CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2013!
Graduation date was upon us on May 31, 2013. The 48th VMCHS graduating class walked down Our Lady of Guadalupe
Church’s aisle to celebrate the end of their high school years and the beginning of a new chapter in their lives: college.
Graduates were joined by their family and friends in this special occasion. As tradition dictates, both the valedictorian
and the salutatorian spoke at the ceremony.
Salutatorian is an academic title given to the second highest graduate of the entire graduating class. The title comes
from the salutatorian's traditional role as the first speaker at a graduation ceremony, delivering the salutation. This
year’s salutatorian was Luisa Ramirez.
Valedictorians are usually the student with the highest ranking among his or her graduating class. The term is an
anglicized derivation of the Latin vale dicere ("to say farewell"), historically rooted in the valedictorian's traditional
role as the final speaker at the graduation ceremony. The valedictory address generally is considered a final farewell
to classmates, before they disperse to pursue their individual paths after graduating. The Valedictorian of the class of
2013 was Jose Ignacio Velarde.
As an alumni association, we congratulate the class of 2013 and welcome them to this select group of men and
women who can call Vincent Memorial their alma mater.

COLLEGE and MASTERS!
We have more than ten VMCHS alums who are graduating this year from college or a Master’s Degree. We
are proud of their accomplishments and want to include them in this newsletter to showcase what they did and
where they will go now. Each alum got a page and they were asked the same questions. Please take the time to
read what they did. We congratulate them and ask God to be with them in this new adventure in their life!
Keep us posted with other achievements so that your VMCHS family can know about them! We all take

Name: Alma Caballero
Class: VMCHS 2009/ Georgetown SFS 2013
University: Georgetown University, School of Foreign Service
Major: Science, Technology, and International Affairs with a concentration
in Business, Growth and Development
How would you describe your college experience?
My college experience has been challenging yet filled with accomplishments.
Georgetown has shaped me into becoming a woman of character, faith, and
determination. I have been able to meet hard working driven people from all
over the world who inspire me to prepare myself and value the incredible opportunity
of attending Georgetown University. My college experience has been the most fascinating, exciting and rewarding
experience of my 22 years of life.
What was the hardest thing/class/experience for you?
The most challenging element of my undergraduate experience at Georgetown University was the high academic level
and expectation that the university, colleagues, and professors had for me ever since my freshmen year. The
transition from Vincent Memorial to Georgetown University was a challenging and shocking one. I phased a daily
challenge of coping with the academic competition that several of my colleges posed within the classroom, thus
allowing me to define what my strengths and weakness were and arduously work to improve and achieve my goals.
Were you part of any clubs?
I had the honor to serve as president for Georgetown’s Latin American Student Association (LASA) and for the
Georgetown Aspiring Minority Business Leaders and Entrepreneurs (GAMBLE). I was also privileged to be the chair of
Georgetown University’s traditional Jesuit Heritage Week.
Did you study abroad?
Rome, Italy and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
What will you do next?
I will pursue a Masters in Latin American Studies at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service.
What is your favorite college memory?
I have had the fortune to have numerous college memories that have shaped and marked my life. However, if I
would have to choose a favorite college memory, it would be when I had the opportunity to represent Georgetown in
the First and Second Annual Leadership Summit in Lima, Peru and in Bogotá, Colombia. It was wonderful to represent
the university’s student body and meet Georgetown alumni of my native Latin American region.
What tips would you give to a VMCHS graduating Senior who is about to embark in their college journey?
DREAM BIG and work very hard to achieve your dreams. Attending a four year university is an experience that is
incomparable; you will be able to learn from your classes, from your professors, and from yourself. It is essential to
create a group of mentors who will guide you and provide you with invaluable advice that will help you throughout
your college journey. It is vital to talk to your parents; they are your first mentors! It is also very important to
contribute to your college community, whether it is through any leadership position, or a voluntary/ service activity, it
is of extreme importance to give back in any way to the university who will prepare you and set the path for your
professional career.

Name: Alvaro Voelker
Class: 2009
University: Syracuse University
Major: Sport Management
How would you describe your college experience?
It was an unbelievable experience, everything I expected it to be.
The fastest and best four years of my life.
What was the hardest thing/class/experience for you?
The hardest thing for me was definitely the language during my first weeks on
campus. My English was on point when it came down to schoolwork and writing
papers, but it was a different story in a social environment. I was not used to
speaking English all the time, socially I always speak Spanish, never really spoke English at
school besides at a class presentation or when Sr. Lilia was around.
Were you part of any clubs?
I was part of the Sport Management club, and part of Syracuse University Men’s Soccer team, as their manager.
Did you study abroad?
I never had the chance to “study” a semester abroad. I had two abroad experiences, I took an Olympic class, which was a threeweek class in Europe, and we traveled to London, Paris, Greece, and Switzerland going through different Olympic sites. My
second experience is that at the moment I’m interning with Adidas in their Brand Marketing department at Adidas HQ in
Germany.
What will you do next?
I ask myself that every day, I still don’t know. I will apply for jobs and other internships in August, then work or intern for a year,
and apply for grad school for 2014, but nothing set at the moment.
What is your favorite college memory?
Working with the Syracuse University Men’s Soccer team. I was their manager for three years, and my favorite memory is that
we were the second team in school history to ever make it to the National tournament, and first team to reach the Sweet
Sixteen, and after two awful years and being disregarded by everyone in the country, ending up our season as the #17th team in
the country was a great feeling.
What tips would you give to a VMCHS graduating Senior who is about to embark in their college journey? Enjoy yourself,
don’t take school too seriously, obviously work hard and get good grades, but have fun doing it because time flies.
Anything else you would like to mention:
I just want to thank all my professors who helped me get where I’m at - Ms. Ana, Mr. Contreras, Mr. Jacobelli, Mrs. Carreno, Sr.
Lilia, Mrs. O. Mr. Eddie, Mano, Sra. Guillen, Mrs. Valenzuela, Ms. Guilin, Mrs. Gallego and especially Mrs. Ramirez who was
always there to help me, and guide me through the college process.

How would you describe your college experience?
The best way to describe my college experience is a whirlwind. I was
able to do amazing things like studying abroad in Rome for an entire
semester and conducting my own research and meeting wonderful people
along the way. Living in Chicago was definitely the best part of my college
experience. There is always something going on, always something new
to see and experience.
What was the hardest thing/class/experience for you?
The hardest part was getting acquainted to a new city and new surroundings.

snowball fight in the quad and my friends and I played in the snow all morning.
What tips would you give to a VMCHS graduating Senior who is about to embark in their college journey?
Enjoy every second of it! It goes by so fast. Stop every now and then to notice how far you have made it and how
much you have grown. They will truly become some of the best years of your life, have fun with it!

I would describe my college experience as a really good one, I had
the chance to meet new people from different majors and my teachers
