tsuilt by Denver Police Sergeant Tony Martinez,
some
call it a "Cop'r Chopper." You gotra respect the authoritative
power of its 147 cubic inches of American V-twin power. The
consistency of the way "Ph^t-Azz" performs at bike shows commands a closer look at the machine and the man behind it. A
United StatesMarine Corps veteran, Tony was a machine gunnef
in the Gulf W'ar conflict. Now, he lives to help people by serving
and protecting the ciry he dearly loves.

A few of his buddies were just hangin' at
Tony's shop, drinking a few cold beverages and looking over his progress on
the latest project when one of them
said, "That's a fat ass bike!"
Tony developed his affection for custom motorcycles by way of his dad,
Abel, who has near$ 3O years experience as a master machinist for Sundstrand Aviation. Abel was always building custom choppers out of his own
garage. After he retired, Abel handed
down all of his tooling, setup expertise,
and teachings to Tony. More than a mere
dabbler, Tony is "all about" expert fabfication and is vefy capable of cfeatirig:
some truly one-off parts for his projects \
from within the confines of his own
personal machine shop. His favorite
hand-fabbed piece of perfection on
Phat-Azz is the fuel tank. In Tony's
words, "You might attempt a close copy
of this one, but even I cannot copy it
exactly as it is." Tony used an English
wheel, planishing hammer, bag and mallets to transform an ordinary flat piece
of l8-gauge steel into a long sexy piece
of art. Among many secrets in his bag of
tricks, he let us in on how he designed a
hidden crossover tube and covered the
tunnel to make the tank look as if it was
permanently attached to the frame.
rJ/hile Tony was pounding sheet metal,
Abel would sometimes drop by the
shop to help. Tony designed a hot rod
velocity stack on paper and Abel ran the
machines to create those interchangeable stacks with a hidden pocket for a
screen. The nearly 1o-foot-long, singlesided air-shock frame is from Brad of
Outlaw Customs. There's no waiting for
the air pump to take effect, since Tony
hid a secret air chamber in the frame.
Tony specified a front end from American Suspension with raw downtubes so
he could color match them with the rest
ofPhat-Azz.
Tony doesn't have a superstitious
bone in his body, so the groovy shade of
gfeen that was custom mixed and meticulously applied by Todd Atkinson of
Lianz Kustoms won't make him the

least bit nervous. The l47-cubic-inch
motof can get hotter than hell, so Tony
machined a billet shell to join the motor
to the gearbox and as a cover for his
own 5 l/2-qtan oil bag.
Tony's motto is, "One bike at a time;'
and his main goal is to make each unique
bike he creates as flawless as possible no
matter how long it takes. He says, "You
can always learn something new each
and every day ofyour life. AII it takes is
commitment, discipline, and desire."
Tony's shop, Cop'r Choppers, shows
a bike for one year before turning it
loose on the streets. Tony's wife, Brina,
rides a custom Cop'r Chopper of her
very own, but is more oft recognized

en-route to Sturgis or
just ridin'the Rockies, theirs is a group
of around 20 bikes comprising a list of
the usual suspects who can sometimes
be found parked outside SedaliaBar and
Gri[ just south of the Mile High City.
This month's Fox Hunt Winner only
broke a few laws while rubbin' her
meaty gazongas on officer Tony's green
belly-dragger. Lovely little Rabecca Lee
is a Georgia peach and we sure wouldn't
mind shakin' her tree.
