2010 Annual Report - Colon Cancer Coalition
2010 Annual Report
A Letter From Our Founder
Get Your Rear in Gear events continue to gain significant attention in the media, medical, political and business
communities. We have received national news coverage on Fox News, partnered with American Society of Colon and
Rectal Surgeons, and made progress in Washington D.C. to get legislation passed for research and treatment programs.
On both the local and national level, our investment partners are recognized for their support of this important cause.
Our goals for each event include:
• Maximizing participant numbers through public service announcements, media partnerships and grassroots networking
• Marketing efforts that include social media such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube
• Developing new incentives for team building to increase fundraising dollars and increase event participation
• Event invitations to political, medical and business leaders to increase media attention and awareness
Each of these steps helps us to bring an important message to the community:
colon cancer screening saves lives. After each event, 75% of funds raised stay in
the community for treatment, education or quality of life programs. In this way,
patients, family members, and residents of the community continue to benefit
from the Get Your Rear in Gear event throughout the year.
Sincerely,
Kristin Tabor
President and Founder
Get Your Rear in Gear Events
A Letter From Our Executive Director
Get Your Rear in Gear events are the main function of the Colon Cancer Coalition. The races we produce bring people
and communities across the United States together to raise awareness and screening rates for colon cancer. Looking
back on 2010, I am overwhelmed with what our organization has accomplished. We experienced a near 50-percent
increase in the number of races we plan across the country and are on track for a healthy increase in 2011. We have
established collaborative relationships between healthcare professionals, patients, government, industry and the media,
while enhancing our web and social media presence.
Most importantly, the dedication of our employees, affiliate volunteers, donors and sponsors, the Colon Cancer Coalition
increased the number and amount of grants going back into the community.
The Colon Cancer Coalition continues to work to make colon cancer a topic of conversation in every household. We work
to put it on public and donor agendas, and build local capacity particularly in areas of the medically underserved where
cancer presents a growing challenge to public health. We work in partnership with comprehensive cancer groups across
the U.S. to prevent a united front in this work.
We are inspired to act by the memory of those we have lost in the past year, the courage of
those still fighting and the commitment of all those who support them. Our mission continues
to evolve and expand. With your continued support we will do our best to do as much as
we can.
Thank you to our event affiliates, volunteers, donors, sponsors and supporters, who give so
freely of time and financial resources to help us continue our mission.
Sincerely,
Anne Carlson-Davis
Executive Director
Get Your Rear in Gear Events
Who We Are
History
Get Your Rear in Gear® began as a tribute to Susie Lindquist Mjelde who passed away in 2002 at
the age of 46. In 2005, her sister, Kristin Lindquist Tabor, an avid runner, recruited her running club
to plan an awareness-building, fundraising race in her memory. That first race attracted over 1,200
people, shattering estimates that the race would draw 500. Six years later, Get Your Rear in Gear
has expanded nationally and grown to nearly 40 events nationwide. In 2011, Get Your Rear in Gear
events will draw over 30,000 runners and walkers. Since 2005, the organization has raised over
$1,000,000 for colon cancer awareness and prevention programs. By making the words colon,
colorectal and colonoscopy a part of the everyday language, we believe we can overcome the fear
and decrease deaths from this largely preventable cancer.
Mission Statement
The mission of Get Your Rear in Gear is to ensure that all citizens have adequate information and
access to screening for colon cancer.
Vision Statement
To establish a colon cancer event and/or align with an existing event in every state to help raise
awareness and funds in order to adequately fund colon cancer activities.

Community Investments:
The Colon Cancer Coalition invests funds into community programs that provide
cancer screenings to those who are under or un-insured, education to the medical and
lay communities about advances in colon cancer treatment and prevention, and
support for those who are affected by the disease. In 2010, these programs include:
SAGE Scopes Screening Program, a division of the Minnesota Department of Health, which provides colon
cancer screening and treatment services to Minnesotans who are under- or non-insured.
San Francisco Strides for Life, which provides programs of public education, wide scale screening
efforts and risk-reduction strategies directed toward populations at high risk.
REX Healthcare Lecture Series and Outreach Campaign which establishes physician lectures, a tumor
board, patient lecture series and an outreach and awareness campaign in the Raleigh area.
American Cancer Society (partnership) Awareness and Education Campaign to emphasize the
importance of early detection and screening to a grassroots network of more than 15,000
constituents in the Raleigh area.
Philadelphia JAWS Youth Fund a program which celebrates health and wellness at any age, in any form.
Activities include free medical screening and exercise activities.
Thomas Jefferson University and Hospital, Department of Colorectal Surgery and the Kimmel Cancer
Center where funds support leading-edge research in colon cancer and compassionate care.
The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorder/Gastrointestinal Cancer Center of Excellence which
provides educational information about the prevention and treatment of colon cancer.
National Hispanic Awareness Campaign, providing educational materials and screening opportunities to the
Hispanic population.
