1. ABOUT BURK’S FALLS, RYERSON, ARMOUR – AN INTRODUCTION
The South Almaguin Highlands, bordering on the world-famous Algonquin Park, is an
area of numerous lakes, rivers, and forests in the Georgian Bay watershed. Our climate
offers warm and sunny summers and cold crisp winters. The maple tree defines both
spring and fall, from gathering maple sap in the spring to offering the most spectacular
fall colours. From Algonquin Park the Magnetewan River winds its way through Armour
and Ryerson townships, and into the Village of Burk’s Falls, passing Pickerel, Jack, Doe,
Three Mile, Cecebe and a host of smaller lakes and streams to the shores of Georgian
Bay and Lake Huron.
It is no wonder that the beauty of our landscape was captured on canvas by the Group
of Seven and Tom Thompson: large outcroppings of rocky pre-Cambrian granite offset
by blue lakes and majestic pines. We are also blessed with provincially significant
wetland areas, which play host annually to millions of birds passing through or
staying for the summer. Our good agricultural land is ideal for mixed farming.
For the outdoor adventure seeker, the area offers unlimited possibilities for rock
climbing, mountain biking, hiking, kayaking and canoeing, water sports, and fishing in
the summer and fall, whitewater rafting in the spring, and a full range of winter sports
from skiing or snowmobiling to dog-sledding, the increasingly popular sport of winter
camping, and ice-fishing. For the less adventurous, picknicking, paddling, bird watching
and the annual magnificent display of fall colours are all part of the quieter activities we
have on offer to residents and visitors. There are many beaches and public access
points to the water for visitors and residents for day trips, as well as cottages and
campgrounds for longer stays.
It is an area proud of its strong community spirit set against a backdrop of some of the
world’s most beautiful lakes, forests and unspoiled wilderness. At the heart of the
community are its friendly people, service clubs and associations. The enthusiasm of the
community shows itself in the variety of annual festivals – winter and summer – that
draw in the visitors and bring out the locals.
In this Community Profile we have provided you with a picture of a vibrant community
that is close to nature, safe, secure, and where the clean air and clean water are
precious assets. Burk’s Falls, Armour and Ryerson is an appealing community-as-awhole, made up of several smaller, close-knit yet extremely friendly communities.
South Almaguin Highlands has a mix of commercial, manufacturing and service
businesses. The availability of quality serviced locations on the main street of Burk’s
Falls, and the absence of development taxes makes this area a beautiful, affordable
place to be and do business.
Wnith high speed telecommunications, infrastructure, transportation links, access to
markets and a competitive tax base, South Almaguin Highlands is a desirable place to
live and do business.

1.1 Location and Distance to Major Markets
South Almaguin’s location on Highway 11, the major north-south provincial highway, just south
of the Trans-Canada highway, makes it easy to find and access from all points on the continent.
Secondary highways 520 and 124 provide a scenic route to Parry Sound on Georgian Bay. We
are located within a three-hour drive of our major market, the Greater Toronto Area (257 km),
which accounts for over 80% of all visitors to our area.
1.2 Infrastructure
Burk’s Falls is the only village between Huntsville and Powassan to have both, a water and
sewer system. Maintenance and updating to maintain provincial standards are ongoing. It is a
huge plus to be able to offer these services to potential investors. The fact that the system is
completely financed by user fees puts the municipalities involved in a better position to
debenture needed updates and repairs. Natural gas is available in Burk’s Falls, and rural
customers are serviced by both oil and liquid propane gas.
Internet and cell phone infrastructure are excellent in the village of Burk’s Falls
and Armour and Ryerson townships. Many farms and home businesses are
based in rural areas of South Almaguin and have
full internet services available.
Electrical power is supplied by Lakeland Power Distribution in the village of Burk’s Falls.
In the rural areas Ontario Hydro supplies electricity.
Local roads and highways are excellent and have provided efficient and safe access to the
GTA, as well as southern and northern Ontario. The extension of the four lanes on Hwy 11 at

Burk's Falls in 2012 was the last in a multi-year project to widen Highway 11 to four lanes
between Huntsville and North Bay as planned in the 2005 Northern Ontario Highway Strategy.
The widening will enable northern communities for future growth, support local businesses and
promote economic development and tourism. Secondary Highway 520 to Magnetawan is also
well maintained year-round.
Village and township roads provide access to all populated areas of both townships, and are
well maintained by their respective public works departments all year round as emergency
services, mail delivery, and school bus services rely on them. Many are paved or high floated.
1.3 Climate

bringing its own beauties and outdoor activities.

2. DEMOGRAPHICS
2.1 Population Size and Growth
The total population of Burk’s Falls, Armour and Ryerson in 2013 was 3113 and is a little
older than the provincial average, but has grown by over 8% since 2006. Most of the
growth has been in the older age groups over 45 as South Almaguin is a popular
retirement location for its seasonal residents and others. This presents new opportunities
for retail, construction, skilled trades and services to grow their businesses.
2.2 Educational Attainment
Source: Manifold Data Mining, Inc. 2013
 11.4% percent of the population holds a trade certificate or diploma, which is
higher than the provincial average of 8%.
 Those with a high school diploma comprise about 30%, which is higher than the

3. LABOUR FORCE
In 2013 there were an estimated 1,471 people employed in Burk’s Falls, Armour and

employment level. The trades, and sales and service provide employment for the majority of
the area’s working residents.
3.1 Employment Opportunities
Employment opportunities in long-term healthcare in the District of Parry Sound are very
good. The number of healthcare workers employed in long-term care in the region has

Clearly, the combination of availability of
high paying jobs and reasonable real
estate prices equals affordability of
home ownership in Burks Falls, Armour
and Ryerson.
While the majority of local residents
own their homes, there is also a healthy
rental marker offering a variety of
accommodations, e.g. multiple unit
apartment buildings, individual
residences and shared buildings.
Choices are not limited to ‘town’, as
both Townships have rental units,
some located on the shores of the
area’s many lakes, and some deep in
the countryside where Mother Nature
makes a great neighbour.
And of course, houses, too, of all
shapes and sizes are available for
purchase in South Almaguin’s beautiful

4.2 Public Parks, Conservation Areas and Public Water Access to Waterways
The Magnetawan River is a historic navigable recreational waterway, which runs from
Algonquin Park to Georgian Bay, passing through the South Almaguin Highlands. The
depth of the river makes exploring exciting for scuba diving and snorkeling. There are five
lakes and numerous streams you can visit along this waterway. Ahmic Lake is the largest,
followed by Cecebe, Neighick (Beaver), Crawford and Midlothian. The river joins all these
lakes. The Magnetawan River is a wonderful recreational opportunity to fish, swim, boat,
kayak, or canoe. For whitewater enthusiasts there are six sets of rapids on the
Magnetawan River.
Excellent fishing can be found in all local lakes and streams with many varieties to catch
including smallmouth bass, pike, perch, walleye, catfish, smelt, speckled trout. Pickerel,
Three Mile, Jack, Doe, Horn, and Bartlett are just some of the many other lakes, which dot
the landscape.

10.7 High Speed Internet Connectivity
Access to high-speed (broadband) Internet service is an ever-increasing factor in the
decision to move/re-locate/remain in a specific geographic location. High Speed enables
the residents and businesses of Burk’s Falls, Armour and Ryerson to access online
information and services that support learning, health care, and business growth
opportunities.
Communities around the world have recognized that high speed Internet access
stimulates innovation and competitiveness in business and agriculture. This
allows local businesses to stay in their communities and promote themselves
over the Internet. This essential infrastructure will enable our children and
grandchildren to overcome the limits of geography and work where they live.
Broadband connectivity also supports regional economic development through publicprivate partnerships, and improves the business case for new investments in our area.
Local businesses and residents have several providers to choose from for high
speed/broadband Internet service.
