Tennis Celebration 4
The present state of tennis in Ventura is on the rise. We had a successful Memorial
Day community tennis event with racket demos, ball machine drills, and king of the
court with Scott Burton. The food was great and the company even better. We plan to
do it again over the Labor Day weekend. We will also elect officers for our club during that time
In an effort to promote tennis locally we are helping with fundraising for the resurfacing of the courts at Buena High School (Camino Real resurfacing is pending depending on the amount that can be raised). The Buena courts will be necessary to host the
State Community College Tournament in our county next year and the courts will be
available on the weekends for public events as well as club events. Looking forward
to continued success for our club activities, mixed, men’s and women’s doubles etc.

VENTURA TENNIS CLUB COMMUNITY TENNIS DAY
May 26 was the date for the first VTC bi-annual Community Tennis Day at
Camino Real Park. The day started off with volley drills, racket demos, Quick
Start clinics for kids 10 and under. This free event turned out to be a big success and will be an on-going event for the club. Our thanks to Nelson Emery,
Hoss Salehi, Scott Burton, Paul Olmsted and Andy Hoerer, and the other volunteers who ran the clinics.
A delicious bar-b-que lunch was served up to over 100 hungry folks. Lester
Tong was chief cook grilling with Leonard Young, Don Scott and Mike
Kilpatrick. Serving up all the bbq items was Margaret Parsadanyan, who tried
to cover all the bases. Linda Forsyth, the Social Director and coordinator for
these events, put together a fun menu and it appeared to be enjoyed as
well. Several individuals brought goodies and they were gobbled up in no
time. After the morning clinics and lunch, came the round robin doubles tennis. Players stayed a couple of hours playing in the perfect Ventura
weather.. A good time was had by all. Hope to see more of you at the next
event! Your support is what keeps these events happening.
Until next time..

DAVID DIKE MEMORIAL RETRO TENNIS CELEBRATION
Dave Dike Retro Tennis Celebration 2012
By Andy B. Hoerer
Start with a stunningly beautiful day… add great music, memories, food, friends, and, of
course, OLD SCHOOL TENNIS. That’s what the Dave Dike Retro Tennis Celebration is all
about!
On Sunday, July 1st, the Ventura Tennis Club hosted the second Annual DD Retro event.
We had a record 35 players this year. White tennis balls, rock-and-roll from the 50’s, 60’s,
and 70’s, pizza, snacks; brownies, and beer (LOTS of beer) were the backdrop for this funfilled afternoon of old school tennis. The rackets of choice seemed to be the wooden Wilson Jack Kramer, followed closely by the aluminum Head Master, and Yamaha’s fiberglass
YFG50. Playing with the heavy old rackets with tiny sweetspots, you really had to watch
the ball closely. Players did great though – no broken rackets this year! Following Dave
Dike’s motto of “Whoever has the most fun wins,” we had many, many winners this year,
as you can tell from the pictures.
Thanks to everyone who came out for this event. Special thanks to Lloyd, who did an
amazing job with the cd's. Thanks to Chuck for making sure we had music. Thanks to
Carl, Randy, and Mike K. for bringing extra rackets. Thanks to Lester and Linda for their
help with all the setting up, organizing, and ice. Thanks to Matt, Linda, Paul V. and Marv
for pizza delivery and pictures. And, of course, thanks to my family, Chelsea and Joni, for
their hard work in the tie-dye booth. The shirts came out groovy! Let me end with a quote
from Bella, a first-time player in our retro:
…a great event . .. everyone was fun to play with and socialize with, the music made
the day as well, it was such a beautiful day that I just hung around enjoying watching
some matches and listening to the good feeling music.”

The VTC Women’s
Doubles Tournament
was held Saturday, July
21 at Camino Real
Park. There were seven
teams and nice sunny
skies and warm
weather. The format
was a 5 game round
robin with no-ad scoring. The round robin
winners and runners up
were Kanoko Esheim
and Lynne Krueger,
and Marla Burg and
Louise Hewitt respectively. The two teams
met for a one set winner and runner up decision. In the set, a tie
breaker was played at 5
all and the winners
were Marla Burg and
Louise Hewitt, 6-5.
Both teams were
awarded a prize.
Thanks to Gary Reeder
and Linda Forsyth for
their help in hosting the
tournament.

“You’ve Been Served” Goes To Sectionals
IT NEVER GETS LESS EXCITING!
Once again VTC “You’ve Been
Served” made Ventura
Tennis Club proud. Captain and Co-Captain Becky
Spires and Margaret Parsadanyan took the 7.0 Mixed
Doubles Team to compete in the 2012 Southern
California Sectionals at Whittier Narrows June 9 &
10.. With an 11-1 record we had high hopes. Every
year, sectionals teams get tougher, but so do we.
It was an incredible weekend of tennis and camaraderie
plus extra team members came and cheered us on. It’s
always good to hear familiar voices in the crowd.
Although top honors eluded us this year, we made it to
the semi-finals; losing 1-2 to a club from Poway.
There’s always next year!! You can count on it!

NELSON EMERY
CRP DIRECTOR OF TENNIS AND VTC MEMBER
VTC members and their children are often seen taking tennis lessons from the staff of Nelson
Emery, Director of Tennis for the City of Ventura. His home away from home is Camino Real
Park (CRP), the largest tennis complex in Ventura and the home of our own Ventura Tennis
Club.
Nelson has a proud history in Ventura. Starting back in 1984, while he taught tennis for fellow
VTC member Marty McNair, he was concurrently a tournament player for Ventura College.
From 1984 to 1985, he attended Cal State Bakersfield on a tennis scholarship. He graduated
and returned to Ventura and taught along side state tennis legend, Arnie Saul. From 1989 to
1993, he was hired as the tennis coach for St. Bonaventure High School. While there, he
coached matches against Santa Paula High School tennis Coach and former VTC member,
Dave Dike (who has our Retro Racket tournament named after him).
From 1994 to 1995, Nelson moved down the street to assume the coaching duties at Ventura
High School. He also ambitiously taught for the Pierpont Racquet Club from 1991 to
2000. In 2001, he accepted his current position as Director of Tennis at Camino Real Park. In
1996 he became the Assistant Tennis Coach at Ventra College and a year later the Head Coach
for both the men's and women's teams. Nelson is still coaching and winning at Ventura College, attaining the Men's Western States Community College Conference titles for eleven of
the past twelve years. This year, his women's team won the State wide team title along with
the individual Singles and Doubles titles.
Although Ventura College offers no scholarships, Nelson has attracted players from Australia,
France, England, Brazil, Venezuela, Africa, Ecuador, Sweden, Switzerland, Belarus, Canada
and Holland. Another big achievement will occur next year prior to the Ojai Tournament
when Ventura host the Community College Championships, using courts at CRP, Ventura College and Buena High School. (Look for some resurfacing projects at those courts later this
year). In the meantime, take some lessons from Nelson and his staff and learn the secrets of
winning State Tennis Championships.~ Kent Bodin
