Congratulations to the Class of 2015
Volume 4 Issue 6 June/July 2015 Congratulations to the Class of 2015 Photo courtesy of PhilMar Photo Berks Catholic High School, Inc. | 955 East Wyomissing Boulevard | Reading, PA 19611-1799 FromthePrincipal We will send the Saints of 2015 off into the world to accomplish great things. Let me share with you some of these great things: They will matriculate at some of the most competitive schools in the country including: Swarthmore College, Bryn Mawr College, William & Mary, Carnegie Mellon, Johns Hopkins, Boston College, Wake Forest, Bucknell, Lafayette, Lehigh, NYU, University of Rochester, Penn State University, Virginia Tech, Villanova, as well as our great local colleges including our graduation host Alvernia University, just to name a few. They have earned 10.5 million dollars in merit scholarships and grants, including top institutional academic awards, athletic scholarships, and full-tuition scholarships 17 members of this class will be varsity athletes at the Division 1, 2, 3, Junior College and Post-Graduate Levels in the following sports: Baseball, Basketball, Football, Women’s Lacrosse, Softball, Swimming, and Women’s Volleyball They will continue their education in 77 different colleges in Pennsylvania and 19 other states such as: Alabama, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Virginia, and Washington D.C., and the country of Germany. Additionally, the class of 2015 received a total of 502 offers of admission to 154 different colleges in 20 states. 97% of our 2015 Saints will continue their education at 2 or 4 Year Colleges & Universities. Students are also discerning the Priesthood and religious life, they will also enter the workforce and pursue their passions. They have completed over 10,000 hours of service, in soup kitchens, food banks, tutoring and mentoring Olivet Boys and Girls Club, Habitat for Humanity Outreach, John Paul II Fun Day, and dozens of other causes. So yes The Class of 2015 has much to be proud of! They are a special class, the first class to spend all four years at Berks Catholic. And in being the first I believe there is a significant scriptural analogy that can be made. Matthew 19:30 says the first shall be last. If you think about how this might apply to all of us, this would be a tremendous way to approach the world. If we always put others before ourselves and completely approach the world from an unselfish point of view we will be truly blessed. Each year my wish for our Saints is that in their time at Berks Catholic they have grown spiritually in their faith, formed relationships for a lifetime, expanded their minds and had fun doing it. I would like to wish you and your family a safe and blessed summer. God Bless you and your family and Go Saints. Yours in Christ, Tony Balistrere Principal BERKS CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER HOURS Monday, June 15, 2015 to Friday, August 14, 2015 8:00 AM—2:00 PM In observance of Independence Day Berks Catholic will close at 12pm on Thursday, July 2nd Closed on Friday July 3, 2015. Please note that we will close at noon on Fridays from June 26th thru August 7th NORMAL HOURS Monday, August 17th 7:30AM to 4:00PM During the summer, members of the administration and staff will be out of the building at various times. Please call the appropriate extension to schedule an appointment. FromtheAssistantPrincipalof Studies FromtheDirectorof College&CareerCounseling Thought for the month: "Whether you think you can, or think you can't...you're right!" Henry Ford WORDS OF WISDOM Graduation Kudos: Congratulations to BC’s Valedictorian, Ellen Moser and to BC’s salutatorian, Kyle Vu, for their commitment to education. Each has worked tirelessly to be successful. There is nothing like hard work! Congratulations to the entire class of 2015, they have all made important decisions about their futures. We know that whatever path they have chosen, they will rise to the top. We are proud of our Saints! Dual Credit: Seniors: You should have received a letter in the mail with instructions on how to have your dual credits transferred from Alvernia to the college that you will attend next year. If you did not receive the letter, please stop at the Studies Office. Remember that credits can’t be transferred until your final grade is sent to Alvernia. This will occur the week after graduation. Sophomores and Juniors: If you would like to sign up for Dual Credit for next year, registration is running until the end of June. A letter was mailed home with the registration form. Payment is required at the time of registration. Alvernia will not allow students to register in the fall, so it is imperative that students register before June ends. Report Card Information Final Report Cards: Report cards were mailed by June 12th. Failures: Any student who failed a class for the year was notified before they left on June 4th. Options for credit recovery were given to the students at that time. Additionally, a letter was put in the mail to confirm that the parents were aware of the failure. Students who fail classes for the 2014-2015 school year must make up that work before returning to school in August. AP Information: Any student who took Advanced Placement exams will be able to access their scores online about the second week of July. Scores will not be mailed. Summer Reading/Summer Projects All summer reading and summer projects have been placed on the school website. Over the past year, you have heard plenty about the college process from Mr. D & company; while the information is important, and the messages the same- it seems a good idea to share the insights of others: Words of Wisdom………... From the Class of 2015 Don’t slack till you get your diploma! There’s a place for you, just be patient It’s Okay to start early. Mr. Ditsky and Dr. Stahler are very helpful- TALK TO THEM! Work on your essay over the summer! Have an open mind. Use the resources available to you. Don’t wait till January to begin. Your Freshman Year GPA is IMPORTANT! From College Admission Officers We want to know, that the student knows why they are applying to our school …it’s got to be more than just name and prestige In our process, though, academic strength is necessary but not sufficient. We place a lot of emphasis on voice, and I've actually blogged about how that balances with our academic evaluations. You can read more here: http://admissions.tufts.edu/blogs/ inside-admissions/post/close-but-not-there-yet-your -academic-base/ We are looking for students that are high achievers both in and outside of the classroom; students that are in a rigorous curriculum that challenges them and prepares them for success in college; and students that are dedicated to extracurricular activities (ranging from sports, to music, to volunteering, to having a part-time job). Since we utilize a holistic review process, we do everything we can to get to know the student through their application. From BC Parents & Family Trust that whatever happens, it will be ok. Your kid is strong, brave, resilient, prepared, faithful, and most of all, ready for the next chapter. No matter where they go, they will thrive and succeed. That's the beauty of the BC education. Visiting campuses after Sophomore Year was a BIG help From College Coaches & Athletic Administrators Coaches Coach….Admissions Admits. Don’t confuse the two. You will know a coach is interested when we call/ text on a consistent basis. One letter/email does not indicate interest. It is nice to be able to recruit a student that was going to get a little academic money. We look for talent, hard workers, character kids and good, solid students. Develop a very strong work ethic athletically and excellent time management skills away from athletics…. Make sure to meet the team, coaching staff, attend a class, etc. I dropped a good player (recruit) because her dad was a jerk. Ask yourself (and be honest): Is this school an overall good fit? Would I be happy here if I were no longer playing- or if the coach left? SAT and ACT TEST DATES FALL 2015 SAT October 3 / November 7 / December 5 Register: collegeboard.org/SAT ACT September 12 / October 2 / December 12 Register: act.org/Student WHAT I LEARNED TODAY a periodic feature meant to inform, entertain, and get you thinking: SAT CHANGES: In March 2016 the College Board will launch the new format of the SAT Reasoning Test (aka SAT I). This will primarily affect the current Class of 2017 and beyond. The current SAT format will remain in effect until January 2016. What we are currently hearing from Admissions Officers is that they will utilize old and new SAT formats as well as ACTs in their application review. I.E.- send all test results! We join the growing number of our colleagues on both sides of the admission desk in strongly encouraging students to take the ACT exam as well as the SAT. This is an evolving situation for all involved in the college process and we will keep you apprised of new developments. Click here for an overview of the coming changes: SAT Redesign collegeboard.org SUMMER 2015 will find BC Saints: ♦ABROAD JUSTIN SIBERSKI C’ 17: Justin will be spending 3 weeks in Ireland, Scotland, England, and Wales as an ambassador with People To People. Justin also spent Summer 2014 in Australia with PTP! MISS GULLING: Never one to sit still- Mademoiselle Gulling continues on her quest to visit every continent on Earth- she will spend July and some of August traversing Australia on walkabout. ♦In GOVERNORS SCHOOL Jonathan Gramley C’ 16 will spend 6 weeks in the Pennsylvania Governors School for the Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Selection for Governor’s School is extremely selective, and Jonathan was one of only a small handful of students selected from hundreds of applicants from across Pennsylvania. ♦SERVING THE COMMUNITY Thanks to the tireless efforts of Mr. Olivard and Mr. Gray-BCs relationship with Olivet’s Boys and Girls Club continues. Dozens of BC Saints are working at the Olivet’s Summer Camp! Please let me know about your Summer Experiences! STAY SHARP- Much like training your body for athletic competition, your voice for singing, etc… the effects of training your mind is cumulative. In other words, the more you practice skills on a daily basis, the better you become. Take time to enjoy the summer- but also take a bit of time each day to hone your academic and intellectual skills . COLLEGE PLANNING MEETINGS College Planning Meetings are well under-way. Please note that your transcripts are being received by colleges and the NCAA in addition to the thousands, tens of thousands, and even hundreds of thousands other high school graduates sending transcripts to those same colleges and the NCAA. We get the consistent messages from college admissions offices and the NCAA that processing all of this information typically begins in late June / early July, and can take up to several weeks to complete. With this in mind, please be patient with the process, and if you receive reminders from colleges or the NCAA, note that these are typically automated and are often sent even though information is en route to or even received by these institutions. If you get a message from your college, or your online portal still shows that your final transcripts need to be sent, please call the admissions office directly to inquire if they have gotten your transcript before contacting the BC College Counseling Office. If during this phone conversation, you discover that for some reason, the college does not have your transcript, please let us know. FromtheOfficeof CampusMinistry&Counseling Campus Ministry Service Program The students at Berks Catholic completed another great year of community service. Collectively as a school, they completed over 10,00 hours of service. Many students volunteered at the Olivet Boys and Girls Club, tutored children at St. Peter’s Parish School, babysat at Mary’s Shelter, helped with various events at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, worked at the Kennedy House Kitchen, and even woke up early to serve breakfast at 6:00am at the Opportunity House. Many students also served at their home parishes helping with CYO or lecturing and serving at Sunday Mass. During the school year many students stop by the Campus Ministry office to talk about their service experiences, expressing their satisfaction in helping those in need. Berks Catholic is also happy to announce that thirty-three seniors earn gold service cords for completing more than 200 hours of service throughout their four years at Berks Catholic. Congratulations go to the following seniors who achieved this honor: Katelyn Bennett Cory Lobaugh John Boyer William Mancuso Samantha Crupi Hannah Miravich Lia Cubilete Abigail Morelli Victoria Daly Andrea Murga Emily Duong Thinh Nguyen Katherine Finneran Robert Noga Gabrielle Geltz Makenzie Perles Lilia Greth Olivia Pienta Jacob Hafer Ross Pilliod Samantha Hagelbarger Faith Powell Lindsey Hecker JaiHui Shi (Amber) Carly Jablonski Allegra Taormina Pashence Jarrett Drew Wertz Olivia Kreider Matthew Whitmoyer Mikayla Lea Helena Woytovich Julia Levan Congratulations are also in order for Gabrielle Geltz who was selected as the winner of Berks Best for the category of Vocational/Technical Skills. This will be the redesigned PSAT, and students will be informed about the changes during their English classes when they return to school in September. In a nutshell, the redesigned PSAT will focus on the knowledge and skills that evidence shows matter most for college and career readiness. The PSAT/NMSQT will have questions that more closely resemble what is happening in today’s classrooms. The length of the redesigned PSAT/NMSQT test will be 2 hours and 45 minutes, which is an increase of 35 minutes. There is also a change in the content of the redesigned test. The components of the old test were Critical Reading, Writing and Math. The components of the redesigned test will be a Reading Test, Writing, Language Test, and a Math Test. You can research more information about the redesigned PSAT/ NMSQT test at: www.collegeboard.org/.../redesigned-psatnmsqt Summer is a great time to prepare for the PSAT/ NMSQT or SAT tests. These athletes embrace our four pillars: God, Family, Academics, and Fun. During a home track meet vs Kutztown, a Kutztown athlete went down with a potential career ending injury. As the ambulance was taking the athlete to the hospital, Christian Betancourt asked his coaches if he could withdraw from the event in order to allow the Kutztown athlete to win Pole Vault in what would be his last meet of his career.
