the Caribbean Football Union Cup.
The team made this accomplishment
in Martinique recently playing in
Group 3 between September 1st-8th.
However, it was not an easy task. Here
is a recap of Group 3.
Suriname vs Barbados
Neither team wanted to lose their
first match and fought tooth and nail.
Barbados took an early lead in the
69th minute with a goal coming from
Rommel Burgess but Jerney Faerber of
Suriname was allowed to equalize in
the 80th minute. The match ended in
a tame 1 all draw in what seemed to
be a keenly contested match.

Martinique vs Barbados
Barbados looked like the obvious
winners taking a two nil lead in the
first half. Defender Ricardio Morris
found the back of Martinique’s net as
early as the 13th minute while Carl
Joseph doubled the lead in the 30th.
However, the second half took a turn
for the worse as captain Emerson
Boyce scored an own goal in the 57th
minute. After that the Martinique
players got a glimmer of hope and
came at the ‘Bajans’ with everything
they had. Gael Germany equalised
in the 68th minute and Jose Goron
sealed the deal in the 81st minute.

A new BFA beckons
Nothing else but positive changes brightens up the darkest day. In 104 years of football history the BFA brings
to you a home for football. One could only wish that so many great players who are not with us could witness
the opening of the new administrative building.
However, the BFA has not only made physical changes. As recent as August 30th, the constitution was revised
at a special general meeting held at the Sir Garfield Sports Complex in Wildey. As a result, the Barbados
Football Association will soon become an incorporated organization, which not only satisfies the requirements
of FIFA but takes the governance of the Association to a new level.
This year the association was able to enter several of our national teams in regional competitions. The senior
women's team participated in the Caribbean leg of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers and for the first time ever in
CONCACAF there was a Girls Under 15 tournament in which we competed. Our under 20 team participated in
preliminary round of the FIFA World Cup and although they did not make it to the second round they remained
unbeaten. However, the under 17 men's team made it to the second round of the Caribbean leg in the FIFA
U17 World Cup qualifiers. In addition, it is with great joy to report that the senior men's team qualified for the
round 2 in the CFU Cup.
More exciting times are ahead as October promises to be an exciting month and the start to a new era in
Barbados' football community.
We feel honoured to be part of the Soccerex Americas forum to be held in Barbados on the 21st and 22nd
of October. This is the biggest Soccerex expo in the world when the country welcomes a number of potential
investors. The BFA is very happy to be a part of such a memorable event and hopes that this event will open
doors for future success, not only for the game of football, but for the country on a whole. Soccerex as part of
their contribution will be hosting a showcase, where players from the national U17 and U20
selection will be trying to impress top coaches in the hopes of getting chosen for trials professionally.

CFU TOURNAMENTS
Barbados vs Bonaire
Men’s Caribbean Cup Round 1 Group 3
This match was simply a do or die for both teams as either side needed to win in order to qualify for round 2.
But this game came down to who wanted it more. Barbados handed Bonaire a 4 - 1 thumping and sent them
packing. Captain Emerson Boyce opened the scoring with a 55th minute strike, Romario Harewood slotted
home a goal in the 67th and Mario Harte's double strike in the 74th and 76th minutes added insult to injury.
Bonaire was able to salvage some pride as Yurick Sienpaul converted a penalty kick in the 90th.
Round 2 takes place October 6th - 14th in which 16 teams will take part.
GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands In
the inaugural CONCACAF Under-15
Girls’ Championship. Barbados U15
finished at the bottom of Group B.
Barbados was defeated in all three
of their matches in Group B of the
CONCACAF Under 15 Girls
Championship. Last week in their
first game they lost 4 nil to
Trinidad and Tobago at the Ed
Bush Sports Complex, conceding
goals in the 16th, 28th, 46th and
49th minutes. Also losing 3 - 0 to
Honduras at the Truman Bodden
Sports Complex in their second
game- goals were scored in the
25th, 60th and 68th minutes.
Last night the girls suffered their
heaviest defeat in the
championship 7 - 1 to Bermuda.
Leilanni Nesbeth scored a hat-trick
for Bermuda with goals coming in
the 5th, 16th and 49th minutes.
While Teyah Lindo's double strike
came in the 33rd and 34th
minutes.
Tae-eja Bean and Symira Barrell
scored a goal each in the 66th and
67th minute respectively.
However, Shaunte Carrington
scored the only goal for Barbados
in the 20th minute.
3
Team manager Jacqueline Agard
indicated that this was the first
time most of the girls were
actually playing football and it was
a major learning curve for the girls;
however, we would be an
improved team for future
tournaments.

FITNESS : Serious Business
REFEREES FITNESS
Andrew Belgrave
MA Fitness Instructor, BFA Referee Committee
Former FIFA Assistant Referee
Football over the years has
changed, becoming faster, more
tactical and technical. The
refereeing team has not been left
behind. Scientific studies have
been conducted on the game and
players to improve performance.
Refereeing has also benefited from
such research looking specifically
at the fitness performance and
demands of the referee team.
FIFA has trained fitness instructors
worldwide to oversee this
important component of
refereeing.
Top referees and assistant
referees internationally, regionally
and locally are highly trained
athletes. They are expected to be
knowledgeable in the Laws of the
Game, pass written tests, video
tests and be assessed by trained
assessors regularly. A major part
of their training regime is
dedicated to reaching peak
physical fitness and maintaining
that through the season.
FIFA officials such as Adrian Skeete
and Gillian Martindale are under
strict training guidelines. They run
fitness test regularly (4 or more
per year) and use a POLAR System
(wristwatch and heart monitor,
supplied by FIFA) which measures
the heart rate to make sure that
they train at maximum levels each
and every time (4 to 5 days per
week). The POLAR is also worn
during games. These results are
sent weekly to fitness supervisors
at FIFA and CONCACAF for
evaluation and feedback.
Referee fitness involves speed,
endurance, strength, agility,
coordination, flexibility, injury
prevention, diet, rest and many
other areas. The referee’s
fitness may affect decisions that
can decide goal/no goal situations,
penalty/no penalty, yellow or red
cards and ultimately which team
wins/loses or draws the match.
These important decisions that
referees make can cause a team’s
promotion/demotion resulting in
5
the gain or loss of millions or
thousands of dollars, loss of
contracts for players, team
management and staff, loss of
sponsorship, etc. Referees realize
the importance of correct decision
making based on all facts available.
The tired (unfit) referee may not
only be too far from an incident
to correctly assess it, but may not
have an
appropriate angle to see the entire
picture clearly or be mentally
exhausted.
Fitness testing is examined on
the athletic track and the field of
play. Failure of any test is reported
to FIFA, CONCACAF and CFU and
FIFA officials may not be given any
international games or taken off
of the FIFA list completely. Locally,
the unfit officials may be demoted
from the top leagues.
So next time you see local FIFA and
Premier League officials in a game,
understand that their commitment
to fitness is indeed very serious
business.
