Local FAVORITE Being named executive director of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association offers Danielle Donehew a chance to go home again and make a national impact on the game she loves T he new executive director of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association has moved closer to home to make a national impact on the game she loves. Danielle Donehew, who grew up in an Atlanta suburb, became the leader of the Atlanta area-based organization in August, just in time to take part in a dynamic period for the sport. The game’s leaders, spurred by the release of the NCAA-commissioned Women’s Basketball White Paper in June 2013, are engaging in conversations about how to grow the success of women’s basketball. “I need to understand the recommendations, feedback and impressions of our organization,” said Donehew, who spent her first 100 days on the job on what she By Greg Johnson Originally published in NCAA Champion magazine www.ncaachampionmagazine.org called a “listening tour,” gathering input from members of the coaches association. “As I get the feedback, I can put an appropriate plan in place. We have to show our members that there is a value to being a member of the WBCA. We meet their expectations as to what we can provide.” Donehew spent a successful college career in women’s basketball at Georgia Institute of Technology but also counts legendary Tennessee coach Pat Summitt among her early mentors. They first met when Donehew accompanied a high school teammate, LaShonda Stephens, on a recruiting trip to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Now, Donehew is part of a new generation of women’s basketball leaders. “This is a special time in women’s basketball where all of us want to unite,” Donehew said. “We are finding ways to harness our talents and energies to move the game forward.” 1996-2001 — Georgia Tech Danielle Donehew was recruited to Georgia Tech women’s basketball by then head coach Agnus Berenato, whom Donehew calls a mentor. She worked summer camps at Tennessee, where she got to know Pat Summitt. YOU CAN PLAY THE GAME OR YOU CAN CHANGE IT ENTIRELY. She became a Georgia Tech student-assistant coach while finishing her bachelor’s degree in industrial and systems engineering. “Going to Georgia Tech was valuable to me because I was in an environment where academics were a priority,” she said. 2001-08 — Tennessee After graduating from Georgia Tech, Donehew called Summitt to see if she had a graduate assistant position available on her staff. “A few weeks later she called back and said she had an opening and asked if I would like it,” Donehew said. “I almost drove off the road. It all fell into place.” At Tennessee, Donehew was a graduate assistant for a year; director of basketball operations for five years; and assistant athletics director for women’s basketball operations for one. 2008-09 — Atlanta Dream WNBA expansion franchise After Tennessee, Donehew became a consultant to a private investment group in Atlanta whose goal was to bring a WNBA franchise to the city. She was later named executive vice president for the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream expansion team. “It was a great time period for me because I got to learn the pro basketball model,” she said. “We started with a blank piece of paper and began developing what the Atlanta Dream would be.” Among Danielle Donehew’s many mentors is Pat Summitt, who Donehew worked under from 2001-08. UConn’s Geno Auriemma, C. Vivian Stringer of Rutgers and Muffet McGraw of Notre Dame. “The strategy at the conference office was important to learn,” Donehew said. “You have to build relationships with television networks and have game management expectations throughout the league. It was also valuable for me to learn how important it is to have consistent branding across the league.” 2009-13 — Big East Conference When Atlanta Dream owner Ron Terwilliger sold the franchise, Donehew moved to the Big East Conference to become associate commissioner for women’s basketball. The job put her in position to work with legendary coaches such as 2013-14 — American Athletic Conference When the Big East Conference nonFootball Bowl Subdivision schools split from the conference, Donehew was part of the reconstitution of her league office, which eventually became the American Athletic Conference. She remained the associate commissioner for women’s basketball. The league was successful: UConn won both the Division I men’s and women’s basketball championships, and the University of Central Florida won the Fiesta Bowl. “What I learned at the American was the importance of immediate branding and getting the message out and clarifying the next steps,” Donehew said. “It was a huge challenge to rebrand.” For more stories like this, visit NCAA Champion magazine at www.ncaachampionmagazine.org. But let’s not forget why we’re really cheer- ing. College sports, our iconic and treasured American pastimes, are so much more than what you’ll see in these championship events. This year, more than 54,000 student-athletes will compete in an NCAA national championship and share with their teammates a unique sense of joy and accomplishment. But I’ve seen time and time again how the student-athletes who are succeeding at the highest level of sports competition are also achieving impressive academic success and giving back to their communities. One of them at the final site of this very championship will be honored as the sport’s champion student because he or she holds the highest grade point average among the event’s competitors. The Elite 89 award honors their achievement because it represents everything for which the NCAA stands. Athletics plays an essential role in those accomplishments: student-athletes consistently tell me their love for their sport is what drives them to succeed. Ultimately, it’s the success they experience not only on the field, but in the classroom and in life that makes these championships so meaningful. It’s a chance for us all to stand and cheer on the next generation of leaders and innovators who will ultimately drive progress in our communities. It is why the commitment to higher education is a value we all share. And when we cheer for them at these events, we’re really celebrating the hard work, determination and perseverance that helped them ace the test — in their sport and in their studies. A lucky few will hoist a trophy in the air when events like this one are finished, and they will hear the cheers of their elated fans. Just remember that along the path to those 89 moments, more than 19,000 teams will share in a meaningful journey they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. I’m glad you’re here to celebrate one of those moments of student-athlete success. Enjoy the championship. 2015 WINTER CHAMPIONSHIPS CALENDAR Dates and sites for championships finals April 4 and 6 Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis Hosted by Indiana UniversityPurdue University at Indianapolis and the Horizon League March 25-28 Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana Hosted by University of Southern Indiana and the Evansville Sports Corporation March 20-21 Salem Civic Center in Salem, Virginia Hosted by Old Dominion Athletic Conference and the City of Salem April 17-19 Fort Worth Convention Center Arena in Fort Worth Hosted by Texas Woman’s University and Knight Eady Sports Group April 9 and 11 TD Garden in Boston Hosted by Hockey East Association March 27-28 Ridder Arena in Minneapolis Hosted by Northern Collegiate Hockey Association March 11-14 IU Natatorium in Indianapolis Hosted by University of Indianapolis and Indiana Sports Corporation March 18-21 CISD Natatorium in Shenandoah, Texas Hosted by Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference March 13-14 Randal Tyson Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas Hosted by University of Arkansas, Fayetteville and the Fayetteville Sports Commission April 5 and 7 Amalie Arena in Tampa Bay Hosted by University of South Florida and Tampa Bay Sports Commission March 20 and 22 Ridder Arena in Minneapolis Hosted by University of Minnesota, Twin Cities March 13-14 Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama Hosted by University of Alabama-Huntsville March 25, 26 and 28 Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota Hosted by Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and Sioux Falls Sports Authority March 20-21 At a participating campus location March 13-14 JDL Fast Track in WinstonSalem, North Carolina Hosted by Roanoke College and JDL Fast Track March 20-21 Van Noord Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan Hosted by Calvin College March 13-14 UAF Patty Center in Fairbanks, Alaska Hosted by University of Alaska Fairbanks March 19-21 Scottrade Center in St. Louis Hosted by University of Missouri, Columbia and the St. Louis Sports Commission April 9-11 Tropicana Lanes in St. Louis Hosted by University of Central Missouri and the St. Louis Sports Commission March 11-14 Olympic Center in Lake Placid, New York Hosted by St. Lawrence University and the Olympic Regional Development Authority March 13-14 Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis Hosted by Maryville University of St. Louis and the St. Louis Sports Commission March 19-22 French Field House in Columbus, Ohio Hosted by The Ohio State University March 26-28 Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Iowa City, Iowa Hosted by University of Iowa March 13-14 Giant Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania Hosted by Elizabethtown College April 9-11 Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Oklahoma Hosted by University of Oklahoma March 19-21 Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina Hosted by North Carolina State University and Greensboro Sports Commission DIVISION II • BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA IN HUNTSVILLE AND BIRMINGHAM CROSSPLEX, HOSTS For up-to-date schedules, live scores and video, visit COMMITTEE This official NCAA championship program is published by the National Collegiate Athletic Association and IMG with support from the NCAA’s official media partners and corporate champions/corporate partners. 2015 NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship Official NCAA® Media Partners T he NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship is under the control, direction and supervision of the Division II Women’s Basketball Committee.
