Resident Spotlight - Ev Melin
Happy 100th Birthday
Evelyn is the eldest of 6 children
born in Minneapolis to Rhoda
and August on September 3,
1916. Her younger siblings are
Muriel, Erwin, Willis, Francis
and Bobby.
Her father was a mail clerk in Wilmar, MN where
the family settled. Her mother stayed at home and
raised the family.
Ev went to Lafayette school all the way through
11th grade. It was the same school her father had
gone to. When they moved to Minneapolis she
finished high school at Central High.
After graduating, she went to business school but
didn’t finish because of the Great Depression. She
took several jobs over the years. Her favorite job
was at Peter P. Hove grocery store. They treated her
like family. Her second job was at Dayton’s in
1939.
Her father taught Ev how to play bridge at a very
early age and she still plays it to this day. Another
fun game was Bunco and that she played with her
girlfriend at Firebarns. She met her future husband,
Elmer (nicknamed AM for ambitious) there. They
dated for five years and just after getting married in
April 1942 he was called to service for the Army Air
Corps. He served at fort Snelling, Florida, Kentucky,
England, Holland and France.
Their son Jerry was born in Minneapolis and AM
didn’t meet their son until he was 1 1/2 years old.
Jerry is now a clinical engineer in Virginia and calls
every Sunday. He loves to visit once a year to go to
the Minnesota State Fair and for Ev’s birthday.
After several attempts they decided to adopt a
daughter: Linda. She had been abandoned after her
grandmother couldn't keep her and she was put in a
home from 5 months to 1 year. At that time she was
still just crawling and drinking from a bottle so she
was like an infant. Linda has also suffered from
severe asthma all her life.
Linda married and had two children. Casey is getting her doctorate in psychology. A.J., whom some of
you have met, is a famous juggler and has performed
many times at The Rivers. Linda died of complications
from asthma in November 2015.
Ev’s husband died of a massive stroke in 2008 just
as they were moving to The Rivers.
Ev has been an avid reader all her life. She loves to
play bridge and has bowled until she was 95 when she
had to stop driving. She also enjoyed square dancing.
Eve is an active member of The Rivers and loves
living here with her many friends and loves running
the bridge games.

Is it Normal?
Ashley Clift
Director of
Health Services
Where did I set my keys? Who was I just going to call? These are questions that you might find
yourself asking from time to time. As people get older, there are memory changes that are expected
with normal aging; there are changes that are not. Normal aging can cause a general slow down in
cognitive thinking (thinking and reasoning). It can also cause some problems finding the right word
to use or a lessened ability to hold onto information so that you can recall it later. However, even
with these changes, you can still care for yourself in all day to day activities.
There are times when these normal changes start to get a bit more extreme. Here’s ten warning signs
that someone you know may be suffering from a sort of dementia or Alzheimer’s:
Memory loss that effects daily life
Challenges with problem solving
Trouble completing simple and familiar tasks
Confusion with time and place
Trouble understanding visual images
New problems finding words when speaking or writing
Misplacing items, but not being able to retrace steps to find them
Poor judgement
Social withdrawal
Changes in personality or mood
If you notice these in someone that you know well, let someone know. Again, we all slow down a little bit, but we
need to watch out for one another as well!

The Whole Picture on Whole Grains!
Are you interested in reducing your risk of heart disease, stroke, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and several
forms of cancer? You can – by eating more whole grains! Even though research continues to support the
role of whole grains in assisting in the prevention of a variety of diseases, many people are missing the
nutritional message. Whole grains contain all three parts of the kernel; the bran (the fiber-rich outer
Kari Stolz RD, LD
layer), the endosperm (middle part), and the germ (the nutrient-rich inner part), so by eating whole grain
Dietitian
foods, you get the nutritional benefits of the entire grain! Similar to fruits and vegetables, whole grains
Consultant
contain disease-fighting phytochemicals, antioxidants, and are rich in fiber. In addition, they are good
sources of B vitamins, vitamin E, magnesium, and iron. How much whole grain is recommended? The Dietary Guidelines
Eighth Edition and the MyPlate recommends that we eat at least half of our daily intake of grains as whole grains (3-5
servings of whole grains each day.) Examples of whole grain varieties include wheat, oats, corn, and rye as well as barely,
spelt, millet, and flaxseed, which may be less common. Find whole grains by
checking the package label for the words “whole” or “whole-grain.” The
Whole Grains Council has created an official packaging symbol called the
“Whole Grain Stamp” that is helpful to consumers in finding whole grain
products. Easy ways to incorporate more whole grains into your daily eating
plan: try whole grain breads and pasta, whole grain cereal, brown rice, or
substitute half the white flour with whole wheat flour in baked goods. Enjoy
the variety, enjoy the taste, and enjoy the healthy benefits associated with
eating whole grains!

International Talk Like a Pirate Day
News From The Maintenance Shop
September 19th is a parodic holiday created
in 1995 by John Baur (Ol' Chumbucket)
and Mark Summers (Cap'n Slappy),
of Albany, Oregon who proclaimed
September 19th each year as the day when
everyone in the world should talk like
Joe Johnson
a pirate. For example, an observer of
Director of
Life Enrichment this holiday would greet friends not with
"Hello," but with "Ahoy, matey!" The
holiday, and its observance, springs from a romanticized
view of the Golden Age of Piracy.
Summer is winding down and the weather
is starting to cool off. This change always
brings up questions regarding the
thermostat settings so here it is again.
When it cools down at night and you feel
the need, switch the thermostat setting
Jim Rowland,
from air conditioning mode to the heat
Director of
position. But remember the following day
Plant Operations
if the sun is shining, things can heat up
real fast and you will have to change the setting back to
air conditioning.
According to Summers, the day is the only known holiday
to come into being as a result of a sports injury. During a
racquetball game between Summers and Baur, one of them
reacted to the pain with an outburst of "Aaarrr!", and the
idea was born. That game took place on June 6, 1995, but
out of respect for the observance of the Normandy landings,
they chose Summers' ex-wife's birthday, as
it would be easy for him to remember.
This scenario plays out the same way
every spring and fall and the phone
calls to the maintenance department
increase ten-fold. This is our seasonal
temperature transition and it requires
that every resident will have to adjust your thermostats to
maintain your own comfort level.
At first an inside joke between two friends,
the holiday gained exposure when John
Baur and Mark Summers sent a letter
about their invented holiday to the
American syndicated humor columnist Dave Barry in 2002.
Barry liked the idea and promoted the day. Growing media
coverage of the holiday after Barry's column has ensured
that this event is now celebrated internationally, and Baur
and Summers now sell books and T-shirts on their website
related to the theme. Part of the success for the international
spread of the holiday has been attributed to non-restriction
of the idea or non-trademarking, in effect opening the
holiday to creativity and "viral" growth.
The association of pirates with peg
legs, parrots, and treasure maps,
popularized in Robert Louis
Stevenson's novel Treasure Island has
had a significant influence on parody
pirate culture. So have some fun and
celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day or
Ye maybe walkin’ the plank!
Remember, this is your home and you have complete
control to be as warm or cool as you decide.
