The Church has always spoken
emphatically about the mission of
the laity. At the World Youth Day,
calling upon young people to be
witnesses to their faith, the Holy
Father said, “Friendship with Jesus
will also lead you to bear witness
to the faith wherever you are, even
when it meets with rejection or
indifference. We cannot encounter
Christ and not want to make him
known to others. So do not keep
Christ to yourselves! Share with
others the joy of your faith. The world
needs the witness of your faith, it
surely needs God” (Homily of Pope
Benedict XVI, at World Youth Day 2011
Concluding Mass).
Jesus Youth too has always
encouraged missionary initiatives.
Looking back, we see that many
initiatives born out of a tiny desire,
a casual conversation or a random
thought, have blossomed into
something life-changing through the
power of the Holy Spirit. Over the
years, these varied JY mission
projects continue to produce
young missionaries.
A year-long formation
The Jesus Youth Fulltime
Volunteers’ project evolved from
a simple desire to share the Good
News. At a time characterized
by intense focus upon building
careers, young people setting
aside time for something as
intangible as mission seemed
suicidal to many, including
their families and friends.
Despite the struggles, doubts
and uncertainties, 27 young
graduates came forward in 1992
to be trained as missionaries
“I was a
part of
‘Chalo
Jharkhand’.
This was my first
mission experience and
it taught me to say ‘Yes’
to the Lord in all the
situations of my life. It
has also given me the
courage to speak about
Jesus to others.”
Arun David,
COIMBATORE
“During my
fulltime
volunteership, I came
to the realisation that
Jesus is the ONLY reason
for my living and then
each moment became a
cherished one. It was
the best adventure of
my life and I am glad to
have been a part of it.”

for life. They became the first batch of
Jesus Youth Fulltime Volunteers.
Today, after 20 years, the project has
grown - with formation in different
languages for two batches each year.
After their 40-day formation, volunteers
are placed in various mission centres
across India. The spark that began in this
corner of the world has now become an
international project, with volunteers
being placed around the world after an
international-level training.
This year 20 young people came for
the training in English and 17 for the
training in Hindi. Also, 8 participants
from India took part in the International
Training at Thailand. Currently, these
youngsters are serving in mission areas
around the world.

To be His healing hands
Mission Nurses’ Project, an
initiative of the National
Nurses’ Ministry, was born
in the hearts of a few who
pondered on how they could
spend more time for the Lord
along with their work. In 2007,
two nurses from Mangalore
became the first JY mission
nurses to work in Ambikapur,
Chhattisgarh. Inspired
and challenged by their
experiences, others expressed
their desire to follow suit.
So far, there have been
four batches of mission
nurses, who have taken a
committment to work in
mission areas for one year.
The biggest challenge these
youth face is in juggling their
work as nurses and their work
as missionaries. Yet despite
tiresome shifts and extensive
travelling, they become His
healing hands. They stand out
as a counter culture of love
in a career where monetary
benefits reign supreme. Their
eagerness to work in varied
situations like rural villages
with rudimentary amenities, is
a testament to their concern for
God’s people everywhere. This
year, 12 volunteers took the
commitment and are placed in
different regions.
Sharing our culture
Another mission project,
which gets bigger and bigger
with every passing year is the
annual Cultural Exchange
Programme. Initiated in 1997
with just 10 youth from Bihar,
this programme took a more
concrete form in 2001. The
Cultural Exchange is hosted in
Kerala. Youth from different
places across India come here to
get a renewal experience. Their
stay with JY families gives them
an opportunity to witness the
lifestyle of missionary families
and understand the importance
of daily family prayer. The onemonth long programme aims at
spiritual growth through personal
experience and transformation,
along with input sessions and
teachings. Over the years, more
than 2000 youngsters have been
part of this programme, counting
the 250 participants this year.
‘CHALO’ - Let’s go
The vibrant JY Teens Ministry has
initiated numerous faith formation
programmes sparked off by the
teens themselves. In around 2006,
there was a growing need among
the teens to have an exposure
to mission. Many sought an
opportunity to step outside their
regular comfort zones and share
Christ with others of their age. This
gave shape to the first mission trip
which was christened the ‘Chalo’
project meaning ‘Let’s go’!
These two-week mission trips,
organised usually between April
and May, have been an annual
event since then. Following
a retreat and training for six
days, the teens leave for a
mission place, where they stay
with local Catholic families.
The activities during their
stay include conducting short
programmes in schools and
parishes, house visits, interacting
with local teens/youth, etc. For
each participant, the mission
experience is also a ground for
intense faith formation. The
‘Chalo’ journey this year was to
Gujarat with 19 participants.
As Pope Benedict XVI wrote,
“We cannot keep to ourselves
the words of eternal life given
to us in our encounter with
Jesus Christ: they are meant for
everyone, for every man and
woman. ... It is our responsibility
to pass on what, by God’s grace,
we ourselves have received”
(Verbum Domini, 2010).
CHALO GUJARAT
The Teens Ministry’s mission journey,
‘Chalo Gujarat’ had 19 participants
from different states of India and
about 10 team leaders. The training
programme started on 8 May with
a 3-day retreat, after which the
participants received a missionoriented training. This was followed
by a mission visit to South Gujarat.
The journey concluded on 19 May.
VILLAGE MISSION,
SHILLONG
The Jesus Youth of Shillong made
a mission trip to three interior
villages, namely Lumdiengshai,
Mynriang and Nonghali from 21-26
March after three days of spiritual
preparation. In the villages they
lived with the families, taught
Catechism to children, visited
houses, taught prayers, shared
the Word of God and taught the
importance of Sacramental life.
MISSION NURSES’
PROJECT
Twelve participants from various
places of India participated in
the 4th Mission Nurses’ Training
held from 14 to 30 October at
CST, Thrikkakara, Kerala. The
objective of the 18-day training
programme was to empower and
equip the participants to become
powerful missionaries. The training
concluded with a Commissioning
Ceremony on 30 October.
CULTURAL EXCHANGE
146 youth from 15 states attended
this year’s Cultural Exchange
Programme held from 10 Dec. to
1 Jan. 2012 in Kerala. First, the
participants attended a week-long
retreat at the Divine Retreat
Centre. With a strong Godexperience received through the
retreat, the participants were
then sent to families in various
zones for a 10-day exposure. The
formation programme at Arthunkal
Basilica, Cherthala from 28 Dec.
till 1 Jan. was the culmination of
this 25-day programme.

Volunteers’ Training was held at
Alpha Pastoral Centre, Edakochi
and the Hindi training at Nagpur.

Training and 17 participants
including 2 Seminarians and

CBCI APPROVAL
renewed
The formal approval of Jesus Youth India by the Catholic Bishops’
Conference of India (CBCI) was renewed for a second term of three
years during the CBCI Standing Committee meeting held from 28
– 30 September 2011. In an intimation letter addressed to Antony
A.J., National Co-ordinator, JY India, Most Rev. Albert D’Souza
(Archbishop of Agra & Secretary General, CBCI) on behalf of the
CBCI also expressed that he was “certain that the positive attitude
and appreciation of the Catholic Church of India will encourage
the Movement to be at the service of the Church and also help it
grow in its missionary dimensions”. May this trust that the Bishops
have reposed on the movement spur it towards greater missionary
zeal and commitment.

individuals’, too echo in my heart
and urge me to reach out to more
individuals.” Sophia En-gedi, Kolkata

intention of bringing about radical
changes in my life. However, the Lord

have been able to uphold thus far.”
