Grade-Level Gatherings for Elementary Children
Now that everyone has had the chance to get back into school and sports/activity routines, we would like to rally
everyone to participate in our elementary fellowship gatherings so that our kids have the chance to build upon and
reconnect with their Sunday School friends. The current need is for parent volunteers to help host these events. No
pressure to host at your home! The SignUpGenius site below will provide you with event suggestions and more
information on how this works.

5th http://tinyurl.com/5fellowship
2nd http://tinyurl.com/2fellowship
4th http://tinyurl.com/4fellowship
If the site asks for a password, use: children. Our goal is to have an event for each age group every quarter. You
choose a grade level (K-5), and a quarter (2-3 month period) that you would like to host. Decide upon a date/time
and venue for our kids to socialize and build connections, and coordinate that event through Missy Spears
(704.287.0211 or [email protected]), our chair.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dear Parents of K-5th Graders,
We hope you are having a wonderful Fall! We want to be sure your child is included in all of the activities and
programs our congregation provides for their age group. In order to streamline this process we are:
1) Having parents update their child’s information, so that we can be prepared for them and their needs while they
are with us at church and on church outings. For this we have asked parents to complete a Child Information
Form.
2) Sending out a Children’s Ministry Newsletter every other week. If you have not received this yet, please update
your email address on the Child Information Form &/or email me ([email protected]) your preferred
email address.

First Presbyterian Prayer Ministry
The Prayer Ministry of FPC seeks to support this community of faith through intercessory
prayer and education. If you would like to be on the church’s prayer list, please contact
the church office or any of the pastors. If you would like prayer for a need that is causing
you fear or any concern join a member of the Prayer Ministry Team and a pastor
in the overflow area after the 9 am service and in the chapel after the 11 am service.
If we truly love people, we want for them far more than we have power to give, and this leads to prayer. Intercession is
a way of loving others.
Tuesday Bible Study Explores
Metaphor
Wearing God: Clothing, Laughter, Fire, and
Other Overlooked Ways of Meeting God
January 12 – February 2 | 11:45-1:15
When it comes to talking about God, our language is limited. Even though
there are more than a million words in the English language, it’s impossible to
come up with a comprehensive description of who God is or how God chooses
to be in relationship with us.
Enter metaphor. That handy literary device that asks us to use our imaginations in how we think. In the church, we have long used metaphors for God
that have been given to us in Scripture: God as shepherd, God as king, God as
light.
Those metaphors are helpful but also come with their own limitations.
In her latest book Wearing God, Lauren Winner explores other lesser-known
but equally-powerful Scriptural images of God and challenges her readers to
spend time with these other metaphors and allow them to expand our understanding of who God is.
Over a course of four weeks, Katelyn Gordon and the group will go in-depth with four different
Scriptural images of God and discuss how these particular images connect with our day-to-day lives.

Serving Our Neighbor
he gifts we have received are not ours alone. God gave them to us for the purpose of serving God and others. Through the
offering of our time, talent, and treasure, we seek to more perfectly reflect God’s kingdom and participate in the transformative
work of the Holy Spirit within ourselves, in the lives of others, and in our community.
Support Westerly Hills Academy’s
Saturday School
Beginning in February, WHA will offer Saturday School to their 3rd
through 8th graders. Principal Malacy Williams has asked First
Presbyterian to provide snack bags for students to take with them when they
leave. On Sunday, January 24, elementary students will put together these
snack bags during Sunday School. Please consider providing food for the
snack bags.
Bags will include individually packaged popcorn or cheez-its, 100% fruit
snacks or fruit cups, and 100% fruit juice boxes. A collection box is in the
hallway behind the sanctuary. Thank you for considering this very important ministry to children in our community.
COPS AND BARBERS:
An avenue toward community perspective.
Cops and Barbers is an avenue to gain perspective from two sections of the community: police
officers and citizens. Lately there has been great tension between the two groups and many
misunderstandings have occured. Cops and Barbers attempts to open dialogue give insights
into citizens rights and police protocol. You may have never had a negative encounter with
police or think you never will, but this conversation helps us understand why some do have
bad experiences. Also, as our city is growing more diverse and socially integrated, young people develop cross-cultural friendships, which results in a need for greater awareness of how to
react when stopped by the police.
Wednesday, Jan. 27. Dinner is 5:15-6:15 (no reservations required); the program will be 6:15-7:15 in Wood Fellowship Hall.
Room In The Inn:
Stay a night. Witness transformation.
Choose a Monday or Tuesday from December – March to provide breakfast food or bag lunches;
prepare and serve dinner; or spend the night with the 12 homeless guests staying at FPC. Over
250 members participated last year. Consider joining the ministry this winter. Often the stories
you hear are not much different from your own. Sign up on the church’s web site…Under News
and Announcements, select Opportunities to Serve in Our Community.
