A Focus on Your Elbow
Tennis elbow is a condition in which the outer part of
the elbow becomes sore and tender. It is commonly caused by
non-inflammatory, chronic degenerative changes in the tendon
that attaches the forearm muscle to the elbow. It is most
prevalent in middle age and in men than women.
Another factor of tennis elbow injury is experience
and ability. The proportion of players who reported a history
of tennis elbow had an increased number of playing years.
As for ability, poor technique increases the chance for injury
much like any sport.
Therefore an individual must learn proper technique
for all aspects of their sport. As part of a tennis elbow
rehabilitation program, exercise and physical therapy may
promote tendon healing, restore normal range of motion,
and build muscle strength and endurance.
Tennis elbow recovery time varies with each person
and may take several weeks to several months. Recovery
may be faster and more successful when you follow a
rehabilitation program that includes exercise and physical
therapy.
Symptoms of tennis elbow include:
- Pain slowly increasing around the outside of the elbow.
Less often, pain may develop suddenly.
- Pain is worse when shaking hands or squeezing objects.
- Pain is made worse by stabilizing or moving the wrist with force.
Examples include lifting, using tools, opening jars, or even
handling simple utensils such as a toothbrush or knife and fork.
The symptoms of tennis elbow develop gradually, with
mild pain that slowing worsens over weeks and months, which
can eventually lead to severe pain associated with weak grip
strength. The symptoms are usually worsened with forearm
activity, such as holding a racquet, turning a wrench, or shaking
hands.
Ultrasound applied over the tender area is commonly
recommended. The theory is that this deep heat increases blood
flow and tissue flexibility, and may decrease pain and muscle
spasms. Massage over an inflamed area, which may reduce the
formation of scar tissue and help new blood vessels grow in the
damaged tissue. Massage is done by making small, firm circles
over the injured area. It should not be painful and may be helpful
before and after exercises.
