They are found all over the world and are present in many different cultures. People build cairns to bring peace and balance into their lives and also to mark a path that may have become obstructed from view. At The Healing Center, a cairn rests in one of our group rooms and acts as a reminder of our mission. We believe healing is possible for everyone, and we feel honored to help navigate the The Healing Center is an Aurora Health Care Well Community Program. journey with our clients. 2 Our Services 1. Individual Counseling A Letter 2. Advocacy including Bilingual 3. Group Therapy from our Executive Director • Adults Molested as Children (AMAC) Dear Good Friend of The Healing Center, • Survivors Towards Recovery (STR) As I sit to write this letter, I am struck by how important I find this task. In this one letter I need to reflect on an entire year of service at The Healing Center. For me, this report is not just about summarizing that we served 665 survivors of sexual violence, but also to discuss the impact our services had on our clients’ lives and within our community. Often we try to find symbolism to demonstrate the power of healing from sexual trauma. This year, we have chosen the cairn. I’m sure you all have seen these stacks of rocks while walking. Placed at regular recesses, a series of cairns can be used to indicate the direction to take across a stony or desolate path and even across glaciers. They also symbolize hope and balance. Throughout the report, you will see images of cairns and their magical ability to fit together in amazing ways. The same harmony that is found in cairns is seen every day at The Healing Center. It is evident in the delicate and purposeful arrangement of healing services, and the perseverance and strength of survivors. The services that are provided to survivors vary in size from small stone markers to large granite mountains, and in complexity from loose, narrowed rock piles to delicately balanced sculptures and elaborate feats of engineering. This is the healing path of the survivors at The Healing Center. To take a closer look at our impact….turn the page. • Creative Healing (art therapy-based group) • Sexual Wholeness (healthy intimate relationship group) • Men’s Group • Adult Rape/SA Support Group (ASA) • Spanish-Speaking Women’s Group 4. Topic nights In hope, peace and partnership, Maryann Clesceri, MSW, LCSW Executive Director The Healing Center, an Aurora Health Care Well Community Program 3 4 Maria’s Journey Healing Journey at The Healing Center I am a survivor of sexual abuse. Who is now blooming with life. I am a daughter, sister, mother and wife. I no longer use negative coping skills use. I had started the process of healing, I made progress with Kerry. A heavy load of evilness I carried, that overwhelmed my heart with mixed feelings. I was drowning in shame and guilt, when a good friend guided me to The Healing Center. A place I feared to enter, since I felt I was covered in filth. I was triggered just walking into the Center’s doors. But, I felt the safety of a loving home. There I was not alone. There I built my safe place from ceiling to floor. I came to The Healing Center fearful, but with hope. I had a history of mental health hospitalization twice a year. 5 I was ready to end the guilt, shame and fear. And here they gave me skills to better cope. Miraculous were the classes on Creative Healing. Through art my deepest feelings I shared. To face my deepest fears I dared. Now, positively with flashbacks I’m dealing. I am thankful for this place. A place where my guilt and shame evaporated into its walls. Today to share my healing I am called. I no longer in this world feel misplaced. My self worth has increased. I no longer feel odd. Thanks be to my gracious God, For from self harm with Kerry, Jorge and The Healing Center, I am not deceased. Muneebah Abdullah Sexual Assault Counselor Including my time as an intern and an extern, I have been working at The Healing Center for nearly three years. I provide individual counseling, group therapy and basic advocacy. One of the many benefits of working at The Healing Center has been the collaborative team approach. As a professional counselor-in-training, I have always felt supported by the other team members. Another benefit of working at The Healing Center has been our approach towards working with survivors of all types of sexual-related trauma. We believe that sexual trauma can adversely influence many aspects of a survivor’s life. Consequently, healing takes time. With our “no rush” model, The Healing Center offers our clients that time. As a non-profit that does not rely on insurance for funding, we are not troubled with the red tape often associated with insurance companies. Clients are able to move through our services at their own pace. As a counselor, I feel this approach is essential to our clients’ ability to get to the core of their concerns and to acquire the necessary tools for healing fully and living their most authentic life. I admire survivors for their courage to walk through The Healing Center’s door, to seek assistance, and to share their life. I promise to continue to strive to do my best to understand our clients in their own terms, and to provide compassion and empathy for them in all that we do. By: Maria (Lulu) Negron 6 Hope Shining Gala The Healing Center’s fourth annual Hope Shining Gala raised $41,000 and welcomed 305 attendees to celebrate the courageous spirits of survivors of sexual violence. The highlight of the night came when two very strong survivors shared their stories about overcoming past abuse and learning to heal. The Healing Center presented Hope Shining awards to Linda Davis and Sally Turner, who have both made a huge impact on survivors and work to bring resources to Milwaukee that help keep the community safe. The event was emceed by Kim Murphy, a reporter for Fox 6 News, and also included a photo exhibit by Shutter the Silence, a project that aims to end victim blaming. The Healing Center is grateful for all of the sponsors who made this event possible. Their contributions help fund counseling and advocacy for those in need and allow additional survivors access to services. 7 Hope Shining Gala Sponsors Silver Sponsors - $2,500 The Brico Fund Gail Hanson Bronze Sponsors – $1,000 Janine Arseneau Aurora Health Care Maryann and Joe Clesceri Adam and Carole Glass Mira and Keith Ketzler Table Sponsors – $550 Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Tom Cooper CORE/El Centro Bob and Linda Davis Chris Doerfler Debbie Donovan Fix Development Dr. Nancy Havas David Hoffman Jane Lazynski Elaine Maly Office of Violence Prevention – Milwaukee Health Department Mindy and Matthew Price Dr. Kristen Reynolds and Dr. Tiffany Mullen Herica Silva Sally and Tim Turner Purple Door Ice Cream donated six gallons of their “Hope Shining” flavor for guests of the gala. 8 Claudia’s Story To “heal” is defined as to cure; save; make whole, sound and well. The Healing Center has assisted me in my personal metamorphosis to heal myself. I came in with feelings of loneliness, shame and fear which resulted from my sexual trauma as a child. I felt as if no one understood me; I didn’t understand what was happening to me. The world felt like a scary place. When I began to have nightmares I knew I had to take some sort of action. A dear friend told me about The Healing Center, and I decided to trust myself, and so I called. Taking that action led to me discovering my true self. The one-on-one counseling sessions opened my heart space again. I learned to process my thoughts and how to feel each of my emotions. It took tools such as handouts, support from other survivors and ultimately me doing the work. By doing the work, I began taking quiet time to process my entire ordeal. I had to surrender and let it all go. Men’s Group This closed, eight-week group is designed for men who have experienced sexual abuse. It is the first of its kind in Wisconsin, and allows participants to come together and connect with others who have experienced trauma. Participants learn about healthy coping skills, reducing isolation and how to deal with feelings of anger, grief and shame. The group also allows men to disclose abuse that has occurred and receive support in a safe environment. Through positive self talk and posting positive affirmations on my bedroom mirror and on my desk, I crawled through the darkness. Through the night terrors and paranoia, and the drinks here and there to mask the confusion and pain, I told myself I must complete this challenge. It has been the hardest thing for me to do thus far. I spent a lot of time in the dark being my own worst enemy, until finally I saw the light. As time passed and I got more in tune with myself, I learned to change my thoughts and my unhealthy copings. I began to LOVE myself 100%. I am still learning and discovering. I have come a long way and there is no turning back! I now eat natural foods, which I credit to changing me into the thriving young woman I now view myself as today. The counselors at The Healing Center are guides, and I thank each and every one of them for helping to heal lives one day at a time. ¿A quién recurrir?, ¿A quién pedir ayuda? No sabía. Los años pasaban y yo ahí… con un profundo dolor. At The Healing Center, we are appreciative of the dedication of our interns and externs. These master’s-level counseling and social work students provide over $140,000 worth of free counseling and group therapy while earning university credit and hours towards LPC licensure. Tricia, an extern social worker, joined The Healing Center in 2011. p i h s n r e t x E s ’ a i c i Tr Experience Para mí el contar con la asistencia y ayuda de TheHealing Center significa mucho en mi vida, porque ahí he encontrado mucha paz y esperanza, ayuda incondicional y apoyo profesional. TheHealing Center es mi refugio y mi paz al mismo tiempo. Me gusta mucho estar aquí y tener un espacio tan personal. El compartir con otros clientes y el espacio me dan compañía y no me siento aislada. ¡Vuelvo a renacer! Contar con un salón de arte renueva mis energías, me inspira a su vez a exteriorizar mis vivencias mediante el arte que proyecto, me permito a mi misma renovar mi espíritu, reconocer que soy merecedora de respeto, amor, alegría y bondad. Sinceramente, Gaviota Well, to be honest, I did not know how to start my testimony as a survivor of sexual abuse. I knew that it just had to seem eloquent and nice, when I really was living in pain. When so much pain emerges from my soul, it becomes physical. I am a survivor of sexual abuse. As a child I learned to keep quiet about what I wanted to scream with desperate cries. Thirty-three years of silence. Who do I turn to? Who do I ask for help? I did not know. The years passed and I was there ... with a deep pain. For me to have the assistance and support of The Healing Center means a lot to me, because the clinic’s unconditional, professional support has helped me find peace and hope. The Healing Center is my refuge and my peace. I really enjoy being here and being afforded a very personal space. Being able to share with other survivors and this space has helped ease my feelings of isolation. I feel reborn! Spending time in the art room renews my energy. Art projects have helped me feel inspired to externalize my experiences, and have renewed my spirit. Art has helped me recognize that I am worthy of respect, love, joy and kindness. Sincerely, Gaviota 11 I have been an extern counselor at The Healing Center for over one year, and I really enjoy being part of this agency. The office feels more like a home, with a kitchen open to all, music playing, books and magazines, and blankets to warm up with. The staff seems so relaxed here; it just adds to the comfort felt in this space. I have my master’s degree and advanced practice social work license, and I do individual therapy and facilitate groups, for women and for men. My past work experiences have paved a path for me to be comfortable talking and working with survivors of sexual assault. I wanted to be a part of the work that is done here because it is so very important and the results are powerful. The Healing Center is unique because there is never a fee to any client for any service. For this reason, barriers due to insurance or income are removed and survivors of sexual assault can get the help they desire. I feel very proud and humble doing this work; it means a lot for a client to be comfortable and trust enough to open themselves up and begin to heal, and I am always honored to be a part of that. 12 Volunteering at The Healing Center Mauro’s Story Kathy A few years ago I volunteered to help with The Healing Center fundraiser, knowing very little about the organization. After seeing how dedicated the staff is and what they have done for so many survivors, I was truly amazed. To hear the survivor stories and see how courageous these individuals are, and able to go on living normal and productive lives was so impressive. It truly had an impact on me. Since then, I am more than honored to volunteer for such a wonderful and successful organization. Carol I’ve been a Healing Center volunteer for four years. Why do I do it? It is the right thing to do. The staff are so dedicated and the survivors unbelievably brave, it is a pleasure and honor to volunteer there. Everyone should give it a try. They will receive much more than they give. 13 The Healing Center is a fabulous epicenter of advocacy, education, growth and support. It not only helps to give survivors a voice, but provides them the tools to begin to thrive. Prior to being introduced to The Healing Center, I lived in a world of shame, guilt, pain, no self worth and a total inability to feel an honest connection to others, or even with my true self. I carried around the burden of my abuse and survived mostly through negative coping skills. The Healing Center is teaching me that there is a better way, and I deserve to embrace all that I want within my own life. Immediately, the healing of mind, body and soul were presented not only as possibilities, but as a way of life that I could attain. The amazing dynamic of just being told “it was not your fault” and “you can come out on top of all this” is great in and of itself, but the consistent support and reflection of the work that I put into my recovery is what is most beneficial. In the short time that I have been coming to The Healing Center, I see my life on a totally new, amazing and fulfilling path. I embrace life and continue to put forth the effort into my recovery toward the life I’d like to lead. More and more, through the help of The Healing Center, I find myself growing into my authentic self. 14 Who We Serve Revenue/Expense by Program As an Aurora Health Care Well Community Program, The Healing Center provides services for uninsured and underinsured men and women. We provided counseling to 232 clients, which came to $190,700 of free care for those in need. The Healing Center also served 173 survivors through bilingual advocacy and provided $91,350 of free group therapy to 192 men and women. 15 16 2012 accomplishments Our new, green building In March, The Healing Center moved to 130 West Bruce Street in Milwaukee. The “green” building includes a rooftop farm, an energy – creating elevator and 27 geothermal wells underground that use the earth’s mass for cooling and heating the four floors above. In addition, more than 50 percent of the building is made up of recycled materials. Many of which came from Aurora Health Care. This new building was made possible by funding from: Aurora Health Care Davis Family Foundation Jane Bradley Petit Foundation Denim Day ors of sexua la r viv ss su a rt pp o I su t. ul In 2012, The Healing Center celebrated Denim Day in honor of a woman who was forcibly raped by her driving instructor. The woman pressed charges, but since she was wearing tight jeans, she had to help the perpetrator remove them. Because of this, the chief judge dismissed the case and ruled that it was consensual sex. This campaign brought awareness to the prevalence of sexual violence and raised funds for programs that benefit survivors. Aurora Health Care championed the issue by allowing caregivers to wear jeans and Denim Day stickers to demonstrate support, collected donations and featured survivor stories on the Aurora intranet site. The Healing Center team Back: Katie Llewellyn, Erika Riobò Gómez, Esmeralda Leon, Tricia Damm, Carolyn Wesolowski, Melinda Hughes, Stacy Andraski Middle: Tricia Linde, Muneebah Abdullah, Alicia Mell, Cassandra De La Rosa, Jennifer Ward, Rae Anne Frey Front: Maryann Clesceri, Stephanie Shabangu Additional Survivors Towards Recovery groups These groups allowed more survivors to access services and led to an 11% increase in the outcome measure “using positive coping mechanisms.” (94% of survivors indicated they were using positive coping techniques.) 17 18 Our Donors Herica Why I give to The Healing Center We are so thankful for all those who donate to The Healing Center. Because of your generous contributions, hundreds of survivors in need receive free counseling and advocacy. Aurora Health Care continues to provide support through human resources, philanthropy, fringe benefits, Creative Services, information systems, and more. We are deeply grateful for this connection, which allows all fundraised money to directly benefit survivors of sexual violence. $10,000+ The first time I heard about The Healing Center was when it was recommended to me by my psychologist back in early 2009. It took me quite a few months to build up the courage to call and schedule my initial intake. I began my journey to healing when I participated in all the groups and topic nights that were available to me from October 2009 to March 2011. If it hadn’t been for this wonderful non-profit organization, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I was able to find myself and learn that I was not alone in my journey. Each facilitator helped me at a deep level, and I met admirable women that are still a big part of my life today. I was given this great opportunity at no cost to me, for which I was so grateful, the only way I thought to give my gratitude was by doing so financially. I want to be a part of being able to give other survivors the same opportunity I had, and that is why I get such pleasure in donating to The Healing Center. Building Service, Inc.
