Armored Harsh Environment Cable
Armored Harsh Environment cables utilize AFL’s patented, laser welded tube to technology
which provide a hermetically sealed package for the optical fibers within. The armor
wires provide improved crush and tensile performance while enabling cable flexibility.
316 stainless steel wires provide strong corrosion resistance. PVC free, flame retardant
jackets are available to provide additional long term corrosion and chemical resistance.
Users can select gel-filled or gel-free tubes. Gel is useful in preventing water migration for
outdoor applications. For indoor applications, gel can be used, but is not required.
Armored Harsh Environment cables can be used in a variety of applications including
those which require survivability and signal integrity during significant harsh environment
generating events.
These cables can be designed and tested for Class 1E safety related functions under an
Appendix B and NQA-1 quality assurance program.

LSZH Breakout Cables are the product of choice for indoor and outdoor industrial
applications where increased resistance to cyclic flex, compressive forces (crush),
impact or higher tensile loads are desirable. In accordance with NRC regulatory
guidance, this cable design features a complete absence of PVC and other halogenated
polymers which have the potential to create an “acid rain” effect when sprinklers
interact with smoke during a fire, thus undermining the potential reliability of other
equipment throughout an affected power plant space. LSZH Breakout cables are
highly flame retardant and meet nuclear, industrial and NEC general purpose flame
and smoke test requirements. Each fiber is protected by 2.4 mm sub-cable which can
be “broken-out” from the cable at key equipment junctures. Aramid yarn strength
members in each sub-cable allow each fiber to be terminated in a way that protects
the fiber from strain during mate-demate cycles, tension or bending at the back of
the connector. This is highly desirable for long term connection assembly reliability.
Additional aramid yarn strength members are coupled between sub-cables and the
semi-pressure extruded outer jacket for better installation strength and for better
strain relief when this rugged cable is used with round, military style, hermaphroditic
connectors that are often specified for harsh environment connections. The resulting
LSZH breakout cable provides the best blend of features for long term fiber optic link
reliability within power plant environments.

Low Smoke Zero Halogen Distribution Cable
LSZH Distribution cables are economical, multi-purpose cables for running fiber cable
between communications closets and equipment rooms, where fibers are terminated in
distribution enclosures. Use of flame retardant polyethylene eliminates the use of PVC
and other halogenated compounds, consistent with the guidance of NRC Regulatory
Guide 1.189. Additionally, this cable family’s OFNR-LS listing makes it suitable for
installation in a wide variety of spaces including building risers. Generally this cable will
be run in protected raceways and conduit, while more robust cables like the Indoor/
Outdoor Loose Tube cable and Breakout Cables are suited for industrial facility cable
tray deployment. The cable offers nuclear facilities an affordable method for supporting
in-building data communications links outside of the nuclear island, while using a cable
which exceeds telecommunciations industry standards for indoor fiber optic cables and
guidance from the NRC.

PVDF Jacketed, Plenum Distribution Cable
PVDF Jacketed Distribution Cables are economical, multi-purpose, robust cables for
running longer lengths of fiber cable between distribution enclosures throughout an
industrial facility. Use of PVDF (fluoropolymer) jacket minimizes the use of PVC, consistent with the guidance of NRC Regulatory Guide 1.189, while providing a high level of
resistance to stretching, tear, abrasion, moisture and chemicals. Despite the rugged feel
of the cable, it maintains a high degree of flexibility. The cable is plenum listed and can
be used in any space requiring flame spread and limited smoke generation requirements
including plenum spaces, building risers, cable trays and general purpose industrial installations. Waterblocking strength members and a UV/fungus/moisture resistant outer
jacket make the cable suitable for installation in conduit betweeen buildings when the
conduit depth or outdoor temperatures prevent cables exposure < -20 deg C.

Fiber Optic Cable Assemblies
Fiber Optic Cable Assemblies for the nuclear market utilize the most reliable brands of
each connector style on nuclear suitable, LSZH or plenum cables. Zipcord or ruggedized,
breakout style cables, can be selected for 2 fiber deployments, depending on the length
of the assembly and where it will be routed. For routing of more than 2 fibers between
locations, breakout style cables are typically specified to provide greater resistance to
impact and crush forces that could be imparted in open trays and ladder racks.
Use of pre-terminated assemblies eliminates labor-intensive field termination, yet
provides assurance of reliable performance since terminations are performed by trained
personnel using factory qualified processes and test procedures.
Applications
• Head-end termination
to a fiber “backbone”
• Termination of fiber rack systems
• Multi-floor deployment where select
fibers are used at each floor
• Terminations between equipment racks
• Cable trays
• General purpose industrial
• Nuclear power plants
• Splicing “qualified” pigtails
to “qualified” cables for safety
related applications
Features
• 2-24 fibers. Each fiber has its own jacket and aramid yarn reinforcement for rugged protection
• Flexible for ease of routing
• RoHS compliant - Riser, Plenum and LSZH rated cables available
• 1 meter standard breakout (other lengths are custom)
• Cable type tested to meet or exceed ANSI/ICEA S-83-596/GR-409-CORE
• Telcordia GR-326 and TIA 568-C3 compliant connector assemblies
•Breakout cables offer superior resistance to crush and impact forces
•Cable outer jacket and sub-unit jackets are PVC free
•Minimizes use of PVC consistent with US NRC Regulatory Guideline 1.189
“Fire Protection for Operating Nuclear Power Plants”
•Cables meet or exceed IEEE 383-1974 flame test requirements

Fujikura 70S Fusion Splicer
70S
The Fujikura 70S is the world’s fastest and most robust core alignment fusion splicer.
Incorporating the proven ruggedized features pioneered by Fujikura, the 70S has
added automated and enhanced user control features to increase splicing efficiency.
A user programmable, automated wind protector expedites the splicing process by
automatically closing to initiate the splice process, and opening upon splice completion.
Fully programmable “auto open sheath clamps” open one sheath clamp, after the
tensile test, to prepare the fiber for removal. A new automated “clamshell design” tube
heater applies heat to both sides of the splice protection sleeve resulting in a 14-second
shrink time. The result is a total splice process time of approximately 21 seconds!
Ruggedness and durability are greatly enhance by a mirror-less optical system and
"severe-impact resistant" monitor. Battery capacity is now 200 splices/shrinks.
An innovative transit case doubles as a built-in or mobile workstation and makes
splicing easier than ever before.

C860 QUAD OTDR and Certification Test Kit
The C840 and C850 can be used together to perform Tier 1
dual wavelength MM (850/1300 nm) and SM (1310/1550 nm)
auto loss tests of one or two fibers in one or both directions as
well as measure both loss and length of the fibers and compare
to industry standards (TIA/ISO/EN), applications and userdefined thresholds values to certify the fibers. Either unit can be
identified as the Main or Remote.
The user may test two fibers at two wavelengths bi-directionally
and store the results into the main unit. Featuring rich file
naming, the Job setup wizard allows the user to define both the
cable and fiber end locations, creating easily identifiable trace
files, which are managed into Job and Cable folders.
The C850 OTDR and C840 Certification tester work with the
DFS1 Digital FiberScope.

DFS1 Digital FiberScope
The DFS1 Digital FiberScope supports magnified video inspection
of optical fiber connector end-faces during fiber optic cable
and connector installation and maintenance. The ergonomically
designed hand-held unit illuminates fiber end-faces and delivers
magnified images via USB port to AFL’s M-series OTDRs
(M210, M200, M700) or C-series OTDRs and Certification Testers
(C840, C850, C860, C880). FiberScope software displays, labels
and stores captured images as part of connector installation
and/or maintenance records.
DFS1 Digital FiberScope
A large adjustment knob permits easy focusing using real-time
view. Once focused, a conveniently located trigger button signals
the attached display device to capture the image for analysis and
archiving. The scope’s ergonomic shape and control locations
support comfortable, single-handed operation.
Clean connector
The DFS1 is powered through the USB port, eliminating the need
for an additional battery or AC power supplies. Electronic video
inspection eliminates all danger of eye damage from active (lit)
fibers carrying either visible or infrared wavelengths.
An extensive assortment of adapters supports inspection of
a wide range of optical jumper cable connector ferrules and
bulkhead adapters. Bulkhead adapter tips are available in
multiple lengths as well as 60° angle. Connector adapters are
available for PC, UPC or APC polished ferrules in 1.25 mm,
2.5 mm and other diameters. The DFS1 is available in three
different kits which provide either PC/UPC adapters, APC
adapters or no adapters.

VFI2 and HiLite Visual Fault Identifiers
The NOYES VFI2 and HiLite visible red laser sources from AFL are designed to
troubleshoot faults on fiber optic cables. Light generated by these units will escape from
sharp bends and breaks in jacketed or bare fibers, as well as poorly-mated connectors.
They can quickly identify faults in fiber optic jumper cables, distribution frames, patch
panels, and splice trays.
The HiLite and VFI2 are an excellent complement to an OTDR because they can locate
faults inside the OTDR’s dead-zone. Other applications include end-to-end continuity
checks, identifying connectors in patch panels and fibers during splicing operations.
VFI2 Visual Fault Identifier
Trace cables in messy or undocumented setups. A VFI unit provides a quick means
of finding the “other end” from amongst cluttered cables. Simply connect the VFI
to one end and look for the visual red light transmitted out the opposite connector.
Fiber Coupled Lasers for Best Test Results: NOYES VFI2 units deliver 1 mW of output
power into 9/125 single-mode fiber to ensure long range and exceptional brightness
for locating defects in single-mode and multimode fibers.
The VFI2 and HiLite units use a threaded connector adapter interface to support adapter
removal for connector cleaning and field changing of adapter styles. The 2.5 mm adapter
accepts PC and angled connectors FC, SC, ST, etc. and the 1.25 mm adapter accepts LC
and MU connectors.
A Visible Fault Indicator (VFI) is an essential tool for fiber technicians.

SMLP5-5 Test Kit
The SMLP5-5 Test Kit with Wave ID, Set Reference, and Data
Storage combines the OPM5-2D optical power meter and
OLS4 integrated LED and laser light source and is ideally suited
for testing fiber optic networks with hybrid (single-mode and
multimode) cables.
The OLS4 features 850/1300 nm LED output from a multimode
output port and 1310/1550 nm laser output from a single-mode
output port. Each wavelength may be transmitted individually
at CW or with user selectable modulated Tone(SM output). Also,
each wavelength may be transmitted with Wave ID. Both output
ports are equipped with UCI based removable adapters to allow
the output connectors to be inspected and cleaned.
The OPM5-2D is a full-featured, hand-held optical power
meter designed for measuring optical power in premise, telco,
or broadband networks and for performing insertion loss
measurements on multimode or single-mode fiber optic links.
The standard Wave ID feature (when used with NOYES OLS series
light sources) automatically detects and sets the wavelength(s),
preventing setup and measurement errors. It significantly
increases efficiency and reduces technician errors—and saves
testing time—by eliminating the need to test each wavelength
individually. The OPM5-2D stores optical references for each
calibrated wavelength and offers multiple test tone detection
for fiber identification.
Features (SMLP5-5 Test Kit)
•• Wave ID reduces test time
•• Hand-held, rugged, lightweight
•• Cost-effective, easy-to-use
•• N.I.S.T traceable

•• Storage capability >500 fibers
•• USB port for download of stored data
•• TRM™ PC Reporting Tool (Windows® compatible)
•• Apply certification rules to test results
•• Create professional test reports
•• Archive test results
Data Storage of Test Results
The OPM5-2D File Management system allows technicians
to organize test results into multiple files and transfer stored
results via USB to a PC for analyzing, generating reports, and
printing. The supplied powerful PC Analysis and Reporting Tool
(TRM® - Test Results Management software) allows users to
apply industry standards based rules to test results and create
comprehensive certification reports. Users can generate network
Pass/Fail results demonstrating compliance to industry standards
and illustrate headroom. TRM is a Windows® compatible
software. The SMLP5-5 test kit is fully N.I.S.T. traceable.
Applications
•• Certify multimode and single-mode links per TIA/EIA standards
•• Fiber identification prior to splicing
•• Passive Optical Networks (PON) testing
