CELEBRATING 50 YEARS WITH GROWTH AND IMPACT For Meals On Wheels Atlanta, 2015 was a year of many milestones. We celebrated our 50th anniversary, delivered our 3.4 millionth meal, and completed our $2 million Capital Campaign. We also bid farewell to Jeff Smythe, who concluded his long tenure of leadership here, and we welcomed Charlene Crusoe-Ingram, former Chair of the Board of Trustees, as the new leader of Meals On Wheels Atlanta. With fresh momentum from the celebration of our 50th anniversary, we are eager to look ahead and to take on the new challenges facing the senior community in the Atlanta area. The greatest challenge we face is the skyrocketing rate of food insecurity among seniors. In the past few years, the waitlist for our Meal Services program has swelled dramatically with impoverished and disabled seniors struggling against hunger and other serious hardships. We now have nearly 400 seniors on our waitlist for meal delivery. Our Meal Services program is so overwhelmed that these seniors must wait over a year to start receiving meals—a wait no senior should have to endure. This great and growing need is what inspired us to make our new Five-Year Strategic Plan an ambitious one. Between now and 2020, we aim to make Meal Services our highest priority and to increase our impact by 250% to 500,000 meals per year. To accomplish this, we need to grow our annual funding by 116% to $8m. Our other major goal for 2020 is to develop Seniors360, a triage approach to connecting seniors with internal and external services so that we may more comprehensively address their needs. While our Strategic Plan is ambitious, we are already making exciting progress toward our goals. We have invested funds from our recent Capital Campaign to expand our capacity to meet the needs of seniors throughout the Atlanta area. Our renovated kitchen can now produce up to 2,000 meals per day. And in order to raise our funding levels to support that meal production volume and other areas of expansion, we have invested in promising new fundraising strategies. In 2015, we also inaugurated our Young Professional Board, which is cultivating support for MOWA among young millennials. As we commemorate the milestones and successes of 2015, we recognize that it takes the collaborative efforts of our whole community—of each of you, our donors, volunteers, board, and staff—to respond to the needs of Atlanta area seniors. We are so grateful for all you have done to support our mission in MOWA’s first 50 years, and we ask for your continued support as we undertake the challenges of the years ahead. CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF SERVING ATLANTA SENIORS 1965 – 2015 What a milestone year! Indeed, we celebrated 50 years of service with remarkable growth and impact. We kicked off the anniversary with Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed delivering our 3.4 millionth meal to one of our wonderful clients. In August of 2015, we announced our first ever $1 million donation at our 50th anniversary celebration event. We also wrapped up a successful $2 million capital campaign and developed a new five-year strategic plan. All year long, we celebrated our anniversary, our clients and our impactful work in the community. VOLUNTEERS Volunteers are the Lifeline to Seniors at Meals On Wheels Atlanta create strong relationships with our seniors and become a lifeline of support. The Volunteer Services department also launched an internship program for college students to gain hands-on nonprofit experience and to provide valuable support of our operations. As a result of these investments, we have seen our individual and group volunteer base substantially increase, allowing us to grow support for Atlanta’s expanding population of seniors. As Meals On Wheels Atlanta grows, we rely on our volunteers more than ever. In 2015, we strategically invested in our Volunteer Services department to increase our base of volunteers. Through a grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta, we were able to expand the department and hire a new Director of Volunteer Services. With renewed capacity and focus, we are fostering meaningful volunteer experiences for individuals and families as well as corporate, civic and faith-based groups from all over Atlanta. Our dedicated volunteers One of our devoted volunteers, MS. BARBARA HAIG, has delivered meals to our seniors every Saturday for the past 7 years. At 89 years old, she is a lifelong resident of Atlanta and one of our most dependable volunteers. A big THANK YOU goes out to her and all of our hardworking volunteers who made this past year a success!
