The Huddle Winter Edition JAN 03 FEB 07 2014 The Huddle Winter Edition JAN 03 FEB 07 2014 The Huddle Winter Edition JAN 03 FEB 07 2014 A story that received from Joe Sileo, SC VP of Training and Development A Lesson on Just Going Out There and Making the Number I was talking with one SSC and after the conversation, I was so inspired by what I heard, I wanted to share it with everyone. After the usual “hello” and “how are you?” I asked Rick the typical questions: How is business? How did January go? Did you make the month? I did not get typical answers. Rick has been an SSC (DSC) for about 30 years and is based in the Detroit area, which you may know has been economically depressed and financially struggling. The Detroit weather in January was, as Rick put it, “terrible.” Frigid temperatures of -20, sometimes -30, with wind chill, snow and ice – a difficult environment for an SSC with clients cancelling appointments and salons staying closed. The University of Michigan even cancelled classes. So when I asked Rick how his January went, I didn’t get a weather report or an economic summary. What I got was a look of pride and personal accomplishment. Rick explained to me that his number for January was a $22,000 increase over last year. He admitted to me that he was a little shocked by the increase and after thinking about it, he made a decision. He had a choice: To complain about it or go out there and make the number. Rick told me it wasn’t easy and that going into the third week, he was still behind his number by $30,000. He didn’t stop. He kept pushing himself, converting two Aveda salons to Pureology, making a color conversion happen. In his words, “I did what I had to do.” The smile on Rick’s face said it all, as he shared with me his feeling of accomplishment. He went on to tell me that his approach is to dominate his market and is well-known by the competition. I asked him to explain what he meant by that. Rick smiled and said that when a competitor walks into a salon and finds out that Rick services the salon, they leave. When I asked why, he told me that if a competitor comes into his salons and places color, he makes it his mission to find out who that rep is and then goes and takes five of his/her salons away from them! By the slightly evil smile on his face, I had no doubt that Rick was speaking from experience. Rick told me he made his number, the most he’d ever written in one month. Imagine, after 30 years, to still be able to surprise yourself and exceed your own expectations. It was a lesson for us all, that in spite of all the obstacles we face – systems, inventory, weather, etc. – we can still find a way to achieve amazing results through our own determination, expertise and skills. We can exceed our expectations, it can be done. I want to personally thank Rick Michalski for his dedication and his inspiration.
