FROM THE DESK OF W NCAA PRESIDENT MARK EMMERT e gather every year at these championships because we love the uniquely American phenomenon of college sports. We cheer for our alma maters, our students, our families and our friends — not just because we love these games, but because, ultimately, college sports is about providing a pathway to opportunity for nearly half a million student-athletes. Today, however, college sports faces a challenging landscape. We live in an environment where competing priorities can complicate the simple love of sport. No doubt, the lives of college athletes have changed for the better over the last five years, but there is more to be done. As the leaders of college sports, we must ensure our actions align with our values, that college athletes get a fair shake, and that athletics does not conflict with academics. We celebrate what’s best about college athletics and recognize students for their achievements both on and off the field. Behind the scenes, we remain focused on academics, fairness and protecting the health and well-being of student-athletes. College athletics is more than simply “sports.” It is the springboard from which these young men and women will grow and succeed throughout their lives. We aim to create as many opportunities as possible for all college athletes. So let’s celebrate what makes college sports special and applaud these students not only for the wins today, but for what follows in their lives. Enjoy the championship. We celebrate what’s best about college athletics and recognize students for their achievements both on and off the field. Behind the scenes, we remain focused on academics, fairness and protecting the health and well-being of student-athletes.
