I-ACT Policy Statements:
Following is a list of our new members for the period November 1, 2013 through December 31, 2013.
We are glad to have you as members. Remember, at I-ACT you are important to us!

I-ACT recommends the use of currently registered FDA equipment and only disposable speculums, rectal
tubes, or rectal nozzles. However, should the Therapist use reusable speculums, these speculums should, at a
minimum, be autoclaved for sanitation and cleanliness (30 minutes). Additionally, the autoclave unit must be
tested and inspected by competent authority at least four times per year- maintain documentation. (Under NO
conditions should a disposable speculum or rectal tube be reused).
I-ACT recognizes the FDA classifies equipment used to instill water into the colon through a nozzle inserted
into the rectum to evacuate the contents of the colon into three distinct classes; Class I (Enema Kits), Class II
and Class III are (Colon Irrigation Systems). Follow the guidelines of your manufacturer, as approved by the
FDA for the type of equipment (devices) you are using. Make no claims as to the use of your device other
than those approved by the FDA.
The main differences between Class I and Class II devices:
The code of federal regulations CFR 876.5210 & 876.5220 describe the differences between the Class I and
the Class II devices. From that regulation, a Class I device is an enema system and does not include “colonic
irrigation devices”. A “colon irrigation device” is a Class II device, which in part is described as: “The
system is designed to allow evacuation of the contents of the colon during the administration of the colonic
irrigation.
The Class I Device:
· The Class I device is defined as an enema system and may not have temperature control, temperature
gauges or water purification as part of the device. Class I enema systems must be self-administered.
· Manufacturers of Class I devices are not required to have third party oversight as they need not comply
with the good manufacturing practices and record keeping that are required of Class II manufacturers.
Class I devices are not as heavily regulated and controlled by the FDA as Class II devices are.
· Owners of Class I devices may not market their service using the terms “colonics or colonic irrigation”
in describing the scope of their practice of evacuating the contents of the lower bowel.
The Class II Device:
· The Class II Device is a “colonic irrigation device”.
· Manufacturers of Class II devices are required to have third party oversight and must comply with the
good manufacturing practices and record keeping that are required by the FDA. Class II devices are
heavily regulated and controlled by the FDA.
· The FDA requires Class II devices to be sold and used on or at the order of a physician or health care
practitioner. This may be different in each state.
Although I-ACT is not aware of any laws that preclude you from assisting an individual with an enema,
I-ACT does want you to consider upgrading your equipment to the equipment that provides the greatest safeguards to the public. In this profession, that would be equipment marketed as Class II devices.
Remember that I-ACT strongly recommends that all I-ACT members use FDA registered Class II devices or
devices equivalent to Class II devices regulated by the appropriate agency in your country. Only individuals
using FDA registered equipment will be placed on the I-ACT Web Site. Purchase equipment at your own
risk. Ensure you are in compliance with your local, state, federal and country guidelines. Ensure that equipment you purchase is cleared for use in your country.
I-ACT recognizes there are two distinct types of colon irrigation systems; open and closed systems. However,
it is I-ACT policy that the colon hydrotherapist / technician is always in attendance / or is immediately
available to the client throughout the session. The degree of assistance is to be in compliance with the
instructions of the manufacturer of the equipment as registered with the FDA, and/or as directed by a
physician.

I-ACT recommends that you do not put the initials (CT) for colon hydrotherapist after your name, write it out
in full. According to most state laws, putting initials after your name is not allowed unless you are licensed or
have a degree from an accredited professional school.
Advertising copy which states or implies that colon hydrotherapy can treat any disease, promise cure for any
disease, or that makes unsubstantiated medical claims SHALL NOT be used.

Letter to the Members from the I-ACT President:
Dear I-ACT Members,
As I write this letter to you during the holiday
season, I am enjoying the pleasure of my family and
friends. Sitting by the fireplace with snow and ice
outside in Minnesota gives me time to reflect. This
is a relaxing and healthy environment to give thanks
and appreciation for all we have and all we received
in 2013.
As we review 2013, we have been blessed to have
some major successes in our legislative efforts. We
have learned many important lessons from these
successes.
1.We must be unified in our efforts. It only
takes one individual to kill support for a bill.
2.We have found out that the legislators are
serious about professionalism and appropriate
training.
3.Our twenty-five years of hard work building
our image is paying off.

Congratulations to everyone for helping us become
the premier colon hydrotherapy association in the
world.
I would like to recognize the efforts of Richard
Armstrong, from the UK, for solidifying an InterAssociation agreement for the profession of
Colon Hydrotherapy. This document, between
I-ACT, ARCH, RICTAT, and IPCH, sets “common
standards” for our profession. We are waiting for all
associations to sign this agreement. It will be on the
I-ACT web site once all signatures are received.
Speaking of this quarterly, I have asked each
Committee Chair provide you a short bio in addition
to their Committee report. Please review the
Committee Reports and, if you believe their efforts
are important, then volunteeer your time to assist
that committee.
As I look forward to 2014, it is my dream to
increase the size of our Association. We’ve
learned there is strength in numbers, so we need
to expand our membership base. All of us know of
colon hydrotherapists that are not members of our
Association. Become pro-active and help these
individuals understand the value of becoming an
I-ACT member.

all previous conventions. We will honor all of our
previous Board Members. In addition, your Board
is working hard to bring you a superb selection of
speakers. For example, if you believe that the pH

will enjoy listening to one of our keynote speakers,
Dr. Robert O. Young, the author of The pH Miracle:
Balance Your Diet, Reclaim Your Health.
Or, perhaps you will be interested in hearing from
Dr. Naina Sachdev, the former ambassador for Olay
Regenerist Proctor & Gamble skin care line. She
is an international educator and speaker on cutting
edge women’s wellness issues and on bioidentical
hormone replacement therapy. You can’t miss this
presentation.

Hopefully, this brief preview is enough to inspire
you to register for our 2014 Convention, and be part
of the excitement!
As we look forward to 2014, I hope your holiday was
full of all of the joy this season brings, and, I hope
you were able to take time for yourself.
It is important to take time to focus on our personal
well-being also. Remember, to help others, you must
take care of yourself. You are important to us and
you are valued.

During 2013, nine grievances were filed against I-ACT members. Areas of
concern continue to center on instructors and training.
While we understand that disagreements between instructors and students may
occur, instructors are strongly encouraged to provide a contract before the
first day of class, which identifies all school/training policies. Interview your
potential student to access their fit for your program.
If you are providing a mentorship form of training, meaning the student may
have a 1:1 experience with you, make sure your student knows this before
start of class. Follow the I-ACT requirement for Foundation training -100 inclass hours.
Consider revising your refund policy if no refund is currently provided.
Having a NO REFUND UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE is in my opinion harsh. Life happens,
circumstances change. Additionally, many states have consumer protection laws that allow for a percentage
of the monies paid to be refunded. Check your states’ regulations.

Lastly, if the student leaves training before finishing the complete course, please remember to submit an
official transcript to the I-ACT office, providing the hours and course material taught even if the case is
litigated in court. Include the A & P and CPR if this has been completed. Your compliance with I-ACT
guidelines, allows the student an opportunity to continue training with another instructor.
Our clients, association and the general public benefit by the professionalism each of us displays. Lets work
to make the first impression the public has of an I-ACT member, an exceptional one that will be lasting.

The Mid-Atlantic regional meeting took place on Saturday, October 19, 2013.
Even though the day was cloudy and overcast, the room was filled with warmth and
rays of sunshine with knowledge being exchanged. In attendance were: nine (9) I-ACT
members and one (I) guest: Darlene Barnes, Donna Randolph, Bobbie Pallante, Tiffany
Jones, Shari Mewborn, Denise Souza,

While researching another topic, the legal definition
used by attorneys of the Standard of Care for medical
practitioners came to mind. This legal definition is the
framework used to evaluate healthcare practitioners
actions. It presumes that the actions of all healthcare
practitioners’ having the same training and skills will
follow the accepted and recognized practice for that
profession.
For example, the treatment of a heart attack or stroke
by an emergency room physician in the Midwest would
be the same on the West and East coast. A state or
regions local practice takes a back seat to the accepted
standards of practice for such treatment. The standards
are recognized nationally.

Similar to other professions, I-ACT has established standards of practice
guidelines, which its member colon hydrotherapists have a duty to follow.

The association has the expectation that its therapist members:
• (1) Possess an exceptional skill and knowledge above that of general
public. John or Jane Q. Public cannot be expected to know how to
operate the device or truly know what to expect from the session,
especially their first experience.
• (2) That the skill or knowledge each member therapist possesses,
establishes an obligation on the part of the member to act in a
reasonable or sound manner when providing colon hydrotherapy
services. Because you are an I-ACT member, you have access to the
most current SOP (Standard Operating Procedures, Regulations and
Guidelines).
• (3) That another therapist having the same or similar skills and
knowledge would behave in a like manner. Instructors providing
I-ACT training have access to the same syllabi and guidelines.
• (4) I-ACT has provided its members the SOP as a guideline and each
I-ACT therapist using Class 1 and 2 devices has a contraindication list
provided by the manufacturer of that device.
Remember, we have exceptional skills as colon hydrotherapy professionals.
Providing a colon hydrotherapy session on any device requires knowledge
and judgment above the level of the general public.

Information on Approved A&P Courses
Your students may take an A&P course through their local community college or university. If they have
taken an Anatomy & Physiology course for massage, from a state licensed school that provided at least 45
hours of classroom time, that course will also count.
There is one course that may be used for the A&P pre-requisites.
Your student may take the Delmar course through CENGAGE Learning ONLY if you as the instructor or
school register with Delmar and set up the program. It goes through you. Students may not just call Delmar, it doesn’t work that way. The Instructor must Contact :

Regional Rep
The Spring Mid West regional meeting was held in St. Louis, MO, on October 19,
2013. Five members were present. It was hosted by John Schmieder of Community
Acupuncture of St. Louis and Angie Smith of Holistic Wellness.
An update on the new I-ACT Board was given. We reviewed the various committees
and chairs, with an emphasis on finding one or two committees to join in order to
advance our profession. We also reviewed the T-shirt contest and the ease with which
they can create their own design on line.
Our Round table discussion brought up some questions about how to safely and legally
continue our right to practice. The drawings for I-ACT gifts were appreciated, with all
preference for the intellectual materials.
John Schmieder lectured on “Acupuncture Points to Improve Digestion.” He gave us
some simple tips to share with our clients. It was informative.
Mission statement for the fundraising committee:
The Fundraising Committee is responsible to promote the
generation of funds beyond the Association budget to support
the validity of colon hydrotherapy, both in legal and legislative
matters and support scientific research studies, to enable each
I-ACT certified therapist to be recognized as an independent,
qualified professional with validating statistics to support the
industry.

The previous board came up with the idea of creating a cookbook
to support raising funds. One of my missions as newly elected board member is to
continue the goal. I think it’s much needed. As we approach our 25th year anniversary, I
believe this would be a great accomplishment that we as a group can be proud of. Over the
last couple of months I have sent out 2 letters asking for volunteers to help with formatting,
recipes, creating, etc. I am so happy that Judith M. Toscano, ND (Dr. Jude) from Lotus
Wellness Cottage in Stuart, VA, and Diana Loze from Mississauga , ON, have offered to
help with creating the book. We’ve decided this cookbook is going to be different from
the average book. It’s geared more at the questions our clients are asking such as gluten
free foods, candida diet, what to eat before and after a colonic, etc. If you are interested in
helping us complete the cookbook, please contact me at the email listed below.
We are open to any idea’s to help keep the fundraising account afloat and tangible without
donating too much of our own money. I am also hoping to find volunteers to join me
on this venture to raise money. Please email me with any ideas or let me know if you’re
interested in helping.
We look forward to taking on the process of reenergizing and refocusing certain aspects of
our industry.
Our hosts outdid themselves. Room and board for the Regional Rep were provided by
Community Acupuncture and Holistic Wellness at a hotel near the meeting site. (St.
Louis is about 350 miles from my home). Angie and John met me at the hotel and took me out to dinner the night
before. We discussed concerns and topics to be covered at the meeting. It was so gorgeous and thoughtful of them.
I’m donating the travel expenses (car rental and gasoline), thus I-ACT incurred no meeting expenses.

since 2003, I am especially pleased to now chair the Regional Representative
Committee.
It is exciting to have the opportunity to work with a great group of Regional
Representatives, and with the assistance of Co-Chair Suzanne Childre, I am

Allied Professional Insurance will write professional liability insurance for I-ACT members. You must be a current
member and keep your membership current to be eligible for the insurance. Contact the I-ACT office (210-366-2888)
for the application form, or go to the I-ACT web site - Members Only Section - and download the application from
the web site.
Doctors’ Insurance Agency email them at: [email protected]. They also write professional liability insurance

Another company, CM&F may write liability insurance for colon hydrotherapists (they have dropped numerous

is not required - this depends on the underwriter of the insurance.

During 2013, I-ACT members witnessed two states, Colorado and
Connecticut, enact laws granting the right to practice colon hydrotherapy
legally.
Understanding the impact individual citizens working collectively can
have on the legislative process is indeed a rewarding experience. Colon
hydrotherapists, in their respective states, participated in this process by
lobbying legislators and educating clients, state senators and representatives to
gain their support. A few even had the opportunity to testifying in support of
their respective bills.

Illinois, I-ACT members, along with other colon hydrotherapist, introduced
legislation that was later withdrawn after a mutually negotiated agreement with the states’ agency for
licensing. Recently, I-ACT has become aware that two cities in Illinois have blocked business licenses
for non-medical colon hydrotherapists.
Becoming an active participant includes gaining understanding of:
• How bills are developed and introduced.
• Finding a committed sponsor to carry the bill.
• Interviewing, hiring and working with a lobbyist.
• All strategic planning involving the bill becoming a law.
Raising awareness on how the state legislative process works has become imperative, if we are to
gain the right to practice. I-ACT members in CO and CT got involved and were vital participants in
protecting their right to practice.

The following letter was sent to all I-ACT Instructors and Schools:
Dear Schools and Instructors,
As we prepare for 2014, it is time to renew your Instructor and School certification.
There are a few changes to our guidelines that each School/Instructor must be aware of.
First, in response to questions from legislators, the I-ACT Board has standardized the duration of
the Foundation Level training. The meaning of “completing a 100 hour (in the classroom) course
of Colon Hydrotherapy training from an I-ACT approved School and/or an I-ACT Certified
Instructor” is modified to now mean that the training must be done in the physical presence of
the Instructor at the location of the school or “brick and mortar” training facility used by the
school or instructor. Distance learning of any type may not be used in fulfilling the 100 hour
requirement for I-ACT training.
Second, the I-ACT Board has established that the 100 hours of training may not be completed any
faster than 10 days. This means that the minimum time an I-ACT Instructor or School may train,
or advertise to train, an individual is 10 days at the School or Brick and mortar facility of the
Next, the I-ACT Board has just made a couple of modifications to our syllabi. These changes affect our Instructor Requirements.
All Schools/Instructors must send the following documents to the I-ACT Office no later than April 1, 2014:
1. Copy of your Application (the application your new student signs to enter your training)
2. Copy of your Enrollment Agreement/Contract of Training (the agreement/contract your student signs
that outlines the training they will receive from you or your school, the expectations that you have for student
attendance/participation/behavior while in school, and, your refund policy for your school in case the student
does not conclude the training).
3. A copy of the schedule of training (outlines the course work, by Section and Unit from the syllabi that
will be taught each day).
Membership Committee Mission Statement: The purpose of the membership
committee is to assist the membership in growth, by providing education
and international communications, increase member benefits, aid with
member satisfaction to achieve an increased rate of recruitment, retention and
recognition.
Our association’s growth is essential to accomplish our goals. Our goals can
be easily achieved if each one of us invites 1 new member to join. Please reach

This committee has sub-committees that include: Awards Committee, Patron
Members Committee, and a newly established International Liaison Committee. Other Board members are
chairs of these committees and will include information about these in their reports.
When the Office receives the above referenced documents from each School/Instructor, the documents will be logged in and
forwarded to the Senior Education Committee for review and acceptance. Documents that do not meet the Committee standards
will be returned for modification. Each Instructor/School must have their documents approved by the end of the 2014
Convention.
Now, a couple of reminders:
First, remember that the School/Instructor must submit the transcript for training within 14 days of the completion of
training. If a student departs the class and does not complete training, the School/Instructor must document, on the transcript, the
portion of training that was completed and send that to the office within 14 days of the student’s departure from training.
Second, remember that you must be NBCHT Certified to teach any students for I-ACT. If you are not NBCHT Certified,
you will be at the Provisional Instructor level of certification.
Third, remember that you must attend the Mandatory School/Instructor meeting at the 2014 Convention. The mandatory
meeting for all instructors and schools on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at the Millennium Biltmore, Los Angeles, CA. As you know,
Schools must attend this meeting every year and Instructors must attend once every two years. If you did not attend the 2013
Convention you MUST attend this year. Schools/Instructors are only excused for the most dire of circumstances.
If you don’t/can’t make the mandatory meeting, you must complete one of the options that the I-ACT Board has approved, or
you will be placed on Provisional Instructor status and may not train students. The options are to take the online Webinar; or to
purchase the DVD of the Mandatory School / Instructor meeting, complete the exam, and write an essay of 2000 words on the
meeting.

We are currently working on some new opportunities to help gain visibility for
the Association as well as individual members. One initiative is to bring more
content to our Quarterly newsletters; there are several such articles included in
this issue, so we hope you enjoy reading them.
Another initiative that is being discussed is the development of a “best practices
guide” for all colon hydrotherapists to use. So many of you have reported
that you have had success with your marketing efforts, that we’d like to begin
compiling these to share amongst our members. If you have a marketing success
story you’d like to share, please send it to the I-ACT Office.
Our mission statement: The I-ACT Marketing & Public Relations Committee
Chair
is responsible to build awareness of and support for colon hydrotherapy as a
profession as well as a valuable modality through global marketing, education, effective communications,
and relationship building among its members and associates, the medical community and the general
public.
Finally, if you’d like to get involved in the Marketing & PR Committee, please let me know. We’re
looking for a few more people to help us brainstorm ideas and develop directional plans for the next 18

Self Introductions
First impressions are lasting impressions, so when making self introductions, remember that it is only
an introduction. It should be 7-9 seconds long and it should contain:
• Your name
• The name of your company (and if allowed a short phrase describing your service/product)
Tips for making self introductions:
• Always stand and face the majority of the room while making your introduction.
• If you are in the middle of the room, turn as you say your name and business.
• Speak clearly, slowly and loudly.
• Smile and make eye contact.

On which side do I wear my name tag? That’s the age-old question in networking, but the good news
is there’s a simple answer.
Being a Leader in Your Business

Overall, they must be well-adjusted and
have the psychological maturity to deal with
anything they are required to face.
Dominance: Leaders are often competitive,
decisive and usually enjoy overcoming
obstacles. Overall, they are assertive in their
thinking style as well as their attitude in
dealing with others.
The right is always right! (And the placement should be at about the point your armpit begins.)
Regardless of whether someone is right- or left-handed, we all shake with our right hand. As you
shake hands, you’re actually drawing the person to your right side, so it stands to reason the best place
for your name tag is on the right! Additionally, it keeps all eyes where they should be, on your face so
introductions can be made and everyone can feel comfortable.
Handshakes
No matter who you are meeting, remember that there is a great deal to be said about your handshake.
Make sure that it is always firm and uses the whole hand (thumb to thumb), never bone crushing, for
this says that you are a confident person and worth their time. Whimpy handshakes or handshakes that
only get your fingers are an indication that you don’t really value the other person.

Being a Leader in Your Business - continued
Enthusiasm: Leaders are usually seen as active,
express and energetic. They are often very optimistic
and open to change. Overall, they are generally quick
and alert and tend to be uninhibited.
Conscientiousness: Leaders are often dominated by a
sense of duty and tend to be very exacting in character.
They usually have a very high standard of excellence
and an inward desire to do their best. They also have a
need for order and tend to be very self-disciplined.
Social boldness: Leaders tend to be spontaneous
risk-takers. They are usually socially aggressive and
generally thick-skinned. Overall, they are responsive
to others and tend to be high in emotional stamina.
Self-assurance: Self-confidence and resiliency are
common traits among leaders. They tend to be free of
guild and have little or no need for approval. They are
generally unaffected by prior mistakes or failures.
Compulsiveness: Leaders are controlled and very
precise in their social interactions. Overall, they are
very protective of their integrity and reputation and
consequently tend to be socially aware and careful,
abundant in foresight, and very careful when making
decisions or determining specific actions.
Intuitiveness: Rapid changes in the world today,
combined with information overload, result in
an inability to know everything. In other words,
reasoning and logic will not get you through all
situations. In fact, more and more leaders are learning
the value of using their intuition and trusting their gut
when making decisions.
Empathy: Being able to put yourself in the other
person’s shoes is a key trait of leaders today. Without
empathy, you can’t build trust; without trust, you
will never be able to get the best effort from your
employees.
Charisma: People usually perceive leaders as
larger than life. Charisma plays a large part in
this perception. Leaders who have charisma
are able to arouse strong emotions in their
employees by defining a vision which unties
and captivates them. Using this vision, leaders
motivate employees to reach toward a future
goal by tying the goal to substantial personal
rewards and values.
Leaders are everywhere, in many shapes
and sizes, but they are rarely (if ever) born.
Circumstances and persistence are major
components in the developmental process of
any leader. It’s no different (or shouldn’t be)
in the field of colon hydrotherapy. Yes, colon
hydrotherapists are typically caring, easy-going
people. That’s where our training comes in. But
colon hydrotherapists also provide a valuable
service and need to ensure that is it perceived as
such. That’s where leadership comes in.
If you want to do better in your business, if you
want to attract better clients and better, work
on developing those areas of your personality
that you feel are not up to par. (If you’re not
sure what traits you have, ask a trust friend
or business coach to help you figure it out.)
For instance, if relating to others has always
come naturally to you, but you have trouble
making logical decisions, try learning about
tough-mindedness and how to develop more
psychological resistance. If you lack the
self-assurance to make solid decisions about
your business, find a coach who can help you
understand the value of service as a business.
Just remember, anyone can do anything they set
their mind to.

I joined I-ACT in 1994 and have served on various committees since 1995.
In 2007, I became a Board Member-at-Large and in 2009, was elected Vice
President and started my 8-year commitment to serve on the Executive Board.
I earned the Instructor Level in 1995, and became certified by NBCHT in 2002.
Attending 17 of the last 18 conventions has been my colon hydrotherapy lifeline.
I strongly believe in the tremendous value of professional associations and in
their power of action. Since 1998, I have been a member of the Florida State
Massage Therapy Association, where I served as 2nd VP of the Broward County
Chapter for six years. In 2000, they awarded me the Chapter Achievement
Award.
Joining I-ACT was one of the most valuable decisions I have ever made. Belonging to such a dynamic and
progressive professional association is an inspiration.
I have been a practicing Colon Hydrotherapist and body therapist since 1991. My passion for Colon
Hydrotherapy stems from my own dramatic health changes. The positive change that I see in my clients
inspires me to continue educating people about colon hydrotherapy.

A little something about me is my passion for improving the overall health
of my clients through education and various healing modalities, as well as
moving the colon hydrotherapy industry forward. In my current practice, I
work as a Colon Hydrotherapist Instructor, an Herbalist and Bio-Feedback
Practitioner.
My previous life was in the corporate arena beginning as a Loan Officer for 10 years, working for a
major Bank before moving to a career as a Major Account Executive where I trained corporations to
sell wireless technology. I left the corporate world in 1999 and was fortunate enough to work for Dr.
Johnathan Wright in Renton Washington. This move opened me up to a whole new world of holistic
medicine and colon hydrotherapy.
In addition to colon hydrotherapy, I am a distributor and educator for First Alternatives. We are distributors of
the AVAZZIA product line of Biofeedback Microcurrent Neuromodulators.

Association of Naturopathic Physicians’ Board of Directors.

years. I am a newly elected Board at large member and have committed
to working on the fundraising committee. Although fundraising is a new

My name is Dorothy Chandler, RN, and I have been a member of I-ACT
since 1998. My professional life includes a diverse background in

is Darlene Holloway. I am honored to be your newly elected I-ACT Board
Member At Large. I have been actively involved in colon hydrotherapy
for 32 years as an educator, therapist and in service to the profession. I
maintain a license in Colon Hydrotherapy and Massage with the State of
Florida, a Massage License with North Carolina, and am a board certified
Naturopath with the American Naturopathic Medical Certification Board
(ANMCB).
I am currently the owner of Alternative Health Center of Cary in North
Carolina. Prior to opening our doors here, I owned and operated Body
Work Therapies in Gainesville, Florida. After moving to North Carolina I
helped lead the effort for licensure in Massage Therapy for the state.
As President of the North Carolina Colon Hydrotherapy Safety Association, I have lead the effort for
colon hydrotherapy to become licensed and regulated in NC.

My name is Tiffany Jablonski, and I have been around colon hydrotherapy
for over 10 years. I was blessed to be in an office that is involved with
I-ACT, and saw the value of having an organization that is making a
difference in our profession. My love for this profession grew out of need
and looking for a way to fix my problem. I couldn’t keep my attention
away from understanding more information about how to heal myself.
And so the journey began!
My process took me to The IEI School for Colon Hydrotherapy, where I
trained with France Robert, and certified at Level 3 and National Board
in 2006. While running an ORGANIC CO-OP, I understood the love
of teaching others to heal themselves. In the past three years, I have
discovered doTERRA essential oils, and I have so enjoyed teaching other
health professionals how to integrate essential oils into their practice. I am grateful that all of my
passions have blended together to help others help themselves.
I share a wellness center (Naturally Well 2 in Apple Valley, CA) with three wonderful health
professionals. We offer our clients colon hydrotherapy, bio-electric lymphatic drainage, essential oil
education, the Lifeline Technique, cranial sacral therapy, and nutritional consulting.
As a board member, I am the committee chair for the Patron Committee, Awards Committee, Talent
Show, and Welcome Bags.

Being part of the I-ACT Board becomes part of my life. It weaves through
my daily life and other work, such as running my business, seeing clients and
teaching. I am also in my 5th year of a professional training program for bodycentered psychotherapy, and I just became a grandmother 13 weeks ago!

ways.
I was a Regional Rep for many years and chaired the Fundraising Committee.
We also formed a colon hydrotherapy group in CT this past year and challenged
the State Medical Board, who past a ruling that only medical doctors could practice colon therapy in the State
of CT. We had to get a lawyer and a lobbyist and go to hearings and get a bill raised! It took a team and an
enormous amount of time and work. Wow! We did it with the help of I-ACT! We could not have done the
legal battle without I-ACT, who donated $10,000 to our effort. Now a law has passed that you have to be
I-ACT certified in the State of CT to practice colon hydrotherapy. It will happen everywhere. So now I say,
“This is what I-ACT can do for you. Come on fabulous members! What can you do to help I-ACT?”
There is so much to do, and we need your help.
At convention, I was honored to be named the 2013 I-ACT Colon Hydrotherapist

of the Year, and just as honored to be elected your I-ACT Secretary/Treasurer in

Unlike many who join our profession, I came to colon hydrotherapy simply

because I bought a business that offered the service. Thankfully, I quickly came
to understand its importance in healthy living, went through the Foundation Level
training in March/April, 2011, and immediately joined I-ACT as a way to stay intouch with the professional community.
Much like coming to colon hydrotherapy, I fell into involvement with I-ACT
when I attended my first convention in Portland, OR, with the sole purpose
of learning and getting to know the lay of the land. Little did I know that two
important things would happen to me at this convention; 1) I learned that I was
still very teachable with much to learn, and 2) I had something of value to share
with other colon hydrotherapists.
Following the 2011 convention, I became active with the then Public Relations Committee, and within six
months was asked to co-chair the committee with Gail Naas. We developed a mission statement, changed
the name to the Marketing & PR Committee, and started looking at new ways to grow visibility for the
Association, as well as members. I was also asked to participate on a marketing panel at 2012 convention in
Chicago. What a thrill to be able to share my many years of marketing experience with colon hydrotherapy
professionals!
As my involvement grew and I continued to learn, I successfully completed the Intermediate Level training and
certification in 2013. I plan to continue to Instructor Level over the next two years, as well as take the National
Board certification exam. I presented a seminar at the North East Regional in 2013, and have been asked to do
the same for other regional meetings in the future.
While I love I-ACT and all that I am doing, I remain very active in the day-to-day operations of Inner Spa, my
wellness day spa. I have a wonderful staff of 10 passionate individuals who are dedicated to their specialties.
Currently, I see colon hydrotherapy clients about 15 hours per week, and am blessed by each and every session.
As your I-ACT Board Secretary/Treasurer, I am responsible for taking accurate minutes of all board meetings,
reviewing the financial documents and practices of the Association, and chairing the Marketing & PR
Committee. I am very pleased to report that all of these are moving along well. Board meeting minutes
are completed within a couple of days of each meeting, and the financial documents and procedures are
continuously reviewed to keep the Association on track for financial stability. We’ve already streamlined some
of the ways we are reporting/reviewing finances, and are looking at membership numbers in new ways, all with
a focus on the future.

Biltmoreís Crystal Ballroom, where according
to legend, the design for the Oscar statue was
sketched on a linen Biltmore napkin. The Crystal
Ballroom features a hand painted, 30 foot
ceiling; carved columns; and Austrian crystal
chandeliers. The second story balconies that
surround the ballroom offer a wonderful vantage
point to take in everything thatís happening
below. Eight Academy Awards banquets were
subsequently held in the Biltmore Bowl in the
1930s, with legends like Clark Gable, Walt Disney
and Ginger Rogers accepting their awards on the
Biltmore stage.
In 1960, JFK set up headquarters for the
Democratic National Convention in the Music
Room which is now the Lobby. In 1964, during
their first world tour, the Beatles landed on the
roof via helicopter to escape crowds of fans on
the street. They sought refuge in the Presidential
Suite. Numerous movies and TV programs have been filmed in this magnificent hotel.
Although the hotel has been updated with state-of-the-art amenities, such as audio and visual for meetings,
the opulence and Renaissance interiors have pretty much stayed the same.

While I love I-ACT and all that I am doing, I remain very active in the day-to-day operations of Inner Spa, my
wellness day spa. I have a wonderful staff of 10 passionate individuals who are dedicated to their specialties.
Currently, I see colon hydrotherapy clients about 15 hours per week, and am blessed by each and every session.
As your I-ACT Board Secretary/Treasurer, I am responsible for taking accurate minutes of all board meetings,
reviewing the financial documents and practices of the Association, and chairing the Marketing & PR
Committee. I am very pleased to report that all of these are moving along well. Board meeting minutes
are completed within a couple of days of each meeting, and the financial documents and procedures are
continuously reviewed to keep the Association on track for financial stability. We’ve already streamlined some
of the ways we are reporting/reviewing finances, and are looking at membership numbers in new ways, all with
a focus on the future.

I joined I-ACT in 1994 and have served on various committees since 1995.
In 2007, I became a Board Member-at-Large and in 2009, was elected Vice
President and started my 8-year commitment to serve on the Executive Board.
I earned the Instructor Level in 1995, and became certified by NBCHT in 2002.
Attending 17 of the last 18 conventions has been my colon hydrotherapy lifeline.
I strongly believe in the tremendous value of professional associations and in
their power of action. Since 1998, I have been a member of the Florida State
Massage Therapy Association, where I served as 2nd VP of the Broward County
Chapter for six years. In 2000, they awarded me the Chapter Achievement
Award.
Joining I-ACT was one of the most valuable decisions I have ever made. Belonging to such a dynamic and
progressive professional association is an inspiration.
I have been a practicing Colon Hydrotherapist and body therapist since 1991. My passion for Colon
Hydrotherapy stems from my own dramatic health changes. The positive change that I see in my clients

My previous life was in the corporate arena beginning as a Loan Officer for 10 years, working for a
major Bank before moving to a career as a Major Account Executive where I trained corporations to
sell wireless technology. I left the corporate world in 1999 and was fortunate enough to work for Dr.
Johnathan Wright in Renton Washington. This move opened me up to a whole new world of holistic
medicine and colon hydrotherapy.
In addition to colon hydrotherapy, I am a distributor and educator for First Alternatives. We are distributors of
the AVAZZIA product line of Biofeedback Microcurrent Neuromodulators.

Association of Naturopathic Physicians’ Board of Directors.

Being a Leader in Your Business - continued
Enthusiasm: Leaders are usually seen as active,
express and energetic. They are often very optimistic
and open to change. Overall, they are generally quick
and alert and tend to be uninhibited.
Conscientiousness: Leaders are often dominated by a
sense of duty and tend to be very exacting in character.
They usually have a very high standard of excellence
and an inward desire to do their best. They also have a
need for order and tend to be very self-disciplined.
Social boldness: Leaders tend to be spontaneous
risk-takers. They are usually socially aggressive and
generally thick-skinned. Overall, they are responsive
to others and tend to be high in emotional stamina.
Self-assurance: Self-confidence and resiliency are
common traits among leaders. They tend to be free of
guild and have little or no need for approval. They are
generally unaffected by prior mistakes or failures.
Compulsiveness: Leaders are controlled and very
precise in their social interactions. Overall, they are
very protective of their integrity and reputation and
consequently tend to be socially aware and careful,
abundant in foresight, and very careful when making
decisions or determining specific actions.
Intuitiveness: Rapid changes in the world today,
combined with information overload, result in
an inability to know everything. In other words,
reasoning and logic will not get you through all
situations. In fact, more and more leaders are learning
the value of using their intuition and trusting their gut
when making decisions.
Empathy: Being able to put yourself in the other
person’s shoes is a key trait of leaders today. Without
empathy, you can’t build trust; without trust, you
will never be able to get the best effort from your
employees.
Charisma: People usually perceive leaders as
larger than life. Charisma plays a large part in
this perception. Leaders who have charisma
are able to arouse strong emotions in their
employees by defining a vision which unties
and captivates them. Using this vision, leaders
motivate employees to reach toward a future
goal by tying the goal to substantial personal
rewards and values.
Leaders are everywhere, in many shapes
and sizes, but they are rarely (if ever) born.
Circumstances and persistence are major
components in the developmental process of
any leader. It’s no different (or shouldn’t be)
in the field of colon hydrotherapy. Yes, colon
hydrotherapists are typically caring, easy-going
people. That’s where our training comes in. But
colon hydrotherapists also provide a valuable
service and need to ensure that is it perceived as
such. That’s where leadership comes in.
If you want to do better in your business, if you
want to attract better clients and better, work
on developing those areas of your personality
that you feel are not up to par. (If you’re not
sure what traits you have, ask a trust friend
or business coach to help you figure it out.)
For instance, if relating to others has always
come naturally to you, but you have trouble
making logical decisions, try learning about
tough-mindedness and how to develop more
psychological resistance. If you lack the
self-assurance to make solid decisions about
your business, find a coach who can help you
understand the value of service as a business.
Just remember, anyone can do anything they set
their mind to.

We are currently working on some new opportunities to help gain visibility for
the Association as well as individual members. One initiative is to bring more
content to our Quarterly newsletters; there are several such articles included in
this issue, so we hope you enjoy reading them.
Another initiative that is being discussed is the development of a “best practices
guide” for all colon hydrotherapists to use. So many of you have reported
that you have had success with your marketing efforts, that we’d like to begin
compiling these to share amongst our members. If you have a marketing success
story you’d like to share, please send it to the I-ACT Office.
Our mission statement: The I-ACT Marketing & Public Relations Committee
Chair
is responsible to build awareness of and support for colon hydrotherapy as a
profession as well as a valuable modality through global marketing, education, effective communications,
and relationship building among its members and associates, the medical community and the general
public.
Finally, if you’d like to get involved in the Marketing & PR Committee, please let me know. We’re
looking for a few more people to help us brainstorm ideas and develop directional plans for the next 18

Self Introductions
First impressions are lasting impressions, so when making self introductions, remember that it is only
an introduction. It should be 7-9 seconds long and it should contain:
• Your name
• The name of your company (and if allowed a short phrase describing your service/product)
Tips for making self introductions:
• Always stand and face the majority of the room while making your introduction.
• If you are in the middle of the room, turn as you say your name and business.
• Speak clearly, slowly and loudly.
• Smile and make eye contact.

On which side do I wear my name tag? That’s the age-old question in networking, but the good news
is there’s a simple answer.
Being a Leader in Your Business
Psychology tests have been around for years.
They help determine what characteristics are
most commonly noted among successful leaders.
They also help people gain insights and develop
individual leadership styles. Businesses, small
and large, have used these for years to help
maintain their level of performance and keep the
status quo.
In today’s marketplace, keeping the status quo is
not enough for most businesses. The leaders of
tomorrow are visionaries who learn and teach.
These leaders not only see paradigm changes in
society, they also have a strong sense of ethics
and work to build integrity in their organizations.
So what does all this mean for colon
hydrotherapists? In order to be a good leaders
in your business and the industry, you must
consider what character traits you possess.

equation developed in 1954 by Raymond
Cattell, a pioneer in the field of personality
assessment, the traits of an effective leader
include the following:
Emotional stability: Good leaders must
be able to tolerate frustration and stress.
Overall, they must be well-adjusted and
have the psychological maturity to deal with
anything they are required to face.
Dominance: Leaders are often competitive,
decisive and usually enjoy overcoming
obstacles. Overall, they are assertive in their
thinking style as well as their attitude in
dealing with others.
The right is always right! (And the placement should be at about the point your armpit begins.)
Regardless of whether someone is right- or left-handed, we all shake with our right hand. As you
shake hands, you’re actually drawing the person to your right side, so it stands to reason the best place
for your name tag is on the right! Additionally, it keeps all eyes where they should be, on your face so
introductions can be made and everyone can feel comfortable.
Handshakes
No matter who you are meeting, remember that there is a great deal to be said about your handshake.
Make sure that it is always firm and uses the whole hand (thumb to thumb), never bone crushing, for
this says that you are a confident person and worth their time. Whimpy handshakes or handshakes that
only get your fingers are an indication that you don’t really value the other person.

The following letter was sent to all I-ACT Instructors and Schools:
Dear Schools and Instructors,
As we prepare for 2014, it is time to renew your Instructor and School certification.
There are a few changes to our guidelines that each School/Instructor must be aware of.
First, in response to questions from legislators, the I-ACT Board has standardized the duration of
the Foundation Level training. The meaning of “completing a 100 hour (in the classroom) course
of Colon Hydrotherapy training from an I-ACT approved School and/or an I-ACT Certified
Instructor” is modified to now mean that the training must be done in the physical presence of
the Instructor at the location of the school or “brick and mortar” training facility used by the
school or instructor. Distance learning of any type may not be used in fulfilling the 100 hour
requirement for I-ACT training.
Second, the I-ACT Board has established that the 100 hours of training may not be completed any
faster than 10 days. This means that the minimum time an I-ACT Instructor or School may train,
or advertise to train, an individual is 10 days at the School or Brick and mortar facility of the
Next, the I-ACT Board has just made a couple of modifications to our syllabi. These changes affect our Instructor Requirements.
All Schools/Instructors must send the following documents to the I-ACT Office no later than April 1, 2014:
1. Copy of your Application (the application your new student signs to enter your training)
2. Copy of your Enrollment Agreement/Contract of Training (the agreement/contract your student signs
that outlines the training they will receive from you or your school, the expectations that you have for student
attendance/participation/behavior while in school, and, your refund policy for your school in case the student
does not conclude the training).
3. A copy of the schedule of training (outlines the course work, by Section and Unit from the syllabi that
will be taught each day).

committee is to assist the membership in growth, by providing education
and international communications, increase member benefits, aid with
member satisfaction to achieve an increased rate of recruitment, retention and
recognition.
Our association’s growth is essential to accomplish our goals. Our goals can
be easily achieved if each one of us invites 1 new member to join. Please reach

This committee has sub-committees that include: Awards Committee, Patron
Members Committee, and a newly established International Liaison Committee. Other Board members are
chairs of these committees and will include information about these in their reports.
When the Office receives the above referenced documents from each School/Instructor, the documents will be logged in and
forwarded to the Senior Education Committee for review and acceptance. Documents that do not meet the Committee standards
will be returned for modification. Each Instructor/School must have their documents approved by the end of the 2014
Convention.
Now, a couple of reminders:
First, remember that the School/Instructor must submit the transcript for training within 14 days of the completion of
training. If a student departs the class and does not complete training, the School/Instructor must document, on the transcript, the
portion of training that was completed and send that to the office within 14 days of the student’s departure from training.
Second, remember that you must be NBCHT Certified to teach any students for I-ACT. If you are not NBCHT Certified,
you will be at the Provisional Instructor level of certification.
Third, remember that you must attend the Mandatory School/Instructor meeting at the 2014 Convention. The mandatory
meeting for all instructors and schools on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at the Millennium Biltmore, Los Angeles, CA. As you know,
Schools must attend this meeting every year and Instructors must attend once every two years. If you did not attend the 2013
Convention you MUST attend this year. Schools/Instructors are only excused for the most dire of circumstances.
If you don’t/can’t make the mandatory meeting, you must complete one of the options that the I-ACT Board has approved, or
you will be placed on Provisional Instructor status and may not train students. The options are to take the online Webinar; or to
purchase the DVD of the Mandatory School / Instructor meeting, complete the exam, and write an essay of 2000 words on the
meeting.

During 2013, I-ACT members witnessed two states, Colorado and
Connecticut, enact laws granting the right to practice colon hydrotherapy
legally.
Understanding the impact individual citizens working collectively can
have on the legislative process is indeed a rewarding experience. Colon
hydrotherapists, in their respective states, participated in this process by
lobbying legislators and educating clients, state senators and representatives to
gain their support. A few even had the opportunity to testifying in support of
their respective bills.

Illinois, I-ACT members, along with other colon hydrotherapist, introduced
legislation that was later withdrawn after a mutually negotiated agreement with the states’ agency for
licensing. Recently, I-ACT has become aware that two cities in Illinois have blocked business licenses
for non-medical colon hydrotherapists.
Becoming an active participant includes gaining understanding of:
• How bills are developed and introduced.
• Finding a committed sponsor to carry the bill.
• Interviewing, hiring and working with a lobbyist.
• All strategic planning involving the bill becoming a law.
Raising awareness on how the state legislative process works has become imperative, if we are to
gain the right to practice. I-ACT members in CO and CT got involved and were vital participants in
protecting their right to practice.

The Spring Mid West regional meeting was held in St. Louis, MO, on October 19,
2013. Five members were present. It was hosted by John Schmieder of Community
Acupuncture of St. Louis and Angie Smith of Holistic Wellness.
An update on the new I-ACT Board was given. We reviewed the various committees
and chairs, with an emphasis on finding one or two committees to join in order to
advance our profession. We also reviewed the T-shirt contest and the ease with which
they can create their own design on line.
Our Round table discussion brought up some questions about how to safely and legally
continue our right to practice. The drawings for I-ACT gifts were appreciated, with all
preference for the intellectual materials.
John Schmieder lectured on “Acupuncture Points to Improve Digestion.” He gave us
some simple tips to share with our clients. It was informative.
Our hosts outdid themselves. Room and board for the Regional Rep were provided by
Community Acupuncture and Holistic Wellness at a hotel near the meeting site. (St.
Louis is about 350 miles from my home). Angie and John met me at the hotel and took me out to dinner the night
before. We discussed concerns and topics to be covered at the meeting. It was so gorgeous and thoughtful of them.

The previous board came up with the idea of creating a cookbook to support raising funds.
One of my missions as newly elected board member is to continue the goal. I think it’s
much needed. As we approach our 25th year anniversary, I believe this would be a great
accomplishment that we as a group can be proud of. Over the last couple of months I have
sent out 2 letters asking for volunteers to help with formatting, recipes, creating, etc. I am
so happy that Judith M. Toscano, ND (Dr. Jude) from Lotus Wellness Cottage in Stuart, VA,
and Diana Loze from Mississauga , ON, have offered to help with creating the book. We’ve
decided this cookbook is going to be different from the average book. It’s geared more at
the questions our clients are asking such as gluten free foods, candida diet, what to eat
before and after a colonic, etc. If you are interested in helping us complete the cookbook,
please contact me at the email listed below.
We are open to any idea’s to help keep the fundraising account afloat and tangible without
donating too much of our own money. I am also hoping to find volunteers to join me
on this venture to raise money. Please email me with any ideas or let me know if you’re
interested in helping.
We look forward to taking on the process of reenergizing and refocusing certain aspects of
our industry.

While researching another topic, the legal definition
used by attorneys of the Standard of Care for medical
practitioners came to mind. This legal definition is the
framework used to evaluate healthcare practitioners
actions. It presumes that the actions of all healthcare
practitioners’ having the same training and skills will
follow the accepted and recognized practice for that
profession.
For example, the treatment of a heart attack or stroke
by an emergency room physician in the Midwest would
be the same on the West and East coast. A state or
regions local practice takes a back seat to the accepted
standards of practice for such treatment. The standards
are recognized nationally.

The association has the expectation that its therapist members:
• (1) Possess an exceptional skill and knowledge above that of general
public. John or Jane Q. Public cannot be expected to know how to
operate the device or truly know what to expect from the session,
especially their first experience.
• (2) That the skill or knowledge each member therapist possesses,
establishes an obligation on the part of the member to act in a
reasonable or sound manner when providing colon hydrotherapy
services. Because you are an I-ACT member, you have access to the
most current SOP (Standard Operating Procedures, Regulations and
Guidelines).
• (3) That another therapist having the same or similar skills and
knowledge would behave in a like manner. Instructors providing
I-ACT training have access to the same syllabi and guidelines.
• (4) I-ACT has provided its members the SOP as a guideline and each
I-ACT therapist using Class 1 and 2 devices has a contraindication list
provided by the manufacturer of that device.
Remember, we have exceptional skills as colon hydrotherapy professionals.
Providing a colon hydrotherapy session on any device requires knowledge
and judgment above the level of the general public.

During 2013, nine grievances were filed against I-ACT members. Areas of
concern continue to center on instructors and training.
While we understand that disagreements between instructors and students may
occur, instructors are strongly encouraged to provide a contract before the
first day of class, which identifies all school/training policies. Interview your
potential student to access their fit for your program.
If you are providing a mentorship form of training, meaning the student may
have a 1:1 experience with you, make sure your student knows this before
start of class. Follow the I-ACT requirement for Foundation training -100 inclass hours.
Consider revising your refund policy if no refund is currently provided.
Having a NO REFUND UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE is in my opinion harsh. Life happens,
circumstances change. Additionally, many states have consumer protection laws that allow for a percentage
of the monies paid to be refunded. Check your states’ regulations.

Lastly, if the student leaves training before finishing the complete course, please remember to submit an
official transcript to the I-ACT office, providing the hours and course material taught even if the case is
litigated in court. Include the A & P and CPR if this has been completed. Your compliance with I-ACT
guidelines, allows the student an opportunity to continue training with another instructor.
Our clients, association and the general public benefit by the professionalism each of us displays. Lets work

The Mid-Atlantic regional meeting took place on Saturday, October 19, 2013.
Even though the day was cloudy and overcast, the room was filled with warmth and
rays of sunshine with knowledge being exchanged. In attendance were: nine (9) I-ACT

As we review 2013, we have been blessed to have
some major successes in our legislative efforts. We
have learned many important lessons from these
successes.
1.We must be unified in our efforts. It only
takes one individual to kill support for a bill.
2.We have found out that the legislators are
serious about professionalism and appropriate
training.
3.Our twenty-five years of hard work building
our image is paying off.

Congratulations to everyone for helping us become
the premier colon hydrotherapy association in the
world.
I would like to recognize the efforts of Richard
Armstrong, from the UK, for solidifying an InterAssociation agreement for the profession of
Colon Hydrotherapy. This document, between
I-ACT, ARCH, RICTAT, and IPCH, sets “common
standards” for our profession. We are waiting for all
associations to sign this agreement. It will be on the
I-ACT web site once all signatures are received.
Speaking of this quarterly, I have asked each
Committee Chair provide you a short bio in addition
to their Committee report. Please review the
Committee Reports and, if you believe their efforts
are important, then volunteeer your time to assist
that committee.
As I look forward to 2014, it is my dream to
increase the size of our Association. We’ve
learned there is strength in numbers, so we need
to expand our membership base. All of us know of
colon hydrotherapists that are not members of our
Association. Become pro-active and help these
individuals understand the value of becoming an
I-ACT member.

Convention this year in Los
Angeles, CA.
I can promise you that this convention will exceed
all previous conventions. We will honor all of our
previous Board Members. In addition, your Board
is working hard to bring you a superb selection of
speakers. For example, if you believe that the pH
values help you to maintain greater health, then you
will enjoy listening to one of our keynote speakers,
Dr. Robert O. Young, the author of The pH Miracle:
Balance Your Diet, Reclaim Your Health.
Or, perhaps you will be interested in hearing from
Dr. Naina Sachdev, the former ambassador for Olay
Regenerist Proctor & Gamble skin care line. She
is an international educator and speaker on cutting
edge women’s wellness issues and on bioidentical
hormone replacement therapy. You can’t miss this
presentation.
Our location, the magnificent Millenium Biltmore,
is breathtaking. Register early to reserve your
space. We anticipate selling out this convention.
Hopefully, this brief preview is enough to inspire
you to register for our 2014 Convention, and be part
of the excitement!
As we look forward to 2014, I hope your holiday was
full of all of the joy this season brings, and, I hope
you were able to take time for yourself.
It is important to take time to focus on our personal
well-being also. Remember, to help others, you must
take care of yourself. You are important to us and
you are valued.

Following is a list of our new members for the period November 1, 2013 through December 31, 2013.

I-ACT recommends the use of currently registered FDA equipment and only disposable speculums, rectal
tubes, or rectal nozzles. However, should the Therapist use reusable speculums, these speculums should, at a
minimum, be autoclaved for sanitation and cleanliness (30 minutes). Additionally, the autoclave unit must be
tested and inspected by competent authority at least four times per year- maintain documentation. (Under NO
conditions should a disposable speculum or rectal tube be reused).
I-ACT recognizes the FDA classifies equipment used to instill water into the colon through a nozzle inserted
into the rectum to evacuate the contents of the colon into three distinct classes; Class I (Enema Kits), Class II
and Class III are (Colon Irrigation Systems). Follow the guidelines of your manufacturer, as approved by the
FDA for the type of equipment (devices) you are using. Make no claims as to the use of your device other
than those approved by the FDA.
The main differences between Class I and Class II devices:
The code of federal regulations CFR 876.5210 & 876.5220 describe the differences between the Class I and
the Class II devices. From that regulation, a Class I device is an enema system and does not include “colonic
irrigation devices”. A “colon irrigation device” is a Class II device, which in part is described as: “The
system is designed to allow evacuation of the contents of the colon during the administration of the colonic
irrigation.
The Class I Device:
· The Class I device is defined as an enema system and may not have temperature control, temperature
gauges or water purification as part of the device. Class I enema systems must be self-administered.
· Manufacturers of Class I devices are not required to have third party oversight as they need not comply
with the good manufacturing practices and record keeping that are required of Class II manufacturers.
Class I devices are not as heavily regulated and controlled by the FDA as Class II devices are.
· Owners of Class I devices may not market their service using the terms “colonics or colonic irrigation”
in describing the scope of their practice of evacuating the contents of the lower bowel.
The Class II Device:
· The Class II Device is a “colonic irrigation device”.
· Manufacturers of Class II devices are required to have third party oversight and must comply with the
good manufacturing practices and record keeping that are required by the FDA. Class II devices are
heavily regulated and controlled by the FDA.
· The FDA requires Class II devices to be sold and used on or at the order of a physician or health care
practitioner. This may be different in each state.
Although I-ACT is not aware of any laws that preclude you from assisting an individual with an enema,
I-ACT does want you to consider upgrading your equipment to the equipment that provides the greatest safeguards to the public. In this profession, that would be equipment marketed as Class II devices.
Remember that I-ACT strongly recommends that all I-ACT members use FDA registered Class II devices or
devices equivalent to Class II devices regulated by the appropriate agency in your country. Only individuals
using FDA registered equipment will be placed on the I-ACT Web Site. Purchase equipment at your own
risk. Ensure you are in compliance with your local, state, federal and country guidelines. Ensure that equipment you purchase is cleared for use in your country.
I-ACT recognizes there are two distinct types of colon irrigation systems; open and closed systems. However,
it is I-ACT policy that the colon hydrotherapist / technician is always in attendance / or is immediately
available to the client throughout the session. The degree of assistance is to be in compliance with the
instructions of the manufacturer of the equipment as registered with the FDA, and/or as directed by a
physician.

I-ACT recommends that you do not put the initials (CT) for colon hydrotherapist after your name, write it out
in full. According to most state laws, putting initials after your name is not allowed unless you are licensed or
have a degree from an accredited professional school.
Advertising copy which states or implies that colon hydrotherapy can treat any disease, promise cure for any
disease, or that makes unsubstantiated medical claims SHALL NOT be used.
