The Mean Green is coming off a sevenpoint come-from-behind victory over Denver to snap a six-game losing streak. North Texas is going after only its second winning streak of the season and can win back-to-back games at home for the first time at home as well. Florida Atlantic is coming off a 12-point win over FIU to win its second game in league play. The Owls are only 1-5 on the road this season. The Coaches North Texas is led by first-year head coach Shanice Stephens. She begins her coaching career with the Mean Green after spending time as the associate head coach at Clemson and Rice University. She is the youngest head coach in the Sun Belt Conference and the second youngest in the state of Texas. Stephens picked up her first career coaching victory over UMKC. Her record is 6-11 through 17 games. Florida Atlantic is led by ninth-year head coach Chancellor Dugan. She led the Owls to the NCAA Tournament in 2005-06 and a 20-win season. In her nine-years at FAU she has a record of 116-162. Her overall coaching record is 275-235. The Last Time Out DENTON, Texas (1/14/2009) – Four players scored in double-figures, including a careerhigh 17 points from freshman Mansa El and the Mean Green snapped a six-game losing streak with a 76-69 win over Denver Wednesday evening at The Super Pit. North Texas (6-11, 2-4) went on a 9-0 run after the game was tied 63-63, including four points from Brittney James and a clutch three-pointer from Yari Escalera. The Mean Green tied a season-high with 25 offensive rebounds and made 15-of-16 from the free throw line in the second half to help North Texas get a much-needed victory. Escalera continued her hot play of late by scoring a game-high 18 points, 14 of which came in the second half. She also nailed 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. After scoring only 25 points in the first half, North Texas began the second half on a 19-6 run to take the lead for the first time since the 17:37 mark in the opening stages of the contest. Escalera and El came out of the locker room blazing to start second half. Each player scored five consecutive points in the midst of a 10-0 run, capped off by an Escalera three-point play to give the Mean Green a 44-40 lead. Weekly Media Luncheon During the basketball season, North Texas will conduct a weekly media luncheon every Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Super Pit. The luncheon will be held in the press room of the Super Pit and Coach Stephens will be available for the media. Post-Game Policies The North Texas locker room is closed after home games. Coach Stephens and requested players will be available for interviews in the Media Room in The Super Pit. The Series North Texas and Florida Atlantic are meeting for only the third-time in series history. The Mean Green have won both previous meeting and they have both been by the same margin, eight points. North Texas won on the road in Boca Raton last season 74-66. The only meeting in Denton was an 80-72 win by the Mean Green in 2007. Second Half Surge The Mean Green made a second-half rally from nine-points down to defeat the Denver Pioneers. North Texas scored 51 points in the second half to complete the rally, the most second half points since scoring 52 points against UA-Monticello on November 21, 2007. The Mean Green’s previous second half high this season was 48 points against Charleston Southern. Monster Mansa Freshman Mansa El turned in a career performance against the the Denver Pioneers. El shattered her career-high in points with 17 and assists with five. She was pivitol down the stretch, scoring 14 of her 17 points in the second half. It was the first double figure game of El’s career. El also had her second best assist-to-turnover ratio of the season with five assists and just three turnovers. Starting To Catch On Yari Escalera has turned into a new player since moving into the starting lineup. Escalera has made four straight starts and is averaging 15.5 points a game and added another 18 points in the win over Denver. Escalera, already a great 3-point shooter, has taken her long distance game to another level. Escalera in the last four games has hit 12 3-pointers while hitting 63 percent of her 3-pointers. While Escalera has been torrid from the field, she has also gotten things done on the defensive side. Escalera in the last four games has averaged three steals. Its Okay To Steal One area that Shanice Stephens has focused on is getting turnovers and mistakes and the Mean Green is producing in that area. Through 17 games, North Texas has 189 steals and has a chance to challenge the school record which stands at 370. North Texas is on pace for 337 steals this season, which would be the fourth most in school history. More impressive is that number would be the most steals in a single season for North Texas in over 24 years. Welcome Back Senior Jo Hall returned from her suspension and saw 19 minutes of action against Denver. While Hall had to shake off eight games worth of rust, she was good for eight points and five rebounds, right on her season average before the suspension. Group Activities While the Mean Green as a team has been active creating turnovers, a trio of players has been racking up steals. Amber Jackson, Brittney James, and Tricia Lee are on pace for more than 50 steals this season. North Texas hasn’t had three players with 50 steals or more since the 1998-99 season. Jackson has 33, James 33, and Lee 32 on the season. The Magic Numbers The Mean Green is 5-2 this season when holding its opponent to 70 points or less but 1-9 when allowing more than 70 points this season. In terms of field goal percentage, NT is 3-1 when holding its opponent to less than 40 percent this season but only 3-10 when allowing better than 40 percent shooting this season. North Texas is 3-9 this season when scoring 70 points or less but 3-2 when crossing the 70-point threshold. Going For Two Amber Jackson recorded her 10th doubledouble of the season against Denver and she North Texas Basketball On The Air For the seventh straight season all home and away North Texas basketball games can be heard on KNTU-FM (88.1) which broadcast at 100,000 watts from the North Texas campus and can be heard throughout the Dallas/Ft. Worth Region. In his seventh season of broadcasting and his fifth as the play-by-play voice of North Texas women’s basketball, Steven Bartolotta will broadcast all 29 regular season games. Not since Clara Campbell in the 1986-87 season has a North Texas player averaged a double-double for the year. Jackson is at 16.8 points a game and 10.0 rebounds a game. She has 12 double-doubles for her career and has scored in double figures in 63 games for her career. Two Of A Kind Amber Jackson and Brittney James have a chance to make a little history at North Texas. Both players are eyeing the 1,000 point club in scoring this year and if they both did, they would be the first duo to score 1,000 points for their career in the same season in school history. Jackson topped the 1,000 point plateau against Houston. James has 802 points for her career and is averaging 11.2 points a game. She needs to average just under 15 points a game to have a chance to reach 1,000 points. She is on pace to have 948 at the end of the season. Stacking Up In The Sun Belt North Texas ranks in the top 5 of 10 different statistical categories in the Sun Belt Conference. There’s Only One Amber Jackson came into the season with a lot of accolades and is living up to those honors. Jackson and Arnika Brown of Western Kentucky are the only players in the Sun Belt Conference that rank in the top 5 in scoring, rebounding, and offensive rebounds. Jackson is the only the only player in the league to rank in the top 10 in points, rebounds, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, blocked shots, steals, offensive and defensive rebounds. Welcome To The Club Amber Jackson continues to clear hurdles and break records this season. Jackson became the 11th player in school history to reach 1,000 points for her career. Jackson now has her sights set on moving up that list. She is 6th on the career points list after passing Lisa Risinger with 28 points against New Orleans. At her current pace Jackson is on track to finish as the fifth all-time leading scorer at North Texas. She is just the sixth player in school history to score 1,200 points for her career. Jackson also has her eye on becoming the all-time leading rebounder in school history. She needs only 51 more rebounds to pass Empress Drane. Currently Jackson is on pace for 300. rebounds this season, which would put her at 796 for her career and well ahead of Drane. Jackson is ranked in the top 100 in three different categories. She is 27th in the nation in rebounds, averaging 10.0 boards a game. Jackson is 56th in the country in scoring at 17.1 points a game and 75th in the nation in field goal percentage at just under 49 percent. As a team the Mean Green is 28th in the nation in steals per game, averaging 11.4 steals a game. The Last Time vs. Florida Atlantic BOCA RATON, Fla. (1/19/08) – Amber Jackson was a one-woman wrecking crew, paving the way for a 74-66 Mean Green win at Florida Atlantic on Saturday. Jackson scored the final eight points of the first half, and the first six points of the second to open a doubledigit North Texas (9-10, 4-3) lead that Florida Atlantic (4-12, 0-7) wouldn’t overcome. Jackson was just a point shy of her career high with 22 total points, good for her third career 20-point outing and fifth consecutive game in double figures. Brittney James, Erica Howard and Jo Hall joined Jackson in double-figures for North Texas. Hall tallied her second career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Owls hung step for step with the Mean Green until the forward trio of Jo Hall, Erica Howard and Jackson charged the NT offense mid-first half. About The Owls Florida Atlantic snapped a three-game losing streak with a 12-point win over FIU. The Owls had been struggling of late having lost 10 of their last 11 games until beating FIU. Florida Atlantic is just 1-5 away from home this season. They are led by junior guard Carla Stubbs who is averaging 12.8 points a game. NT ON TV North Texas will be on television January 31 at Western Kentucky as part of the television package with ESPN and the Sun Belt Conference. Along with the regional television package, North Texas Television (NTTV) will broadcast selected home games starting in December. The Sun Belt Conference has partnered with ESPN for 30 seasons, the longest running relationship between the network and any conference. During the 2008-09 basketball season, the Sun Belt-ESPN Regional Television Network looks to reach a league-record number of households around the country. In additon to the regular season broadcasts, the Sun Belt-ERT Network will televise action from the 2009 Aeropostale Sun Belt Tournaments in March, including the Women’s semifinals and championship game on March 10. North Texas Signs Top Talent North Texas women’s basketball inked four players to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period. The four players will make up the first recruiting class for Coach Stephens and join transfers Brittney Hudson and Niqky Hughes to sign with the Mean Green. Stephens added two guards in Raquel Cuffie and Lakevia “KeKe” Taylor and two forwards in Jasmine Godbolt and Brittany Thompson. Godbolt, one of the top players in the DFW metroplex, was a key player in the run of Naaman Forest High School to the state tournament last season. Thompson, the other forward, put up some of the best numbers in the state last season as she averaged 26 points a game and had a state leading 22 rebounds a contest. Cuffie is one of the premier guards in the North Carolina region and played for perennial powerhouse Oak Hill her sophomore season, helping lead them to a national title. Taylor is one of the best rising point guards in Texas, averaging over six assists per contest as a junior and earning All-Region honors. The Mean Green plays 17 road games this season, which ties the school record set just two seasons ago. North Texas has 18 games away from home, one of those however is a neutral site game with Charleston Southern. The good news is that the longest road swing is to start the year as the Mean Green plays its first five games away from home. Its the first time since the 1998-99 season that the Mean Green will play five straight games to open the year away from home. Most road games in school history in a season 2008-09: 17 games 2006-07: 17 games 1986-87: 16 games No Place Like Home North Texas has certainly enjoyed the friendly confines of the Super Pit over the last nine years. Since the start of the program in 1976, the Mean Green has won 388 games, made the NCAA tournament in 1986, and had two WNIT appearances. The most wins in a single season came in 2001-02 when North Texas had 21 victories. Over the years North Texas has had 23 players named all-conference. WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT SHANICE STEPHENS HEAD COACH SHANICE STEPHENS On April 16, 2008 Shanice Stephens was named the University of North Texas’ fifth women’s basketball head coach by University President Dr. Gretchen M. Bataille and Athletic Director Rick Villarreal. Known around the country as one of the best recruiters, Stephens has spent the last three seasons as the associate head coach at Clemson and was at Rice for nine seasons prior to that. Stephens picked up her first career win as a head coach against UMKC. Stephens, 37, is the youngest head coach in the Sun Belt Conference and the second-youngest Division I head coach in the state of Texas. While at Clemson, Stephens was the recruiting coordinator that saw the Lady Tigers sign some of the best classes in school history, including the nation’s 22nd ranked class in 2006 by The All-Star Girls Report. Lele Hardy, the first recruit to sign under McKinney, had one of the most prolific freshman campaigns in program history. Hardy was named to the 2007 ACC All-Freshman team and set numerous school freshman records in 2006-07. “I have had the pleasure of working with Shanice Stephens for 12 years. Hardy collected 98 for the season to rank second all-time in program history. “I think she has every critical element to be ultra successful at North Texas. She can really teach and I’ve seen that first hand. She communicates in varied ways and it’s all earmarked to reach each person. What sets her apart is she has the passion but also compassion, and that’s very rare that you see people combine both. She is a tremendous teacher and an even better person, but she will never lose sight of her number one job which is to impact the lives of student-athletes in a positive manner” --Jeff Van Gundy, ESPN Analyst and Former NBA Coach Stephens had a significant impact in the development of four-time All-WAC selection, All-Time Top 50 WAC player and former WNBA player Marla Brumfield. Under Stephens’ guidance, Brumfield finished first in Rice history with 311 steals, and third in Lady Owl history with 1,703 career points scored. Stephens also coached Charonda Wilson, a two-time WAC All-Defensive Team selection. Stephens spent three years as an Athletic Amateur Union (AAU) coach in Oklahoma, guiding her 1996 team to the state championship. During her time at Rice from 1996-2005, Stephens was part of program that reached heights never before seen by the women’s basketball team. Rice won 20 games or more in six of the nine seasons and reached the NCAA Tournament twice (2000, 2005) along with trips to the WNIT in 1998, 1999, 2002, and 2004. Along with the six post-season appearances for Rice, Stephens helped the Lady Owls to 179 wins and was part of the program that averaged just under 20 wins per season in her time at Rice. The 2004-05 season saw Rice capture a school record 24 wins and its second WAC Tournament title and trip to the NCAA Tournament. In 1999-00 Stephens helped lead Rice to the WAC Tournament Championship and the school’s first ever NCAA Tournament berth. Stephens earned her undergraduate degree in 1993 from Oklahoma State, where she earned two letters and was a member of two NCAA Tournament teams. The Cowgirls advanced to the Sweet 16 of the national tournament during her senior season. Stephens started at point guard for Austin Peay during the 1989-90 season, her first year of eligibility. She earned a masters degree in 1996 from the University of Central Oklahoma. The former Shanice Bottoms is married to Garrett Stephens. She has two daughters, Sydney Alexandria (7) and Lauryn A’lyce (1), a son Grayson David , and two stepsons Garrett (13) and Grant (8). (11/17/08) – Despite a career-high 21 points from Tricia Lee, the Marshall Thundering Herd held off a feisty North Texas women’s basketball team to win 78-69 from the Cam Henderson Center. Lee had five 3-pointers on the night including one with 2:26 remaining to cut the Marshall lead to 70-67. The Thundering Herd (2-0) though answered back with a lay-up from Alix Barnette and outscored North Texas 9-2 in the final two minutes to pick up the win. It was a back and forth game that saw North Texas break open a close game in the first half with a 12-3 run to take a 33-26 lead with three minutes to play in the half. Marshall answered back with a run of its own to end the first half. The Thundering Herd got a basket at the buzzer from Casey Baker to cap off a 10-1 run to close the half and take a 36-34 lead into the break. North Texas (0-1) came out strong to start the second half taking a six point, 48-42, five minutes in thanks to 10 quick points from guard Brittney James. Marshall had another answer as post Tynikki Crook proved to be a physical presence down low. Crook fueled a Thundering Herd 9-0 run to give Marshall a 65-57 lead with seven minutes to play. North Texas had one last rally but it came up short. Crook led all scorers with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Joining Lee in double figures for North Texas was James who had 13, Amber Jackson with 12, and Jo Hall with 11 points. KANSAS CITY, Missouri (11/22/08) – Brittney James scored a game-high 23 points and Amber Jackson recorded a double-double (15 points, 11 rebounds) to help Shanice Stephens and the Mean Green record their first win of the season in a 80-74 victory over University of Missouri-Kansas City. After a high scoring first half, North Texas (1-1) held the Kangaroos to only 30 percent shooting from the field and 34 points in the second half. North Texas never trailed after gaining a 21-19 lead at the 10:06 mark and eventually pushed their first half lead to points before they went into the half with a 45-40 lead. The Mean Green came out of the gates strong in the second half by going on a 14-7 run that was capped by a Brittani Bailey jumper to extend North Texas’ lead to 59-47. Bailey had her best game of the season with 11 points in 20 minutes of action. UMKC (1-2) made a run late by trimming the lead to 78-74 with 39 seconds remaining but never got any closer as James made two clutch free throws to secure the win. Overall North Texas shot 53 percent from the field, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. The Mean Green had 22 steals, the fifth most in school history, and forced 34 Islander turnovers to pick up their second straight road win. “We picked up the intensity on the defensive end but we are still a work in progress,” said coach Shanice Stephens. “We have some things that we need to work on but to get a road win is always good”. The Mean Green (2-1) never trailed in the game, leading wire-towire. North Texas turned the Islander mistakes into 25 points and had nine different players with steals. The Mean Green jumped on the Islanders from the start, taking a 13-5 lead seven minutes into the game. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi never got any closer than nine points in the first half. The second half was controlled by the Mean Green as they stretched their lead out to 16 points at 47-31 with 10 minutes to play. The Islanders (1-3) made one final run late in the game to cut the lead to eight, but a layup by Tricia Lee with two minutes to play ended the comeback. Amber Jackson also had double figures on the night for the 49th time of her career with 12 points while notching a career-best six steals in the game. SAN ANTONIO, Texas (11/28/08) – Jo Hall tied her career-high with 25 points and North Texas won its third straight game with a 65-61 over UTSA in the opening game of the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic. The Mean Green (3-1) rallied from a nine-point first-half deficit, made a key defensive stop, and four free throws down the stretch to hold off the Roadrunners. With North Texas leading 61-59, UTSA (1-4) had a chance to tie the game with 18 seconds left but Amber Jackson blocked the shot of Onika Anderson and the Mean Green grabbed the rebound. Hall and Yari Escalera finished the game off from the free throw line with four straight makes. The Mean Green had an early 10-9 lead, but UTSA went on a 13-2 run to open up a nine-point lead at 21-12 with eight minutes left in the first half. Hall single handily kept North Texas in the game as she went 7-for-7 in the first half and keyed a 20-7 run over the next five minutes. UTSA scored the final five points of the half to take one point lead into the break at 33-32. The Mean Green opened the second half with a 12-6 run to lead by five at 44-39. North Texas grew the lead to 11 at 56-45 with six minutes to play after five straight points by Escalera. UTSA made one final push late in the game to get the lead to two points but came up short. Jackson finished with 15 and 13 rebounds, her second double-double of the season and fifth of her career. James scored a career-high 34 points in the game but her game-winner at the buzzer fell just shy. Charleston Southern capped a furious second half rally after trailing by nine-points at the half by hitting nine 3-pointers and 60 percent of their shots. The Buccaneers (3-4) began their rally to start the second half after North Texas dominated the opening 20 minutes. Charleston Southern had an 11-2 run in the first three minutes of the half to tie the game up at 49-49. The Mean Green continued to maintain the lead until a 3-pointer by Kelsey Wasmer with 10 minutes to play gave the Buccaneers their first lead of the game at 69-67. Charleston Southern pushed its lead to 10-points at 83-73 with 6:51 to play. The Mean Green began its rally with three 3-pointers, one from Tricia Lee and two from James. A Lee lay-up with 1:31 to play made it a one-point game at 93-92, but Pam Tolbert hit a jumper from the baseline to put the Bucs up by three again at 95-92. A free throw by Lydia Johnson made it a four-point lead at 96-92 but Lee had another lay-up with 29 seconds to make is just a two-point Charleston Southern lead. Tolbert missed two free throws with 24 seconds to give the Mean Green a chance. Trailing by two, 96-94, James was fouled with six seconds to play while shooting a 3-pointer. She missed the first two free throws before making the last one to cut it to a one-point game at 96-95. Tolbert made one of two free throws to give Charleston Southern a 97-95 lead before the final miss by James. Amber Jackson recorded her second straight double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds as Lee had 15 points an Jo Hall added 16 points. Amber Jackson scored 21 points to lead North Texas as she became the 10th player in school history to eclipse the 1,000 career point mark with 1,008 current points. However, the Mean Green (3-3) struggled from the field shooting only 28 percent, including 21 percent from three point territory (5-of-23). North Texas also had 24 turnovers for the game and allowed four Houston players to score in double figures, including a game-high 23 points from Porsche Landry. El gave North Texas a 69-67 lead after completing a three-point play with 28 seconds left to play. The freshman went to the line once again 10 seconds later after forcing a turnover and then promptly being fouled. She made both free throws to seal the win for the Mean Green. Down by as many as 14 points in the first half, the Mean Green tied the game at 40-40 after going on a 13-2 run to start the second half. North Texas kept within single digits of the Crusaders and took its first lead with four minutes to go in the game. NT outscored Valparaiso in the second half, 44-29. Amber Jackson led the Mean Green with her fourth straight doubledouble, 15 points and 10 rebounds. Seniors Tricia Lee and Jo Hall joined Jackson in double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Mansa El tied a career high with eight points.The Crusaders held a 58-49 lead with 9:31 left in the game. NT posted three straight threepointers by Yari Escalera, Mansa El and Jo Hall, tying the game at 58-58. Jackson completed a three-point play after being fouled to give North Texas its first lead of the game, 61-60, with 4:24 on the clock. She also tied a career high with six points. The Mean Green held the edge in rebounds, 46-38. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (12/9/08) – It was another nail-biter for the North Texas (4-4) women’s basketball team but they came up three points short as New Mexico (8-1) held on for a 66-63 win at The Pit. In a game that featured 14 lead changes, the Lobos scored the game’s final eight points and the 3-pointer by Brittney James at the buzzer came up short. After an opening run of 9-2 to start the game for New Mexico, the Mean Green answered with a 16-4 run of their own to take an 18-13 lead with 11 minutes to play in the half. The two teams traded baskets and the lead the final 11 minutes of the half but North Texas led by two points at the break 32-30. The second half saw the Mean Green open up a four-point lead at 44-40 with 13 minutes left before the Lobos went on an 8-0 run to take a 48-44 lead. Amber Jackson ended the run with a basket that sparked North Texas on an 11-2 run. Leading 55-50 with seven minutes to play, the Mean Green surrendered six straight points to New Mexico as they retook the lead with six minutes to play. North Texas responded again with 7-0 run with under four minutes remaining capped off by another Jackson basket. With North Texas up 63-58 with 2:37, the Lobos made one final run. Two North Texas turnovers lead to five straight points to even the game up at 63-63 with 1:13 to play. SMU (3-5) turned the North Texas (4-5) mistakes into 28 points sending the Mean Green to its second straight loss. “We just had way too many mistakes to beat a team like SMU and we have to take care of the ball better than that if we are going to be successful,” said North Texas coach Shanice Stephens. “We have a lot of work to do to get better but it starts with taking care of the basketball”. SMU used two big runs in the first half to take control of the game. North Texas took an early 6-2 lead, but SMU responded with a 13-6 run to take a 15-12 lead. The Mustangs closed out the first half with another big run of 14-2 to take a 37-22 lead into the break. North Texas got as close as 11 points in the second half but could never get the SMU lead down to single digits. Jackson record 16 points and 15 rebounds to notch her sixth straight double-double. Tricia Lee added 15 points and Brittney James had 13 points. (12/18/08) – Shanice Stephens and the North Texas women’s basketball team introduced the Sun Belt and Louisiana-Lafayette to “94-Feet of Heat” in a 57-56 win over the Ragin’ Cajuns on Thursday. Her mantra from day one, NT’s first year head coach used some potent offense to vault the Mean Green (5-5, 1-0 Sun Belt) out to a 37-24 halftime lead and hung on to beat the Cajuns (2-9, 0-1 Sun Belt) with a pair of key defensive stands. After UL’s Mercedes Johnson hit a runner with just over a minute remaining to give the Cajuns their first lead of the game, Amber Jackson responded just seconds later to put NT back on top 57-56. Tricia Lee pulled out the game’s biggest hustle play when she dove for a loose ball on a UL inbounds play to give the Mean Green the possession with 26 seconds remaining, and Jackson came up with another big steal to ice the game. The reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week, Jackson led the Mean Green with 20 points and 12 rebounds for her seventh straight double-double. No Mean Green player since NT Hall-of-Famer Clara Campbell in 1985-86 had more consecutive double-doubles. The Mean Green gave the Cajuns little room to operate in the opening minutes. NT held Louisiana off the scoreboard for the game’s first 6:32, and jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead. The Cajuns responded with a run of their own before Mansa El got loose. The freshman exploded for eight straight points on a pair of 3-pointers and cutting layup to put NT up 24-12 with just under eight minutes to play in the first. The Mean Green committed just five turnovers in the first half, but couldn’t find the handle in the second. The Privateers (5-5, 1-1 Sun Belt) snapped a two-game losing streak and won its third game against the Mean Green in the last 11 meetings. North Texas falls to 5-6 and 1-1 in the conference but still leads the series, 13-8. Jackson posted a career-high 28 points in the game, surpassing the 23 points she set against UA-Monticello last year. She was 12-for-17 from the field and 4-for- 7 from the free-throw line. The senior also posted her eighth straight double-double with 10 rebounds. UNO jumped out to a 16-8 lead and never looked back. North Texas cut the lead to three points three times in the second half, but the Privateers always had an answer. New Orleans extended its 37-32 lead at the half to 11 points, 56-45, with 10:46 left in the game. Jada Frazier led all scorers with 29 points. She was 11-for-14 from the field and 4-for-4 from behind the arc. Frazier led four New Orleans players in double-figure scoring. UNO shot 53.6 percent from the field and 76 percent from the freethrow line. The Mean Green hit 26-of-64 shots from the field (40.6 percent) and made 16-of-29 from the free-throw line. NT held the edge in rebounds, 40-33. Brittney James joined Jackson in double figures with 14 points. STILLWATER, Okla. (12/28/08)- No. 21 Oklahoma State used a big second half run to pull away from the North Texas women’s basketball team and win their sixth straight game 80-54 from Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Cowgirls (9-2) lead wire-to-wire but blew the game open early in the second half with an 18-2 run and never looked back. “We just had too many mistakes today and were in a little bit of a rush on offense and you just can’t do that against a great team like Oklahoma State,” said coach Shanice Stephens. The Cowgirls opened that game with an 8-2 run and were able to push their lead to 19-10 with 13 minutes left in the first half. The Mean Green (5-7) kept the game close in the first half but Oklahoma State used a big run of 15-6 to end the first half and take a 40-22 lead. North Texas cut the Cowgirl lead to 14 points at 42-28 early in the second half but mistakes doomed the Mean Green. Oklahoma State forced 29 turnovers and converted those into 34 points. The Cowgirls used the Mean Green’s mistakes to make the 18-2 run and take a 66-35 lead with 7 minutes left. The Mean Green held All-American Andrea Riley to a season-low 14 points and forced her into eight turnovers. (1/7/09) – UALR was able to hold off a late rally by the North Texas women’s basketball team and remain perfect in Sun Belt Conference play with a 70-61 win from the Jack Stephens Center. Down by as many as 17 points in the second half, the Mean Green (5-10, 1-3) cut the UALR (12-3, 4-0) lead to five points with 2:52 left at 61-56, but a key 3-pointer by Anshel Cooper was able to keep the Trojans ahead for good. “We played well tonight for about 30 minutes but we can’t have those types of defensive lapses and beat a team like UALR,” said coach Shanice Stephens. “Defensively we did what we needed to and got them out of their rhythm but we just have to find a way to be more consistent than that”. North Texas raced out to an early 7-0 lead five minutes into the game. That lead grew to 12 points at 21-9 with 7:36 remaining in the half before UALR made a crucial run to turn the game around. UALR went on a 17-0 run over the next 6:21 to surge ahead of North Texas 26-21 right before the break. The run continued into the second half as UALR turned a three-point halftime lead into a 15-point cushion with a 19-7 run. The Trojans pushed their lead to 17-points at 47-30 when the Mean Green began its comeback. Amber Jackson keyed a 15-4 North Texas run that cut the Trojans lead in half to 51-45 with 7:46 to play. The two teams traded baskets down the stretch until the 3-pointer by Cooper. Jackson had a game-high 26 points on the night, two shy of her career-high. The Mean Green lost its sixth straight game, falling to 5-11 and 1-4 in the Sun Belt. The Red Wolves improved to 8-8 and 2-3 in the conference and increased their lead in the series to 14-7. There were seven lead changes and 12 ties in the game. Neither team led by more than five points until late in the game. ASU held a 53-52 lead at 7:39 in the second half before taking off on a 16-6 run. Caroline Starr capped the Red Wolves run with a three-pointer to go ahead by double digits for the first time, 69-58, with 2:27 left in the game. The Mean Green scored only 10 points in the last seven minutes of the game. Yari Escalera set a career high with 19 points in the game. She went 7-for-14 from the field and 3-for-7 from three-point range. Amber Jackson led North Texas with 20 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field. The Mean Green shot 40.7 percent from the field in the game, compared to ASU’s 43.1. After going into half tied at 30-30, ASU outscored the Mean Green, 43-33 in the second period. Ebonie Jefferson came off the bench for the Red Wolves to lead the team with 21 points. ASU’s bench outscored the Mean Green’s, 29 to 7. North Texas (6-11, 2-4) went on a 9-0 run after the game was tied 63-63, including four points from Brittney James and a clutch threepointer from Yari Escalera. The Mean Green tied a season-high with 25 offensive rebounds and made 15-of-16 from the free throw line in the second half to help North Texas get a much-needed victory. Escalera continued her hot play of late by scoring a game-high 18 points, 14 of which came in the second half. She also nailed 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. After scoring only 25 points in the first half, North Texas began the second half on a 19-6 run to take the lead for the first time since the 17:37 mark in the opening stages of the contest. Escalera and El came out of the locker room blazing to start second half. Each player scored five consecutive points in the midst of a 10-0 run, capped off by an Escalera three-point play to give the Mean Green a 44-40 lead. North Texas struggled shooting in the first half, connecting on only 27 percent from the field (9-of-33). Denver was led in the first 20 minutes by Andie Mason, who hurt the Mean Green by shooting 3-of-4 from beyond the arc for a game-high nine first half points. After the Pioneers opened up a 25-13 at the 5:42 mark, the Mean Green closed strong by going on a 12-9 run. Jo Hall also made her return to the court after missing the past eight games due to a team suspension.
