News www.eugenerunningcompany.com Vol. 3, Issue 1 Salazar visits, speaks about career, Tracktown Alberto Salazar appeared at the Eugene Running Company and spoke about his incredible career as well as the history and future of the sport in Tracktown, USA. When Alberto was a student at the University of Oregon he won the New York City Marathon. It was the fastest marathon debut in history. The following year he returned to New York and shattered Derek Clayton’s world record which had stood for twelve years. In 1982, Alberto won his third consecutive New York City Marathon. Alberto was born in Havana, Cuba. His family immigrated to the United States and he later became a high school track star in Wayland, Massachusetts. He was recruited to run track and cross country at the University of Oregon under legendary coach Bill Dellinger. With his friend and teammate, Rudy Chapa, he led the Ducks to a National Cross Country Championship in 1977. Alberto was just a college sophomore when he defeated the King of the Roads, Bill Rodgers, in the 1978 Falmouth Road Race. After college, Alberto trained and lived in Eugene with his wife and family. He broke six American Records, The World Record and was inducted into the National Distance Running Hall of Fame. In 1994 he made a brief return to world class form and won the world’s most prestigious ultra marathon, Alberto Salazar spoke at the Eugene Running Company the 54-mile Comrades Marathon in South Africa. Alberto now coaches some of the most accomplished distance runners in the country including Olympians Dan Browne, Adam and Kara Goucher and University of Oregon sensation Galen Rupp. He continues to be one of the most inspirational and influential figures in the sport and is helping lead the renaissance in American Distance Running. –Bob Coll Salazar’s visit has a special meaning for Eugene Running Company Owner Michael Black Watching Alberto Salazar win New York City Marathon on television in a world’s record time of 2 hours 8 minutes and 13 seconds in 1981 was a spark that started an adventure for me that continues today. Had I not witnessed this incredible act of perseverance, concentration, determination, and grace perhaps my life would not have included running. The direction and choices I have made in my life, I believe would have been much different. Thank you, Alberto, for coming to do a speaking engagement at our store, even more, thank you for the gift that has shaped my life and was the seed ultimately that enabled the creation of the Eugene Running Company. Our mission is to inspire people and to help them improve the quality of their lives. You were the genesis for this mission. –Michael Black ru n n i n g wo r k s ★ ru nning works ★ running works ★ running works ★ running works ★ running works ★ running works ★ ru n n i n g wo r k s © 2006 Eugene Running Company LLC All Rights Reserved Eugene Challenge Cross Country for Kids inspires youth, parents, Oregon Ducks. Kids ages 10 through 18 invited to run on an accurate 2000 meters cross-country course around the filbert orchard on Pre's Trail proved a great symbiotic “Tracktown” event for the kids, parents, and University of Oregon Cross-Country teams alike. “Pre’s Trail,” the same venue that would hold the inaugural Bill Dellinger Invitational later that afternoon was selected for inspiring the kids, parents, and University of Oregon athletes. The day was glorious and was fun for all who were involved. We had 38 girls and 42 boys in total. Our first-place girl, by the name of Becca Eddy and who happens to be 13, won by a large margin in 7:41. First-place boy, by the name of Russell Drummond, age 16, ran 6:30, also winning by a considerable margin. Becca and Russell both won a first-place plaque. A cowbell was handed out to the winner of each age group, which later would be used to encourage the University of Oregon runners when they ran their races. Cold Stone Creamery gave away lots of tasty ice cream to the kids who really earned it. Rick Russell, our photographer took great pictures. Music from our DJ made for a joyful event. Much appreciation goes out and all the cheering spectators that lined our course. Special thanks to our awesome volunteers that included Jerry Stromme, Stephanie Rimmel, Tom Chorney, Melody Fairchild, Sarah Kerr-Daley, Paul Daley, Eamonn Kerr-Daley, Margo and Bobby Jennings, Janet Heinonen, Erin Regali, David Wilkins, Erin Lynch as the announcer and of course a very special thanks to the honorable Coach Bill Dellinger and Pete Squires as the starters. Without these volunteers, we certainly could not have pulled it off. –Laura LaMena-Coll and Michael Black 2 ru n n i n g wo r k s ★ ru nning works ★ running works ★ running works ★ running works ★ running works ★ running works ★ ru n n i n g wo r k s Girls Results 1. Having a group to share this entire experience helps immensely. The Marathon Team, co-sponsored by the Eugene Running Company and SportHill and coached by Joe Henderson, provides this support. Our latest Team began training in June, pointing for the Portland Marathon (or an alternate race for a few of the runners) four months later. We again enjoyed a successful "graduation day." By the numbers, these were the results: Boston Marathon qualifiers: 5; personal records set: 11 (of 21 with previous experience); debuted in this race: 19; Team members who completed training, plus honorary teammates who sometimes trained with us: 40; number of finishes: 40; starters and finishers for all of our Teams: 130 of 130. Joe Henderson's next Team, for the new Eugene Marathon in April 2007 and beginning its Sunday morning training in late December, is full. But the Eugene Running Company hopes to form another group, with a different coach. –Joe Henderson Marathon Team #5 – Summer/Fall 2006 (All ran Portland Marathon unless otherwise noted; * set personal record; + qualified for Boston) Dianne Ahmann – 5:00 Monique Balbuena – 4:15* Lanae Bang – 5:00 Jen Barwood – 4:27* Glenn Buchanan – 4:21 Renee Buchanan – 4:21 Esther Caballero-Manrique – 4:25 Jean Cordova – 4:51 Susan Clark-Greig – 5:36 Emily Fife – 4:58* Chris Hatch – 4:50 JoAnna Hatch – 4:49 Wendy Hunter – 4:14 Sandy Itzkowitz – 3:59*+ (also ran McKenzie 50K) Andy MacDonald – 6:28 Sarah McCarthy – 3:21*+ Paula Montague – 5:36 (also 6:58 in Timberline Marathon) Sergio Nava – 4:35 Lindsay Nelson – 3:47* Paul Olmsted – 3:08+ Michelle Orr – 5:41 (in Timberline Marathon) Kat Ortland – 5:27 Tom Pellinger – 3:33 Sheri Philpott – 4:16* Bob Pool – 3:54 Stefanie Rimel – 3:24+ Rachel Drummond Sardell – 5:27* Hannah Shanks – 5:05 Jacob Shaw – 4:40 (also ran another marathon & 50K) Cindy Smith – 5:05 Courtney Smith – 3:47* (in San Francisco Marathon) Karla Snyder – 4:17 Justin Speyer – 4:47 Andrea Stanton – 4:13* Jerry Stromme – 4:02* Lon Tiniakos – 4:20 Doug Tucker – 3:59 (in Bizz Johnson Marathon) Maryn Vail – 3:42+ Patricia Wigney – 4:42 Rachel Young -- 3:46 Inaugural Ladies Night a big success Kayla Mellott and the women of the Eugene Running Company hosted a very popular evening of wine tasting, desserts and special shopping! Brad Hudson discusses Boulder Training Group Accelerade sports beverage company sponsored a popular appearance at the store by the Boulder Performance Group of elite athletes. Coach Brad Hudson discussed training theory he applies to his runners competing at the world class level. The Boulder Training Group conducts their high-altitude training in Boulder, Colorado, and their sea-level training camps in Eugene, Oregon. Coach Hudson’s athlete’s are in the final stages of preparation for marathon debuts in the Chicago and New York City Marathons. Brad Hudson was a star runner at South Eugene High School where he set a national scholastic record for 5,000m (i) that still stands today. While just a high school senior, Brad ran a 2:17 marathon. He went on to become a Pac-10 Cross Country Champion for the Oregon Ducks and earned All-American honors both on the track and cross country. Brad enjoyed a successful professional running career representing the United States in two World Championships and achieving a 2:13 marathon personal record. Brad’s coaching success has earned him international acclaim. His training theories have been made popular within the last year by major articles about Brad in Runner’s World Magazine, Running Times and Peak Performance Running. During Brad Hudson’s running career his training volume and intensity were legendary. Even while just a high school student in South Eugene he ran 140 to 150 miles per week with staggering intensity. Nike sponsored athlete Dathan Ritzenhein is mak- ing his marathon debut in the New York City Marathon. He’s running to win. Early this year he ran the ninth fastest 10,000m in American history. He is the 2005 10K National Champion and represented the U.S. in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Dathan won the 2003 NCAA Cross Country National Championship and was a two-time national high school champion. The day before Dathan appeared at the store he ran an 18 mile training run at 5:18 pace. This was Dathan’s second public appearance at the Eugene Running Company. Reebok athlete Ed Torres was the first American at this years prestigious Falmouth Road Race where he finished tenth place. The week before Ed arrived at the Eugene Running Company, he made a successful debut at the half marathon distance running 63:33 at the Philadelphia Distance Classic. Ed Torres is making his marathon debut at the Chicago Marathon. Former Duck Jason Hartmann now runs professionally for Nike. Earlier this year he was a member of the United States National Team for the World Cross Country Championships. Jason won the silver medal in the 2006 U.S. Half Marathon National Championship and placed 20th in the IAAF World Road Racing Championships. He was an All American Track and Cross Country runner at the University of Oregon. Jason has selected Chicago as his first marathon and has been running up to 130 miles per week in preparation.
