LEADERS IN SPORT 2016 Information Booklet LEADERS IN SPORT A specialist program at Elisabeth Murdoch College Warrandyte Road, Langwarrin 3910 www.emc.vic.edu.au © 2015 LIS – Names to watch in future years LEADERS IN SPORT There have been many recent success stories of students at EMC within the Leaders in Sport program: Liam Jefferies National Champion – Mountain Biking At Elisabeth Murdoch College we encourage and promote a healthy attitude to life and learning. We care about providing leadership opportunities for all young people in the Langwarrin community. James Longley State/National Running and Cross Country Elisabeth Murdoch College offers a specialised Leaders in Sport program in Middle School, catering for students with a passion for sport and leadership, as well as a central focus on academic achievement. Luke Black AFL Stingrays and V-Line team member Leaders in Sport is a full-time, integrated, academic program which allows students to develop their athletic ability while concurrently receiving a high quality secondary education. The College has outstanding sporting facilities and a history of excellence in sport. We aspire to engage our students and teach skills for life. Designed and led by dedicated teachers, we work closely with select groups of like-minded students who plan and work together as a team. Personal development, including teamwork, organisation and reflection are core components of the Leaders in Sport (LIS) program. Semester Challenges The Year 7 and 8 LIS This subject is designed to prepare students for semester challenges. Three separate challenges will all lead to an overnight camp and mini triathlon held towards the end of Year 8. Thursday’s timetable is slightly different as students have a pastoral care session. Do you have a passion for sports and related pathways? Do you aim to achieve academic and sporting success? The selection criteria for students will include evidence of: • An understanding of the program’s aims and commitment to the Program; • Teamwork and demonstrated social behaviours; • Capacity to negotiate curriculum and develop a personalised program in consultation with the program staff and peers; Students in LIS are given opportunities to attend and participate in numerous excursions, incursions and workshops. These activities include surifing, rock climbing, ice skating and golf. • Willingness to work and volunteer in the community; and Students also visit world class sporting facilities such as the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Victorian Institute of Sport and the St Kilda Football Club training facilities. Students will submit an application with a portfolio including their sporting, academic and leadership achievements and references. If short listed, they will have an interview. 4 • Demonstrated skills in leadership, mentoring and coaching. 9 Costs LIS Responsibilities Students enrolled in the LIS will be expected to pay a special program levy. This levy includes the cost of incursions and excursions, including an overnight camp in Year 8 and a five-day camp to the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra during Year 9. Year 7 – $200 Year 8 – $350 Year 9 – $800 ACADEMIC Uniform Students enrolled in the LIS will be required to wear full EMC uniform. When students have sport related subjects they will be required to wear full EMC sports uniforms. LIS students have the option of purchasing a special uniform that can be worn to sport, on incursions and at special events. 8 I commit to achieve the best results in all subject areas. LEADERSHIP I understand the responsibilities of being a leader in a select entry program and I am committed to acting as a positive role model within all areas of the LIS and Elisabeth Murdoch College community. SPORTING I am 100% committed to the EMC Sports program and will coach others, compete and represent EMC with pride. 5 Assessment Pathways LIS students will be assessed using a variety of formal and informal methods – both practical and theoretical. These may include participation, theory, written work, folios, peer and self evaluation and teamwork. Leaders in Sport is a specialised program with a seamless pathway taking students from Year 7 to Year 12. Year 10 VCE/VCAL Career Pathway Performance and Electronic Folio Specialist PE Physical Education Sports Psychology Students in LIS will be asked to develop both performance and electronic folios throughout the year. The folios will include work samples, photos and a weekly online blog linked to the official LIS website. Fit and Healthy Health and Human Development Sports Medicine Outdoor Education VET Sport and Recreation Physiotherapy Adolescent Health VET Helath and Community Care Dietician/Nutrionist Mind Games Psychology Sports Administration Marketing Community Partnerships Dietician/Nutritionist Biology Coaching LIS students work with community partners and learn about values in sport, teamwork and mentoring. Students are involved in coaching inter-school sport and running PMP programs within primary schools. LIS students participate in local community events such as Clean Up Australia Day as well as the Red Shield Appeal. The College has a career and pathways partnership with Monash University and St Kilda Football Club and is developing partnerships with other organisations in the sports industry.
