plan” “Plans are useless, but planning is priceless” ab s 2012 drew to a close, Father Joe Campellone and the Father Judge leadership embarked on a strategic planning process with several goals in mind: To establish a baseline for where we are as an organization in all aspects of performance; To create a vision for where we want Father Judge to be in the future; To distill that vision into achievable action items and specific, measureable results; To provide direction and purpose to the Judge staff and our many volunteers; To be able to communicate concrete objectives and related action plans to potential enrollee families, donors, alumni and all other stakeholders. To lend structure to the planning process, a Steering Committee was named, as well as the following subcommittees: Admissions/Marketing; Athletics; Brisson Center; Building/ Facilities; Development; STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math); Student Life and Technology. As Chairman of the Strategic Steering Committee, I am very pleased to report on the progress we’ve made in just one year. All committees met with the Steering Committee at least twice in the latter half of 2013, providing a great deal of insight. It is safe to say that the Father Judge leadership has never had better optics into all facets of our operations. In Admissions, we purchased a software package (currently being customized for our use) to streamline the gathering of information for enrollment, tuition assistance, grades etc. In addition, we established a team approach, with our teachers and administrative staff reaching out to 14 Father Judge High School prospects via “telethon” nights and mailings, to ensure that we are frontand-center throughout the decision process. In Athletics, we hired a full-time Athletic Director, Jimmy Lynch, who has already made great strides with our athletic purchasing and transportation. More importantly, he has recruited several interns from the college ranks, allowing our students, including many non-varsity athletes, to take advantage of supervised use of the Mitchell Activity Center. The Brisson Center features a revised mission, as well as a new Director, Diane Lieber Campbell. Diane is making great progress spreading the word to faculty, current students and prospective students, about the benefits of tutoring, proper study skills, and content expertise. A quick tour of our facilities is all that is needed to see the progress by the Building Committee – locker renovation on all three floors plus the Fox Gym locker room, major upgrades in the cafeteria, completion of our new STEM Center, just to name a few. As an added bonus, many upgrades were accomplished via donated labor and supplies. The Development Committee identified and qualified consulting firms to direct our next capital campaign, which will kick off in 2014. To facilitate a successful effort, we’ve also invested in software to clean up our alumni/donor database. Our annual fundraiser, the Crusader Campaign, has reached a record high in donors and dollars raised halfway through the fiscal year. The STEM Committee is leading the charge to fundamentally change how all of us need to think about the ways our students learn, and the tools we need to educate them, to prepare our graduates for learning at the next level, and for dealing with technology in the workplace. In the long term, STEM will be a self-sustaining initiative due to the availability of private sector and foundation grants that foster STEM learning. The Student Life Committee has revived Career Day and breathed new life into our Student Government program. This group consists of a number of younger alumni who are eager to lend time and talent as we identify areas of need. Finally, our Technology Committee is tackling the major challenge of developing and implementing our tablet learning strategy. The trend toward experiential learning moves ever forward, with mobile devices replacing textbooks, and we need to be ready in all respects. In 2013, we rewired the campus and added Apple TVs to sync devices with our SmartBoards. Going forward, we will need to accommodate, at some point, 1,000 active users on campus each day. It is fair to say that 2013 brought as much activity, change, and investment in the future, as any year in our history. We expect 2014 to bring more of the same, thanks in large part to the efforts of our many committee members – nearly 100% volunteers. They give of themselves to make Judge all that it is today and position us to be successful well into the future. I look forward to updating you again in twelve months. FOR ANDY POLOVOY ’63 IT’S NOT ABOUT THE BIKE! Lance Armstrong made this title famous in his 2000 memoire, about his battle with cancer. Yet, before Armstrong was born, Andy Polovoy ’63 was an avid bicycle enthusiast, and later a fundraiser for multiple charities, especially cancer research. For the past forty-two years, “it’s not about the bike” has rung true for this Judge grad as well. After losing his father to cancer at a young age, Andy’s mother (a longtime cancer survivor) motivated him to fundraise for the American Cancer Society as a participant in the first ACS Bike-AThon. For more than four decades, Andy has participated in the City-to-Shore ride (more than 4,000 riders last year), captained teams, volunteered to map routes, biked as a safety observer, and served as committee member in the planning of this annual event. Last fall the American Cancer Society honored Andy with its Melvin Boone Award for Volunteer Service. Andy’s biking and the charity fundraising doesn’t stop with the Cancer Society. The Multiple Sclerosis Society counts on Andy for the MS-150 ride as well, to organize teams, serve as an on-road safety rider, and always, to raise money for research. A healthy, and durable long-time rider, Andy has raised well over $250K with his teams. For the past ten years he has captained the Kennedy Health System team, which was a top-twenty-five fundraising team last year. Here, he’s pictured with his crystal Melvin Boone Award along with Lou Guarrieri ’71 who also captained a top-twenty-five team and was an individual top-100 fundraiser. Forty-three years ago, I started dating a local girl from the neighborhood. She soon became my soul mate and eventually my wife. Her three siblings came along as part of the package. Over time, the three became more than in-laws, they became two brothers and a sister. There had been a fourth sibling, but he did not make it home from Vietnam. He is one of our HONORED 27. I did not have the pleasure or the honor of knowing him, but having known his older brother, I feel that I knew him also. My story centers on this older brother, Bill Kilderry. Being only a year apart from Michael you might consider them to be twins. Everything they did, they did together. It was only when it came to serving their country did they separate. Bill, the oldest, joined the Air Force and Michael joined the Marines. The day Michael died, a piece of Bill died along with him. Over the years Bill and I became very close, like real brothers. Since its formation “The Friends” has raised funds necessary to make improvements to the school campus, and to fund the academic programs that complement the traditional curriculum. “The Friends” endeavor to fulfill the operational requests of the the school President and Administration, and rely on the President’s Advisory Board for careful evaluations and recommendations for action. “The Friends” proudly identify the following achievements in support of Father Judge High School: 2014 SCHOOL INVESTMENT OF $50,000 Grand Opening of our new state-of-the art STEM Center 2010 SCHOOL INVESTMENT OF $125,000 Addition of Construction Technology curriculum and workshop 2011-2014 SCHOOL INVESTMENT OF $100,000 Technology Renovations throughout the School 2009 SCHOOL INVESTMENT OF $50,000 Library Computer Lab 2013 SCHOOL INVESTMENT OF $89,000 Restoration of Student Lockers, Fox Gym locker rooms, and renovations to cafeteria 2008 SCHOOL INVESTMENT OF $400,000 Fr. Father Judge has the best Advisory Board that I have ever been associated with. Quite frankly, this Board is the elite of the Archdiocese, and definitely gets high marks throughout the Philadelphia region. 2013 was a great year for Father Judge. In my dual roles as Chairman of the Advisory Board for the school, and Friends of Father Judge High School, Inc., I work with a phenomenal group of dedicated men, alumni, and friends to make sure that two critical components are in place: There has to be a plan. One does not stumble upon success, rather one follows a map, and the culmination of the journey is the Tradition of Success our great School is known around the region for. It is my job to make sure we are planning for the future. For 60 years, Judge has educated young men in the image and likeness of our patron, St. Francis deSales, and it’s my job to make sure it continues on for decades to come. We need the resources to make the plan a reality and that is where the Board and the Friends of Father Judge High School, Inc. delivers. Since its formation in 2001, the Friends and School Benefactors have invested over $10 million dollars into campus improvements, professional development, technology upgrades, and support staff. Dollars raised by the Friends are managed by the Friends with its singular mission being the continuous support of Father Judge High School. My mantra as chairman has been If we can dream it, then we can do it and we have. No other school has done what we have. No other school has the sense of pride, dedication, and determination we have. As we progress in 2014, I assure you that we have even bigger plans on the horizon. I hope we can count on your continued support. Here’s to our Crusaders, forever!! Bill St. Clair ’75 Chairman 2013 Report 31 PRESIDENT’S CHALLENGE CUP October 8, 2012 $108,450 The sixth Annual President’s Cup was a tournament of corporate leaders, business owners, union officials, administrators of local colleges, universities and other regional non-profits. Players received multiple gifts at registration. Before the round players were treated to a luncheon on the veranda overlooking the 18th hole and practice green while enjoying the sounds of the Judge Jazz Band. Following opening remarks and a quick prayer from Fr. Campellone, players hit the links for what was a beautiful day of golf. After 18 pristine holes, the foursome of Tim Shortall ’77, Bimmie Bartley, Bob Rinier and Jeff Peltier, from International Game Technology (IGT), were the victors. Following the round of golf, players were treated to dinner, dessert and cocktails while they listened to remarks from event Chair Charlie Seravalli ’66. Following dinner, contest awards and Box Pool Prizes were given out to the winners. Fr. Campellone wrapped up the evening with a passionate speech about the importance of the event, and how the funds generated help him and the Friends of Father Judge High School achieve their goals. Funds raised at this event went towards a state-of-the-art STEM Center (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) which opened January 2014. Thanks to all those who made this day a great success. TITLE SPONSOR Thomas B. Fenerty ’66 Navmar Applied Sciences Corporation PLATINUM SPONSOR William F. Cochaired by Joseph Ashdale ‘74 and Seamus Boyle ‘61. The Building Committee has continuously worked to improve the infrastructure and curb appeal of the school. In a span of ten weeks last summer, June 17 to August 23, countless tradesmen and volunteers completed the following: painting the stairways, hallways, locker rooms, and student lockers; installing new ceilings and lighting in the cafeteria; construction of a new Crusader Shop; construction of a new Admissions Office; renovation for a new Advancement meeting office; and the customary cleaning and preparation for the new school year.
