This Deadly Gas
ACT FAST.
CALL 911 OR 1-800-75-CONED
(1-800-752-6633)
Know the signs of a gas leak:
Smell—an unpleasant odor like rotten
eggs
Sight—a white cloud, mist, fog, or
bubbles in standing water
Sound—roaring, hissing, or whistling
If you smell gas inside, leave immediately and take others with you. If the
odor is faint, open a window before
leaving.
If you’re outside, move away from
where you think there could be a leak.
DO NOT use a phone; light a match;
start a car, or turn on or off lights, flashlights, appliances, or anything else that
could create a spark and cause the gas
to explode.
Once you’re safely away from the area,
call 911 or 1-800-75-CONED (1-800752-6633). National Grid customers
call 1-718-643-4050.
Don’t assume someone else has
already called. You can report leaks
anonymously.

Don’t Mess with Gas
Cutting corners when you’re working
with natural gas is dangerous business.
Construction on gas lines should only be
done by licensed contractors with the
approval of NYC or local municipalities,
and the consultation and inspection by
Con Edison.
Landlords or contractors who alter or
tamper with gas lines are risking people’s
lives, fines, and jail time. Do you suspect
illegal tampering with a gas line? Call us
at 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633).

frayed wires. Don’t mend it, replace it!
2 Don’t place electric cords under carpets or furniture.
3 Never attempt to retrieve an electrical product that has fallen in water.
4 Never staple or nail cords to walls or baseboards.
5 Don’t overload outlets or power strips. Overheated wires start fires.
6 Never remove the third prong from a plug to make it fit a two-prong outlet.

the power of Giving
We support hundreds of nonprofits that help strengthen neighborhoods, sustain communities, and
improve lives.
Building Community
Through Art
Nearly two decades ago, a group of
New York City artists, educators, and
activists founded Groundswell with
the belief that art combined with
community activism produces powerful outcomes. Nearly 500 murals
have been completed working with
groups of underserved and economically disadvantaged students and
professional artists. With Con Edison’s
support, Groundswell’s projects
beautify neighborhoods and engage
kids and young adults in societal
transformation.
Visit groundswell.nyc.
The Amazing Maize Maze
This fall, find your way out of Queens
County Farm Museum’s 3-acre corn
labyrinth, the Amazing Maize Maze,
sponsored by Con Edison. You and
your family will begin your adventure
with a “stalk talk” to prepare you for the
challenge of finding clues and solving puzzles to make your way out the
maze. Get lost every weekend (weather permitting) from Sept. 19 to Oct. 25,
11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission: $9 adults,
$5 children (ages 4 to 11), free for kids
3 and under. Visit queensfarm.org.
Help keep the lights and heat on for
a New Yorker in need. Con Edison’s
EnergyShare program, a fund administered
by HeartShare Human Services of New
York, helps eligible residential customers
get a grant of up to $200 for their energy
bills, once every five years. The program
is funded with tax-deductible contributions from caring customers, Con Edison
employees, and the public. Each dollar is
matched by Con Edison. Add exactly $1
to your monthly bill and it will be donated
automatically. Or, text the word “SHARE”
to 27722 to make a one-time donation of
$5. Visit conEd.com/energyshare to learn
more, or call 1-800-75-CONED.
