My Y Story
02
2013 marked a tremendous milestone for the YMCA presence in the
Fox Cities. On February 23, we celebrated 125 years of service to our
local communities. Though much has changed over the past 125 years,
one constant has been the Y’s ability to find effective ways to carry
out the YMCA mission. The long-term success of our organization is
fostered by a powerful combination of autonomy, creativity and a solid
commitment to improving our community by being flexible enough to
change, to try new things and to be pioneers. Our history shows how
our organization has changed to meet the most pressing needs of our
community. We do not know how our Y will change to meet the needs
of our community for the next 125 years, but we do know that it will,
as community leaders have come to expect our caring activities to
include everyone.
We are extremely proud of several recognitions that we received over
the past year, including: Best of the Valley designation in the areas of
Childcare, Dance, Zumba and Health & Wellness; and our Gold Level
Certification as a part of the Well City – Fox Cities initiative.
In addition, membership reached new levels as we are now serving
more than 42,000 members with a retention rate of over 70%. We
continue to be inspired by the donor support that we receive through
our Annual Campaign efforts. A special thank you to our 200
campaign team members whose leadership and commitment allowed
us to raise over $1,000,000 for the first time in our history. More
importantly, the stories from individuals and families who have felt
the impact from this campaign effort have never been stronger or more
compelling.
The YMCA of the Fox Cities was selected as one of fifty YMCAs to pilot a
new national initiative focusing on Child Safety. We are honored to be a
part of this movement to enhance policies, practices and infrastructure to
ensure the safety and well-being of children utilizing our Y services and
throughout our community.
We will remain steadfast on our focus to strengthen the foundations of
our community through our three priority areas: Youth Development nurturing the potential of every child and teen; Healthy Living - improving
our community’s health and well-being; Social Responsibility - giving back
and providing support to our neighbors.
A special thank you to the thousands of dedicated staff and volunteers
who give selflessly of themselves to support our mission.
As we move beyond our 125 years of service in the Fox Cities, we remain
mindful and keenly aware of the generations of men and women who came
before us, and we carry their legacy forward with faith and love.
May He give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.

A LOOK BACK AT
OUR HISTORY
1888
In 1887, Frank Harwood and other
prominent community leaders were
concerned with the number of saloons
in Appleton and decided to convince
area businessmen that a YMCA would
benefit the community. Community
leaders voted on February 23, 1888
to establish the YMCA of Appleton.
1915
After several previous facilities, the
YMCA found its home in August 1915 with
a state-of-the-art facility which included
the first pool and youth center in the city.
Regulations stated that men must wear
long grey trousers, white shirts and
tennis shoes while in the gym. Only a cold
shower could be taken after swimming
in the pool. During WWI, memberships
ranged from $2 for boys ages 10-11 and
$15 or more for men.
1964
Founded in 1964, YMCA Camp
Nan A Bo Sho offers programs to
develop self-esteem, appreciation
of a healthy spirit, mind and body
acceptance of all people and
respect for our environment.
1965
In 1965, a new facility was
built at our present Appleton
YMCA location on Lawrence
Street with additions and
renovations in 1968, 1978,
1992, 1995, 2003 & 2006.
1967
In 1967, the Neenah-Menasha
Y Community Center on Water
Street in Neenah was built.
On January 1, 1977 the
Neenah-Menasha Y affiliated
with the YMCA. Now the Fox
Cities had two YMCA’s.
A 40,000 square foot addition
was added in December 2000.
04
2002
On August 1, 2002 the Y
Community Center of Neenah
and Menasha, Wisconsin, Inc.
merged with and into the Young
Men’s Christian Association of
the Fox Cities, Inc. as a single
nonstock corporation.
2002
The new Heart of the Valley
YMCA opened their doors for
the first time on September 23,
2002 on Kennedy Avenue in
Kimberly. In 2008 the facility
expanded with the addition
of a second gymnasium.
2002
On October 28, 2002 the
long awaited Fox West YMCA
opened its doors to the public
at its School Road location in
Greenville. An expansion in
2008 included a pool which
officially opened on
January 1, 2009.
2009
The Apple Creek YMCA
Program Center and Bruce
B. Purdy Nature Preserve
opened on Apple Creek Road
in June 2009.
05
All kids deserve the opportunity
to discover who they are and what
they can achieve. WE believe in their
potential AND see every interaction
with young people as an opportunity
for learning and development.
SWIM TEAM’S STORY
The Fox Cities YMCA Swim Team takes
great pride in their accomplishments in
and out of the pool. Team members have
taken part in community service
projects including volunteering at the
Special Olympics Swim Meet, manning
water stations at many local road races
and ringing bells for the Salvation Army
Red Kettle Campaign. A few years ago,
team members brainstormed to come up
with a new annual service project that
would combine team bonding and helping
the community.
The team came up with the project of
making fleece blankets for those needing
the services of the Harbor House
Domestic Abuse program and
UW-Wisconsin Children’s Hospital. In the
project’s first year, each swimmer gave a
donation to cover the cost of fleece for
10 blankets to give each location. The
second year, families gave donations and
the team started a recycling project to
earn more funds. Now, participation in
the project has increased to a level
allowing the swimmers to raise the funds
needed to cover the entire project plus
make blankets and hats for the hospital’s
NICU patients.

“THE ATHLETES ENJOY SPENDING TIME
WORKING TOGETHER TO DO POSITIVE
THINGS FOR OTHER MEMBERS OF OUR
COMMUNITY. THESE PROJECTS HELP
BRING OUR ATHLETES BALANCE AND
REMIND THEM OF ALL THE BLESSINGS
THEY HAVE IN THEIR LIVES. WE ARE
HELPING TO DEVELOP OUR YOUTH IN
AND OUT OF THE POOL SO THEY ARE
TERRIFIC ATHLETES AND EVEN BETTER
CITIZENS.”
ANGELA MONTY - SWIM TEAM HEAD COACH

01
“I want to educate others
about living life with
different abilities. I want
to make people think
about the world and
people around them.
I want to inspire THEM.”
08
Health and well-being are all about Balance.
That’s why we help people and families build
and maintain healthy habits for spirit, mind
and body. By helping kids, adults, families and
seniors from all backgrounds improve their
health and well-being, we WILL build a stronger
Fox Cities.
SAM’S STORY
Samantha Schroth is a 23 year-old
sheep-fanatic and lover of life who
recently graduated from the University
of Minnesota with a degree in animal
science. She was enrolled to begin
veterinary school, and her life was
what you could consider “normal” until
May 25, 2013.
“I was just standing in the front yard of
a friend’s cabin. A dead tree fell on me,
striking me across the chest, knocking me
to the ground. In that moment, all
I had ever known and planned for myself
changed. I sustained a spinal cord injury
and can no longer feel or move anything
below my mid-chest level,” explained Sam.
She is now confined to a wheelchair,
but has not let that slow her down.
After months of medical care and rehab,
Sam came to the Y and talked with staff
about wanting to pick up where rehab
had left off.
Sam is now a Y member and comes to the
Y several times a week to work on her
strength in the Wellness Center. “When
Sam is in our building, she lights up the
place! Her energy is contagious,” said
Brenda Johnson, Executive Director, Fox
West YMCA.
With our doors open to all, we
work every day to connect people
from all backgrounds across the
Fox Cities and support to those who
need us most. We take on the most
urgent needs in our community and
inspire a spirit of service in return.

LAURA AND DAN’S STORY
Although this family has been through some
difficult times, they still feel they have much to
be thankful for.
“The duplex our family rented caught fire on a
night our two daughters were staying with
their grandparents. We went to sleep around
10:30 PM and were awakened by a loud noise
at 2:00 AM. Our kitchen ceiling was covered in
smoke and a fire had started. I woke Dan, we
woke our neighbors and called the fire
department,” explained Laura. “We were able
to live with family while we found another
place to live.”
Two weeks before the fire, Dan was injured at
his work, creating a hardship for the family.
Laura contacted the Y to see if financial
assistance was available. “When we went back to
the Y to set up our membership, we mentioned
the duplex fire and that we were now
living with family. The Y was so generous and
gave us an extended family membership,” said
Dan. “But that wasn’t all they did for us.” A few
hours later, staff contacted Laura and Dan to
explained that the Heart of the Valley YMCA had
a Giving Tree Program for families needing help
during the holiday season and they would like to
help their family. “All our daughters’ toys were
destroyed in the fire, so we graciously accepted
more of the Y’s help and our daughters had a
wonderful Christmas,” said Laura.
Dan and Laura are thankful that something woke
Laura out of a deep sleep, that their daughters
were not home that night and that no one was
hurt in the fire. They are also thankful to the Y
for help during a difficult time in their lives.
10
“The Y helped us to stay
together and reconnect as
a family. We are so thankful
for so many good things that
happened to us and can’t wait
to ‘Pay it forward’ as soon as
we are able.”
11
The YMCA of the Fox Cities
greatly appreciates the
financial support from
our community partner

HONORING OUR LEADERS
Frank J. Harwood
Frank Shattuck
Looking back at the history of the Appleton
YMCA, you would have a difficult time
finding any other Appleton citizen more
involved with its small and meager
beginnings, trials and successes, than
Frank J. Harwood.
From the time of his childhood, Frank’s life
was devoted to giving something back to
the community that had treated him and his
family so well.
In 1888, a YMCA was organized in
Appleton in one small room over Pardee’s
Grocery Store on College Avenue, where
offices of the Traction Company were later
located. How much earlier than this date
Mr. Harwood began to think about the idea
of a Y we do not know, but from that
unknown moment until that room was
opened in 1888, Mr. Harwood never ceased
in his efforts for the Y’s success.
Prior to 1888, he was on the YMCA State
Board and served as Vice President. He was
the first president of the Appleton YMCA
from 1888-1933, yielding that office for a
time to Dr. J. T. Reeve, while serving as a
member on the State Board.
If not for Shattuck, many Fox Cities
organizations, foundations, trusts,
programs, buildings, facilities and funds
never would have reached their goals.
Thanks to Shattuck’s lifetime of giving and
long-range vision, his estate and a trust
continues to give back to our community.
Frank served as President of the
Neenah-Menasha YMCA Board of Directors
from 1980-1981.
Many feel that while alive, Frank Shattuck
got his gratification from seeing the Fox
Cities grow into an area that would reflect
his giving nature. Those who can give, give
what they can as often as they can. Frank
Shattuck passed away knowing the Fox
Cities is a better place to live for having him
in it and knowing that those he left behind
will continue in his tradition.

Lucile R. Orbison Leadership Award
Paul Trigg
Paul’s dedication to high standards,
professionalism and leadership has
positively impacted our Y organization.
Paul’s involvement included Appleton
YMCA Membership and Endowment
Committee Chairman, Appleton YMCA
Vice President and President of the
Board of Directors.
He has been a Strong Kids Campaign
solicitor and loyal donor. Paul has
continued to volunteer and currently
serves on the YMCA Corporate Board
of the Directors, Financial Development
Committee and Corporate Endowment
Committee Chairman.
Tom Prosser Leadership Award
Nile Emmrich
As chairman of the Building and Property
Committee, Nile helped lead a major facility
expansion/renovation project for the Y,
which added 40,000 square feet of
programmable space. He was also
instrumental in the development of a long
term parking master plan for the Y, which
included the purchase of residential
property and the addition of over 100
spaces.
Nile served on the Neenah-Menasha Board
of Directors, chaired the Building and
Property Committee and was a member of
the Executive Committee. He served in a
leadership capacity on multiple Annual and
Capital Campaigns throughout the years.
